View Full Version : Added # of baskets

I've gotten emails in the past (and recently) regarding the # of holes = # of baskets rule. I just added a new field to each course showing the # of baskets which is separate from the # of holes. This way if a course has 18 distinct (keyword!) tees, it can be marked as such. If a course has 9 holes, each having a long tee and a short tee, that is not 18 holes. That's 9 holes with multiple tees.

I went through and updated around 30 or so courses that had "make 18" in the description which I think should cover most of the courses where this was required.

On occasion :) Going on vacation is tougher.. I spend 7 or 8 hours away from the site and I come back to a bunch of emails and even more course updates to double-check. It's really the latter that takes up most of the time since I'm a little OCD about making sure things are consistent, spelled correctly, grammar, etc. when it comes to the course pages.

one course still needs update. Hughes park in Hudsonville, Michigan has 9 baskets but 18 completely different tee locations. I have the distances for the front nine listed under the red tees and the distances for the back nine currently listed under the white tees.

Thanks for all that you do.

Thanks, I changed it and updated the hole info.

This is a nice feature. It is hard trying to describe one of my local courses to people because most people assume that it is just a short and a long teepad, but in reality its more like two different holes playing to the same basket. I bet that a lot of "9 hole" courses fall into this category as well.

I noticed that my course was just updated. Nice and quick! Thanks!

Another thought...This now means that the course wouldn't have multiple tees. I will change that on the Course Details.

Well yours have distinct numbers. Just having a long and a short pad doesn't qualify as 18 holes.

Yeah, I get what you are saying.

Because the course has 18 holes, there aren't multiple tees for each hole now. When it had to be considered a 9 hole course, it had multiple tees because there were two playing to each basket. I hope that makes sense. If I'm wrong correct me.

That's totally correct. I just didn't want people getting the wrong idea. I actually corrected a bunch of courses today while I was making changes where they had "dual tees make 18" in the description but in fact it was just a long and a short tee on each hole.

Example: Phantom Falls using their signature basket for more than one hole.

^The above has 9 baskets and 18 distinct holes. Example: The first hole has 2 #'s on it (1 and 18) with tee locations from completely different locations. This course probably needs to be updated to fit the new system.

Thanks!

Hey Tim, Groves Park in Tucson AZ has 9 baskets, but has dual tees forward and backward, so it should be 9 baskets, 18 holes, multiple tees.

Crazy feature! How will the courses show up on the map? Will a course with 9 baskets and 18 tees still be orange and such?

Or Keller Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1415) in Deerfield, which has only 8 baskets (#3 and #9 are shared); is that still considered a 9 hole course?

The map will go by the "hole count" for now. I will most likely add a filter later for # of baskets. I did this mostly for scoring purposes and to reflect how a course is actually played by locals.

I'm guessing this would also apply, but in the other direction, for courses that have multiple baskets (short/long) per hole, such as Hornet's Nest, Renny, Reedy Creek, and the like?

Also, how, if at all, should a practice basket figure into the mix?

Good question, along those same lines is Brickyard in Menomonie WI, dual tees and dual baskets on each hole. I'd call it a 9 hole course with 18 baskets and multiple tees.

Here is the information I've added to the page where people add courses:

Note I: A set of long tees & short tees on 9 holes does NOT equal 18 holes. Tees must be DISTINCTLY marked with different hole numbers.

Note II: The # of baskets below is excluding extra/practice baskets. Only count baskets in use by the course. 99% of the time # of holes and baskets is the same.

I wouldn't doubt it. I noticed that you changed some of the captions for some course photos that I uploaded. For the better. I, for one, really appreciate it and I'm sure everyone else on here does as well. Thanks!

Interesting. Sounds like it will only affect a smaller % of courses, but still a good clarification. Thanks.
