View Full Version : Tournament Idea.... a challenge to the PGA

How about a head to head ball/disc matchup of the best of both sports. 18 holes of ball golf, 18 holes of disc. Lowest score wins it all.

Here's my fantasy line-up:

Ken Klimo
Nate Doss
Niko Lecastro
Feldburg

v.s.

VJ Sighn
Tiger Woods
Phil Michelson
Jim Fuyrk

Attract some big time sponsors, a tv network and bam!

Now let's make it happen!

What if you added a top senior player (masters or grandmasters for us, whatever is equivalent for them) and one or two top female players from each side too? Make it even better tv.

I guess I need to explain that the tournament would take place at a location that has a championship ball and disc golf course in close proximity. A good place would be Laurel Hill/Giles Run in Lorton Virginia- a 18 hole RTJ course within eyesight of one of the toughest courses you'll ever play.

How bout this idea...when the golfers are teeing off with balls, our guys can throw discs at them, and vice-versa :)

What's your best score pro to pro at Giles? Just curious, I think Ian H. has it at 55.

I've only played there once for the tourney last year. Hovey won Open and beat me by a dozen. He beat me by 11 on the longs and only one stroke on short to long. I finished 6th in Open. He's 27 years younger than me.

Kid's a talent, though isn't he? I played with him one time, just a casual round at Burke Lake.

Whatever floats your boat, dude. Knowing what I do about Ian, I think you're awfully disrespectful. Talking **** about someone who beat you by a dozen strokes...that takes some moxie.

He's really a friend and we give each other a hard time all the time. I made him admit he had a man crush on me because he couldn't beat me. Finally he said he did and he has crushed me ever since.

Naw, I usually just go after my errant throws. I think I'm running a positive plastic balance from the briars, but I'm too damn honest. Funny you mention Larry... the last time I played there, I found one of his off hole 17, and gave it back to him.

I know a few guys who'll come out with bats or retrievers on hunting trips...I just hope they do the right thing and call the people whose plastic they find.

Sorry, my original post was a bit unclear- that's exactly the idea, each player will have a round of both sports and combined scores would determine the winner. Would be interesting to see if Woods or Michelson could throw some plastic, or would a pro discer with a decent golf game take it?

Would love to see a match-play challenge as well.

I like the idea, it would definitely raise the profile of professional disc golf. Don't know if any ball golfers would go for it though, but it'd be something cool if the PDGA would pursue it.

And as far as the lineups, go with four players who play both sports and play at least one of them at a professional level. Brad Hammock comes to mind; he's won the PDGA Worlds in the Masters division and is also a very good ball golfer. Then I can't remember the name, but there is also a PGA touring pro who recently took up disc golf. We need those types of people on board. I also like the idea of having a senior and female player of the team (maybe even a collegiate player ).

Throw enough $$$ their way, and they'd do it. Unfortunately PDGA doesn't have the sponsorship muscle to get the big bucks, but maybe the PGA would throw us a bone.

Bubba Watson plays both sports. I have been thinking about trying to get some people to casually play a couple of rounds like this, one golf and one disc golf.

We should have a team of baseball players vs a team of football players. They would each play their own sport and whoever does best would win.

Im pretty sure if you threw me in I would help whichever team I was on out because I am decent at disc golf (915) and a low digit handicap golfer (4).

I think if you did this you should have Bubba Watson who is a PDGA member and then find a disc golfer who is a good golfer too . . . I have not heard of any disc golfers being good golfers.

Let's get back on topic...does anyone else like the idea, and who would you think would take it- a baller or a discer?

unfortunately i think that the baller has the distinct advantage here. i think we can all be honest that ball golf at it's core is far more complex and difficult than disc golf. just in the very beginning phases. perfecting both take a long time and a lot of skill, but just hitting a golf ball consistently is a pain in the ass...throwing a frisbee is something everyone has a basic idea of how to do since the age of about five. throwing a disc is based on this principle (before anyone kills me on this, i know it's different.), so i think that it would be easier for a person to pick up disc golf faster.

Dave Steger used to run an event like this at Pohick bay called Golf, Golf, Golf. (Putt-Putt included)
The ball golfers usually took it for the reasons mentioned by douglat2 in the previous post.

I have seen weight lifting and running challenges where you have to run a mile and every second under 10:00 minutes counts as XX ounces off. and in another format every pound you lift takes off X.X seconds off of your mile time.

This is fun idea for a local tournament, but I wouldn't care to see Tiger pick up a Teebird, or Climo try to chip his way out of a sand trap. As far as I'm concerned, any type of golf makes for a lousy spectator sport.

There have been ball golf/disc golf challenges every few years since the mid-90s where players play their own sport on a ball golf course that has some special tees and temp baskets added. The matches have been surprisingly competitive with DG and BG players each winning sometimes, rarely by more than a few shots.

I host an electronic Trigolfalon on Super Bowl Sunday afternoon each year with some of my geezer buddies where we play computerized disc golf (Innova or TW version), ball golf (TW) and minigolf. I want to do it outdoors sometime but just haven't gotten it together yet.

They did an ace race/CTP in Macon (I believe) with golf and disc on a short golf par 3, apparently it was a huge downhill onto an island.

One of our local pros got 3rd I think.

We have done this before, it wasn't a tournament but it was a bachelor party with some friends. Some who were ball golfers, and some who were disc golfers.

The baskets are tucked away nicely to give disc golfers there own set of challenges and the course isn't nearly as long as what the ball golfers played. Scores were really close with the disc golfers winning by a few.

We played here, it was a blast. Old English Golf Course (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2741) Dave Greenwell designed it a few years ago, we played sand traps and across cart paths OB. I took my fair shares of OB. Each sports offers different challenges. Of course a 25' putt in golf is much tougher than a 25' putt in DG.

Climo took a drop in 3 on his hole from the blacks.. he threw a wraith about 450' and then rolled one up under the basket. Rollers on a golf course are just sick. And its definitely the signature hole at about 1200' from the blacks. Hole 7 (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/2741/afcaff3b_t.jpg)

Not to be a nay sayer but no Pro Golfers would try to play Disc Golf. Not knowing how to throw could easily injure their arms and had a big negative effect on their pro golf careers.

Take a Ball/Disc course that exists and each pro play 18 holes of their respective sport but mash a Disc and Ball player on one doubles team. After the round you combine the Ball score with the Disc score to determine the winner. Disc'r plays the DGC set par and Baller plays their set par.

I think that would be sick to see Tiger cheering on Climo while Climo cheers on Tiger to make that long putt!
