The fact that you didn't put a smiley or a wink with your reply makes it all that much funnier.

To the OP, you're course is in good hands. Have you played any courses in Charlotte? He's had his hands on many of them. Renny, Hornets Nest, Nevin... just to give you an idea.

Stan's a hall-of-famer, 3-time world champion (Masters), and has a reputation for creating marvelously challenging disc golf courses in and around Charlotte. You're very fortunate to have him designing your course.

Kilborne, Stumpy Creek, Eastway, Bradford Park, Sugaw, 3 Elon courses,

There would be very little Charlotte DG if it wasnt for Stan almost killing himself numerous creating Renny, Hornets Nest/Web, Sugaw, dickerson Park, Veterans Park, others I forgot, numerous closed parks and courses out of Charlotte.

That's why I ... after Nevin. I figured listing those three course alone would give him a pretty good idea of the epic designer he was inquiring about.

But Kilborne? I thought someone else did Kilborne. Did Stan design Skillborne perhaps?

Well he designed the Skilborne layout at least. No designer for Kilborne listed here.

Ah ha, I found it! On DGU it shows Steve Lambert and Alan Beaver as the designers for Kilborne.

I think Stan may have done the most recent redesign there.

Stan was going to make Nevin easy! Me and Matt Keatts had to beg him into letting us design the bits that eventually made it an (advanced beginner course) :-P

From the old Mule himself. Here is the design and a message from Stan.

"Howdy,

I thought you Pinehurst disc golfers might want to know what the status is on the proposed course in Chicken Plant Rd. The Park Dept. has purchased nine Mach 2’s for phase 1. Phase 1 will be an Eagle Scout project. I met with the scout and the park dept and walked holes 1-9 that will be his project which he hopes to begin by March.

The second phase, the back 9, will probably not happen till the next fiscal year. However, if there is a strong local contingent of disc golfers who would be willing to organize and work, perhaps we can convince the park department to allow the club to prepare the fairways on the back 9 in anticipation of when the park will have funds for the baskets for the back nine.

I have tried to convince the park dept to install two sets of concrete tees on each hole. This would provide a long tee for more experienced players and a tee for those of less experience or skill. They seem open to the idea but funding is always an issue.

The front 9 should play around 3700’ from the tips and be par 30 as it will have three par 4’s. The back 9 should play around 3500’ from the tips and also will be a par 30 with three par 4’s. This would put the layout in the general ballpark of 7300’ from the tips with three of the holes bringing the pond into play.

Hole 1-330’ par 3, Hole 2-320’ par 3, Hole 3- 650’ par 4, Hole 5- 290’ par 3, Hole 6- 370’ par 3, Hole 7 660’ par 4, Hole 8- 520’ par 4, Hole 9- 305’ par 3. Hole 10- 290’ par 3, Hole 11- 260’ Par 3, Hole 12- 690’ Par 4, Hole 13- 550’ par 4, Hole 14- 280’ par 3, Hole 15- 300’ par 3, Hole 16- 260’ par 3, Hole 17- 300’ par 3, Hole 18- 600’ par 4.

There are no amenities in this park at this time. No restrooms, no parking, not anything. They will provide some parking spaces, but this will be a primitive course until they develop the ballfields (the clearing on the map) and build a restroom facility.

Hope this help you get an idea what is coming to town.

Sincerely, Stan McDaniel"

It appears that this course will be a good complement to the new course at Southern Pines Reservoir Park i.e. Pine Cone Crush. I hear that Sandhills CC is thinking about starting a DG Team that will travel and compete with other colleges. I looks like the design above could make a fun tournament course.

That's gonna be a nasty (in a good way) course.

I flagged trees NOT to cut and painted trees that need to go on the front nine today. Quite tiring actually. It is almost easier to get out there with my chainsaw and just do it.

Still, the scout is now ready to get it on and begin his project that will bring 9 holes to this park. I would love to get up with any local disc golfers and see if they would be interested in working on clearing the other 9 holes in anticipation of the park having more money in the upcoming fiscal year. If there are any local discers in the Pinehurst area who are interested, you can call me at 704 724 2647. I will come down with chainsaw to meet you all and tear it up.

Thanks, Stan

I was wondering if the sandy soil in your area dulled a chain as quickly as black dirt or clay soil. You can never have enough sharp chains when it comes to taking the stumps down as low as you can to prevent tripping.

Hey there Jack,

I hope the work is progressing nicely there. No shortage of work in Charlotte with three under construction right now. Hard for me to keep any kind of focus. Let me know if or when you want to take another walk there.

I will probably be in sorry shape for the VTI this year with chainsaw body syndrome, but I can't wait for the fun to begin.

Sand is much worst than black dirt. sand is just very little quartz rocks. In the sand you have to buy a new lawnmower blade every year and sometimes more often

Okay,

If you Pinehurst folks want to speed up the process of getting the 9 intial hole course expanded to 18, we have permission to do the cutting and clearing on the back 9 from the park department. This is up to you guys and the level of support you can muster. I will be in touch with you to plan this out. If you can get it cleared, then when they get the funds for the second 9 baskets it will be clean and easy.

Thats right. If you guys are serious I will bust it for you! Get a list of volunteers and lets show the Village of Pinehurst how serious you are about disc golf. With the back nine cleared they will purchase 9 more baskets the next fiscal year and you will have a serious tournament course to work with.

The scout and park department understand now what I meant when I told them the scout might have bitten off more than he could chew. They have asked me to help them. Quite a different position than the scout and his parents had both time I met them. I told them so !!

Anyway, I went down today and cut holes 4 and 5 and some of what was left on 3. I will probably help some more in a couple of weeks, but if you guys want to hook up with them it might get baskets in the ground sooner.
