this is my first dye on a beat up pro-d buzzz. it is a modified terror squad sign. this also is my initials. i think i left it in too long. but when you peel off the vinyl do you wash the disc first or just peel and pray?

Rinse it off before you remove the vinyl. It also looks like you got some bleeding around the edges. What kind of vinyl did you use? How long was it in the dye bath? Did you make sure to squeeze out all the bubbles form under the vinyl before dyeing?

i used oracal 642 vinyl. i did put all the bubbles out and it was in for like 8-10 minutes. im thinking the vinyl got too hot and peeled of the disc a little bit.

How hot was the dye? when i am doing discs in a water bath of black rit, i will turn the pot onto high, and just as steam starts to form on the surface of the black abyss i will turn the stove off and put the disc in. Oracal 642? Are you talking about 641... if so here is the info.
This high-gloss calendered 5-year PVC film is a cost-effective alternative for shorter-term applications. Featuring a water-based, permanent adhesive, this film displays excellent cutting and weeding properties and the lowest shrinkage of any economy film. ORACAL 641 is a good choice for banners, directional signage, POP displays, window graphics and other indoor and outdoor general signage. It is not recommended for vehicle applications. Available in 60 vibrant colors.
The thing that stands out to me is the water based adhesive. I'm gonna take a wild guess here and say that was the cause of your problems... the hot dye attacked the cut edge of the vinyl, and started to dissolve the glue and VOILA runs. It's ok... looks like you used an older disc anywayz... and trial and error is the best way to learn.
Im hoping you do not have very much of that vinyl.... I use Oracal 651 series vinyl, and it works flawless every time. :D
If anyone needs dye patterns cut, or just vinyl i can do that. :D

i never shut the stove off. i put the disc in when steam started to show so i guess i got that part right. the vinyl was 641, and i have 10 yards:eek:

I did the same thing, never turing the stove off on my first dye. It turned an old stingray into an overstable ugly disc  I guess the first dye isnt supposed to come out great

no, no, no - expert status comes after the second one.
Oregon is right- practice is what anyone who wants to dye discs needs. By the way cool idea and design for your first disc. If the bleeding was more consistent you could have said "I meant to do that!"

if the bleeding was anymore consistent then i think the whole disc might have changed color.

LOL... just recently i was putting a rather SICK dye job on one of the first run grooves i bought, and yeah... my dumbass forgot to turn off the burner... well im in the back room which is my office and i start to smell something sticky sweet... I was like damn what is the woman cooking...
I pass her in the living room like woa you make some cookies? she was like ummm no... I turn the corner to walk in the kitchen and i immediately notice that the pan of black is boiling over, and splattering all over my kitchen... the smell... a melted black clump almost ready to burst into flames. LAWL good times.

I might just have top hit you up on this as I want to try & dye. I'm assembling the pieces now (pans, Rit etc).
Do you have a desktop or plotter style vinyl cutter? Or are you hand cutting the design? Thanks, DCB18

Soory for the dye job but the great news is that you have plenty more to work with. Good luck! I will be in the same boat soon. When dying do you guys usually use the same pots as you cook from? Meaning, your good pots or do you buy and old one just for dying?

all my designs are cut with a vinyl plotter. i draw the artwork in Adobe illustrator, then my machine does all the hard work... :D

Yeah i pirated some of the wifes pans... :D But you should check out like goodwill or st. vincent de paul. They usually have alot of older pans and they are usually like $1.
Also stay away from non-stick, teflon, etc... just find yourself some crappy old stainless steel pot. 8-12 qt capacity should work nice.
Although i am using a skillet right now as well as 3 other pots. :D The wife hates it when i destroy the kitchen doing a big batch of dyes. :P good times!

i actually went to wal mart and bought a 6 inch deep pan that is about 2 inches wider than the disc. i mean who wants to eat black mashed potatoes? i bet if you wash it it wouldnt do anything but just to be safe...

I wad up a paper towel, put it over the opening in a bottle of Clorox, and invert the bottle. :p
Really though, I just put some bleach on a paper towel and wipe the pot clean, then clean again with dish soap. My wife is pretty phobic about toxicity as relates to food, and she's ok with this.
