Looking to see if there is any interest in a west coast DGCR meeting. I know there aren't too many of us on here, but if we plan it in advance far enough we could probably make it work. Post here if you are interested, and also if you have good ideas on when and where it should be.
Here are some courses I think would be good choices (location/baskets/concrete tees):
- The new Chico course - Peregrine Point DGC ;)
- Shady Oaks, Sacramento
- De Laveaga, Santa Cruz
- Golden Gate Park, San Francisco
- Stafford Lake, Novato
I think we need some time to plan this. How does January or February sound? (weather permitting)

I'm totally down...
How about early March?

I'm in. I think the new chico course would be cool. Or maybe something like Finnon so there could be some camping for folks that make the drive. Or why not tahoe in april when the snows gone. Plenty of courses and accomidations. Wherever it is in Nor cal i'd make it happen. There is 4-5 peeps that I play with on a regular basis that are dgcr members. They just don't post often. Keep me posted.

As much as I enjoy O'vale and GG they're a little crowded for my likings. Although we'd fit in with a big group. Penn is a good in between for chico/tahoe/sac players.

Yeah, I think we should settle on a Central CA location... and someplace with camping. If us SoCal peeps make it, we're probably gonna come for a weekend and will need somewhere either cheap or free to stay/camp.

I agree. Something Central Cal would probably bring out more heads. I know I would try and make Central, but Nor Cal just a little too far.

I like the camping idea, and I am fine with going a little further south. What about New Hogan Dam? Need some suggestions for good central CA courses (since I have not played any).
The furthest south I have played is Pinto Lake in Watsonville, and De Laveaga would get my vote over Pinto. I agree that Shady Oaks and Golden Gate are usually too crowded.

I'm already starting to look at courses, camping, etc...
Should we get all crazy and get some discs stamped?
"First Annual DGCR West Coast Meet Up"? Tourney?
jimbosprint
10-27-2010, 01:03 PM
I think we need more than 9 posts to justify a custom stamp or tourney. :p
Lets get a location and a date settled first, then we can see how many can make it.
I was originally thinking northern California was centrally located on the west coast, but with no response yet from Oregon or Washington, I would go as far south as Monterey. I still think Santa Cruz or New Hogan Dam would be good options.

I played Ryan Ranch in Monterey recently - it's 27 holes, an excellent challenge, more-or-less central in the state ...
... also know a guy who's been playing up and down the central valley - he says there's some good courses there too (Fresno, Boogersfield, etc.) although frankly I prefer Monterey ... :D

Ok, ok, I'll step up and volunteer to be the Official California DGCR Spring 2011 Meet Up Organizer.
I'll create the polls, etc and do all the groundwork, i.e. tourney schedules interfering, camping, food, flyers, etc.
I guess that is if ya'll have me.... :o
I was thinking earlier in March, but late March means it will be warmer.... I'll create the poll in a couple of days.
Since we have about 4-5 months to plan, I think we should do something special. A cheesy t-shirt at least.
Maybe I'll create another poll on what extra stuff we can do.
Also, this is a weekend trip right, not just a couple of rounds one day?

Not a real fan on Pinto Lake myself the middle 9 are a bit too open for my tastes.
As far as camping here are the best options in the area:
New Brighton is a great location (on the cliffs above the beach), close to both DeLa and Aptos courses. The draw back is it is hard to get a reservation....although getting a group site might be easier.

http://www.reserveamerica.com/servlet/Partner/452/r/campgroundDetails.do?subTabIndex=0&contractCode=ca&parkCode=newb
Henry Cowell is another option (in the Redwoods), close to both DeLa and Black Mouse courses.
Should be easier to get a site here:

too much responsibility for this scatter-brain. i think snap is an ideal organizer.
camping as close to a course as possible is crucial i think. id rather our campsite be situated REALLY close to one course and we just play that course the whole time than kind of close to two courses. i know ill want to be spending as much time as possible on the links and will probably be sick of driving.

Hey guys i just wanted to chime in and say it's awesome to see another regional meet organizing! I hope it is as rewarding for you all as the mid-atlantic meet was for us.
Here are some things I learned from organizing the Mid-Atlantic Meet. They may help:
Started planning it 10 months in advance.... that was wayyy too early. I thought it would be plenty time for people to block out the weekend, instead it was too far in advance for people to remember and they inevitably double-booked. (3 or 4 months out seems ideal)
Everybody raved about being at a private course. No casual players, no pedestrians, no park police. We were able to camp right there and we policed ourselves.
Everybody loved having many +3/5 rated courses nearby. They went and played those in scheduling gaps.
T-shirts.... if you're gonna make them up, don't wait till the last minute while trying to judge sizes and quantity. Just order enough Large and XL's.
Food.... Vegan Ray made some awesome grub, yes, but the catering was the bulk of the donation. I think next year we will do the "bring your own food" option and have CFR discs made up.
Keep it BYOB. I brought a trunk-full of soda cans and water bottles (72 cans and 30 bottles) that I offered to sell two for a dollar, setting out a bucket for people to put money in using the honor system. I came home with 12 cans and bottles and $7.00. Which didn't even cover the ice. :(
The outhouse rental was extremely cheap and worthwhile. If you're playing a public course, it probably won't be needed.

I'm down with the idea of doing this somewhere like New Hogan Dam, The Santa Cruz / Monterey area would be cool as well. Central Callifornia would definatly be best, but if some So-Cal People wanted to do some real long distance driving you could come up and play a weekend @ Birds of Paridise (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3009) up here in Humboldt County. We could camp onsite and play some other courses around if other people wanted to make it a long weekend.

Honestly, I don't have a preference to a specific course. I was just hoping to get something close to the center of the state. Driving from SoCal to the north side of Sacremento seems a bit one sided to me.

If your gonna poll the places where we should meet up at I recommend limiting the suggestions to say 5-10 different courses and let everyone decide from those.
But Santa Cruz is an excellent, central to all area.

Yeah, the poll is going to be only a handful of courses....
Trying to keep this simple!
The Marysville/Tahoe idea is a good one... but unfair to the SoCal heads. Central is best for everyone....
Should I PM everyone from CA about this or would I just be wasting lots of time?
Mods, any way to message everyone from CA without having to go to each person's page? Mass message?

Tahoe will have snow on the courses around that time. Out of the question. As far as central ca there isn't really anywhere legit. Coyote Point is kind of a good central location. Waiting for owner of property to get back to me on private course.

If the midwest and eastern meet ups were any indication; the numbers showing will be fairly small for the first year anyway. Those that did go to those two had great fun, by all appearances...which may help with yours. I would suggest that you build it around Apoth or Zennys already somewhat formed groups. I also agree that you should choose it by course/camping; as then, all who do attend, will have a very fond memory of the place played.

- New Hogan has the facilities, but to be honest the golf is a bit boring ( it could be awesome there, but the course is fairly short with the exception of exceptional hole 17).
- Pinto Lake doesn't have the facilities
- Ryan Ranch is a great call, but no camping
- Browns and Bows would be amazing, but it is far for socal
- Tarwater (a temp course we've set up before) has camping nearby at an incredible state park in the redwoods of the santa cruz mountains. March is a perfect time to play there, before the grass gets too long.
- maybe we get Junipero in before then. We could then convince the parks dept to allow camping there for a weekend in march. Long distance peeps could then fly into SFO, as the park is less than a mile from the airport. We'll see...

There's Birds Of Paridise (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3009) in Southern Humboldt, with the Southern Humboldt community park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3712)nearby, though we might not even want to play it as BOP is so good. I'm not going to push hard for Casitas because it's just easier for me but there are a few pros. I do understand that it's not exactly right smack in the middle of California.
* Plenty of camping. Campground M is next to the course
* Lots of other activities nearby
* I can change baskets to any of the 3-5 positions so we can play a different course every round
* I have buried pirate treasure all over the course
* Night golf is an option

We will have to see on Nor-Cal'ers coming down south. For people like me up here in the far north end of the state it's much farther than it is for people you are considering north like Sac area. For me it's an extra 6 hours before I even reach Sac, let alone So-Cal. Turtle Rock is a fun course, and you can camp right there for prety cheap, the one problem I had with the camping was that the ground was realy rocky and I wasn't preped for that, and slept rather little that night. In fact everyone I had come with ended up pileing into my car turning the heater on and drinking brandy while hot boxing the car. When the sun started coming up we decided we wern't going to get any sleep, so we went and played a sunrise round. It kinda messed with my pics, but it was all good.

I don't know if you saw the fine print on one of the props that just passed in the Marysville District, but apparently there is no longer disc golf for a 500 mile radius of the district. I know, it sucks. But the law is the law. I guess you'll have to move the California Meetup closer to SoCal.

Also is this a 1-day or a weekend? I feel like Santa Cruz, Monterey, or Visalia would be a good choice for a weekend DG getaway since there's multiple courses in those areas.

Skyline is enjoyable, hard, but enjoyable. If we are able to get ahold of the right people we might be able to get to play Napa's secret course, The Arm Farm. I met people that will be able to get us in when I was playing the Vintage Cup this year. I'll try to get ahold of them at the next Vintage Cup if we decide that we are going to do this trip there.

Just a warning - if you want a friendly, casual round with buddies Stafford may not be a great option. You hike a mountain and it takes HOURS. Also there's not really anything close to it course-wise. It's a good hour out of SF (and 45 min from Skyline I believe).
I know I suggested Santa Cruz (read: DeLa) which takes hours, but DeLa is more fun IMO.
Either way if I'm free that weekend count me in - I'll go where there's a crowd :)

This isn't really going to be a tourney.... more just a meet up centered around disc golf, beer, and debauchery. Although we could organize a super informal tourney type scenario.

In my opinion, I think doing one in NorCal and another in SoCal would be ideal. Two meetups is a chance to get to meet more people who are not make it to one or the other. Which would further build acquaintences and friendships. Also, you would be playing more courses that you may or may not be used to playing.

A fun way to do some informal competition is to do a singles round for bragging rights, then use the scores of that round to seed doubles partners (best score with worst, second best with second worst etc.), ends up making some even doubles competition in most cases.

No kidding right?
The thing is, it's not like soCal golfers couldn't come to a norCal meet. I'd imagine that vice versa is true as well. But the state is large enough to make it geographically undesirable for people like humChris to get to SoCal. We'll be able to get enough people for a weekend or two either way IMO.

Ok, let's say I create a poll and De La is picked. Now let's say about 30-40 heads are gonna show up. Where will they stay?
Let me continue with some research before I start a poll...
I'm trying to find a centrally located course that has either camping on site or super nearby that will fun for everyone, including beginners.
Dude that's even better:thmbup:

Great idea! As long as we keep it informal and no pressure, it should work. I'll be contacting all the major disc companies and retailers to see if they can donate/sell for cheap some plastic for ace awards, etc.

The problem is logistics:
Let's say De La gets picked. Now we have to find reasonably close camping for a large group of people. Then I have to start collecting money from peeps. Reservations and inquiries must be made.
The most ideal thing would be to find a private course, which CA has, that could accommodate us all and not be too expensive. Unfortunately the courses that fit the bill are way north, killing the idea of having it in a central location.
The idea of having two meets is appealing... are you suggesting having them the same time, or two different times of the year? And if we did two, who gets theirs first, North or South?
The questions, they are endless.....
