View Full Version : Altering of a local course

Playing at Goyne Park in Va yesterday, we noticed a lot of alterations. hanging branches cleared and then at hole 14 an entire tree bent over to clear a drive path. We've been playing here for at least 2 years and that small tree was the main obstacle on this fairway. Some idiot bent it down and destroyed the tree just to make the shot easy for him/her. Can't bend it back and the tree is now going to die, just so someone can get an easier shot. This kills me. Anyone else find this type of nonsense on their course? Its hard because its meant to be hard, to add the challenge and make you a better player. What a goon.

Seen similar stuff done to ruin course but also after some flooding and fallen trees the local club helped improve the course. They Have even planted additional trees to help offset the ones try cut down, I think.

yep, I see it all the time...so sad. Its usually teens that do it where I live. Its one of the reasons I actually support bringing pay-to-play to my area. Maybe it will keep the idiots away.

The course closest to my house has a ton of nostalgia for me, even though its just a small pitch and put course. No one puts signs up there anymore since the punks break them all within weeks, and the baskets are in desperate need of repair, but wont be fixed due to how bad the park is treated.

I have an idea who would be doing some trimming out there for an upcoming tournament. The bent over tree is unfortunate. I'll look into it.

Some of the other stuff may be trimming and cleaning, but the tree on 14 was done on purpose to make the shot easier. No doubt about it.

Trees are overrated. I think they make disc golf TOO hard. ;)

As for your local course "maintenance," that sucks.

This stuff is all too common these days. Has forced our local designer to create pin ball type holes because he knows players (notice I refrained from saying noobs) will break many of the little trees; usually by using the bend over until it breaks method you mentioned. It's a sad state of affairs....

Not really, but I saw a guy cut himself out of a shot with a pair of loppers once

sometimes when i lose a disc in a high patch of nettles or ivy or some big leafy plant that makes you itch off the fairway, i get my army shovel out of the car (about a foot and a half long) and whack stuff down to get to it. i can't imagine anyone being terribly upset that i was cutting down itchy plants off in the rough

See the awesome tree in the middle of the fairway?

Some douche broke it down a few months after the course opened...f'n lame...that tree was unique as hell.

Have we met? Introduce yourself the next time we are on the course together. I'm the loud, cocky guy.

I'm not sure who is actually in charge of the Ecoff/Goyne Park. The contact person for Chesterfield Parks is Stuart Connick. I worked with his daughter's bf many years ago to do the course design. It was changed and put on hold a few times before Alan Kane got it installed. He now lives in SC.

We met at the White Bank tourny where you won the Cat! We've talked a few times.

There's a course in Little Rock Arkansas (Burns Park - Red) where someone cut down a tree that was the crux tree for the Hole. So... the strung a cable between two trees and hung a 5" wide PVC Pipe so that it dangled in the area where the old crux used to be. I thought it was pretty cool that they tried to "fix" the Hole.

Note the white pole in the middle of the fairway.

That is a great idea and awesome that they returned the course back to its old integrity.

Should've hung the violated corpse of the illicit arborist instead of the PVC.

That PVC pipe has also had its share of damage done to it too. In that pic, I think the bottom of it was about 3ft off the ground, but now it has been broken on the bottom to where it is closer to 6.5 ft off the ground and has a sharp edge to it that could really hurt someone. It doesn't make the shot any easier, but it just shows how people can be.

We had a tree in the middle of the fairway on a short hole at one of our local course. That evil hurricane Isabel tore it out so I replaced it with a 6" diameter steel pole 21ft tall. It made an awesome sound that could be heard all over the course. One of the old timers(I know who you are) removed it and threw it down into the creek. It's okay, we now use it as a mando pole and every once in a while you get to hear that nice gong sound it makes.

We had someone come through on hole 6 with 4 wheelers last week and they took out the 5 saplings we planted for added challenge/replacement of other trees on other parts of the course. So now he've been going around to all the openings they *might* be able to get in through and we've put logs wrapped with barb wire. Hopefully we come out there and find a 4 wheeler or two to tow away to the scrap yard and buy a new basket or two with :)

There's a hole on my local course where someone bent over and broke a young tree that is behind and to the side the tee . It doesn't even affect play on that hole. It's just mindless vandalism.

probably someone getting pissed after a bad shot. i've seen it happen a couple times at a local course (also someone throwing a bad one, getting angry, and kicking over a full trashcan )

The dryads need to step up and stomp the perps.

Seriously though, people need to respect courses as they are and not how they'd like them to be.

Some adamhenry has been removing HUGE amounts of trees and brush at my home course. He's already turned two holes into complete jokes, and it looks like he's going to be doing more "maintenance" on a few other holes.

Nobody knows who this guy is or if he even works for parks and rec or what. Pisses me off.

The last time I played Watertown WI, (4 weeks ago), on hole 4 of the back nine, a tree about 4" diameter was pushed over. This had to take some serious work by a few guys and definitely took some of the challenge out of the hole.

We had an awesome old bent tree that made a 90 degree angle right over your approach shot on #18 at Pueblo City Park. It forced you to go under or over which made the hole unique and fun. Some jackass broke it off so the city cut it down. It had to be at least 50 years old. We also had a tree on #11 that the trunk split down the middle then continued to grow, so it was one big tree with two trunks. You could see right through it. They broke that as well and it wasn't even in the fairway. I guess they can't stand character of the course or difficult shots.

*raises hand*

i've kicked over a trash can or two in my day (i REALLY need to stop over-drinking when playing), but at least i picked all of the **** back up when i realized that made me look like a really big dick. (and killed the vibes of others in the group.)

moral of the story? let me win and i'll play nice :D
