View Full Version : Speed 10+ that beat in well

Im looking to flirt with some faster drivers, mostly for field work and trying to learn to throw nose down a little, but I dont think I want any more than 1 mold that fast and I would like field work to also be getting them into the famous stages of wear and to cover a wide spectrum as it beats up. Then, maybe when I am ready to use them on the course they'll already be in stages.

Any suggestions on discs that start off stable to overstable in DX, D, X, or Pro plastic or equivalent that really perform well from new to beat covering a wide spectrum of stabilities?

Was thinking maybe a Pro Wraith or dare I venture into the Pro Destroyers or X Nukes? A bitt too fast for me but I just want to explore and work them in the field.

I would say orc but that's not quite fast enough I think. My vote is for wraith or maybe starfire. Pro Starfire (SL) is a great disc.

The only Destroyer I had for a while was a bottom stamped Echo-Star and it was stable to overstable. I could only use it for flicks and it would NEVER turn for me. Now that I'm stronger and a bit more in tune with my game, I've noticed that it will turn over. My guess is that all the beating it took when I was more n00bish caused it to lose some stability. At this point I have a brand new one in the bag that I use for harsher turns. And to add to that, I've heard (and seen) Pro Destroyers prove well for backhand distance drives. Heck, a guy tossed one 494ft in a distance competition at our Ace Race and bested my best ever 434ft flick.

So, to me, the Destroyers are at least worth a shot :)

Wraith or destroyer, or if you want to go ultra fast get a nuke :)

Orc would probably be ok, but I really want one thats going to be my end all goal to be able to eventually throw; and still only throw it when the distance gets well beyond my River and Preds reach even when I can throw it; still want to do most of my work with my controlled drivers.

Pro Wraith is a good candidate. Or P-PD.

Pro-like plastic would be good to experiment with wear stages and weight ranges.

Orc
Wraith
Destroyer

In that order. The Orc will be the one you'll be ready to throw first, etc.

You probably could throw an Avenger SS brand new, but they beat in to unusable quickly in Pro D plastic.

I have a P PD that might be a candidate, but I sort of seeing it not being much longer than my Valks, if at all; which are not much longer than my Rivers to where I opt that the sacrifice of control is not worth the extra distance.

My first thought was Pro Wraith. It's a great disc. Plenty fast. They fly dead straight for me with a little fade at the end and as they beat-in they can become flippy - fading right and never coming back. Pro Destroyers fly similarly for me but a tad more overstable. I never liked either in DX. Pro has a nice feel and good glide. Got some Champ as well, they'll hold their stability longer but I seem to throw Pro the best.

Pro/X is my first choice but I would also like at least one of my discs to be available in DX/D to throw over water without fear since its so cheap.

Dx Destroyers start out stable to overstable, more stable than Pro discs, which are more glidey out of the box. They take longer to break in than the Star models, so if you start with three or four, you could get an extremely wide range of stablity with them, from overstable to hyzer flippy with different stages of wear.

This is getting very tempting. It will probably be rediculously out of my league at first, but I plan a ton more field work this year now that I've found a field that I can use more regularly. I should get a lot more reps than I've ever had in just a couple of months.

Also have started a new workout routine. Basically trying to trim down and not bulk which may or may not help. Heres hoping I stay at it all year.

Hmm Wraith and Destroyers in pro and DX Plastic seem to be front runners. Probably could FH them for a while also since Im about 50-100' shorter on FH with the same lines (in reverse) as BH.

Since they are all Pro plastic, I decided to start with a Pro Wraith and Destroyer and an X Nuke just to try. Should have it figured out by the time Im ready to put one in my bag.

Wraiths and Destroyers are great stable to slightly overstable discs brand new. I really like Wraiths in all plastics with the exception of Champion - I felt that all other types had more glide - especially DX, E*, and (if you can find one) Special Blend. I haven't really messed with Champ Destroyers, but DX, Pro and Star are all $$ - especially the Protos. I have thrown a few freakishly overstable ones that all weighed 169g...

I would stick to the pro plastic. Dx just wears to quick to be a viable driver in your bag for any extended period of time.

Pro Destroyers and wraiths are great discs.

Pro Wraith. Definately a good start. Beats up a little quicker and isn't as beefy right out of the box as wraiths in champ plastic or star.

pro wraiths are one of my favorite drivers. they break in nicely and have some wicked glide

Pro wraith gets my vote, after a couple hits they will start bombing for u. Get a domey one, i thought it heald the sweetspot a lil longer and got hella glide

Keep working with the P-PD. PD's are like a baseball gloves gotta break 'em in before they're any good. Also by carrying multiple PDs in different stages of wear and different plastics you can cover a wide variety of shots with only one mold.

I know that starfires don't fit your requirements but the pro starfire, SL mold, is a great disc with lots of glide. I have a lighter weight star starfire and find it to fly only slightly more overstable than the pro.

does it have to be speed 10? cause the gold line strikers can break in nicely

Pro Destroyer, if you want stable to overstable and feel you dont have the arm for these yet then GET IT!. All its gonna do is fade hard for you untill you get it up to speed but you are still gonna get some big D out of it.

Pro/* Destroyers. Wraiths are great, but even brand new, aren't able to handle overstable duties.

Well; the only reason I wanted speed 10+ is I want the disc to be dramatically faster than what I throw for control discs. Partially due to wanting to still heavily rely on the control discs for the most part and keep pushing those even when I can throw the faster discs; and also for it to be a goal to work toward out in the field.

I can throw some speed 10s and 9s, like the Pro Valks I have now and the P PD I also have but it seems like Im either looking for just a hole a little more open to throw it, but then still opting to throw my River or Pred anyway willing to sacrifice the extra D for that control.

My DX Destroyer beat in fairly quickly from overstable to understable, and my Pro Destroyer beat in quickly enough from overstable to stable. I lost the latter, and the former is starting to get less stable than I want. I may try it out as a long range turnover driver.

For contrast, my Star Boss has taken a coon's age to beat from overstable to more or less stable. Though I admit I don't throw it very much.

Also my ESP Nuke is so flippy it's difficult to use. It beat in a hurry from understable to flippy. Next time I'm buying a Katana.

You like the River, have you tried a Flow?

No, havent tried one yet. Figured I'd go a different route for the fast drivers by trying stages of ware and Im not sure the Flow would quite fit given its understability and only available in premium plastic. Might be a good option to look at if I dont like how this idea I have goes.

Well I can tell you that you'll get some noticeable differences in flight with GL vs Opto. My GL's are lighter and flippy but the opto's are max weight and very stable for me. I just got some to try because like you I've been keeping below speed seven until these came out. If you decide to look into them read all of Discspeeds write ups in "the flow" thread if you haven't already.

Heh, after you mentioned it, I went and read through the thread. Sounds like it might be a good idea to check 1 out. Probably will my next order.

I have a DX Beast and Wraith (actually lost this) that are beat in pretty gnarly but hyzer flip for some sick distance... my longest throw to date (about 390) was with the Beast

Another vote for the Pro Wraith here. Pro Destroyers may be a little too much for your distance/potential distance from the sounds of it and it will turn out to be more of a meat-hook disc than a distance driver. The Pro Wraith has tons of glide and can get good distance for a wide range of skill levels. It's not going to be a great headwind disc though.
