View Full Version : What was Your First Ace?

I almost nailed my first Ace the other day the first time playing at Spring Valley DGC in Spring, Texas. Hole #9 is about 200ft with a quick Blind dogleg right. I annyed my White Wolf off the tee, and it followed the corner beautifully. Just tried to get it around dogleg, but ended up landing directly in front of pin. A few feet further and it was there.

I guess I am curious where everyone nailed their first ace, and how they did it. Every disc golfer loves to talk about their successes, so tell us about them

Mine was at Baker Farm (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3) on hole #8. I threw my DX shark and it flew like a bullet.. flat, straight and right into the basket. Length on the hole is 197ft. and it's pretty much a straight shot to the basket. I had gotten close to acing that hole several times in the past but the stars must have been aligned that one day :)

Here's the hole:

Hole # 11 at Lafluer's Bluff in Jackson, MS. Around 200 feet. The is a natural path with the basket on the side of a hill up to the right. I threw a cheetah with a nice right turn on it(backhand) and as it died it faded just a bit left into the basket. A couple of years later I aced the same hole again with an almost identical shot, except with a Dragon the second time.

Playing four months now and I haven't had one yet. My best run was the 230' QVCC Valley Classic #18 at Texas States this past weekend. My hyzering 180 Star Shark missed by what had to be about a foot. Ended up down in the ditch and I punked out on the ~12' steep uphill birdie putt too :( Sad, sad hole for me.

Oh yeah, Ace Pot for the tourney was $950. Two guys split it. One hit QVCC Links #4, don't remember the other one.

I've only hit one, about 2 months ago on a 260 ft hole 7b at Wickham Park in Melbourne FL. Hit it while playing with 4 other course regulars, with a 171 gram champion Beast. It was about the best feeling in the world :-)

My first was on hole 7 at Iroquois Park in Louisville in 1983. I think it was about 180. A downhill shot and you had to hyzer round a clump of trees. Ching!

My only other ace was on hole 4 at Iroquois which was shorter back then as I recall. Just a straight shot down a tunnel of trees - maybe 160.

I haven't had a basket ace since but I went from 1984 to 2005 without playing. I have had some object course aces since then but I don't count them.

played today and almost had 2 Aces at Archusa Water Park. On #1 and #5 I hit the basket off the skip but neither went in. Both times the disc was still rising and hit the bottom of the basket.

It took me eight years of playing before I hit my first ace last August. I didn't even know it went in until after helping others search for their disc and catch up to my drive. I couldn't find my disc at first as I never thought to check the basket.:D

I hit my first last weekend at Peaks View Park in Lynchburg, VA. It was hole #3, which is pretty much a straight shot 180 feet hole. I used a DX Eagle. I've come close to aceing the hole before, but this time I finally got it.

It was the greatest feeling ever. I've been playing a little over two years!

My first ace was also with a dx eagle. It was hole 6 at Industrial Park in Searcy, AR, a wide open 240 footer. It happened in my third week of playing and I was all alone. I sat at the tee box for like 10 minutes not knowing whether to celebrate or start crying that I was the only person on the course. So the question is, if you hit an ace in a field and nobody is there to see it, did it really happen?

I say it counts. I mean, why lie about it. I have 5 aces and I was alone for 1 of them. I know it was an ace, whether anybody else does or not.

I have also only had one ace. It came at Sharp Springs in Smyrna, TN on the pro hole 3 (over the pond). I was using a 10x KC Pro Eagle 174g. It is a gentle hyzer out over a pond and back into a landing area on the other side. The pin was in the short location right on the bank. It is about 265 maybe. Well, I threw it too high, or so I thought. I really thought that I had lost a good disc in the drink and it fadded off slightly to the left, but was falling like a brick from the sky and it may have hit some chains, but it looked like it almost fell straight into the basket. I had one witness, my buddy that I always play with, so we both signed the disc and it's hanging in my office...in fact I can see it right now. I hated to retire it because it was a trusty driver but I learned from my buddy. He has one ace. 3 days later he lost the disc in the drink on a different hole. Mine has not been thrown again since.

Yes, it counts, but it's not near as fun. I'm glad I had two witnesses!

Hole 12, 490', Gran Canyon, Brooksville FL, FLASH 175g
2005 Best Shot Doubles Championship

I threw a huge hyzer off a 50' cliff that opens up to a grassy field and somehow my disc managed to find the basket and stick.

Ken Climo congratulated me after the round, which made not being in the Ace pot(290$) all worth it!

My first ace was about an hour ago. Hole #3 at Hobson Grove in Bowling Green, KY. 265 ft. blind basket. I made the throw on the line I wanted and had turned to walk off the teepad when I heard CRASH!!! So I ran over the hill and saw my disc in the basket. It likely skipped but I'm not sure. Had a witness and took a pic of him standing by the basket also, just in case.

Here's a pic of the Star TeeRex before removing it from the basket:

Four years playing (possibly to the day), playing by myself but some locals saw it. Probably in the 263 ft long position right at the end of the concrete. It was one of those that just felt perfect on the release... and didn't feel real until I pulled it out.

I hit my first ace after a couple months of playing and it just started a snowball of aces after that. My first ace was 220 ft. I threw a 171 champion orc forehard and it just slammed the chains and stayed in.
Here's the hole:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh112/AceCannon64/zzzz.jpg
I aced it 2 more times shortly after.
I also aced this hole with a skip ace soon after my first ace:

Both of those holes are at Greenway DGC in Oregon.
I also aced this hole while visiting family in Arizona:

since last fall, no more aces but lately I've splashed the chains and 5 different holes ranging from 220-405 ft.

Im not even gonna lie but I still to this day havnt had an ace, soooooo many chain hits from tee though, Ill never be happy with my game untill I get one! Ive had the "close to perfect" throws, I just need a little bit of the luck, and it is a little bit of luck for you people who judge skill on # of aces someone's had

Well, I have no idea how many aces I had back in the 80's. I know there were a few, but not that many (I'd guess like 5). I never really looked at it as something to keep track of. But since I started playing again in the last couple of months (yes, after an 18 year lay off, LOL) I had my first ace yesterday. It was at the new course in our area, Haslet Community Park, Haslet, TX, hole #9, during the first time I played it. Funny thing is, I actually nicked the chains the second time around and the shot looked identical.

There is something to the mental side of things in all sports. You did it, therefore it is possible to do it again, and you have the mental image to copy it by.

So I guess I will start counting these from now on.

That's 1. :D

My first basket ace was in 2001 on the University of Idaho campus, hole #2. I was attending Washington State University, and used to play this course every Sunday after a LONG weekend of drinking. It wasn't very long but quite technical. The hole was located in between two massive brick building right on campus. I was very happy considering I had gotten close several times.

I got my first ace the day before yesterday, 06/09/08 7:11pm at the Redwood Curtain here in Arcata, CA, on hole 4. For those not in the know hole 4 curves to the right, around a big burned out stump. I threw my 148 Archangel straight and hard with a tiny bit of Anhyzer it curved perfictly around and slamed into the tonepole with a mighty clang:eek:. I ran around the corner and some guys that were putting on 9 said they saw it slam. I was never so happy to have other people on the course. This was 3 years in the making, after so many close calls and near misses it was an amazing feeling to hear it hit that pole, probably the most beutifull sound I have ever heard or ever will (till the next one).

I got my first ace today!!! It was on an object course though, the course is in a big wooded hilly gravel pit near my house, It was about a 300 ft. throw from one hill top to the other, with a small canyon like drop off in between the 2 hills, the hole is a double linked fence with a "5" spray painted on a piece of wooded inbetween the fence (it sounds like chains when you hit it) I hit it right on the "5". I still wont count this as a legitimate ace I guess since it wasnt a basket but its the closest ive gotten and ill take it!

Last week was my one-year anniversary of playing... and still no ace. I had my closest call yet this past Sunday on #10 from the blue tees (359') at The LINKS at Quail Valley (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2576). A beautiful anny out over the lake with my Champ Monarch looked like it hit chains perfectly... but alas the disc fell outside the tray, not inside. I did manage to sink the 8-inch birdie putt.

No ace yet for me either. I have been close a few times. All at Iroquois Park here in Louisville Ky. I have hit metal twice. Once on hole seven (inch or two lower) and once on hole twelve (inch or two higher). Once on hole two I was a foot above the basket but it still looked golden. I almost skipped one in on the practice hole once.

I've only been playing 4 months. About two months into it, my son and I were on #16 at McClain in San Antonio. The hole is 160' dogleg left with a huge oak tree at the apex of the dogleg.

I throw forehand so I flicked an annie with a Buzz FLX, thought "Jeez, this one's got a chance!" and heard the magic sound, CLINK, as it hit the chains and fell into the basket.

My son let out a war hoop and started jumping around, high fiveing me.

I looked at him and said as calmly as I could, "This sh*t is tooooooooooo easy, I gotta go find something to challenge myself with."

Haven't been close since.

Its funny how time stands still on those throws that just come off. I've 3 aces this season...all without a witness. But the one that really is memorable for me is the first time I hit the chains from the tee.
I was throwing a RHBH S shape down hill with a left to right cross wind. The wind on this hole almost always wants to lift the disc and carry it away. Its 270 to the basket and there are some big trees near the target.
I threw a Roadrunner sorta nose down, low and brisk to the left and when it left my hand I knew it was good. The wind kept it from crashing, but the disc pretty much stayed 6' off the ground. The Runner flipped and glided out right of the chains, slowed and faded back. CHING! It was in the chains. It was my first tee shot in the chains and I was delirious. The Runner kinda bounced off the chains/post and then balanced on the rim of the basket. And hung. And fell out. I'm like looking around..did u see that...did u see that. lol.
Drop in deuces are great.

I witnessed my first ace the other day. My course is fairly easy and open so its always a possibility, and it seems like everytime I play theres a couple close calls, but still no chains or aces for me. We brought a guy along whod only played once before and was trying to throw backhand. He was only getting 100 feet or so, and I decided to try and teach him forehand like I throw. His second throw he was putting it 300 or so feet, and I knew that it was the style for him. Our second playthrough of the day he uses my beast for the second time ever on the first hole, and the disc pulls a huge S curve and parks right in the basket. Its going to haunt me until I finally ace myself. Our group of four was watching and two other groups of two happened to be on other tees also with a view of the basket. Needless to say I gave him the disc, as I had no rightful claim to ownership after such a beautiful shot.

Cedar Hills #7, Raleigh, NC. I was out with a couple of buddies. The hole is about 250ft long and it’s over a pond. I've had trouble with this hole in the past. Something about the water plays tricks with my mind. Nonetheless, my flick was really starting to come along and as of late I had started flicking a Pro Destroyer (use to flick Candy Orc). I stepped up to the tee feeling confident for a change and without much hesitation I just let it rip. I was kind of quick about getting up to the tee pad and throwing before my mind could start to mess with me. Anyway, my Destroyer flew flat and straight and right into the basket. It was one of the best feelings in the world. Finally the Sharpies I carry in my bag could be put to use. My witnesses (my friends) signed my disc to commemorate the occasion. This just happened two months ago after playing DG for nearly 4 years. The best part is I aced this same hole for a second time just one month later (last month). This time I was using a Candy Orc. Break out the Sharpies!

I have a similar experience. I brought a friend along who had played two or three times ever. He did not bring any discs and I let him play with a brand new champion gator. On one of the holes he teed off and sunk a 290' for an ace (luckiest one I ever saw,it went through about 20 trees), I just shook my head and smiled. He gave me back my disc at the end but I felt I did not own it anymore.

I already posted my ace, but my buddy who is not on here nailed the most impessive ace I have ever seen. It was during a weekly tourney and he won the ace pot to boot. The hole is a 300+ shot tha has 280 of bramble to go around one way or another. If the wind is coming out of the north you can throw a overstable big in to the wind and hyzer (rhbh) it it the hole. But no wind on the day he did... so not having a forehand he threw the nicest RHBH Anhyzer and it just locked in and nailed the basket. We at his tee could only hear, but the group ahead of us let us know it stayed in. Just thought I would share that since my shot was so simple. This fellow and I started at the same time and raced to the ace. I won but not with style. Any other killer aces seen?

I got my first ace this spring at Ottawa Park in Toledo OH, hole #6 with a wraith. The hole is probably about 250' with trees lining the fairway. I've hit chains/basket at least 10 this year with no such luck. It was kind of funny when I got it because I wasn't expecting it, usually you know when you have a chance. My friend looked at me like did that just go in? I was like ummm.. I think so. He got one when we first started playing I finally get one and he gets another like 2 weeks later. my first was at centinnial park in ky. basket 3, 245ft and a straight shot. it was a high throw to the left of the basket that paused in the air before turning into the chains. since then (mid may 08) I've made five aces, four on that course. which isn't saying much because there are very few obstacles there. however my favorite ace happened on 8 at the same dgc. #2 lightning hookshot thumber throw. disc turned upside down like it's supposed to, hit the ground about 30 feet in front of the basket. I was still on the pad and could see it still moving towards the basket in a straight line. what i couldn't see, and the guys i was with could, is the disc was not on the ground but instead raising up towards the basket, next thing i know it is sitting in the basket. sad story is i didn't have the money for the ace pool that day and it was around $100

My first ace came on No17 at Otter Creek Park in Brandenburg, Ky. It is a 290FT hole with the basket tucked off to the left in a stand of mature trees. I threw a yellow Star TeeRex down the middle of an open fairway then it faded hard left skipping off of a small uphill slope and into the chains. I heard it hit, but did not get to see it go in.

This was my first, and to date, only Ace.

My first(and only) ace came 11/08/08 @ Sharp Springs in smyrna tn.
hole #9 the hole dubbed "I ain't scared" for reason the murky pond you must throw over.(it was really named for "I ain't scared" to retrive my disc out of the muck)
the strange part was that I normally throw a disc I dont much care for, if it hits the drink, it can swallow it.
That day we were playing doubles so I decided to throw my Tbird because of wind....it did the whole drift up and down, the line looked good, and to our amazement hit dead on.....an unforgetable moment for sure.
there are pics on my public profile, in the sharp springs album......got a pic of the disc all signed by the witnesses..................what a day!!
to top it all off me and my doubles partner needed those 2 strokes for the win.

All the guys were too excited to be chapped(unless they hid it well) For all of us, it was the first one seen go from release to basket. my one friend got a blind ace before. So it was good for all.

DGtourist,
All i can say is when it happens, it will be when you least expect it.
and savor the moment, It happens fast and then its done, on to the next hole.

I still have not had an ace but, on the 26th I hit the chains  and it went through.:( The basket was behind a tree and I threw my disc. Talk about a cool sound! I guess I'll have to keep trying!:)

Took me about 1 year but it was well worth it. It was on hole #17 at Seven Oaks Park in Nashville, Tennessee. It's about a 260ft slight uphill, narrow and snakey. I never saw it go in but that ring of the chains says it all!! I ran up the hill and there it sat!! It was a Champion Viking.

Still no aces, but I have had quite a few runs here recently. Last week I went out to the university of south alabama with a friend, on the first hole I threw a huge hyzer that went a bit to far and hit the chains on the backside of the basket and fell to the ground. I went home and told my brother about it, who was fairly skeptical and said he would have had to have seen it. The next day my brother, father and I go to the same course, and on the first throw of the day I did it again, this time I hit the front of the basket, needless to say my brother believed me. Later in the course I wrung the chains again on hole 18, but it still didn't sink...I seem to have trouble getting them to stick.

hit my one and only at my home course (Manchester Park, St L, MO) almost a year ago. #3 200 ft long, 50 ft downhill, dogleg right. Threw my trusty yellow aviar (171). I knew it was close, but there is big drop off three sides, plus i was playing alone and had my heads phones jacked up. i didn't know it was in till three kids walking up told me. Played the hole over christmas break, not even close.

I made one ace on the 18 hole course that I set up around my house during a "practice round." I have six basket placements with 18 tee placements. It was my hole #2 that I nailed the ace last Summer. It's 180' down hill with the basket tucked in behind a large shrub. It requires an easy, straight throw and the lay of the land forces the fade at the end of the disc's flight towards the pin. I couldn't believe it when it stayed in the basket after hitting the chains. It's a home-made basket that I bought on line and it doesn't catch that great. It allows for a lot of blow throughs so It was awesome when it stuck.

I hope to post some pics of my course soon.

Can't recall the exact date, but if I remember correctly mine was in the Summer of 2006 (about 2 years after I began playing). It was on Hole 7 at Coyote DGC @ Lorch Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1475&mode=ci)...a very short (150'ish) but tight tunnel shot with the basket on the left side of the fairway, over a small hill, guarded by 2 cedars. I remember the day pretty vividly...I was there with a few friends who only played casually once a month or so (at this point I was already addicted) and we had just stopped for a brief smoke break :D

I walked up to the tee, eyes barely open ;), and threw my new 175g 11x "Soft" KC Pro Roc straight at the pin, hoping I would hit one of the guardian trees and drop straight down for an easy 2. I guess my Roc had something much better planned, because it threaded a small gap between the trees and hit dead center in the chains. I didn't know how to react, so I just thrusted both fists as high in the air as I could get them and turned around to my friends to make sure they all saw it. Everyone signed my disc (my favorite sig was something to the effect of "awesome super badass disc golf god!") and we went on our way...and my giant grin didn't fade for a very long time.

First ace was at Research Park in College Station, TX. I was visiting my best friend who was at college there... this was back in probably 1999. We started playing in June 97. We didn't know much about disc golf -- just got out and threw plastic -- but I put a red DX Gazelle on a blind flick around some bushes and crashed the chains... I think it was hole #14 or #15, but that course has been redesigned/rearranged so many times that I have no idea what the number was for sure -- it's not a hole that is there anymore.

At the time, I didn't know anything about disc golf traditions, and didn't know most players signed or kept discs... a couple of months later, a different friend was playing and throwing that disc and put it irretrievably into a bog up in Garland, TX... so there went my first ace disc. I don't even think it had my name on it. But Red DX Gazelles still make me nostalgic.

Not my first, but my first Ace in over a year. It was about 260 feet to the right. I threw my 170 sidewinder RHBH. It turned over, sailed around a tree and crash! the sweet sound of chains. I'm still smiling :) Maybe it was karma since I chose "sidewindin" as my forum name?

January 1st, 2009. I just started playing last week after receiving a disc set for Christmas and started off the new year with my first Ace. Lucky as hell I know, but I'll take it. It was only 110' at a simple course...but it was sweet.

My first ace was at Lake Lewisville Park in Lewisville, TX on hole number 1...about 230ft. It is a slight downhill hole where the tree is behind a couple of trees. I lazered it right at the chains and it went straight in through a gap between the trees. It was AWESOME! There are few things in life that feel much better than that. My dad and my brother were both there to witness it. Unfortunately I did not retire the disc in time and it is now lost. I'm up to 3 total aces now, I've had two VERY close ones here in the last couple of weeks that were in the chains and then out again...hopefully I'll add another soon.
The first ace came after about 3 and a half years of playing, so those of you that haven't gotten yours yet, don't worry, it's coming!

You know I didn't get too bent about it because it actually looked and sounded pretty badass and it was exactly what I was aiming for by about 4 inches so I still thought it was pretty cool. My first ace was at Cal Young Park #3 in good ol' Abilene, TX. A short little one, somewhere around 150' with a big tree halfway between the tee and the basket. Threw it side arm hyzer, it went around the tree and it didn't fly out the other side like I thought it would. Obviously the chains gave it away why, but I thought it was funny that I never got to see my first ace...

Downhill and open, aimed it low and to the right, then watched it fade to the left, at just the correct height, then ... ching! - right into the basket.

Do I retire the disc now, or throw it on every ~237 foot hole I play in the future? :-)

Which is exactly why I ALWAYS buy in for the ace pool, plus if noone hits it, there's a CTP at the end of the tourney for it.

My only (almost) ace came at Ottawa Park in Toledo, OH, hole #4 short tee. Threw my DX Valkrie and it hit the post. 2 feet higher...:(

what happens to me more than getting an ace is having a horrible drive on a long hole, then sinking the next shot from a distance that you'd see on a normal par 3 hole... this makes me mad and happy because you get the same feeling as an ace, but it was your second shot and not your first!

Nope, an ace is an ace. Even thoses 100 foot holes are far from easy aces. I have two legimate aces in my very long career. I've played quite a few of those short pitch and putt courses along the way and haven't aced one of those yet. I'd love to throw one in. No, it wouldn't be as impressive as a 300 footer but I'd still take it.

Well, who exactly would you be cheating? I mean, you didn't place the teepad and basket where they were located did you?

My first (and only) ace came unexpectedly last July. I was on a road trip to see my parents and wanted to get a round in at another course along my route with longer holes. I was running short on time, so I opted to play two rounds in another town on a shorter 9 hole pitch and putt with dual tees and pins. I played the first round "odds short, evens long", and the second just the opposite. I narrowly missed an ace in the first round. On my "15th" hole, which was #6 from the short tee, I was looking at a slight uphill grade, threw an X Buzz LHBH dead down the middle and into the chains. Basket was in the short position. Tee sign said 144', but it looked more like 175' or so. No witnesses.

As long as its a designated hole (even a tourney temp), and its on your first try, an ace is an ace, although some aces are more impressive than others.

I've frankly seen people hit deuces that were more impressive than my ace.
