As far as a 3 day DG destination, would you opt for the quality of great, western PA courses (Pittsburgh) or the quantity of really good Eastern Pa courses (Lehigh Valley) ? Not adverse to playing the same course twice.

Regardless, PA and neighbouring courses are awesome!

If I were visiting Pittsburgh to play DG, I think I'd get a hotel (or camp) north of the city. Center your travels somewhere near Moraine or between Knob and Moraine. Then you'd be able to get to Knob, Deer Lakes, Moraine, and Pymatuning pretty quickly. 2MRX is past the airport on 376 (like right on the highway), so you could hit it on the way in or out.

I second this. If you were thinking hotel, I suggest staying in the Cranberry area; you would be convenient to I-79 with access to Moraine, Pymatuning (a ways north) and Knob Hill as well as I-76 which is a good enough way to get to Deer Lakes. There is great replay value on these courses! I can't speak for Pymatuning yet, but it looks very promising.

I would definitely include IUP College in with the west PA group and probably Schenley for the view of the city. So with Moraine(x2),Knob Hill & Deer Lakes(x2), how do these stack up with Lehigh Valley ?

I played Schenley this evening. The sun was just setting when we finished 18, and looking back on the skyline at all the buildings with their lights on was pretty amazing. The Pittsburgh skyline is beautiful as it is, but seeing it lit up from the Schenley Park view was astounding.

People seemed to like this breakdown of the Pittsburgh + 2-hour radius scene on another thread, so I thought I'd repost it here for reference with a couple changes:
CHAMPIONSHIP (Par 60+): (# Reviews--Rating)
1) Deer Lakes Park (25--4.68)
2) Moraine State Park (33--4.61)
3) Pymatuning State Park (4--3.50)
4) Seven Springs Mountain Resort (6--4.00)
5) Orange Crush, Fairmont, WV (8--3.94)
6) The Black Course, Moundsville, WV (5--3.90)
CHAMPIONSHIP 9-Holes (would be 4+ stars if 18 holes)
7) Two Mile Run Extension (5--3.50)
8) Slippery Rock University...Front 9 to be installed later this month. Will be initially wide open and awesome before a more technical Back 9 is installed in the future.
ALMOST CHAMPIONSHIP
9) IUP College Lodge (16--3.84)
10) Knob Hill Park (25--4.08)
11) Seth Burton Memorial, Fairmont, WV (10--3.80)
12) Thompson Park, East Liverpool, OH (7--3.36)
12.5) Under construction: expanded Old Economy Park Disc Golf Course?
SENTIMENTAL OLD COURSE
13) Schenley Park (23--2.85)
If you look, most of these courses have fewer than 10 reviews, which I think indicates that they are relatively new and still being worked on. I would guess all those courses will be significantly improved over the next year or two.

That's sound advice. Add Seven Springs and the West Virginia courses as you are able.
As I think about it more, if you're going to do an Eastern PA trip one year and a Western PA trip another, you might benefit from waiting to do Western PA for a year or two so that a couple of the newer courses I mentioned have some more time.

Both sides are worthy of a trip and the center ain't too shabby either. Don't forget that when u r west you can include Thompson park, Ohio and Orange Crush Seth Burton and the Black Course, WV. In the central u can add Poor House and Paw Paw and in the east you get the best in Delaware in Carousel and Iron Hill Using this logic really makes for an interesting argument.
I live in the east and have played it all in and around pa I love this debate
I think the best courses overall inside the state are Moraine Deer Lakes in the west Nockamixon Jordan Creek Tyler SP in the east. The best ski hill courses are seven springs in the west and blue mtn in the east. Open Air Pymatuning in the west and Tinicum and Little Lehigh in the East. It seems every region has an argument. I feel like one of a few who has been blessed to have played them all

CHAMPIONSHIP (Par 60+): (# Reviews--Rating)

2) Moraine State Park - Nockamixon great challenge
3) Pymatuning State Park -Little Lehigh open long holes
4) Seven Springs Mountain Resort-Blue Mtn Skyline and Valley stellar ski lift golf
5) Orange Crush, Fairmont, WV-Iron Hill insane wooded challenge
6) The Black Course, Moundsville, WV-Carasoul open air and some woods
CHAMPIONSHIP 9-Holes (would be 4+ stars if 18 holes)
7) Two Mile Run Extension-Unami unique holes
8) Slippery Rock University-
ALMOST CHAMPIONSHIP
9) IUP College Lodge-Jordan Creek memorable holes and a bunch of good ones
10) Knob Hill Park -French Creek long wooded fairways
11) Seth Burton Memorial-Tinicum
12) Thompson Park-Roland improving 27 holers
12.5) Under construction: expanded Old Economy Park-Riverside soon to be 18s
SENTIMENTAL OLD COURSE
13) Schenley Park-Sedgley Woods historic but still fun great vibes
Not included from the east of equal or greater caliber were FEW Dam, Hickory Run, South Mtn, Yetter, Prompton?, Long Trout Winery, Anson B Nixon, and so on
this was fun little exercise. I'm not bashing the west. Both sides have some great dgc to be explored

A great caveat to all of this is that in the central area of PA u can play 54 actual holes (2 separate 27 hole courses not just multiple tees and baskets) and then 36 at Pinchot (2 18s) and 36 at Paw Paw (2 18 courses) in 3 stops that's 126 holes of top notch DG.

MY POA would be coming up from the south and camping in a nice centrally-located place, which puts Seth Burton/OC right on the way (just off 79). I'll have to research what might be close to I-81/78 on the east side.

That's a great list. How about breaking them down in terms of most fun to play with a heavy bias towards woods courses ?

08-13-2010, 09:27 AM
For Eastern PA/Allentown area (as I've only played Knob Hill in the west which i'd rate 3.75/5) fun to play with heavy bias towards woods....
Tyler State Park - 27 holes with 3 regularly rotating baskets per hole, top notch baskets, tees, signs, benches, etc. plays mostly in the woods with some par 4 and 5's. these holes will challenge you and make sure you set up your drives, approaches. Top notch course
Jordan Creek - one of the 05 pro worlds courses. also plays mainly in the woods with several legitamate signature holes (heart attack, pond, 18). water comes into play on several holes.
Nockamixon - the most challenging course i've ever played. as challenging as it is beautiful, you'll never feel so good about getting destroyed on a disc golf course. not recommended for rec. players. bring a map as it doesn't have the best signage.
Blue Mountain Peak course - not a very woodsy course (back 9 plays in the woods, but not as much as a typical course), but if you enjoy Ski golf, i recommend checking it out. if you haven't tried it, it's worth a shot. there is also a base course on site that is more wooded (although i haven't play that one). blue MT open saturdays and sundays. You will need to devote a day if you play this course and i recommend getting there as soon as it opens.
Those 4 are great courses regardless if you like the woods.
next tier:
Tinicum - beautiful manicured course with rotating baskets, plays in and out of the woods, with some holes that will test your distance.
Little Lehigh parway - 5 minutes away from Jordan Creek - beautiful course that places a bigger emphasis on controlled distance. not a woodsy course, but you do need to place your drives well and hit some gaps. water comes into play on several holes.
Other:
Sedgley Woods, second perm. basket course in the country (after oak grove), installed in 1977. all par 3's with generally 3 tees per hole. set in the woods, with most holes avg'ing around 240 i'd guess. great little "pitch n putt" if you will, with the most active friendly DG club i've encountered. leauge play 3 times a week all year, with $2 doubles generally following. I'd hit this up if you have the time and are passing through/near Philly
Haven't Played, but are likely worth playing:
Iron Hill, Carousel - two Delaware beasts, check out the reviews
French Creek - a wooded monster

^^ This does a pretty good job of summing up these courses. For Blue Mountain, I'd really only recommend playing one course or the other on any given day. Both are fairly taxing, especially the peak course.

Gotta Love how Pittsburghers wanna talk Hockey in the middle of the Baseball Season....it's ok I forget Pittsburgh has a baseball team too
We have the best QB tandem in the Nation in Roethlesburger and Vick who wouldnt want a sex offender and a Dog Killer as Pillars in their communities?
But this is about Disc Golf so to go with the Sports Rivalry I offer this insight into the first ever Pittsburgh vs PhillyDisc Bowl
The Quarterbacks
Deer Lakes Park vs Tyler SP
Both great Amenities mostly wooded Tyler is bigger 27 over the more dynamic Deer Lakes but Tyler sometimes doesnt show up (only one set of baskets and single tees) while Deer Lakes is ready for every game(3 concrete tees) (edge Pitt)
Running Back
Moraine State Park vs Nockamixon...Both are Grinders that will punish you all day long (long difficult holes) but in the end Nocky just looks better while it runs you over (Nocky is sooo much prettier) (edge Philly)
Wide Receivers
Pymatuning State Park vs Little Lehigh...both are always open/often make the big wide open play and sometimes spectacular but are head cases and get lost running routes (navigation?)(even)
Seven Springs Mountain Resort vs Blue Mtn Skyline Ski Hill...the Divas much hype and both open but 7 has some water and Blue has some woods (even)
Special Teams
Two Mile Run Extension vs Unami..both not FT players and probably never will be 18 at 9 holes but both pack a punch if given the chance 2MRX is just a bit more spectacular and capable of more big plays (Edge Pitt)
KickersIUP College Lodge vs Jordan Creek both fun and sometimes easygoing but are capable of special kicks as well..Both nail the end of game every time (#18) but Jordan never misses the extra points (amenities) or the early game kicks (IUP starts out slow) (Edge Philly)
Tight Ends
The East has a long completely wooded extremely Tight Course in French Creek ....to my knowledge Pitt doesnt have one of these (edge Philly)
Defense
Knob Hill Park vs Tinicum...Westerners defend overrated Knob and Easterners defend overrated Tinicum (even)
Up and Comers
Old Economy/Slippery Rock vs Roland/Prompton...seems more potential with OEP and SR over the older Roland and the injured Prompton (closed for season) (Edge Pitt)
Hall of Famers
Schenley Park vs Sedgley Woods...historic and full of great memories and fondness by their admirers (even)
The Bench
The East just has so many more 9 and 27 and 18 holers that would be notable in other regions...Pittsburgh quickly tails off after the top 10 or so out there (edge Philly)
So in the end the East comes out ahead due to its remarkable Quantity of Quality....but just barely
oh and for the record Philly has a better basketball team too!

Its tough to do as western PA tends to have better balanced courses with open and wooded holes while the East tends to be open or woods and rarely is as balanced.
Worthy Primarily Wooded
Challenging and Fun
Moraine
Nockamixon
Quakers Challenge-Pinchot.....big bold and wooded
Challenging and Cruel
French Creek
Iron Hill
WhiteTail (9)....quit crying
Extreme Challenging Fun
Orange Crush-hard on legs, heart and score
Fun atmosphere
Long Trout Winery.....drink some great wines and have some great times
Par 54 Technical Fun
South Mtn
Yetter
Boulder Woods-Pinchot...traditional addictive woods golf
Dont dare skip Deer Lakes it has great wooded looks but has some really fun open holes as well

Hilarious!
You forgot one category: Head Coach...Western PA designer/promoter/course superintendent/laborer J Gary Dropcho is well-known for getting 110% out of his players and developing rookie talent. Who's leading the players onto the field out East?

There is only one head coach in Pennsylvania and his name is Joe Paterno.

I'm sorry harkeypuck...I should've mentioned that my last post was not up for discussion or debate. It's a tautology and need not be examined further.
However, compliments and praise will be accepted.

There is talk of building another championship quality course in the Pittsburgh area. This should help balance out the state's DG "teams". I really need to make a trip to the East side of the state.
Come on, Pitt is WAY better than the Sixers! :hfive:

J Gary is a good coach and better than any individual back east but the east has better pick up games (locals who volunteer grass roots) and doesn't need such organization.
Go Suxers btw!
All 3 regions are impressive if u divide the state by the susquhanna then the addition of Pinchot whispering falls and codorus pushes the favor to the west with only a bunch of mini dg courses added to the east

damnit - I don't want to be in the west. Lets divide it by I-81 and keep those courses in the east.

I can't argue with Jesus ok then the east gets Gettysburg Hershey and Harrisburg. Game over east side wins.

I'm hoping so hard that it'll be at Boyce.
On a side note, Crosby vs. Mike Richards: Who would win a round of disc golf?

If the West side of PA wants to gain an edge, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Erie needs some serious DG help. There is so much untapped potential in that corner that it makes me sick. State & public parks, colleges & universities, and all the vast acreages of private land could easily accommodate a world-class course. We need to get some of you Pixbergers to lend a hand to the Erie folks and get a solid course installed. Maybe the next time you go to Presque Isle?

I thnik I'm gona save my next Pitt trip for a year and hope all these additions and improvements really happen as well as the Black Course getting real tees etc all do happen....If you can post or add any other info on SRU OEP or Boyce that'd be awesome
I like to think Richards would win but that Crosby kid is special....
Hmmm Who wins these battles of East vs West
Clark Bar vs Hershey Bar......
Heinz Ketchup vs Philly Cream Cheese....
Devonshire Sandwich vs Philly Hoagie......
Chipped Ham vs Scrapple....
Iron City vs Yuengling.....
Klondike Ice Cream Bars vs Breyers Ice Cream....
"Almost Famous" vs Philly Cheesesteak.....
Pierogies vs Soft Pretzels....
Dont forget East has Tastycakes and Herrs Chips and I think the Big Mac was born in Pitt......not sure what this solves other than PA has a bunch of fat slobs and great Disc Golf

The biggest DG wastelnads are also the areas with the best land potential......Im looking at the Laurel Highlands and The hunting heaven but DG wasteland of the northern border....land is so cheap and perfect for DG I bet we could all have a bake sale and buy enough land to do whatever we pleased in those amazing regions that have basically nothing to add to the scene....Its painful to drive through those areas and imagine what could be.

I'm from NJ, so I would not be helping the Yinzers on this. Tastycakes and Birch Beer for life.

Erie is neglected by PA who try to give it to NY who doesnt want it and gives it to Ohio and then Ohio tosses it into Lake Erie and it washes back up to the Pennsylvania shoreline.....ahhhh State Rivalry..gotta love it! Always hear Philly is the Sh1thole and Erie is the armpit I am afraid to know what Pitt is!
Would love to see something sprung up in Erie though...would give me a reason to go there.

Erie used to be the third largest city/metro region in PA until about 10 years ago, but being in the rust belt and not really improving as a region gave the greater Allentown area an open door to take 3rd place.
Would love to see something sprung up in Erie though...would give me a reason to go there.
And it wouldn't suck so bad when I went back to visit my family.

You have to leave the first quote in the brackets and have a /quote in brackets at the end, editing anything in the middle.

Thanks for the help, but I think the last part was a little much
