Whats the skinny on getting a course built? I know we have a lot of Sherman members on here.

Perfect sized town, great parks, college town, and what are we missing?

Go to PDGA.com and look under courses/resources

One of the best courses I've played in TX is very close to Sherman. Private course though.

I have given information to a couple of the park and rec board members. Supposedly it is part of Phase 2 of the new park they are putting in near FM1417 and 82. I'm a little nervous since they haven't asked about course design. I'm trying get in touch with one of the baord members to get the lastest info. When I get more info I will post it.

We need to do whatever we can to make sure they don't just throw baskets in the park. I'm afraid they will take our good idea and cheese it out.

Phase 2? How many phases 92 lol...

Plus it's a great name. Also was my Xbox live tag when I was playing.

Disc you seem to have a pretty good grasp on things going on with the city, but I was curious to know if it would be beneficial to maybe have all the Sherman and surrounding area DGers meet up somewhere and discuss this subject or anything else?

Great idea!

This is the email that I received from the Recreation Coordinator (Al Penn-White) for Sherman. Now how is it that we have a Rec Coordinator but zero DG courses?

Well anywho this is what he said.

Wes,

I have looked into the possibility of having a Disc-Golf course – We (City of Sherman ) are trying to expand our sports activities and this one is on our list.

I am going to Mesquite hopefully within next few weeks and look at their program.

Thank you for your interest…………

Al

So my guess is, if we really encourage him and show some major support... we can make this happen. How about, everyone shoot him an email letting him know how supportive we are of him and his work. Then let him know we are here to help and want to see this through. Nothing rude are obnoxious. Just show our support and eagerness. Maybe then we can push him harder to see this DG course happen. If sees enough interest, he might start it faster.

Does anyone else have a portable basket by chance? I though it may be a good way to play and be beneficial (if we get a course) to take them out to the proposed site or other parks and play/design a preliminary course. This might also drum up interest from other park users.

I am down for meeting up and helping out. Thursdays are great for me and it may be good to inform Mr. Penn-White that others could be joining the meeting to offer suggestions. Apparently from what I have heard from Disc, is that there is a new park going in at 1417 and 82 and i think that is a proposed site. Just driving past the area looks pretty nice.

I agree that we should get together and discuss ideas. My son has a track meet Thursday so I can't make it to Town Lake. I did meet Meat tonight at the Alex Clark mini. I'm glad you got some response from Mr. Penn-White. I sent him info several months ago and he said he would review it but never replied back. I have given the same infomation to Shane Best and he said the board liked it. He told me it was part of Phase 2 so maybe he is stringing me along. Since I work for the same company as he I will pay him a visit and find out. Of course I will be nice about it.

I will be at Towne Lake Friday afternoon and plan on playing the mini at 6. If you can make it let me know. I will have my 2 sons with me.

I will send Mr. Penn-White another e-mail just to show more interest.

I talked to Ron Silliman (CCDISCGOLF) last night at the mini and he is more than happy to come up and do some consultation and meet with the city with us. Ron has a lot of experience with these kind of things and is always giving back to the community and would be a HUGE help to us. Ron is the designer of Towne Lake in Mckinney--One of the best courses in North Texas.

No real news here. I will be out of town this week so would anybody like to take my place for the meeting?

Also told him about multiple tees and basket locations.

Is there a meeting scheduled?

The board member I'm talking with didn't give me any new information. But he told a friend of mine that he would be happy with getting just 6 baskets. In my opinion that will be a waste of time. I don't think putting in an 18 basket disc golf course will bust the budget. It will get used more than most things the city installs. I feel like I'm getting the run around.

I sent the same info to Al Pen-White last August and never heard anything back from him. So last week I replied to my e-mail asking him if he had reviewed the info and he said he did. He also told me he was going to Mesquite and he was going to Rockwall for the World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend so maybe he will see what a good course can do for Sherman.

We will see.

Sorry. I was out of the country.

I'm back and responding... they are intending to place this in the Phase II of the complex. Did I mention before that part of the set back originally was the death of our previous P&R Director? I'm working on the new one but I plan to use your subsequent email and forward to the new Director as well as the City Manager and Mayor since this is getting absolutely no traction, in my opinion.

Wish I could make it but I can’t get away from work this morning.

18 basket course with multiple tee’s and multiple basket locations. Concrete tee’s with appropriate dimensions. I like the way Towne Lake is setup.

I had originally given Shane a layout of Fairview Park but since then I really feel that Fairview Park has too much traffic. They did extend the walking path to the other side of the creek so maybe there is more room. If Pecan Grove has enough land then that might be a good location. Especially since the park is in its developing stage.

See if the city would be willing to hire a designer. If not I believe Meast said that Ron would be willing to help. I think he did a great job with Towne Lake.

If the city absolutely can’t do anything then maybe they could purchase a few baskets and place them at Herman Baker or in the Park on Hiway 11. I really hate suggesting that since I feel Sherman should be able to install a course.

If you guy’s are up for it lets start a club. I already have the web site. As a club we could help with the installation such as cleanup, remove debris. Once the course is in we could help keep it clean and promote disc golf to gain interest. Just a thought.

Good luck and I wish I could join you. Remember that $20,000 sounds like a lot of money to us but it is just a very small piece of the city budget.

Yes all good news and very positive stuff.

We are looking good! Plans at Pecan Grove by end of summer.

He wants us to help design it. Hiring a contractor was never really an option for them. Looks like 15 - 18 baskets(depending on room), concrete tee pads and multi pen locations.

I agree about starting a club!

I know you said you got a site, but I also can make any kind of website from scratch along with logos. Lets get it stated who wants to be the fearless leader? Who has time and really want to head this out?

The best way to start all this may just be to meet a Pecan Grove, I can bring my portable basket and just set it up and play some and see what we come up with and maybe invite the parks people come out with us and play. This way they will be able to talk with us about the course ideas and they will be able to play as well.

Sherman being so close to the Oklahoma border, you may want to use the tourism angle. Tell him that the Oklahoma golfers would probably frequent it as well. He would please the locals and increase local business with out of town/state players. That should give them some insentive to not only build a course, but to build a course that will attract out of area players. I'm going to play Lewisville this weekend because it's fairly close and looks fun. Just a brainstorm

Have you guys thought about doing some type of object course? Bury (no concrete) some 4x4 posts w/ 4' exposed for the goal w/ some 1' exposed for the tee. paint them up nice w/ the hole numbers on both. Or you could get ambitious and buy the poles for baskets at $35 each and cement them in to be ready for baskets and chain hangers later. If you could just get them to give you some land to use it would be a good start. Get some type of local interest. A weekly mini with a few dollars going to the club to buy more/better equipment. With some type of start you may even be able to get sponsorship from local businesses. I know "Big Jim" from Oklahoma and his family drive to McKinney to play like many of you must do.

The sad part is. You have one of the best courses in Texas in your area. It is private though. I think they have another 2 they set up on a temporary basis on private land.

Hey again.
I wonder if we could/should form a Texoma Disc Golf Club-- through which we could have mini's, raise some money, buy some equipment, etc? And here's another thought-- at Hawn (or, "Haun") Park, on Dewey Ave. (Hwy 11) in Sherman, there appears to be LOTS of unused land that could possibly support a DG course. In this area of town, more "clean" fun might be welcomed. There's a skate park, a (long) paved walking/running trail, a water squirt park, playground, pavillion... just need some objects for now, progressing to baskets, maybe?? I'm telling you-- LOTS of WIDE OPEN LAND here-- perhaps a course that would provide some variety for us, considering McKinney has lots of good trees/obstacles on many fairways. I've played Riverside in Tulsa/Jenks, OK, and the layout could possibly be similar here at Hawn (Haun) Park. Let me know what you think. I'm a physical therapist here in Sherman, live in Trenton, and have a young family-- pretty busy is what I'm trying to say, like we all are. But I'd sure like to do what I can to help support DG in the Texoma area!! Thanks.

What course is that Giles and where is it?

Sorry for the tease. I'm not really at liberty to say. I have played it by invite before but the owner isn't a close friend so I don't know if I can give out that info.

He has tournaments some times, so next time I hear about one I'll find out if I can give out the info.

If you guys get anything going in that area I'm sure he will find out and possibly be a part of it. He would be a good guy to get involved in design.

Nope, talk about total fall out by the city of Sherman. I have emailed several parks and rec members with no reply.

Wow...I really wish Sherman had a course. I go there weekly and would play it almost every time I was there. I'd possibly be down for a mini if that helped build the interest, and ultimately get a course built.

And I often buy my discs from the Academy there in Sherman.
