View Full Version : Your Winter DG Goals?........

The leaves are falling, the wind is blowing and (for some) white is soon to fall....
Between now and April (ish) the DG season hibernates...
what are your goals for next Summer?
Mine:
Keep with the workout routine. Get stronger and push all the "discing down" discs 25' farther.* (Teebird/Eagle/TL: Up to 350'; Roc/Buzzz: Comfortable with 300' shots; Rhyno: 250' pin point accuracy.)
* Obviously, in kind pushing my distance drivers longer; find the course range of 375-425' with consistency and accuracy (backhand). Lock in my forehand to the same ranges.
For me, this is mainly a weight and strength training mission. I've experimented with tons of discs and the difference, for me, now is strength and (to a much lesser extent) form.

I just want to maintain. Last year, the last round I got in before the snow fell was the best round I played all year. This year, I have yet to play a better round, but some things have been better as I have been working on a lot, and my last round Saturday was solid.
I would like to keep those improvements going but not at the cost of screwing something up while not being able to get out in the snow.

I don't stop playing....though not much progress is made through the winter either, the conditions are just too different.

My goal is to re-fashion my throw into a consistent, fundamentally sound throw that is smooth, easy, repeatable and predictable.
I also plan to develop my off-hand throw (RHBH, I'm a lefty) and my LHFH.
I am currently 875-rated, but have thrown rounds as high as 950 and as low as 815. Consistency at a high level is my goal.

I hope to get out as much as possible, cold does not bother me but the wind, snow and ice might. I have a new DG league to look forward to next year so the founders of the league have a lot of off season work to do.

In the winter, I play a lot of superclass rounds with my zephyrs, they are reallly good for forcing smooth throws and they never dive under the snow. Last winter I was able to get them out to about 230', so I would love to push them out to more like 250', and start working on my lefty throw with them.

Great ideas. I normally have the basket in the garage through winter, getting me out of the elements and last winter, I did a lot of putting practice. Super class disc would definately be fun when I do get out; although the only thing that stopped me last year was snow up to my knees. Makes it really hard to walk.

I started playing this summer so this is my first winter playing. I worked on my driving all summer and now I think I'm going to get a basket for inside and just practice putting in between winter rounds.

One of the great things about superclass discs is that you're never trying to put a lot of power into them, so a standstill throw is ideal. Takes the bad footing and snow up to your knees mostly out of play (while throwing anway, it's still a pain to walk through sometimes).

Makes me wonder if snow shoes work. Not winter boots, but the things that look like raquet ball raquest strapped to your feet.
I might get some to try just for laughs, but I might want to take the temp of my fiance and make sure shes not going to think I've completely lost it and have me taken away.

If you're going to do any kind of run up or x step, you'd probably break something in snowshoes, but if you're only doing standstill throws I could see it working pretty well. I thought about trying cross country skis last winter when there was 3' of snow on my local courses.

During the winter months, my disc golf activity usually plummets to near zero. Now that DST has passed, it's now dark when I get out of work so getting a round in usually doesn't happen during the week. :( That leaves me with the weekends which more times than not, I'm doing something with the family.
This winter is going to be different though. I'll likely hit up the glow league on Thursday nights whenever possible and now that I have a practice basket, I'll be practicing my putts at home. This is going to help my game dramatically as putting is the weakest part of my game.
So to the OP, my goal is to make some significant improvements to my putting game.

Putting, some resistance band routines, more putting, then after that - some more putting. I have the same daylight issues as above ^^, so I will have to putt in the yard with the floodlight on. Starting a glow league isn't a bad idea either!

Winter Goals:
-putt,putt,putt (time to use the practice basket more)
-Get stronger (use my grip squeezie things to strengthen my hands and strengthen my core with yoga and working with an elastic band)
-Lose 20 lbs (will definitely help with endurance and stamina)
-pick up more discs (lost several this summer, need some backups)

I'll continue to work on putting - the weakest part of my game. It's already improved over the last two months (a DisCatcher in the back yard helps a lot!), but I'm still only about 65%. Assuming this winter isn't blizzardville like last year I'll keep playing rounds as often as possible. Although I've been playing off and on since '92 it's only in the last two years that any consistency has developed (thanks to being a full-on DG addict now). The goal is to start beating those guys I play with now who always seems to get me by a couple of strokes - or more on a really rough day. Consistency.

My goal is to get my car fixed do I can drive an hour down the mountain to play in no snow. Woke up this morning to find 1-2 inches on the ground. Winter is here....:|. Now I need to go move all the pins short before we get more snow and the sleeves are burried.

-maybe practice putting at a chair once in awhile
-Once i get abunch of disc golf store gift cards for my b-day and christmas, buy a bunch of discs to admire until spring
- get much better at running and get stronger by weight lifting so i can whoop @$$ in the mile in track in spring
-Manage to play at least once in winter, which will be pretty hard because the closest course open for winter is not easily reachable for me
-Enjoy skiing!
I know a bunch of those didn't have to do with DG, but whatever.

It is possible to play in snow shoes, and it's a heck of a bunch of fun. I couldn't throw backhand tee shots, but forehand wasn't too awkward. And putting on baskets that were literally frozen solid was crazy too!
My goals for the winter...
-Get my knee worked on (just got a referral from DR for phys therapy, woohoo)
-Get my back worked on (DR referral again)
-Convince myself that I still want to compete in 2011
-Read some books on the mental game of golf
-Become more consistent with my FH and push it out another 20'
-Gain a shorter memory for missed putts, lol

Yep, I feels sorry for alls u up in the Great White North. But even playing down south will mean playing in extra clothing. Played a few rounds in long sleeves, long pants already this year. One interesting thing I've found is that it makes u more aware of your body and how it's moving. Anyone else notice this or am I just strange? :o

My goal is to not spend too much $$ buying Great Lakes beer for my snow rounds. Ohio winters suck, but staying inside all day sucks more.
If I could get 400' from a standstill with my Buzz I'll be happy. I usually roll with just a couple FLX Buzzes and some Wizards when it's snowy and icy out, and you're usually lucky if you can see the teepad so run-ups usually don't happen.

Oh, my winter DG goals. Well... Bowling Green OH sucks in the winter. Like really sucks. The wind becomes constant and horrible. Snow isn't to bad just drifts and piles all over the place so you may have one spot with 2" of snow and a mound of 3 and half feet literally right next to it and throwing a disc into one of those bad boys bites. So driving practice will be slim to non... I can do field work on a football field so that will be nice. I would like to really work on putting and actually be confident at 20' and start working to 25'. So maybe a winter of putting and some driving improvement.

Once the time changes around here I only get to play on weekends which is all I really do anyway. I'll change my eating habits, play a lot of XBox and start a daily work out routine. I typically do this from Dec-March. Not putting or driving or anything golf related except for weekend tournament play.

Im still looking for my first ace but came close again.
Funny thing is, I chose to throw my River on a shorter hole where I would normally throw the Core and just threw it nice and easy; easy enough that it faded just slightly enough at the end and you could hear the faint *shing* as it scraped the front of the chains and landed less than 3' from the basket. Had I thrown my Core, it wouldnt have faded and might have gone in; but then again, maybe it wouldnt had been as close either.

Live in SC where we get snow maybe once or twice a year (couple inches), so I plan on discing about the same amount of time... probably a little less due to my job. I will probably disc less in Jan except for practice basket in the yard.
Goals:
-Ace
-PR on home course (which will only be my home course for 3 more weeks until we move)
-Consistency on putts from 40' out
-Increase distance on drives (Current [consistently]: 325' w/ RHFH and 250' w/ RHBH)

Good topic Dj, really got me thinking this morning.
My goals for this winter are to:
A.) Try and maintain my rounds per week average above 2.0 even during the colder months (Currently at 2.95 per week courtesy of the round tracker at www.discgolfscene.com).
B.) Continue working with my mids and putters in my yard as I have time. I know that I will not be able to throw as far as some of the younger players in my area, but I still have a chance to beat them if I am mentally strong and play from the fairway.
C.) Do a better job of staying on top of the Eczema on my hands. Last year it got so bad that I had 6 finger-tips cracked open and bleeding at once, with all the fingers but my pinkie on my throwing hand betraying me.
D.) Get another ace before the year is up (5 sounds much nicer than 4)

This winter i really need to develop a forehand drive. Anything within '100 I'm fine but drives are all spazzy.
I will do a ton of field work and basement putting but usable forehand drives are my ultimate goal.

Why would you stop playing? You might as well take up ball golf if you stop just because its a little cooler.
My primary winter goals:
1. Do a better job of spotting where the discs land in the snow so I don't waste as much time looking for them.
2. Forget the run ups when footing is uncertain. I pulled both the longheads and shortheads of my bicep because I wasn't following thru with my FH due to fear of loosing my footing.

My wife's getting Xmas ideas, so I told her I wanted a portable basket (or two). That's been my goal for a few years now, just haven't been able to save for one! Hopefully that'll keep my putting fresh over the winter...although I DO plan on getting in a few winter rounds as usual! Then I might actually start playing PP360, since every time I tell myself I should play it to work on putting, I get distracted at the prospect of actually playing a round by the time I get to the course. "Sorry, PP360 scorecard, I don't have time for you today!" will hopefully fall out of my frequently uttered phrase vocabulary.

My goal this year is to play les disc golf. I generally play pretty consistantly throughout the winter, but I am finally ready for a break from the game for a while. I have been playing non sto for nearly 4 years with my longest break being 3 weeks during that whole time. I will instead focus on my health, losing weight that is and spending time with my new son. That way come spring I will be all ready to go again for a few more years non stop.
