So I've been hearing about a new course. There is suppose to be 5 acres supposedly to work with for an 18 hole course.
If anyone knows any info on this proposed course please post up. It's creating excitement among the Brainerd players and it would be nice to spread the excitement!

5 acres is only enough for a pretty short 9 hole course.

Looks like 15 acres, not 5. Located at 46.380918, -94.225453.
If they don't have a designer yet, there are two on this thread.

Thanks for some of that info guys. I too have designed a few courses in my day and I would help design and create on this project. Good or Bad weather tomorrow, I think I'm going to scope out that plot tomorrow. See it's possibilities. Seth.W I'll see you around 10:10 tomorrow morning!

Mine are all hear say but I have created 3 courses and I am working on a 4th. They were all made with my portable basket. I created a, TOUR Washington DC DG course. It consists of 18 holes all placed through out Washington D.C. and Arlington VA. It takes you through the National Mall, over the Reflecting pool, by Jeffereson, the Whitehouse, the Capital, Arlington Cemetary and more. It takes about 6 hours or so to play and maybe $10 for parking and gas to go from hole to hole.
I have a 9 hole course I designed in a park in Arlington, VA.
I made an 18 hole course at the local Forest Middle School in Baxter, MN
I have maybe 4 or 5 holes laid out in the Crow Wing County but thats a Crow Wing County Dream Course.

I have done my research and I have sent e-mails, made phone calls and sent resumes to at least 7 different credible course designers to see if they would bring me on board as any part of their staff. I get no response... From any of them. I told them all in my cover letters that I am willing to move anywhere in the America possibly over seas.

Today I went and spent about an hour walking through the designated area set for the DGC. There is a little elevation but lots of trees and a ton of fallen/broken/dead trees scattered through out. I saw one decent sized creek that looked to be about 10 to 12 feet deep and about the same wide. I see potential for an amazing technical course. From the type of land, I don't see any hole here reaching over 350' but I guess it's possible. This land will need work and lots of it to clear it out.
The creek could create some really intesting and challenging Tee shots and/or UpShots but the use of the creek will probably be limited to maybe 2 or 3 holes at most. If they allow the baskets to be placed in close proximity to the creek at all.
As I look over the designated land map I hope we can create 18 holes here that are well layed out so there won't be much need for the phrase "FOUR!" on this course.
I saw two Deer and an Owl as I walked!

Watch it there Johnson. It's just like you to let the "powers that be" run your life and tell you whether or not you get new baskets. Join this league I'm starting and who knows, we might help get a few new baskets in @ Lum and motivate those "powers that be" into action on this new course.

hedfan1
01-08-2011, 07:45 PM
Lum Park but 18 holes... Lum Park will be nothing like this 18 hole course. This will be longer, tighter and more technical of a course than Lum could ever imagine being. I can see tight gap shots, long tunnel shots, technical dog legs and water all coming into play. I don't think there will be a single hole like #3, #4, #5, #8 or #9 at Trailside Park. Holes like #1, #2, #6 and #7 but with more threes, tighter fairways and more punishment for going off course. You wait, you wait and see Jouhnson, you'll see...
Johnson

The course in Crosslake has potential to be truly great, the 9 they have are short, fun and technical. They have plenty of room to expand the course, I've walked back in those woods and there are trails everywhere, lots of potential, prettier scenery than Chum park too.

Brainerd, MN’s Fly-By Disc Golf League
Goals:
- Improve the quality of the Lum Park disc golf course by raising funds to purchase new baskets and other amenities such as bridges and cement tee pads.
- Create a friendly and inviting environment by offering local disc golf players an opportunity to create a sense of community and camaraderie through friendly competition.
- Give the Brainerd Parks & Recreation a tangible example of the local, proactive disc golf community. This will hopefully inspire them to push forward with the creation of the Trailside 18 hole disc golf course. Trailside Park is located on the corner of Beaver Dam Rd. N. & County Rd. 49 N. in Brainerd, MN.
The league will begin in May and will be centered on the Bag Tag system. The Fly-By League will be hosting five tournaments and taking part in the Annual Lum Park Tournament in September. All tournaments except in September will be 18 holes of long and short tees at Lum Park. The first tournament will be where you receive your bag tag and league rules.
Tournament Dates:
Tuesday, May 3rd @ 5:30 - Tuesday, June 7th @ 5:30 - Tuesday, July 5th @ 5:30
Tuesday, August 2nd @ 5:30 - Saturday, September 3rd @ 9:30 a.m.
The October tournament will be played only by the top sixteen Bag Tag holders over a two separate week period in a single elimination, sweet sixteen style bracket.
Saturday, October 1st @ 11:00 a.m. (Rounds 1 & 2)
Saturday, October 29th @ 11:00 a.m. (Rounds 3 & 4)
All Tuesdays with out a tournament will have other disc golf events, location will vary.
Events: (Random Doubles, Ace Race, Travel to Highly Rated Courses, etc.)
In between events, at any time, players in the league can play challenge matches where two or more players play for tags. These challenges can take place at any course under any circumstances that all players agree upon prior to the start of the match.
To join the Fly-By Disc Golf League it will cost $30.00 to join, which pays for your Bag Tag and the ability to participate in any of the tournaments except the September tournament which is $10.00 to play or $15.00 to play plus get a T-Shirt.

Don't mean to discourage your work Greg, but maybe you should promote this league closer to spring. I mean, don't stop your work, but it's February, we have plenty of time.

It starts in May. Why do I need to wait for April to come up with ideas, make tentative plans and think about things. What's fun about making plans? There plans, they are ideas. I could spend most of my time posting on DGCR about pointless things like Bruce Lee's ability to match up in present day MMA or I could use my imagination to better our local course, our daily playing experiance, our local economy. Maybe generate more intrest in our sport or come up with ideas to grow our chances to play. You complain about me sending you bridge plans but I don't hear you complaining about me spending 3 hours on the course shoveling our tee pads and walking paths to make it more fun and less of a Pain in the @$$ to play.

So it sounds like they will be harvesting old growth trees to help with funding for the Trailside DGC. This will be happening this summer. The course looks like it will still be at the earliest, 2012 before completion.
I present the league to the park and rec board on February 28th. It sounds like we will have their blessing and a bit of their backing but they will not be acquisitioning any funds so it's all on us. They will help promote it in some of the park and rec bulletins.
I have a great idea for getting free exposure but it will take some efforts on the league members as well as a possible local business sponsor.
I have a meeting with someone who was successful at getting multiple sand volleyball courts and leagues set up in Brainerd a few years back to share and spread ideas for raising funds.

Always wanted to play with a fellow DGCR member. It's worth the drive just to meet the crew! Four DGCR members just in Brainerd, we'd love to have you come play in our league, might have to double check with Hed but I think the monthly tourney's are members only. However we do weekly events on tuesdays, random doubles, ace races, one pick a partner tourney, one tripled tourney and a whole lot me, stop by this thread and we'll keep you posted. There are some really good courses in Cloud if your up for the drive. To be honest Lum park isn't all that great, poor basket conditions, crappy bridges, short holes. The mission of leagues is mainly to raise funds for baskets and bridges and make Lum more respectable, cheers.

hey grip, if your looking for courses near Motley, don't spend the time to go to staples, I see it as a huge dissapointment. Wadena has a pretty nice 9 hole course. Lots of goose poop though. Don't let Johnson mis lead you, Lum park is a fairly respectable course besides the final 5 hole baskets like Johnson said. They catch the discs, sometimes. It has some nice Ace runs, some hyzer drives, anhyzer drives, straight drives and one longer hole for gripNripen. Therer are some nice gaps to shoot, water that comes into play with short and long tees to mix it up.
If you came to play and it happens to be the first Tuesday of the month we might let a few DGCR members join for a little fun ;)
Otherwise if your in the area and looking to play, send any of us (discordye, Johnson or myself) a message. I'm sure at least one of us could make it out to show you around the place.
