View Full Version : Your favorite downhill hole?

There are few thing as rewarding as nailing a huge downhill shot. Many of the users at this forum have played many more courses than I have, and as I'm traveling, I'll be playing catchup on my course count.
Locally, Ellison park has a great 540' hole down a big sledding hill, and Black Diamond (Emery Park) in Buffalo has a pretty epic 1166' hole down a ski slope.
Ellison is wide open, while Emery snakes down the hill through the woods.
I'm gonna play Solitude Mountain resort in Utah when I visit my brother later this year. Throwin' down mountains looks fun...
Any epic hangtime holes you can suggest?

#16 at Coyote Point is 600 downhill, but you must be 250 higher than the hole.....I think it could be reached with a putter.....my wraith at it was about 250 too long lol

#15 at Winter Park in Kewaunee - 715', 100' drop, but 225' of flat length on the green. It's like ripping a nice 375-400' bomb on flat ground to reach the pin, but that elevation will wreak havoc on your HSS and LSS!

#13G is also a real fun downhill touch shot with a lot of trouble present. 275' with a 75' drop. You must drive through all the trees, over a steep sided washout crevasse, over a creek, and don't go long because there is an OB fence 20' past the pin.

Hole #15 (Original hole #12) at Mt Airy, 560'. No one was allowed to take credit for designing this hole because it's so natural. The basket is to the right at the bottom in the center of a mound. Your upshot has to land close or it's down the hill on either of the 3 sides, unless you're short.

You better be left handed with a great turn over that fades a little at the end.
I did see a guy from Sweden land a Roc 20' to the right once, he missed the putt.... Climo was on that card back in the early 90s.

I played both of those Tuesday with Mando. There are a couple of good ones on the "Steady" Ed at the IDGC, too. And speaking of Mando, Sugaree plays almost entirely downhill. There aren't any crazy long bombs, or hikes, but almost every hole plays downhill. I still haven't figured out how he did it.

This hole plays 455' from the tee in a straight line to the basket. It's 240' to the front water's edge and 350' to the clear the water. If the water scares you, throw the long way around on land and it measures 550'
While it doesn't look like it here, the tee is 75-100' higher elevation than the basket.

http://www.discgolfscene.com/coursepictures/20325_l.jpg
This is a course that could have a lot of up and down holes but the designer used constraint (in a good way in my opinion) by using elevation more subtly throughout the course. It then culminates in this hole: one huge downhill bomb. The payoff hole. Definitely one of my favorites in the state.
There is a continuation of the slope behind the basket, so the approach is always very tough. Not only one of the best downhill holes but one of the best holes period!

That's really tough to narrow down to one single favorite hole. But Then again I haven't really played to many "big" downhill shots. Some of these pictures have some epic looking fairways.
Anyway, of the few courses I've played, I really enjoyed these:
Winthrop Gold #3/Winthrop University Lakefront #5
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/27/a2f12d40.jpg
Circle R - Circ Hill DGC #18
Picture doesn't do justice to this hole. It's long fairway with a steep drop in elevation. The basket is under a huge oak tree.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/612/4f187418.jpg
Renaissance Park #9
The basket placement is what really makes this a fun hole. Picture doesn't really represent the fairway well.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/587/869a47f0.jpg
Old Settlers' Park #16
The tee is on top of the earthen dam. The drop in elevation seems much greater when you're standing on the tee. Once you're down at the waters edge looking back at the tee, it doesn't look nearly as threatening. The basket is located to the left of the large trees in the center of the picture. This is one of my favorite water holes.

Dude, my bad. I must have missed the stipulation defining only ski slopes as qualifiers for this thread. Mods please feel free to remove my post since it doesn't meet humchris85 criteria for what is considered 'down'hill.
For what it's worth, #18 at Circ Hill easily matches or exceeds some of the other posts. The picture provided just doesn't offer a sense of perspective in relation to the immediate surrounding terrain.

#13@Sioux Passage (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=63) in St Louis is a great 548ft downhill shot that me and Red Army both emptied our bags on. The contour of the hill makes the discs look great in the air.

#5 @West Lake (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2418) in Davenport, Iowa is off the top of a Dam. The picture doesn't show the depth, or how high up you really are. This is from the longs, with a total of 826ft from Tee to basket. It is a glorious downhill shot. Just don't get wet.

And then there's #16 at Pratt Park, also in VA like Golden Hills. Neither qualifies as an "epic" down-hill hole, but man are they both fun. This one is just 175'... but the pin basically sits on a peninsula surrounded by the stream. Actually, what a great back 9 in general!

@russmb that pic at west lake is actually the short tee. The long starts all the way on the other side of the dam (you are looking at the concrete structures up on top the dam and shooting the tee shot from below it, your up shot is ideally to the short tee or more than likely, you hit the concrete, or fly over them into the other reservoir) I meant to pm you about it, sorry. Awesome hole regardless though, +1 for sioux #13. One of my favorites is 13 at camden 2 in Milan IL

Horning's Hideout, Hole 8, Meadow Ridge. 420 feet long with 124 foot drop through a tree tunnel. You will want to throw more then one but after the first one kicks way wide or flips in the wind, will change your mind about this quick. This course has a lot of up and down.

Yellow = ground
Red = flightline
Z-Boaz hole 9 is always fun. A blind shot, about 360 ft. and maybe 80 ft of drop. To start off, you have to clear the tree-tops, maybe 15 ft higher than the box. Straight out about 250-300 ft, then fade in towards the target.

#19 at Hickory Hills (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=647) in Traverse City, MI.
http://www.discgolfscene.com/coursepictures/20325_l.jpg
This is a course that could have a lot of up and down holes but the designer used constraint (in a good way in my opinion) by using elevation more subtly throughout the course. It then culminates in this hole: one huge downhill bomb. The payoff hole. Definitely one of my favorites in the state.
There is a continuation of the slope behind the basket, so the approach is always very tough. Not only one of the best downhill holes but one of the best holes period!

i figured someone would mention this one. major risk reward on this one, if you overshoot it left you could have a ridiculous blind uphill shot coming back. heres a couple shots i took there this fall. traverse city and grand traverse bay in the background.

Besides all the other long, brutal, challenging goodness on this course, this whole makes me want to play it even more.
I must LOVE bombing off any kind of hill! Seriously, this thread and the pictures makes my heart race! One or two of these shots are a must in my book for a 5-disc course. 5-disc courses need that complete variety of shots and terrain!

Hole 11 at The Tailings in Iron River MIhttp://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3925 It's about 350', steep drop and, as you can see, very narrow, to the left dogleg, then about another 250' slightly down to the pin. Awesome hole!
This one is a beauty and requires power AND accuracy. You need to huck it like a 375' drive on flat land, but you can't turn it over much at HSS or you'll be OB over the path and you still need it to come back and give some LSS fade, but then also not too much fade or you'll be in rough on the left. It's almost a 90 dogleg left, and the additional flat length to the basket means that even a monster drive off the hill leaves you with a 150' upshot with OB right of the pin.

#3 at Golden Hills... Nice! I just threw a little tomahawk with an Aviar when I played it and it landed on its' top and slid down to the basket. When I tried to actually throw the hole RHBH, no matter how easy, it seemed to just sail on by over the big rocks and down the gully.

fun hole- used to be hole 1 before they reconfigured the course- easy little overhand throw.
in virginia i'd say the pick of the litter is 17 at walnut creek. 15 at hawk hollow is probably the best hole in the state but is only severely downhill for half of it.

Apparently there are now two hole 18s there, both of which play off the top of the dropoff all the way down to that same basket, pretty awesome to play two 18 hole courses both ending on shots like that. Diamond X is just about at the top of my wishlist, I love extreme courses like that.
Diamond X: So Sweeeet..
Awesome to bomb that shot on 18, and it only takes a good 15 minutes to rock climb down the 200 ft. bluff to your disc...

Not much in the way of drastic elevation at my course, but #4 and #11 are both fun downhill shots, my favorite being #11...only 181', with OB creek just behind the pin and a small tree just to the front right of the basket to knock down any sharp RHBH hyzer shots (as well as a not-very-LHBH-friendly tree even earlier on the fairway):

Highbridge has so many epic downhill holes, I won't even bother to list them all here, but Gold #8, 1325' all downhill, is a blast! It'd take too many pics to showcase the entire hole, so moving on...
Blueberry Hill #2 and #3 are both awesome bombers with multiple pin locations.
Hole #2 plays to the old elevated bolf tees (usually into a prevailing headwind) surrounded by rocks:
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/386/d9adfbfd.jpg
Hole #3 plays into the same direction as #2, so again you usually have a headwind to deal with:

Hole 12 Carousel is a sub-optimal design as a nice way of putting it. Blind shot downhill thru woods with OB water behind the pin. Much better if the tees (long & short) were placed where players could see the basket and watch the throw, and more importantly, where it kicks if you hit a tree on the way down or if you went OB.

This pictures don't do the hole justice. Great risk/reward hole. 402' hole with the basket just 17' beyond the pond. So that's a 385' carry needed to keep from getting wet. And the wind is frequently in your face on the hole. I've only tried to clear it twice. I made it over by about 5' one time. And the other time, I flipped my drive over so far that it cleared the pond to the right... not beyond it. At least I was dry.:D

Here's two of the downhill holes from Sertoma Field in Walhalla, SC I like playing. This course has 6 down hill holes of different lengths but all pretty holes that are all duecable.
With hole 15 the basket is tucked to the left behind the last tree before the clearing ends. A nice ace run hole.
Hole 17 is a bit trickier. The basket is hard to see from the tee with a step drop off just past the hole.

I have one in that pond....second shot though. :) Thought I was doing well to "play it safe on the first shot...." Tried to be a little too precise on the second; when I should have been making sure I overshot the pin. :)

Not sure that's a very good hole technically. Seems like the risk is too high for the reward in going for it. That means it should result in mostly 3s with smart play. That doesn't mean players play it smart however. As I reacll, the short tee played much better technically.

When I went for it, I had the wind at my back. Otherwise, it's layup time for me, too. And overshooting the pin and having to putt back downhill towards the pond is no fun so I understand why you wanted to be precise.

I really like the hole. It's right at the edge of my "go for it" range. I had a good shot and a fair shot at deuce the two times when I went for it and blew the putts. I bet you're right about the scoring being more 3's than 4's for experienced players since laying up is such a good option. I'm really surprised that it's considered a par 4, as a matter of fact.
And check out all of the 2s from this group. Granted, several of them are sponsored pros, but still...

Are you talking about the Paw Paw shot??? I'd agree that the hole isn't all that fantastic technically but for completely the opposite reason - its just an easy downhill hyzer shot. Unless the wind kicks up, this hole is just a matter of how long the comeback putt is...

I'm not aware of an OB fence. I think that the grass is open all of the way up to the driveway. So that really could change things.
And, if you barely have the power like I do, then it is still quite the risk. :D

Hole #1 & #10 on the Woodshed play over the ugly pond. The basket sits within 10' of the muck on a little levy. If you go long on it, you might be rolling for a while. And if you're in the drink... ugh! :gross:
Regarding the video, I can't believe that Tony got wet. He has way more arm than is needed to clear. It looks kind of like he slipped and lost his footing a bit. And there's a whole series of videos from the 2007 WV Open on youtube. You can see the whole finals round.

if you can throw 350+ hole 18 on whipping post is not scary, merely a deuce op. i don't recall there ever being ob behind the pin that would come in play. tony was probably trying to throw an aviar over it for entertainment's sake at that point as he was out of the mix.

I've got a few. Hole #11 at Oak Ledges in Massillon Ohio. Just under 400', long gradual right turn. Downhill and pretty open ceiling, so I toss a Wizard with some anhyzer and a little height under it and let it glide out towards the pin. There's a big dropoff behind the basket that will add a few strokes to your score if you overshoot the basket.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/342/c955d4e3.jpg
Hole 8 at Deis Hill in Dover. I think this is from the white tee, they have a blue tee further back now if I'm not mistaken. It's over 400' from the blue with a fairly narrow gap, with some gradual downhill elevation throughout most the fairway.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/2516/f9de7d6f.jpg
Then there's 14 at Deis Hill too, gotta mention that. If you look straight through the gap at the two big trees casting shadow down in the middle of the fairway...the basket is to the right tucked in behind the trees a bit.

Tight straight alley straight down hill. During tourneys I had good success picking a little hole in the canopy and thumbing this one, as my putter shots could slide too far through the gap, or get a nasty kick into jail. Its a ton of fun to play this one.

Rockburn Branch hole 15 - I am surprised that no one has posted this before. Tee off between the trees, fly high over the meadow, and then cross the OB creek and into the woods. The 400’ B pin sits on the left side of the woods near the creek; the 505’ C pin sits in the back of the woods on the right.
A big-air drive where placement is as important as distance.

Yeah, the tee pad is on a slant a little, and as I said the pic is pretty bad. Its downhill enough you have to hold back on a putter or stable mid to not overthrow it. Its a fun one.
There are others in the mountains that are grip and rip and hope you find it 1000's of feet away, but this one is fun touch shot that can punish you if you miss.

Sorry, but is just not a very good hole. It is impossible to reach either pin location off the tee (barring some crazy fluky luck), but even a mediocre drive yields a little pitch to the pin for an easy 3. Now, if the pin was 30-40' past the creek, that would be an awesome hole.
Seems like the designer really wanted to use those rock formations back where the pin locations are (and have a mediocre hole) rather than create a really good risk/reward hole. I was supremely disappointed by that hole. I much preferred hole 13 as far as downhill holes go.

Interesting - you are evaluating the hole from a design perspective. Although your assessment has merit, I view the hole differently. Each time I step up to the tee, I feel like I could have the shot of my life. Very occasionally I do, and I can picture each and every one of those throws in glorious detail. That is why I like the hole – perhaps potential for a glorious shot is my version of Appalachian beauty (which I also appreciate, by the way).
Hole 13 can be birdied more readily, but the risk of bogey is much lower. Meh – fun hole, but not as memorable as #15.
Opinions are what makes horse races, I suppose. :)

Hole 23 is actually hole 8 (when only 9 holes are setup (before the golf course closes), and hole 24 is #9 when only 9 are setup. So if you played the course in the proper order you would play 1 away from the parking lot, 2 back to the parking lot, 3 cross the road and throw down the road, 4 plays from goal post to goalpost, 5 plays tot he corner of the park area, 6 and 7 play towards the golf course ending near the building along the road., then 8 is down the big hill on the golf course, then you wourk your way throught he golf course and finish out on the last two holes (23 comes out of the chute int he woods down a slight hill and #24 shoots back to the parking lot near #1 tee. That is the order it was designed, so you must hae played 23 and 24 first then 1-7 (thinking you were playing in the correct order. This may confuse you but the downhiller is #8 and the last two holes returning you to the parking lot are 23 and 24.

The pin has been permanently moved back about 40 more feet so you have to throw either under or around the big tree limb. I hit the ace on the around line.
Nothing is more satisfying than throwing your entire bag at this hole to close out a round. (That is if you aren't backing up traffic :) )

This is #10 at Camp Fortune DGC in Chelsea QC. This is he closest premier level course to Ottawa. All over a ski hill which makes for great exercise and some long controlled shots. I chose this one as I love how the fairway narrows as you go downhill. The basket is 150 past the ridge and can't be seen off the tee. Crazy sloped green. A 4 is a good score on the hole. 3 is hard and rare and I only know of 2 2's in the history of the hole. I usually throw a wraith or destroyer low down the right side and try to get to the ridge to make a puckering approach shot.

If someone could post the picture of 18s tee for me.
There are multiple pin placements but my favorite is about 440' to the right. It's an extremely satisfying shot to get through the trees on this one. Last time I played there I threw 4-5 extra shots and hit the pole on one of them.

1A is an awesome hole at flip!! I love that shot down hill, basket is hidden behind the tree with a fork in it, a nice throw could possibly ace... the kind of shot you dream about for sure.
#16 at branstrom is really cool too, down a big hill, 350 foot bomb to a basket with a swamp 10 feet behind it!!

#3 Mint Hill, NC near Charlotte. The pic for the hole is misleading because it has become very grown-up since that pic was taken. A tree blocks a high approach and going under the overhanging limb leaves little room to clear a rise. Big arms can hyzer up around the tree, but I don't have a big arm...
Parked a Comet at the pole just before I left Charlotte to move back to Wilmington, NC. Comet love ever since.

Solitude 18. 1200 feet 400 down hill to lifts. Almost aced it last time I played on short location. Only 800something. Seen throws stay in the air for a long Lon time only to land and never be found again.
