Which is a better choice for distance overhand throws? Also when throwing overhand which is better, understable or overstable discs?

For distance, either one. Same toss -- the disc is just the other way around. Some can tomo further than thumb -- others, vice versa.

Tomo twists to the right and falls left
Thumber twists to the left and falls right
(Right hand over hand)

Understable discs tend to flip quicker while overstable discs take longer to complete the full flip.

Keep in mind that it's all about the angle with overhands for distance, disc selection as well y'alls, but angle more importantly. Know how the disc you choose to overhand flips when thrown overhand, then it's all about the angle.

Overhands can be thrown high for over tree shots, up and out with more overstable discs for distance (40-45 degrees out -- 1:30 - 2:00 o'clock), or -- for what they call pancake 'round these parts -- thrown them str8 out, landing the disc on it's back for spectacular slide.

I typically keep my overhand shots limited to my finesse/touch game. 250 ft. on in to the pin. "Get out of trouble" shots, if you will.

And I must say Mr. KUKE....you're missing out on a lot of amazing courses on this side of Fort Worth.

(going by what your DGCR profile sais, of course)

*but I have seen very understable/worn-in discs complete the flip to flip back to flat and glide out. just to add to what I said above.

Understable discs tend to be a little easier to aim for accurate short shots, overstables are easier to get distance out of. It seems to be a personal thing if thumbers or tomahawks go farther for you, give them both a try and see what works.

Thanks Tx. I'm going to play Turner Park this morning and hole 7 hates me. I want to overhand it over the trees and land on the hill just past the pin. Next time I'm in town I'll try to hit some more courses on this side of town. I plan to hit up Veterans Park and Z-Boaz.

I like overstable for Thumber discs.

KC Pro Banshee is my favorite for accuracy & consistency.
Firebird is also nice and a little longer.
For pure Thumber distance a Whippet is hard to beat.

A light Teebird is the most popular disc for OH around here.

Whippet or Whippet X?

I just might have to see what my Whippet can do on my regular thumber hole.

If I throw a tomahawk the disc flies straight up and down, lands, rolls a mile (usually at an angle I don't want).

If I throw a thumber the disc will helix and usually land on its top and slide.

Why doesn't the tommy work?

+1?

Your tommy might have been released too far straight up... never did flip.

You're obviously hitting 9000 posts in a few minutes. Lemme be the first to congrat you, Bill. Congratz! :)

i can never get a thumber to fly for me. It's a strange grip. How exactly do you hold a thumber?

It just feels weird, thumb on inside rim? The disc doesn't seem to rest in a natural position

Similar issue here. When I do get it right, it hurts me thumb.

I don't throw either hard because I don't want to hurt my shoulder.

Thanks for the tips guys. I need to compensate more for the flip next time and I might ace the hole. It landed about 15' to the right but it still left me a nice chance to birdie.

I have a pretty good tomahawk that does it's little flip and lands, similar to the "pancake" that was described above. When it lands on edge and does that little spin and takes off, it means too much snap on the disc. I try to throw my shorter range pancake shots with a lot of arm and not too much snap. I also throw it a lot like a baseball pitch, about head level. Now that my snap has developed it is harder to do.

by the way, this is the best tomahawk/thumber video out there I've seen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7ZQbxrr1v8

Now lookit here son, you are throwing a FH anny roller instead of a tommy. You have to release at an angle with the top side of the disc past vertical for an overhand throw to work its magic, i.e angle \ for righty tommy, and angle / for thumber.

I just might have to see what my Whippet can do on my regular thumber hole.

Whippet is one of my favorite overhand discs. Have a CFR Glow and a Star...Both Whippet-X...only way to go.

Okay hole 7. For RHOverHand. When It's on the left side, Throw a Tomo, when it's on the right, Throw a Thumber. That's up the gut shots to risky. A good overhand there will park you everytime (unless the Disc Golf Gods suggest a nasty roll)

I've hit the basket in the past and rolled all the way back down the hill.

If you are RHBH dominant the thumber is a very useful shot to learn. It finished right instead of left like your normal shots. It can bail you out trouble and keep you safe in a lot of situations.

I love tomahawks and thumbers in moderately wooded holes, especially when the leaves have fallen. They are both great for accurate throws depending on what is in front of you. Great shots to practice and learn if you haven't mastered them yet.
