View Full Version : DGCR Premium Memberships
I've been working on this for a while now and it's finally ready to be released. DGCR Premium gives you access to cool features that would otherwise be a little too intensive when it comes to calculations and database queries to release on a site-wide scale. Also, people had asked about donating to the site in the past but I was never a big fan of accepting donations without giving anything back. The premium memberships addresses that in a way.
Currently, a premium membership has the following benefits:
Access to real-time charts and graphs of your score stats
Customize those charts & graphs by date to see how you're doing by month (or by week!)
Access hole-by-hole break-downs to see who's scoring birdies and on which holes.
Hole-by-hole break-downs of your own stats with a variety of charts to boot!
Limit your course browsing to only courses you HAVEN'T played on the course and map browsers
Generate custom GPX files for your GPS using the map browser
Access to the Route Map. Going on a road trip? Plug in your start point and destination and see what courses are on the way. You can even add courses as stops and get turn-by-turn directions for the whole trip!
Store up to 200 PM's
Have a snazzy icon by your username on the site and forums (see crown by mine)
I was having a tough time deciding on the price and ended up settling on $25/year. I thought that was pretty fair, it ends up being like $2.08/month so skipping that soda/pop at Wendy's pays for the premium membership for a month. To get a premium membership you can go to your User CP (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/usercp.php) and towards the bottom left you'll see a "Paid Subscriptions" or you can just click here (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/payments.php).
As you can see, a majority of the premium features are currently scorebook related. There are additional premium features features planned for the future but I think there's plenty to be had right now (especially if you're even a moderate user of the scorebook). If nothing else, you can get the warm, fuzzy feeling of helping out the site :D
Also, to eliminate any confusion, the premium membership stuff in no way effects the development of other site features.
If you guys have any questions feel free to PM me or post them here. I've also attached a few screenshots of the new features below.
Click here to upgrade your account to premium (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/payments.php).

Any way you might offer the premium site free for a week or 2 to give everyone a taste of what it will look like, before paying for it? I think more people will be willing to pay once they can experience it first hand.

As Recreation player who plays for pure enjoyment, I don't need the premium service, but I would pay a yearly fee just because I enjoy the site so much. It is worth it to me.

That may be possible but it would have to be on a person-by-person basis as I'd have to create a one week subscription type thing. For the most part, the screen shots are pretty accurate. They aren't showing you all the graphs and charts available though.

Will the premium site automatically use all rounds previously entered into scorebook?
Yes, it uses all that information and you can play with dates to see what you averaged between say.. November and December, things like that.

On the Average Score per Month chart, what does the yellow line tell you? Is that putting performance?
The bar and the numbers at the top of them are your average. The line represents the course average for that time period and you can find the specific numbers for the line just below the chart.

First let me say - sweet - I love the features and it works great. Thanks, and I'd like to think paying 25$ is a positive since it'll only help to make the site better - I'm surprised you haven't done it before now! :D
This quoted feature goes back to a suggestion I had made easier, and we had discussed it briefly. What are the odds of also including something like this in your own DG profile? In addition to the "Haven't" played feature, what about incorporating it into your profile map?
Couldn't be much different than what is already done as far as setup, and it would be another interesting look at the work you still have to do in an area. And instead of making courses disappear - you simply add the unplayed courses in the area and make them a different color from the favs, played, and wish listed.
You know since I'm a paying customer now - I'm going to making suggestions all the time now right? ;)
Hey - you opened the door! :D
Thanks again for all that you do!!!

That would be a LOT of courses for many people and I honestly think displaying them all would possibly crash some browsers depending on what kind of PC you're on. I think excluding courses you've played on the map browser accomplishes the same task without the overhead of loading every course under the sun in the map.
Is there going to be a way to sort members by premium membership/regular membership?
I hadn't planned on it since it doesn't necessarily represent any particular level of participation on the site.

How about finally sorting trusted reviewers by level? That sounds like a great premium feature!
How about finally sorting trusted reviewers by level? That sounds like a great premium feature!
That would be a regular feature if I could figure out how to do it :) The way I do it now is just pick everyone that meets the minimum requirements through a formula and then I plug the numbers into a function as I output the results to show whatever medal is supposed to be there. A possibility would be to do bronze and above (current view), silver and above and gold and above. So there'd be no sort but you could kind of filter out lower levels depending on what you're looking for.

Bug:
I've got one hole listed with zero putts:

But on the Premium Pie Chart for that course it shows '0' occurrences of zero putts.

Tim,
Attached is my personal Chart data for Agnes Moffitt Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/../course.php?id=680).
Can the "Average Scores per Month" be updated to be a true timeline without skipping months? That seems to me like it gives a better, more accurate perspective of how your performance has changed over time.

If a month isn't shown that means there isn't any data for that month. I pull all the information out and group it by month/year. Did you want to see a "0" bar with a course average there?

Yes. If I play in January, then skip six months, and then start playing every month I want to see there was a six month gap in there.
This has a twofold benefit. First, it gives a more accurate, linear, progression of your skill/play on a course. Secondly it can give you an accurate representation of your play as effected by the seasons.

Makes sense to me. Time-series graphs that don't space things out according to the real time intervals are a pet peeve of mine too.

Correct, it's a checkbox like the "show courses with photos", etc.

Tim, see attached example. When the course average is zero for month "N" I think it would look better to just skip plotting the point and connect the line from the point at N-1 to N+1. [Not skip the month in the timeline, just skip the plotted point, if that makes sense.]
Unfortunately you can't really do that. The number of points has to be equal to the number of bars in this particular case. There may be a way to fudge it so that the point is plotted higher up and without the dot although that might imply to people that the course average is that high for that month.

New feature for premium members. You can now download the current browse map view as a GPX file for your GPS. You'll find the option in the lower-left corner just under the map. The GPX file is limited to a 50 mile radius from the point you click on the map.

hhrrrrmmm....hhmmmffff... Okay it works, I like it, it will come in handy down the road, but can't you just put a print screen button in there as an option as well. I won't be utilizing the GPX type file option in the near future, but every joe schmo could use a quick print screen or even print map option for what they pull up on the map browser. Plus, many could use that map in conjunction to having the GPX map on their GPS.
Again, I know I said this before, plus it's not a GPS ready, but it's still a handy feature if a person wants to quickly print off a map with more than one course location on it. And no, it's not the same as hitting print screen and printing off of notepad or draw, and it's not the same as clicking the link to one course and going to Google maps that way.
I already added the button, it's on your keyboard :pI don't know what you're envisioning in your head as this grand "print screen" idea but chances are it won't happen when like you said, all the options that aren't the same as whatever it is you're thinking about provide adequate results with little effort.
File->Print works pretty well too :D
srm_520
04-22-2009, 01:02 PM
file print would be great if worked. If I do a file print with in the map browser or my own course map, all the regular stuff on the page comes up, but the map portion is always blank. Print screen on the keyboard works, but then I have to paste it into draw or something app to edit down and that's annoying.
Theres no grand vision, just the same thing we've talked about before like with google maps, if you go into google maps itself, you always have the option to print what you're looking at - I'm just asking why I can't do that here on the map browser or on my own course map.
File->Print works fine in Firefox. Haven't tried IE.

Tim, you should really announce stuff like this as a PM to everyone or maybe start a newsletter. I only read threads I see from the frontpage so it's easy to miss gems like this.
I love the idea of the premium membership. This would get me to actually use the round recording features. Hell, I'd send you money just for asking. This site is the greatest thing ever. I was asked today why the course I just built isn't on the PDGA site yet. I asked, "Why anyone would use that anymore?" ;)
Something I would LOVE to see which perhaps you could add to the premium features is a list (like those on the frontpage) ranking players with the most reviews written and, more importantly, # of courses played. Might make for some good motivation to go play new stuff.
Thanks :) I just started the premium thing last week so it's still new. I'll have to figure out a way to promote it a bit better. Maybe I can do a newsletter. I know people hate spam so I don't really want to send an unsolicited global PM.
Regarding the members thing, you can already do a lot of what you're looking for. If you go to the member browser and bring up a list of all the members you can sort by # of reviews, courses played, etc.

i cant seem to export the GPX file. all i get is text. is there a way to possibly have a start and stop point and get all the courses within "x" amount of miles of the route programmed?
The GPX file is just a text file.. you'd download that and then upload it to your GPS unit. There isn't a way to do what you're looking for as far as a route goes since I have no way of doing point to point directions to know what route you'd take between A & B.
The GPX just exports the points currently on the map. I guess you could click along your route, export at each step and then try to remove duplicates before importing to your GPS.

I've been on the www since about 95 while residing in Austin so I tend to like the old school internet mentality of free stuff and open source but as much passion and time as the ADMIN puts into this place he is entirely justified in offering a pay to play portion of a web portal. I would urge folks to support the concept. I am not the type to sit at the computer doing data entry on my own scores. After years of playing that phase has past. Years ago I would have been on this function like gravy on rice.

Amen! The score tracker should really be used to track our own individual progress and not bragging rights vs others on that course.
I could see not allowing people to enter their own pars and only allowing the pars for the course's Hole Info page to count but what Tim has in place makes it more customizable.
Tim, I LOVE what you have in there. Though I've only been using the tracking for a month or so I think it's great and since I've always tracked number of missed putts I especially love that you have a space for that feature are well as a note field for every hole.
I'm with Eric on this one. Numbers are better than words in this case.
Tim,
I want to enter another plea to adjust the Advanced Stats display.
The current numbers reported are pretty much worthless under the column headings of:
Aces D. Eagles Eagles Birdies Pars Bogies D. Bogies T. Bogies
Since any member can adjust their scorebook entry to list whatever value they want for "par" there is no standardization as to what these numbers mean.
E.g. if a 450' hole has DGCR "Par" of 4, and DGCR "Pro Par" of 3 and the Advanced stats tell me that there were 10 birdies, 17 pars, and 22 bogies. I really don't know what the scoring distrubution on that hole was.
It would be significantly more useful to display the raw scores for each hole, i.e. Number of 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's, 7's, 8's, and 9+'s.
Thanks for considering.
x3 - would be a great change to implement! Although I might get sad when I don't see BIRDIE for all my 4's :D JK of course!!!
That would actually be way easier to do than what I am doing to figure out the aces, etc.

Tim, Just for advertising purposes, I think it would be worth having some sort of link for "premium memberships" on the front page -- just so people can find it and know how to sign up. It takes a little digging to even get to the premium signup. Maybe even just a tiny little crown in the upper left of the logo or something that is clickable. I dunno -- but you've done an amazing job (and continue to do an amazing job), and deserve to make it easy on yourself for folks to sign up for premium membership...

I can add something to the home page or maybe just to the My Dashboard drop-down menu if someone isn't premium, a "Go Premium" link or something along those lines.
I do have links scattered throughout the site if you're logged in and not a premium member. They're not overbearing, just little reminders here and there.

I've never used the scorecard thing on here and perhaps never will--but $25 a year is a small price to pay for what this site offers me...I remember after being on this site for about a month if Tim had a PayPal or something set up so I could donate for all his time and effort...I'm glad that there is a way to do that now...

True, It took a while for me to have $25 spare bucks. It was my Birthday present, a month late.

Fair enough. I certainly wasn't going to call anyone out and I know $25 means very different things to different people. I can afford it and I've told Time many times I'll give him as much money as I can afford.
No worries MotoDj. Enough of us have been on both sides so we know how it goes.
Next time I get paid I'm upgrading to premium. I gave the PDGA theirs this year and now I'm going to take care of my other disc golf fix.

To restate the "what $25 means to different people" avenue...I think $25 from everyone who can afford it would make a bigger difference to Tim and the longevity of the site than it would to the individuals giving it.
I'm on the side of the fence where $25 isn't a big deal anymore. I'm not so far on this side that I've forgotten the other. Earning very little or being unemployed with student loans and credit card debt are not a distant memory to me. I love this site so I go out of my way to order the tags I might not use and a window decal I haven't put in my car yet.
I apologize for how I may have come across. Some of my biggest beefs with people around me are over situations where someone can't understand not being able to afford something basic or even extravagent.

Done. Finally. Sorry, Tim. :o
Thanks Kris, I appreciate it (and no need to apologize!) :D

Hey, I just renewed my premium membership for year #2. I'm thrilled to be able to contribute to this site once again and I hope those who can afford to will join me.

*Sigh*
Can't believe it's been a year. Since I'm on a budget diet right now - renewal must wait. I'm sure I'll be back on bored soon enough.

Well, it was a toss up for me. Do I go with Premium Membership? or do I get the Bag Tag with my name on it? I opted for the name tag. At least I'll FEEL like a premium member! Whenever I'm asked about taking pictures for the DGCR website, I'll hold up my tag like a badge and say "I'm a photographer for DGcoursereview. Have you heard of us?" :D
Wait until I start handing out 007 tags ;)
