View Full Version : Ripped skin/callus off middle finger knuckle?

The first time I tried backhanding my Champ Boss a few months ago, I ripped off a chunk of skin on my middle finger second knuckle, not the top of the knuckle but in between the fingers middle/index.
I was backhanding my Star Boss yesterday and ripped off some skin again in the same place although I think it may have been a callus now because its not bleeding or doesn't hurt like it did a few months ago.
So...my question is...do you have a callus on the middle finger knuckle where I described? Where else do you have calluses? I have another on the tip of my middle finger which I think is from forehand, and from backhand on my index finger but more toward the the outter side of my finger.

I play rhbh. I have a callus in the exact same spot on my middle finger and one on the side of the tip of my index finger.
My left hand has crazy calluses on each finger from playing guitar. I can stick a pin into the tips of any of those fingers and not feel a thing.

DGA drivers usually are rounded off in the bead and release more smoothly. If it becomes a problem you may want to look into some of their plastic.

Same goes for Discwing.

Is it even called a bead if there's no bead? We need an "Anatomy of a Disc" chart.

Sorry, I was referring to the bottom inside edge of the rim. Should have made myself clearer.

No worries. I called it the exact same thing. =)

I have an intersting injury from disc golf. I throw RHBH and use the power grip for most shots except puts. From driving on my right hand index finger right in the seam of my first knuckle below my fingernail I have split this open everytime I go play. I try to help it heal and seal up before the next time I go, but I play too often apparently as it opens up everytime. Anyone else have this?

Different sport but I had a friend that had a similar probably and superglued the "problem area".

I used to do that when i worked on an irrigation system on a golf course, I was always digging in wet soil then my hands would dry out, eventually they would crack and I would repeat the process. But I also was inhaling a lot of PVC glue and primer in those days, bending over and holding the pipe together while it cured. It was a nice break in the day! Maybe I will give it a shot again, I am just not sure it will hold because of the constant moving of the finger when I am discing.

Thats where I have a callus on my index finger, top outter part near the nail. I remember it being sore when I began practicing backhand drives, but I've never had it split open, atleast I don't remember. I had to play with some under armor gloves when I was sore, which really helps.

I have recently started throwing RHBH & RHFH (natural LHBH) and I got a scrape in that exact place after a few (quite a few) throws. I used medical tape around the knuckle, wrapped carefully to avoid binding. It works great and no further injury and it's healing up nicely. I also put tape on my left forefinger, last (end of finger) knuckle for the same reason. It doesn't hinder my throw, and helps avoid scraping injuries.
A good band-aid might also work.

You might try some Moleskin by Dr. Scholl's or Second Skin by Spenco. Or a similar blister treatment.
I've never had any problems with blisters or cracked skin, but I've always had really good skin. I don't even use shaving cream. Just my Gillette Mach 5 and a little water.
Funny you should mention the Boss, as well. A guy I was playing with this evening was talking about how his Boss cuts his fingers.
One more thing, I really like the "anatomy of a disc" idea, but the image that's been posted here is a bit small. Is there a larger version somewhere on the 'net? I might also like to see an "anatomy of a throw" diagram. Might be more "in theme" on Disc Golf Review than here, but I would like to know if it exists.

I have a callous both on the center of the pad of my index finger, and also just off of the side of the second knuckle seam toward the end of my index finger...

That is where my open cut is. It simply splits open after a 4 round day I guess. The seam is where it splits open and although it isn't very long (1/4 " maybe) it is annoying when I put the rim of the disc right in there on my drives, especially with the destroyer or a sharp rimmed driver.

i used to only throw RHFH. i had an avenger that really ripped up the base of my index finger, between the lower 2 knuckles. it was especially bad on cold, dry days in the winter. i mostly throw RHBH now, and that disc is at the bottom of the lake at Bryan Park, but that callus is still going strong. i have yet to get any from throwing backhand, though. do you guys throw with a 4-finger grip? i don't get how you can get a callus on your middle finger throwing backhand.

A friend of mine puts his index finger along the outside edge of the disc and just has his middle and ring fingers holding it underneath; that's one way to get a callus on the middle finger.
