It seems like I can't find any updated information on tournaments around the south bend/mishawaka/lower michigan area. Im hesitant on spending 50 bucks on a new PDGA membership mainly becuase I don't have any information on tournaments this year..michiana disc golf club normally has 2 or 3 sanctioned events...but they havn't updated there site for this year. So I don't know what to do!

I've looked at the PDGA website for their sanctioned events and there are very few in Indiana. It definitley made my decision easier as to whether or not I was going to get a membership.
I would contact someone from the Michiana DGC to see if they will be hosting any events, or you can check the PDGA site for their calendar of events.

Did you do more throwing or sledding at George Wilson this winter? Man, I can't wait to get back to that course. Heard it was in danger of being removed though.

haha I havn't gone out sledding yet..but there was alot of snow for awhile there wouldn't melt away! but finally it did yet they won't put the baskets up yet...I dunno why it would be removed, I mean its not extremely busy but im sure the sledding alone makes up for it in the winter...I hope it doesn't get closed down!

I'm in the south bend area too, and due to the lack of local events we have been looking at the Kzoo area, which seem to have a vibrant and active club. Have a look up there, plenty of courses, plenty of events.
As for locally, bertrand has 2 or 3 a year of their own (just check the parks website for info), and I think baugo might do one or two on their own as well.
The last michiana club event I went to was ok, but not great like they used to be. It was also mentioned that the 'old guys' are moving out and if anyone newer wants to move in and run events, they are welcome to. Personally I think the local club is dying off....I can remember people introducing new players to the club, being helpful and taking the time to talk and welcome new players into the sport. I haven't seen a lot of that if any the past few years. I was a member back int he late 90's but stopped playing for a few years, only to come back to what appears to be nothing.
I could be way off about the local club, but this is just my observation and comparison to what it was like in the late 90's when I joined.
As for events - kalamazoo/battle creek area....can't go wrong there.

awesome thanks! Ive been looking through them and kzoo and battle creek is like what? hour or so away from the south bend area? Yeah, I went discing one day at wilson and (I didn't know this at the time) but the two main guys from the MDGC were there right in front of me and they didn't say anything to me about the league then again...it would be kinda weird to just bring that up ya know? But yea, not much promotion these days...ill have to look at the bertrand website and see when there first tourney is, im just debating if its worth the 50 dollars to become PDGA, looks like there is a 10 dollar fee per sanctioned event but dunno if I can make it to at least 5 this year to make up for it..I should be able to :-/

If you're willing to travel, there will be plenty in the Toledo and Ann Arbor areas this year. Mostly b/c tier. Not sure about AA, but Toledo will have probably 4 to 6 tourneys between April and the beginning of November.

in ohio? that might be a long drive! haha...I might know someone that lives somewhere in ohio..ill have to check and see! Isn't that like central ohio? thats about a 4-5 hour drive from here I think :-/

noooooo, not central. Toledo is a little over an hour from the IN border on I-80

02-17-2009, 12:16 AM
Oh well, I live in central north...so it will take about another hour or so just to get over to ohio...I live like a 30 minutes from michigan/indiana state line..does ohio have a website for tournaments?

Not that I'm aware. As far as I know, the local tourneys are all scheduled, but nobody's posted them anywhere online yet. If you're interested, keep an eye on www.tadga.com. The Michigan-Ohio Border series will probably be posted there in the next couple of months or so.

ummm...I don't think I will be coherent on march 7th considering im celebrating my 21st on march 6th haha sucks having a bday on a wednesday (i have to delay the fun!) what time is the tourney at? if its at like 8 I would have to wake up at like 5 to make in there..only about a hour and ahalf away..hmmm lol....so is doubles basically just you and your partners score combined? never played doubles in disc golf but thats what im assuming...so if my partner sucks but we do AM 3 division and I do well, they won't bump us up will they?
zud00
02-18-2009, 11:05 PM
Most doubles are "best disc." It is like a ball golf scramble. Each player throws their disc and you choose whichever disc you want and then both throw from that location. If you don't have much tournament experience, it's fine to start at AM 3.

You're supposed to (and "have to" in sanctioned events) play in the division of the higher rated player on each doubles team.
I don't know any standard format events that would bump people between divisions during the event.

It's not sanctioned, go ahead and throw MA 3. Registration ends at 9:30, but I'm sure you'd be good till 9:45. Yeah, it's best shot. You each have a throw from the best of the previous throw. One score, one love.

my local course holds an event, if you shoot better then 2 under in the am 3 division, between rounds they will bump you up to am 2, its pretty stupid I think becuase you'll get sandbaggers anyways...its not sanctioned though

That would lead to some interesting first round MA3 player strategy to stay exactly at two under.
I can easily see an MA3 player intentionally missing putts on the last few holes so as not to finish the first round better than two under and get bumped from 1st in MA3 to middle of the pack in MA2.....

yep, thats what my friend tried to do in that tournament..we were in the same group and I was score keeper...he thought he was exaclty 2 under so he missed a few times on the last hole...nope he was 3 under..he got bumped lol..he was pissed..alot of ground to make up lol

March 7 looks to be a big day for tournaments around here. There's a tournament about a mile from my place (Brewer Park in GR) and one at Kimball Pines in Kalamazoo, about an hour from here. I've never played a tournament before, but I'm considering driving down to Kzoo just because that tournament is sanctioned and the one at Brewer isn't.
Here's a handy website that lists all (?) 2009 Michigan tournaments.

I just looked at that lumberjack open again and there is no way in hell im spending 48 dollars plus a 10 dollar unsanctioned fee plus gas and stuff to drive up there...58 dollars for a tourney is a little expensive for my taste...i need to fork out the money at become PDGA sanctioned before its to late!

I'd play Am 3 with you, except my wife would be waiting for me at the door with a butcher's knife.
A. It would make tourneys 4 weekends in a row
2. I'm unemployed
D. It's her birthday

It's not on the ball golf course. Front 9 with some slight elevation changes and mature trees. Back 9 open and long. Alt 6 set up for tourney dangerous with lots of ob.
