Something in course designs that has never set right with me are transition paths (from basket to next tee) that make you walk down hill. Throwing down hills is so much more fun than throwing up (((:gross:))) that it so often seems that the designer is missing the boat when they make you lose altitude before you throw.

Granted, unless you are involved in the designs or chat with the designers, you cannot know the constraints put on them, but still.....

A hole I played yesterday drove me nuts and drove me to finally post this mild pet peeve of mine: Hole 3 is on top of the hill to the right. You walk down the hill, then throw up the hill for hole 4 (shown) and then walk right back down the hill to tee pad 4 which is ~100' almost due left of the tee pad show. Nuts!

throwing uphill makes it "harder" for most people. i think its lame too, i'd much rather play that hole backwards and shoot for the teepad

but there should be a safe distance from the last basket

I finally got back up to Sugaree today, and Mando is the master of not walking downhill to a tee. This course is on the top (mostly) of a mountain, and only has 2 holes that play uphill. There aren't any huge downhill bombs, but most of the holes play downhill, and there are never any crazy climbs or hikes up to the next tee. I'm not sure how he bent gravity that way, but it's amazing.

I had that thought playing this course (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2414), lots of uphill holes, fewer downhill holes, and several downhill walks, it just didn't seem like as fun a design as it could be given the elevation available.

way to go mando; way to go...(said like a high school cheer)

Granite Ridge (Highbridge) has 11 downhill holes, 4 uphill and 3 where tee and pin are on the same level. Several of the walks between holes are uphill to pull this off.

thats nothing... We play the mississippi river valley, up hills- down hills, walk mule trails from hole to hole! I have seen players meltdown with frustration from all the hills and trees. your cardio level will become a factor.

Played the unfinished course at Slippery Rock on Saturday...there is a monster uphill hole, but some downhills as well.

On of the holes at my home course is about 499 up hill in a tight path

I always wish it was backwards sometimes. But at least you don't have to go downhill to get to the next hole.

Ah yes, Oschwald in St. Nazianz...my photo there, too!

Decent niner, but could definitely use an overhaul, especially for the reason you just mentioned.

I've been thinking and can think of very few holes like that---walk down a hill to tee off uphill. Oddly enough, 2 of them are at my own course, and they're consecutive! The reasoning? Downhill shot to a basket on the edge of a drop-off (think death-putts). Walk downhill and next drive angles up the hill, to a basket on the edge of another steep slope (think rollaways)....then again, shorter and tighter, with the basket perched high above O.B.

But we pay it back with a couple of those walk up a steep path to dive-bomb your next drive at a basket far below holes.

That's Fallasburg, right? I love that course!!!

I love that hole too, I think it's 6? (), totally insane! Way better uphill than down, imho.

That hole looks exactly like one of the holes at the waverly hills temporary course at the CCR Open in Lansing Michigan this year.

The left of the pin on this hole is my favorite spot for table graffiti.

One of our courses here, in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains, plays 6,500'. When you find you self on hole 13, you're at the lowest point of the course. The parking lot is close to a 1,000' higher elevation. Five holes to get you back to your car...all uphill...but not as bad as you might think...

hills vs mountains, apples and oranges!
were not even 1000' above sea level. the local down hill ski courses dont have thoughs kind of elevation changes. I bet disc fly nice in the thin mtn air!

i love to hate kaposia hole 19 and 20

Dave may or may not have mentioned, but here is some more insult to walking downhill. This is uphil hole #4. Basket #3 is up top on the right. Tee #5 is BACK DOWN HILL on the left! So, you're up on the ridge twice and a downhill opportunity is squandered both times. Two opportunities for nice wooded downhill touch shots, or even a downhill crusher into the fields below.

I don't mind walking downhill on this one though because I aced the next one!

I'm from Minneapolis and played both growing up. I remember playing Kaposia when it was only 9-holes! The Valley (North Valley to us old-timers) seemed to be redesigned every couple of years...I remember when they added holes on the other side of the road and we had to walk under the road through the tunnel.
