Hey Jeff and the fella's, I have been a union contractor for several years but have been on layoff for almost 2 years now and just been doing a factory maintenence job to get by. There's night golf at Bandemer Park in Ann Arbor quite frequently. Baskets get lit up with glowsticks. Probably a reasonable distance to get in a couple rounds.
As to the Saugatuck event, I'm actually heading to the Kzoo area for disc golf that very weekend, but aside from hitting the new Air Zoo course we hadn't actually figured out what we were playing. Most of the golf was planned for Saturday, but we'll be getting in at least one round on Friday.

you could play a few places there... I think the Air Zoo is only 9 holes and it's liek 1 and 2 and then the end of the back nine. but Oshtemo Township Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=502) is a fun one. Robert Morris (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=193) is one a lot of people like but I haven't played myself. Knollwood (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1432) is right in the middle of town and right by "The Den" Which is a party store you can get discs for descent prices and the den pop 42 oz for 82 cents. Cold Brook (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=438) is tight and has a lot of technical stuff, but is also a good place to go, but it may not be open and it does cost 5 bucks to park there. Hope this helps out what you're looking to do.

Jabanger
01-13-2011, 08:56 PM
I can bring a broom but may need a reminder a day or two before. I have a wicker broom I use for sweeping the snow off my balcony that will work well if the snow isn't too deep.
Jukeshoe
01-13-2011, 09:27 PM
Don't bother with the broom/shovel stuff. I ALWAYS have a shovel with me in my car's trunk, so I'll be the point man on that. No need for others to lug extra stuff out.

I haven't used ribbons ever yet. Anybody planning on them for the 4th? We have about 2-4in around here, so I don't know if I'll have to use 'em at Brewer for the ice bowl Saturday. Probably gonna go check out the course today.
I think I have a good idea of how to use them from info on here (yes, I searched and read instead of asking!). Good tape, plastic ribbon and not nylon, closest to center of disc as possible.....sound about right?

01-16-2011, 02:04 PM
After yesterdays ice bowl at Brewer, I'm going with strings/ribbons from now on. There was 4-6in of snow and way too much time spent looking. Spotters helped tremendously. Out of about 70 people, I think I saw about 10 yarnies. I'm thinkin they're the smart ones.
Shore Acres could be dreadful w/o strings, especially the holes that play into that huge open area in the middle of the park.
apdrvya
01-16-2011, 02:31 PM
heh! spotters for sure on that hole...

how long were the ribbons used on the discs i want to use that for the round as well just not sure how long to make them. don't want them too long but don't want them too short where they get buried in the snow as well. I was already planning on bringing a sled especially for the 14th hole. the guys i work with were laughing saying i would use the sled to try and slide down the hill and catch the disc before it hits the ground.
E-man
01-16-2011, 03:25 PM
From what I saw, ribbons were b/w 2 and 3 feet long. Personally, I'm going with about 2 and a half to 3ft. Hopefully, that will be long enough to see and short enough to not get wrapped up while throwing.

----------------------------a line of demarcation----------------------
Ribbons shmibbons! :p
Real men know that disc golf is not unlike sex: it's more fun when it's risky! :D;)
I played in around 20 inches (guesstimate) on Friday, and didn't really have many problems. The key is to watch them all the way, and then find the slit in the snow. As long as you don't walk on where the disc entered, they're *usually* easy to find. I've lost waaaaaaaaay more discs in summer or fall than I have in the snow.

Look, I've been one of Cutler's biggest detractors from the day the trade was announced. (Huge Orton fan.)
But all this hate the national media is throwing towards Cutler is retarded. THE MEDICAL STAFF PULLED HIM FROM THE GAME! He went back out to start the 3rd quarter anyways. THEN, THEY PULLED HIM FROM THE GAME AGAIN!!!!! I don't see why there is such a dealio about this, other than the national media's obsession with always piling onto the Chicago teams (there is a bias, if you think there isn't you either don't watch sports, or you're blind).
So there :p.

I'm planning on bringing some sand tomorrow (pretty sure most teepads there are new from this summer, so salt could be bad on them).
We can try to clear as much as possible, but this (http://www.wzzm13.com/weather/wx_forecast.aspx?storyid=116606&catid=219) sounds like it's going to erase anything we do. :\

Was out at the course today with E-Man. The tee pads are heavily compacted with snow didnt want to try and shovel them in case i might somehow damage the pad. Snow is about a foot deep in places. most of the snow is crusted over with firm layer. it was even firm enough for us to get some skips off the snow. we actually found a disc on hole #13. we were able to get a few pars. E-man even birdied hole 10. course is playable 14 basket got moved back about 150 feet so now sits at tree line at very back. not just on other side of pond. did take one photo of tee pad. the photo is of the tee pad and view of hole 1.
rshrevo
01-31-2011, 06:38 PM
Oh one other thing Hole 4 is very dangerous coming down. i fell on the way down and almost wanted to litterly slide the rest of the way down on my butt it was hard getting a good footing trying to go down the hill safely. plus with the snowpack some of the tees are really slick so you need to be careful trying to throw from them.

Like rshrevo said, the teepads are pretty much non-existent. With 10-15 inches of new snow it shouldn't matter anyways. Can't wait to see some killer snow drifts! I threw with ribbons for my 1st time yesterday and it wasn't as bad as I though it was gonna be. The discs seemed to fly ok w/ them. And the duct tape held even after all the trees I hit :wall:.
But I used the gift-wrap type ribbons, and they sometimes would curl up in a ball under the disc so they didn't matter anyways. Thinkin maybe a flat ribbon will work better and not curl up.

I am driving a 2010 white Chevy Malibu. I also bought some Yaktrax walker device to help with walking on the ice and snow covered tee pads. I bought them at Dunhams sports
here is a web page about them. i thought they might help with the tee pads we will be experiencing tommorrow for better traction when throwing.

Excellent I have wanted to see those in action. I think the pro's might be a better option though because they go over the foot. The walker's seem like they could pull off during any twisting or toe drag.

I'm out for tomorrow, guys. My check engine light came on last night on the way home from work. Ends up I've got two bad oxygen sensors, and the shop couldn't get me in this morning because of a backup of work because of the snowstorm. I attempted to borrow someone's car, but it's a no go.
So unless someone is swinging through the LaPorte area on their way to Shore Acres (extremely doubful, but one can have hope...Peebz???), I'm going to have to bow out.
Damn. :( :(

I appreciate the offer very much Jeff, but I don't want to drive it anywhere at the moment. Apparently driving without the oxygen sensors can ruin the catalytic converter. :\ The first thing I did when I got into work was to see if it was safe to drive it without the sensors working, and it seems dicey. Last thing I want is to ruin something else.
There's still a very small possibility I can borrow a car from a family member, but I'm not going to hold my breath. If I can make it any way tomorrow, I'll be there. :\

No friggin' doubt. :wall:
I took my car to Advanced Auto Parts for a diagnostics check (because I've had the check engine light come on before and it was only a loose gas cap). I got the price on the engine sensors then called the auto shop. They wanted to charge me about double for the parts if they bought them. Then they said they couldn't even get me in. :wall:
It hasn't been a great morning. :(

I had a oxygen sensor go out in my neon when i had one. there were times i could stop at a stop sign start up and go 60 MPH no problem. then I would stop again when i started back up with the pedal all the way to the floor i was only able to get to 6 MPH. It really sucked until i was able to get it fixed. I never knew when i would be able to accelerate or not.

So far my car has run pretty okay (it is idling a bit rough). But both sensors are out. I just don't want to run the risk of furthering the damage (i.e., destroying the catalytic convertor). Also, your story of 6 mph makes me want to risk it even less. :\

4ft drifts...30+ mph wind gusts...:gross:.
When I got back to GR and sat around for awhile, it got nice (28 degrees, 10-15mph wind, sunny) so I decided to go to Brewer w/ my shovel. I played all 9 of white and cleared every pad to the concrete. It was like another world, pretty sweet.

Ooofa!
Thanks for getting together and putting yourselves through that, gentlemen! :gross:
Worst conditions (hands down) I've ever played in. At one point the snow got so deep I actually got stuck. I had to dig myself out. :\
Stupid wind wasn't making things easy, either. Every throw was being blown around mercilessly, so it wasn't even like we were making quality shots. Trudging through snow that at times was to my waist (and I'm 6' tall and long-legged) while zig zagging from bad shot to bad shot is NOT the best of times for dg.
But it was still epic fun. A few pics forthcoming...
