Shade tolerant grass

I'm interested in seeding in some grass and wonder what the best options are for any that are shade-tolerant like creeping red fescue ?

In North Carolina I'd say one of the shade tolerent turf type tall fescues. Small amount of maintenance and good heat and winter resistance. The only draw back is it is not self healing, which means you must over seed any damage.

Fescues are the most tolerant of the medium priced seed. Look into mixing Poa Supina into the mix. It is $30 a pound for me wholesale but is well worth it. Eventually after it gets established it will continue to creep into the areas where the other turf struggles.

When I do slitseeding to repair thin shady areas I mix 1lb. poa supina into my 25lb. shade mix and have had ok success. Mixing anymore of the supina would just make it too expensive for large areas. If you are doing small areas it is worth getting more supina. If it is a large area just get some of it to mix in and eventually it will spread throughout. Be patient though!
