Ok, peeps, please help me understand.
What exactly does the high number rating mean? the 850, 900, 950 rating.
I've seen that par chart before but there is not explanation on it.

A player with a 1000 rating shoots scores averaging the course rating known as SSA. Every 50 points lower rating and the player averages 5 throws higher. So players with ratings around 850 average about 15 throws worse than the course rating. Professional course designers use these skill levels (Gold 1000, Blue 950, White 900 and Red under 875) as a reference for how they determine hole designs and lengths they establish from a specific set of tees.

Thank you very much. I understand and it make a lot more sense now!

Unless the course is especially designed for a lower skill level, or unless you are setting par for some special tournament, you can simplify your life and just go with:

This works for the vast majority of people for the vast majority of holes on the vast majority of courses.

I find that way too simple.
an example:
Hole 8 at East Roswell Park, par 4 all tees:
300', 324', 342'

It's not even in the middle of the strictest guidelines and this hole is a legit par 4 in my opinion.
I have 3'd it once from the blacks and once from the reds and both times felt like I won the damn lottery.

"vast majority"
1. There will always be exceptions.
2. This chart is for people who can't think for themselves.
3. Elevation is not included (see #2).
4. Hard doglegs and forced layups (short of water or OB) will cause exceptions (see #2).
5. See #2.
