View Full Version : Do you warm up before a round?

I have noticed that some people hit the practice basket before playing, and some just walk up and start playing. I personally like to warm up before a round. Do you warm up, or do you start playing?

I'm usually a walk up and throw kinda guy.... I might take a "few" drives to warm up but that is usually it....

getting older, i try to stretch a bit before a round...i seem to play a better round if i throw 5-10 drives and practice putting for 5-10 minutes prior to tee off

i usally play a few holes then go back to 1, but i still keep score so if im doing good ill just keep playin i guess it depends on the course,i prefer wooded finesse courses so warm-ups arent always needed so i might just find a quiet spot and get my putts lined up but i never use the practice baskets

I walk the course if I have never played it, if I have played it I might go throw a couple drives I typically throw about 10 putts on a practice basket, making sure to end after hitting 2 or 3 in a row.

I like to hit the practice basket for about 5-10 minutes before going to the first tee.

i might take a little, but usually i just play two rounds. The first one, i don't really expect to do well. i use it to experiment with new shots and whatnot. the second is the counting round.

Well, my general routine includes stretching and finding my balance. It also includes taking some time to focus on my snap as well. I typically do not spend time putting unless there is a wait on the course. Generally speaking it will take me a bit to warm up on my putts but I also seem to waste good putts in practice. As I have refined my putting I find that as long as muscle memory is in tact it really does not matter, at the same time you need to develop that muscle memory. So, I generally like putting after a round to do this rather than before.

so wasting good putts in practice is really ca ca, since it's muscle memory and you need to develop it

it is very important to warm up (stretching is important, but something you should do every day) - starting with light tosses, maybe some putting to get your blood flowing and wake your muscles up
the farther you throw, the more important it is to warm up properly so that you do not risk injuring yourself
personally, I always do a little stretching and light jogging around, then either putt or do some throwing motions with a towel to loosen up - then if it is a practice round, I'll pick the disc I'll throw for hole 1, set it aside, and throw most of my bag to warm up, then when its time to throw the disc I set aside, I start my round and start keeping score - if it is a tournament, I am always there at least an hour early, whether I know the course or not, to get a full warm up

True dat. How could you "waste" a putt  What, you only have 10 putts for the day? Gotta use them wisely? What a load.

^^ I do that aswell. Gives me time to work the nerves out, and get any kinks out that I dont want to deal with during the round.

Definitely stratch and throw drives to get warmed up. I will also putt for 10-15 minutes. It hasn't stopped my injuries, hip pointer, elbow tendinitus, sore back, arthritis in ankle, but if I stretch and throw enough, I will be as loose as I need to be. I'm 48, so it takes longer to loosen up.

That is the way I play as well. I might take a few practice throws while I'm waiting for someone else to go ahead of me.

If I have time, I warm up, otherwise I warm up during the round. I try to make time to stretch and practice putt and drive, but it doesn't always work out that way. Nothing better than shanking that first drive off the fairway.

i dont think you need to practice or warm-up your putting once youve got your technique down but i know it helps to get it zoned in before you play, you shouldnt need to get it lined up all the time but dont add strokes in your round to get your putts straight, if throwin 3-4 putts to see where your at will make you blow putts while your playin then you lack confidence not skill or muscle memory

just tell your friends you need to go to the woods and boost your confidence before you start

You should make that your tournament nickname.

Why yes my good man, I tend to warm up by bringing my electric kettle and preparing a nice cup of Irish Breakfast tea by Twinings, jolly good stuff, really invigorating. After tea and biscuits, I do some brief calisthenics and stretching (I've pulled a back muscle twice before) then it's time for meditation and chi alignment.
Nah, I just stretch a bit and play a warm up round, try to get into a comfortable rhythm. In basketball I was a streaky shooter, couldn't hit a spot up j to save my life, had to shoot off the dribble. DG is the same, hurry up and slow down kills me.

Wasting good putts happens when you make one of those long ones that you wished you could save for the round when you can cheer loudly for it and hopefully mess someone else up on another card.
No seriously, if I practice before hand it is all short stuff, stuff I know that I am going to make. But it is all the stuff I know I would make on the first hole anyways, right?

I always stretch a bit before throwing. And I usually play better if I throw a few warm-up drives before stepping up to the tee for my first throw that counts.

I gotta tell you - I like your style BrotherDave. Weird, because I actually have a brother named Dave.
I find that - should I warm up the older and more out of shape I get - absolutely. Do I? - not always, because man sometimes you just want to get out there. If the course is empty, I like warming up on hole 1 if there is no warm-up basket. I pulled my hammie running for a practice drive the other day so as not to hold up getting started. Bad idea.
"Always stretch the hammies!!!" :D (Maybe this will be my new slogan)

It all depends if it is a casual round or a tournament round. For rounds that I'm serious about doing well in, I will definitely warm up. I like a good 15-20 minutes of putting before doing anything else. Then I stretch out my arm/shoulder, back, and legs really well. Then a few drives and I'm good to go.
For casual rounds, it's nice to have the excuse, "well, I didn't warm up enough". Ha ha

I have seen people do a little yoga session before their round once. Not my style, but I thought it was cool.

My warm up session consists of downing a few beers. I'm good to go after that. =)
