For photos, file and links there is a qualifier to prevent spamming. If a photo/file/link you add is removed from the site within 2 weeks of you adding it, you will lose credit for that item. If it's removed at some point after that (maybe an updated map a year later, etc.) then you will retain the credit for that original upload.
That's it. I hope you guys like it! :)

Thanks Tim, freakin sweet!
Might I suggest adding the actual name and number of the achievement underneath, or being able to click on it and it links to the qualifications of the that achievement for each level?

If you mouse over a badge it will tell you what it's for and what level in the tool tip. I added a question to the FAQ too so it should be pretty easy to find out what's what.

can you just take my word for it and max me out? I'll take a picture of a room full of discs and put an '01 CE Roc on the top. It would be tough to list the 1000's of discs that I own.
where do you list aces? Do you really want me to try to list the 133 aces that I have?

Okay then, how about a progress bar to go with the medals, or to make it look better - a progress bar when you scroll over the medal - kind of like scrolling over a rating to see the actual number.

I just added in mine. I knew all the holes and what discs, but sketchy on times and scores of the rest of the round for some (lost the disc) so I just added into the description:
entering the ace only, I don't remember the rest of the round. Will enter in par for everything else.

The thing with that is you'd be messing up your own stats and the course's stats just to record the one hole. I would definitely discourage doing that but I can't stop anyone in the long run.

I think this new feature is great. It gives me a goal to work on as well as helping out the site. Great job guys!
I'll probably add more achievements as time goes on. One I was thinking of just now is Course Watcher for the number of times you have updated the conditions at your local courses. That is an underused feature but would be useful if it was updated more often.

Isnt the miles a bit skewed? I have over 100 rounds in and am only at 81 miles. Thinking it should be 50, 100, 150, 200 or something along those lines.
As it is you would need a min. 500 rounds on an average course which would put you gold on stat-addict. 1000 holes = 55 rounds which would be close to 50 miles walked.
BTW, very cool.

I'll look into adjusting the mileage.. I didn't really base those number on anything solid :)
Edit: New mileage levels are 250, 500, 1000, 2000

Very cool new feature.
Would there be away to show the achievements next to your name on posts in the forum (similar to TR & premium member icon). I was thinking mayby a single medal with a numeric character that represents the number of achievements you have. To show all of them would probably be too much clutter.

Great job on the addition of the achievements!:clap: This is going to add a whole new level of fun to this already incredible site.
I for one use the Scorebook feature religiously and have been since joining this site!
Messing up the course stats is a bummer though. I'm sure there will be a lot of people who don't really care about the overall course stats and only care about getting the achievement so they'll enter a bunch of bogus numbers. :wall: So what are your thoughts on providing an "Opt Out" in the user profile? The idea is that someone could fill in a bunch of garbage data to get their achievement without screwing everything up for everyone else who have legitimately put in good and honest data. In essence it would appease everybody. I don't know if this would be possible or if it is, how big of a pain it would be to implement. Of course, we would still have to hope that people would remember to check the "opt out" box. Without a doubt the data would still be skewed to some small degree but I'm sure it would be better than the alternative.
If they enter it as a special round, it won't count in the stats. I think special rounds still count in some stats but I plan on making them not count for anything in a future scorebook update. They'll just be records of a round that you didn't want to count for whatever reason.
JRW, that may be something I'll consider at some point. This is version 1 so there is always some room for improvement.

You know - you could have the basic achievement features as posted for everyone, but for premium memberships - let it do a total stat breakdown similar to the premium feature used in the score book. More incentive to go premium.

It shouldn't mess with the stats by being one way or the other (higher or lower than average), the only one where -2 would be off from a score I know I have gotten on that course would be Red Rock DGC, but I entered it as a special round since it was a 18 hole temp course when the real course is just a 9 holer. My last ace at Bryant was already entered correctly since I had the score card. I can't say the same for everyone else but for me -2 is fine on those select few.

Really, things like aces, miles, walked, rounds, etc... are easy to track already, but would still be cool to be posted in a progress bar. However - I would be very useful for the stats you don't have normal access to like photos, links, or files added.
Also, if you look at Tiger Woods golf - you have the empty spaces for all of the trophies achieved, and you can scroll over anything whether you have it or not so you can see what it takes to get it. Might be better and more motivating than just having the bronze pop up when you achieve it.

You do realize I add all these features and moderate the main part of the site by myself, right? :)
I might be able to add a silhouette picture for missing achievements. As far as all the progress bar stuff and stats, that will have to come at a later date if it happens.

Some thoughts about the photo achievement. 100 photo minimum seems awful high. It might be better to have the bronze set at 25, silver at 100, gold at 250, and diamond at 500. That seems more obtainable than the current 100, 500, 1000, 5000, especially since I have to reformat the all my photos (even from my phone) so that they are under 600MB.
Just thinking about resizing 5000 photos makes my head hurt.

Serious question, though: is there a way we can see how close we are to certain thresholds? For example, I know I've uploaded some photos, but I'm curious how close I am to bronze status on that one. Also I'm curious what counts as "files uploaded." Does that include photos posted in the forums, or only for files, such as scorecards, uploaded for the courses?

Here is the answer I got from Tim if you look earlier in the thread.

I think these are all things in the works, and eventually you'll be able to toggle between stats and progress to give you a little better information on what you need to do to make an achievement, but as Tim says - it's basically him doing everything - so these things take time.
I have a question: Who has the most achievements so far? I looked at EricJ - he's got to be near the top since he has been such an active user for so long. It's also funny to see that DanHyzer is the only gold on experience. Need to get my butt moving!

Cool, just noticed my achievements! Another thing to like about DGCR!
Files and links under the "Links/Files" tab on courses are the only thing that count. If you spam photos, files or links they will be removed and you will lose credit. I realize not everyone will be able to get all the achievements since eventually courses will have all the info they need. New course are being added all the time so there will always be opportunity.
If a course already has a full complement of photos, a course map, scorecard, etc. and there's nothing to add, you shouldn't add superfluous content just to up your numbers. I am vigilant about keeping the course listings streamlined and free of clutter to make the browsing and information gathering process smooth for people looking for new places to play. That said, there are a lot of courses that don't have photos, maps, etc. so there is opportunity to add to the site and work towards the achievements.
Also, like I said in the original post, if a file/photo/link you add is removed within 2 weeks of you adding it, you will lose credit. So spamming the photos, files, etc. accomplishes nothing but creating more work for me.

Is there anyway we can see our stats?5,000 will be nearly impossible. If your picture is like someone elses Tim may remove it. It has to be 5,000 unique pics. Tee shots are not going to do it.
that is 10 pics for 500 courses. I have played 75, I would have had to have taken 65 pics per course.

Oh believe me, I know. lol I think Tim sees my name pop up in "photo's posted" and double checks me. lol I've been fortunate to have been able to Photograph 6 unphotographed courses, and add photos to 5 courses with only 1 or 2 photos on them. I've tossed in a few missing holes on a few other courses as well. So far I'm at a bronze with photos. I'm not going to try for the gold. ...yet. I would like to try for that silver though.

I check all updates on the main site.. photos, files, course info, etc. Often times I'll optimize files that haven't been, fix bad photos, remove duplicates or superfluous stuff.

5,000 will be nearly impossible. If your picture is like someone elses Tim may remove it. It has to be 5,000 unique pics. Tee shots are not going to do it.
that is 10 pics for 500 courses. I have played 75, I would have had to have taken 65 pics per course.
It is surely a hard task, but I'm up for the challenge, just means people will have to start documenting those courses no one else wants to , like Lancaster PA I just was able to add photos to 7 courses that didn't have any, thats alot for one area. Check out the and add to this thread for Picture updates

On the mouse-over text of the medals do you think you could add the numeric value in it?
E.g. "Disc Collector - Diamond Level (500)"

Coming soon: DGCR Disc Store. ;)
oh please yes ...
Added the numbering, etc. to the tool tips, also just added a thing so your badges will show up on facebook foursquare style when you achieve them assuming your DGCR account is linked to your facebook account and all that jazz. I am planning on adding a few more achievements as well and possibly adjusting the levels of some based on feedback I've received.

Now someone is gonna complain (even though the criteria were only established a few days ago)they got an achievement taken away because of a threshold change, just wait and see. I say we stone that first person who does it as an example for all those who are just too timid to be the first.

If they enter it as a special round, it won't count in the stats. I think special rounds still count in some stats but I plan on making them not count for anything in a future scorebook update. They'll just be records of a round that you didn't want to count for whatever reason.
Special rounds should still count towards your overall holes played, rounds played, and mileage covered, just not towards your course stats. I don't see any reason why doubles rounds, tournament rounds, and "other" rounds shouldn't count.

Achievements are another good addition to an already excellent site, great job
Discoverer (# of courses added): 5, 25, 100, 250
I understand the achievements aren't meant to be easy and will require a lot of time, but the Discoverer medal seems a bit steep to me. When this site was still fairly new, adding new courses probably wasn't much of a challenge. But consider that right now there are only 120 people on the site who have played 100+ courses and only 12 who have played 250+ courses. So to have added 100+ or 250+ courses seems pretty extreme to me. I feel like it would be a major feet just to add 5 courses right now. Have you had any thoughts of adjusting this?

The scorebook is blowing up. lol I'm less than 100 away from the Stat Addict and 14 away from the course explorer. I'm with Tim, It wouldn't be a challenge if it were easy to obtain these awards. Since I've played all the adjoining states to S.C., I now have to plan longer road trips. My goal is 50 played in 10 states by the end of the year. I'm at 36 played in 08 states. So, I'm going to have to earn it, if I want to meet my goal.

Sometimes I only keep the final score, not hole by hole. Other times, on my first time playing a course, I may not keep score at all, that way a crappy score will not affect my opinion while writing the review.
plus I am already writing so many notes, I don't want o worry about score.

How do you keep track of holes played and miles walked?
But the miles walked is only calculated if the course you'vre recorded your score for has distances for the holes listed (or you take it upon yourself to update and load them appropriately). Miles in DGCR terms is just miles from tee to pin - not all the walking in between holes, all the zig zag walks down the fairway when you've shanked your drive and subsequent shots, sidebar treks off some unmarked path, etc. For example, Winter Park calculates out to about 8000', but I've played the course numerous times with my GPS route tracker on, and it averages out to be about 15000' total distance from my truck and back. Plus up and downhill on 6 occasions, 75-140' overall rise each time.

I hear you SuperB. I think that tee to pin is the best that we'll be able to do for exactly the reasons you've outlined above. At the Little Lehigh Parkway (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=19) you have to walk at least 1,000-1,500' from holes 4-5, 8-9, and 13-14, but there would be no way to account for that in DGCR. As much as I'd love to know the true distance I've covered, I don't think that I (or most other members) would want to go through the hassle of calculating, tracking, and entering that information after each round.
If I want to know how far I walked during a given round, I usually just ballpark it by doubling the total distance listed for the course.
AdamH
07-30-2010, 09:34 AM

This is a great idea. I am all for rewarding those who add information to this wonderfull database. I think that adding a new course to the site or being the first to offer a (hopefully helpful) review is a big deal. While pictures and maps are awesome, and in some cases totally necessary, everything about this site branches off from the course db and the reviews. They are the most important part and those that expand them should be rewarded.

i know the sport IS expanding and all, but can you imagine the time and money it'd cost to even FIND 250 new courses??? i don't think it could even be done in the 'states period, and certainly not by one person.

I still don't understand why the Trusted Reviewer Achievement isn't on the Achievements Bar. It's the best achievement you could make in DGCR. I know it's next to my name... but so are the crowns people have, and they're on the Achievement Bar. It just seems like it should be there.

It is the most important - hence why it's next to our names. :)
I think the premium "achievement" is a little lame, but makes dollars sense if it gets a few more people to sign up.
The issue with a TR achievement is that it's not just a flag that I can see if it's on or off. Every time you see the icon, the TR formula has been applied to figure out which one to show. I could make a special function just to show a TR medal but it doesn't seem necessary. I also wanted to leave anything TR/review related out of the achievements since that area already has its own thing going on.

It's not built into DGCR so I kinda cheated.
1) Go to DGCR Profile page (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/profile.php).
2) Right-click-save each medal image.
3) Make new panorama image composite file. (I used IrfanView (http://irfanview.com/).)
4) Resize panorama image to 33pix high.
5) Upload small panorama image to Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/).
6) Edit Signature (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/profile.php?do=editsignature) in Forum User CP (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/usercp.php) to include [IMG] tag'ed link to Photobucket image.
Note that this only works if you're a DGCR Premium Member (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/payments.php) as only they have the IMG tags enabled in their signatures.
Updated Signature so that the image is a clickable link that points to the FAQ describing the different levels.
E.g. photobucket url (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/faq.php?mode=show&id=32)

Hey timg, I was wondering about two potential positive achievements.
1 - "Garbage man", insert a field on the scorecard feature asking about the number of bags OR yes/no to garbage picked up during each round
2 - "Work partier" - I'm not sure at all about the logistics of making this happen but you may be able to add something to the "Road Trips" feature that will log which course and date you helped at a work party
If people are blowing up the site uploading scores, etc. - it would be a real positive if we could encourage the same with keeping our collective courses clean!

Anything that happens off site doesn't really work. If I can't figure it out using the existing info in the database then there's no way to get a legitimate count. I also don't really want to add additional stuff just for the sake of getting an achievement either. If I'm going to add a new feature, field, etc. I'd prefer that it be something that is useful for more than just getting another badge.

Necroed to comment on the acheivements. Currently these are at-
Stat Addict (Holes played): 1000, 5000, 20000, 50000
Workout (Miles walked): 250, 500, 1000, 2000
I've recorded 106 rounds with 1829 holes played easily making me a stat addict but it also puts my miles walked at 99.98. To me that seems like there is a little disparity there.

Yeah, I questioned that myself. Until I realized that course I play the most, is a little 9 holer that was 1536ft. I'll say the avg 9 holer is 2300ft, and 18 holers Start at around 5500ft. So I would have to play my course 4x to reach 1 mile, Tupelo Bay 2x to be at a mile, and our Loris course Once. I've played thirty rounds at East Bay, which equals 8.8 miles. I've logged 10 rounds at Tupelo Which equal 4 miles. So, it's really all about the distance of your course. I've played West Lake in Davenport, Iowa once, and I walked 2 miles. So it's all relative to the size of the course.

I get what you are saying but I am not sure that is that relevant. Even so most of my rounds are at Blue level 18 hole courses. I do hit a few 9 holers just to get rounds in on them to review them. If the stat addict is at 1000 holes that is about 55 miles. So to hit bronze you have to do roughly 5 times in workout that you do in stat addict. I know it is just for fun and I'm not worked up about it either way. It just struck me as odd.

I noticed this a while back and started to say something but achievements aren't supposed to be easy. Lets say the average hole is 316ft which is 0.06 miles. That means you would have to play 4166 holes to reach 250 miles, 8333 for 500 miles, 16666 for 1000 miles and 33332 for 1000 miles. So the workout achievement starts out harder, but it's more difficult to get the diamond stat addict.

Hmm... a few I'm never going to get, as I don't track my games.
The only ones I think I'll get are Disc Collector, State Explorer, Correspondent and Premium. Ace would be nice... but meh.

I know I'll probably never get stat addict or miles walked just because I never record my rounds which is my fault I guess, but I think some achievements are more "pestigious" than others. Being a trusted reviewer....which I hope to be very soon, aces, contributions to this site.

2219 Holes
118 miles.
Which I guess means at around 5000 holes I get my bronze status with 250 miles walked.
So...
20000 holes = 1000 miles & 50000 holes = 2500 miles walked.
Seems to work out okay by my math.

So basically the stats you like get to be "pestigious" whatever that means. Personally, I wish more people would log their rounds. That is a sadly under-used part of DGCR. When I am looking for locals to contact about playing together, the first thing I do is look at their DGCR scorecard and make sure I am not wasting a pro's time or trying to play with a newbie.

My average hole length in my scorebook is 330 feet. I guess that is higher than average? I would think that hole distances average out to somewhere around 300 feet...which still takes just over 1,136 miles of golf to get you to 20,000 holes played.
To get to 1000 miles and 20,000 holes played you would need to play holes that average out to 264 feet. Maybe that is closer to the average hole distance across the country...I don't know. Seems like a low number to me.

In the Chicago area, I would guess that the average hole length is much closer to 200' than 300'. You have a lot of longer courses in texas compared to other parts of the country, I wouldn't be surprised if the overall average was right around 250'.
