Gastonia, NC is going to have another disc golf course. We're hoping to have it in the ground by the end of March or the first part of April.

The new course will be a Bradley Center (http://www.cityofgastonia.com/city_serv/parks/bradley/bradley.cfm), at 1200 North Modena Street, not too far from Rankin Lake.

Here's a rough, tentative course map. There are lots of lines on here from multiple GPS tracking attempts. It's gonna be tight, wooded, and hilly, but not too long. We're hoping for 27 holes, but the parks department may only go for 18. Preparations are being made for any eventuality.

It's kind of a good news/bad new thing. Rankin Lake is going to be temporarily closed (for 6 months, we're told) sometime this spring, and we want to have the Funky Cold Modena up and running by that time. I'll post more details as they become known.

Good news and bad news but still awesome. I assume this is part of what you were working on while I was around at Thanksgiving?

We walked the working layout today with Stan McDaniel, and he had a lot of good things to say, and even more good ideas, and answered a lot of questions. It was a good day. We also got a bit more clearing done on what will be hole 2.

Do you shoot from the info to the Yen?

;)

Sounds great, sucks that rankin is closing, hopefully it is short term.

Yes, and from play to pause, on the front 8.

Here's an updated course map. The blue holes, as well as the five around the tennis courts, are the "extra" holes, if they're willing to go to 27 holes. The squares on one end of the line represent the tees, and the round dots, the baskets.

That looks like it's gonna be a great course bj. When is the estimated time of arrival, say they only do the 18? Just curious....

We're hoping to be playing it by the end of March. Most of the first 8 is playable now, with temp baskets. The stuff in the back, not so much. That's gonna be a lot of cutting.

I got the word today, we're doing a final walkthrough on Wednesday Feb. 2 at 2pm. Then it will be on like Donkey Kong.

The final walkthrough went like a dream, and we started doing some of the light cutting today. The parks dept. is going to start cutting out any bigger stuff on Tuesday, and running the cut stuff through a chipper. It's going to be a busy weekend getting ready for them to come in and cut.

I would like to try and volunteer down there some time BJ but I am focused on Bradford as for right now. That's cool that we are seein' another course for that side of the Charlotte area though.

Short notice, but to anyone in the area, but we're gonna be out there working all day tomorrow, and probably Sunday too. We might have something playable with temp baskets (or at least objects) by next weekend.

How is this course comin' along bro? Details please....

Course progress... today was a great day. Parks & Rec. had two crews out with chainsaws cutting. They're coming back tomorrow, and they're bringing a chipper to run all the cut trees through instead of us having to drag all the stuff off. Most of the fairways are cut and throwable, albeit with a lot of downed trees in the way in places. If all goes as planned, we'll be able to play it with temp baskets this weekend.

Currently, there's a few stumps that need to be cut down on holes 13 & 16. About half of holes 3 & 11 are cut, and hole 4 has barely been touched. Hole 5 has about 5 trees that need to come down. Holes 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are done, except for maybe a minor amount of clean up.

Attached are a couple of pics, one of hole 14's tee from about 100' up the fairway, and another looking the opposite direction, up 14's fairway. This hole's gonna be a beast.

An update: pretty much all the fairways are cut, and there is a little bit of dragging of cut stuff left to do. The sleeves (for the baskets) are likely going to be planted for the front 9 today, and the back nine next week. The current plan is to bring the baskets over from Rankin when it gets shut down (at the end of march/first of April) for the park renovation project, and then to get new baskets for Rankin when it re-opens in the fall.

I added some pics of the steps we built to get up the hill after the tee shot on hole 14 to my photo album (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/album.php?albumid=1333). I would have just posted them, but they're pretty big.

Things are coming along nicely.

Thanks for the round at the Nest yesterday, Jack. Can't wait to come back to NC and play this one (and rankin) when it's finished. Keep wielding that firemans tool with conviction and malice... That dirt don't stand a chance!

You mean I don't have "big muscles" already?

It was good times yesterday guys. We gotta do it again. How did the rest of your day go?

We all got kinda cranky and fed up with double-dog-legs.... Then, getting stuck behind two groups at Eastway playing worse shot put us over the edge.

winning Hornet's Nest was definately the highlight of my day!

All 18 sleeves are planted, steps have now been built on holes 12 (lots)& 13 (just a few), and all but one of the mulch piles have been spread out. The main thing we're waiting on now is the baskets, and she'll be ready to play.

A quick update: the baskets are going in next week. The earlier plan was to move the baskets over from Rankin, but new baskets have been purchased, and they're gonna be put in the ground some time next week. Rankin will stay open until sometime in May, whenever the construction project starts on the park.

I just got word late yesterday that the baskets are supposed to be put in on Friday morning. They've been delayed twice now by crazy weather that the city guys have had to do some clean-up from. Hopefully, we won't have any more thunderstorms tonight, and the baskets will be planted tomorrow.

It is official. Funky Cold On Modena is GO! (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=4466&mode=hi)

It's still really new, but that's just a matter of time. The baskets were installed this morning. Rounds were played this afternoon. Fun was had. There is more to come.

Sounds cool. I'm going to try to go play this and Rankin sometime this coming week, before Rankin gets constructed on. I'll get my brother to bring his fancy camera to take pictures too. Will navigation be hard?

There aren't signs up yet, but it's not a real big place, so you won't get too lost. Also, hole 10 is right beside hole 1. There are posts with hole numbers in place for the back 9 currently, and we should have the front in place in a few days, or maybe even tomorrow. Most of it is very straight forward, with a decent path from the pin to the next tee. One exception is from 1 to 2. To get to hole 2 from 1's pin you just walk back up the road (away from the parking lot) and the tee is marked with two short blocks in the ground. The blocks are painted orange. Holes 7, 8, & 9 are across the park road from hole 6, with 7's tee being back down the hill a little. Currently there are orange flags marking every tee, excepts the previously mentioned hole 2, whose flags keep disappearing.

An update: There are now numbered posts at every tee, and the tees are all marked with white painted bricks. As of yesterday, there was a course map by the first tee. As of a few minutes ago, the course map was added to the course page.

Here's the map, done by our very own R-Intermediate.

Great job on the course, Jack. I played this a couple weeks ago and it was a blast. I think that having another good course in the area will make it more worth it for us Charlotte people to make a day trip to Gastonia.
