I've seen the discussions among MN members, much of it on the GGGT thread. It appears as though we have a strong showing on these forums but no formal gatherings that I have seen.

I grew up in MN, and spend about 6 months a year here, generally ~2.5 Months in the spring, ~2.5 in the fall, and ~1 in the winter.

So I propose a get together Saturday Feb 5 (the day before the superbowl) 12:00 noon at BRP. A wonderful place to play in the snow. We'll descend upon their winter "league" (not really a league, an average of about 5 people show up each week to play on saturdays in the winter) a friendly welcoming group of people.

Of course the Time/Location/Day are all up for discussion after we gather some input.

Any Discussion?

It would be nice to get out with some people, but alas until I get back into the classroom fulltime and find that perfect teaching position so I do not have to work my second job, I am stuck working Friday and Saturday nights while I substitute. This means that it is nearly impossible for me to get out to BRP unless it is a holiday or a tournament. You do not go to BRP unless you are prepared to be gone from home at least four hours.

However, there is the Winter Carnival this upcoming weekend at Como Park. It is sponsored by GGGT and I am scheduled to play in both the Saturday and Sunday tournaments and the overnight marathon. I have a pass from the wife and work to attend these. I am flex starting around noon on Saturday, finishing up around 3pm, warming up at some local restaurant, returning to tee off for the marathon around 6pm, finishing that whenever my arm or legs fall off, and then flex teeing off for the Sunday tournament at 9am. If you any those are good times, let me know and we can get a larger group going. A friend of mine is playing with me starting Saturday and the marathon but cannot make the Sunday. I have two other friends who might play but definitely would only play one of the two days, again likely Saturday. Sunday sounds pretty lonely right now.

The course for the Winter Carnival is 28 temp holes set up around Como Park near the zoo. It is the same layout every year with a few minor tweaks here and there. Great for all phases of the game. If anything, it lacks huge elevation changes but beyond that it has everything else as it weaves in our mature trees of a park, a small patch of younger trees, around park landmarks and fixtures, and a few long distance open field shots. You do have to play a little cautiously because a few shots are near active roads, but we are only talking about insanely bad turnover shots that are going to cause problems.

I've definitely been considering the winter carnival, haven't decided on a day or times yet, but either of those could work for me, my dad would probably also be tagging along. I'll get back to ya if and when I decide to head out there.

Garrett, league starts in March. March 19th at Rosland Park to be exact. It is a preseason and player's meeting, but I would like everyone there who is going to play or is considering playing this year to show. I would like to see money as well but it will not be mandatory until the April event.

If that is the case, I can throw in 5 dollars as well.

If, IF, you are planning on playing in the marathon overnight round, you have to attend a winter camping survival seminar tonight. It is free and it is recommended people attend even if they are unsure whether they are going to play in the overnight marathon or not. If you do not go to this class (6:30-9:30pm, Monday, Jan 24th), then for sure you cannot play overnight.

The seven day forecast is predicting that night to be a decent night for winter. Obviously things change and you cannot trust the forecast more than two days out, but I am hopefuly considering the weather we have been having the last week. Last year's weather was fantastic so I am hoping for a repeat.

I tee off at noon on Saturday since it is a flex start, finish around 3pm, heading to a local restaraunt to warm up and tape lights to my night discs, tee off for the marathon around 6pm (unless Char wants us there earlier), play until I drop, and then tee off for the Sunday round at 9am.

While it may make it slow going, I love playing in bigger groups. Obviously having more spotters and those who can kick up snow where they think a disc landed definitely helps, but I find the company of a lot of people who know how to have a good time essential for having fun.

Wow, there seems to be a lot of interest here. Let's all meet up this summer, hit BRP on a busy day, and clog it up even more with a 20 man group :P

Any city players interested in meeting halfway this summer at St. Cloud? There are a couple solid courses there.

Martin Dewgarita
01-24-2011, 11:08 PM
I'll definitely do St. Cloud at least a few times this year, I love several of the courses around that area, and my grandmother loves it when I visit.

We'll keep this thread as our headquarters and plan meetups at BRP, St. Cloud, Cities area courses, and if anybody wants to come to southern MN, I'll show you around some awesome courses down this way.

Johnson
01-24-2011, 11:26 PM
What courses have you played in Cloud? What's your fave? I love Riverside, if you're feeling daring Millstream is just plain sick.

Martin Dewgarita
01-24-2011, 11:33 PM
I really like Hidden Lake, though I wish it would be better kept, maintain the fairways pour some concrete tees, but I love the layout. It's a tossup between Millstream and Riverside, I really like 'em both, I played the Northstar throwdown at those two last summer, the tourney layout was sick at both of them. Then not too far east of cloud is Clearwater, sportsmans hill, a short technical challenge that I could play every day and not get bored with it. Then, not too far beyond that is Becker, I love that course too. I've also played a handful of the others, Calvary was fun, crowded, and didn't excite me too much. Northside and River's Edge were decent.

Johnson

Calgary seems to be a newbie hang out. I want to play Becker, there's a course in Rice if I'm not mistaken, have you played it?

Probably not in for the 5th either cause I would need to ask it off and since today was my first day I think asking off would come off as "not good"

I will keep an eye on this thread as a place to post if I am every traveling out side of the Brainerd area though. Like my job, I need a two week notice or more for asking days off.

St Cloud would be a good mid point. I'm planning to get out that way this spring/summer. I also travel through southern Minn. often on my way back to Sodak and I'm planning on hitting as many courses on the way as I can. Where are you Martin D?

Martin Dewgarita
01-25-2011, 08:54 AM
Sounds like the 5th doesn't really work for people huh? Gotta plan more in advance, I tend to forget that everybody can't just pick up and play anywhere anytime. The more I think about it, the 5th doesn't really appeal to me either... Maybe we should set a date a bit more in advance to see if we can get a crowd showing up. I'd probably be able to make any date from april-june in st. Cloud or at BRP. And I still want to make it up to BRP for another winter round.

Where am I? All over the place, depends on the day. (The link in my sig answers this question and is usually up to date) Currently I'm in the Albert Lea area and will be here off and on until March, at that point I'll probably head south/souteast (Gulf coast for mardi gras, then I want to hit GA, NC area courses) for a month or so before returning to the Medina area for 3 months.

I'd also be game for a St. Cloud meetup at some point, I love riverside. Didn't care that much for Becker. BRP would be fun.

I'm much more open come about March. Once hockey season ends I've got more time.

Also Scott, Dylan will probably join the league as well, assuming a kid being there is not a problem.

If you are going to the Winter Carnival tomorrow, I am planning on showing up around 9am to get my player's pack and maybe get in a little practice. Our group's official tee time is going to be noon. I have absolutely no idea how many are going to be in our group. The only ones I have for sure is going to be me and Doug. PM me and i will give out my cellphone number so people can call or text when they arrive.

Also, I am playing in the overnight marathon and staying through Sunday morning to play in that tournmanet round. If you can and want to join me on Sunday I am thinking of teeing off around 9am. While Doug is playing overnight with me, he is not going to stay for Sunday. Good company would be greatly appreciated.

I definitely love Riverside. That is the first course I ever played. I like Millstream too in Saint Joseph. I also want to give props for the Clearwater course, it is a tighter, poor man's version of BRP and Kaposia. It weaves through the forest rather nicely. Finally, there is a course in Sartell/ Waite Park, cannot remember the name of it but it is a dumpy course but I would like to play for nostalgic sake. I lived in Saint Cloud for 8 years and only picked up the sport during the last two years. Oh so much fun I missed out on.

I cannot believe I almost forgot to mention Cavalry. A great course when Riverside is not open. They are constantly changing it so I have no idea what kind of shape it is in now.

Sundays usually work best for me if we plan a week out.

However, there are two big tournaments coming up. Mulligan Stew, but the exact date and time is not set yet, but it is looking at March 12th at BRP. The other is Moir in the morning at Moir park. I do not have the date for that but it should be on the MFA website.

My amateur league starts on March 26th.

Now if we can just get rid of all this fresh snow.

Hey fellow MN disc golfers. I live down in the metro and plan on doing a bunch of MST and MDS events this year so I will be traveling to St. Cloud, Duluth, Stewartville, and perhaps more areas. I'm friends with the MFA east side zone coordinator and the guys who run DGnuts.com. We are hosting a few fun events sponsored by a variety of businesses in the area this year. They are always a blast with prizes, food, drinks and other giveaways. I'll post more info here to keep people updated.

I won't be at the BRP Mulligan Stew but you can find me there often...considering forking out the $140 for the season pass this year.

Zip code... Plymouth Creek is my "home" course, 55446, most of the golf I play is on the west side of the cities, but most of the best golf that the cities boasts is all other directions, Kaposia, the valley, oakwood in the southeast. Acorn, lakewood in the Northeast, Elm Creek and of course Blue Ribbon in the northwest, I'm down to travel to any and all of the cities courses though. :D

I haven't played any courses in Minnesota, so it's all new to me. Of course, I would be interested in hitting up the destination courses, which might be too bland for ya. i.e., if you are sick of BRP or whatever.

But, my window is April 21/22-24, and you might be going to Highbridge, eh? I am probably saving that for a Memorial/Labor day myself... Let me know!

Well, the Highbridge is just a feeler, I'm leaning more towards the later 2 weekends (29-1,6-8). The courses you cannot miss are BRP, Kaposia, The Valley, and Oakwood, I'm always down for a round at any of those, I couldn't get sick of BRP if I tried. Obviously keep in touch, we'll work it out.

Okay, so MN's are seeming to be the Land of 10,000 Fakes...we have this thread but it seems like we're not organizing anything. I'm not pointing figures, and very well could have this thrown at me as you say "why don't YOU organize something"...so okay. What's everyone doing this Sat. morning? Let's get some BRP action underway perhaps...

How about Disc Jam (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?p=795578#post795578) next month, I'll be there Friday night camping out, should be a handful of people out there camping out, some beers, some glow golf.

As for Saturday, BRP doesn't really work for me as I'm in Southern MN, I'd be down to meet somewhere like Maidenshade (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1510) (the only really worthy course between here in the cities unless you could convince me to come up there, or I convince you to come all the way down to Albert Lea area), could get in a practice round for the tourney.

This Saturday is our first official league event of the year. With life as busy as it is for the next few weeks, that is only time I can get out.

However, I have already signed up for the Go Cart Open in May and the Minnesota Majestic in June. Those promise to be a good time. The Open I am playing advanced for the experience, but I had a bad experience last year at the Majestic when I played Advanced because of the sandbaggers. I signed up for Intermediate although I may change my mind if more people I know play advanced.

Thanks for showing up today. Sorry my game was really off. I have a million excuses but I think I am just going with I just plain sucked today even though I consider this one of my three home courses. Three OBs, one during practice in the water, another approach on Hole 8, and then the paved path on the second time through on Hole 1 did me in. I got to thank you for helping me get my River off that building's roof. That was basically the epitome of my day.

We are going to play what is open at Elm Creek this Saturday. It is my understanding that Three Rivers has opened up Holes 9-17, treating Hole 17 as Hole 1 for your round of nine. The deal is that the remaining holes run across the snow tubing and snowboarding hill and they are not sure if the grass is ready for foot traffic.

We are planning on teeing off at 11am.

Originally I was going to play BRP tomorrow (Friday) as a warm up for next week's Majestic. However, the weather is not promising to be good and I will not have any opportunity to practice there next week before the tournament.

So, I will be heading out there this morning as long as I do not get called in to sub. After talking to the city and getting all the paperwork going, it looks like it is all but official; our am league is going to be holding a Discraft Ace Race at the Becker Course on Sep 11th.

If you are interested, let me know. We are going to try to do some flyers and whatnot to help promote it because the only it really works if people pre-pay. Our am league does not have deep enough pockets to buy too many packages for walk-ups.

I think it is going to be a great time because the Becker course has great facilities for picnicing, grilling, and just hanging out before and after you play. We will have food as well as used and new discs for sale as well.

As of now we are planning on adding six temp holes to the course to alleviate some of the walking between holes, since several of them obviously have to be shortened up. This will make it a 24 hole course which you will have to play twice for a total of 48.

I am going to have to scout the course one more time to finalize where I want tee boxes to go and where to put the temp baskets. I am likely going to do this in early August once I know a little more about the prototype disc available. If you are interested in helping me out scout this park, let me know because I definitely want as much input as possible. I was there a week ago scouting and we think we have good placements for the first 12 of 24 holes, but testing them by more than two people would be great.

If this goes well, Becker has said they would love to have us up there more often to host tournaments because they like the idea of the course being used. The more people who stop in to play, the more likely they will stop at the local eateries and gas stations on their way in and out.

Just finished playing the Majestic. Scored a 89 and 91 at BRP. Not bad, not any where the pros, but not bad. Actually was sitting on the top card for Int all weekend until I exploded at Kaposia, carding a 94 while the rest in my group took 86s. Shame on me for not practicing the course a head of time. I had only three clean drives all day.

With that, I do no think I want to touch Kaposia again for a long time and I am not even going to think of BRP until the week before the BRP Open in October.

I might try to sneak out to some of the smaller local courses or Elm Creek (five minutes from my house) but I think I have been competitively wiped out for a little while. I want to get back to just throwing with friends for the fun of it.

I am, however, paid for the Go Cart Open II in early August. Anyone else planning on attending?

Shot a 71 and a 68. are these scores pretty decent? I can't tell if I was playing well or not, but I had very few bogeys so can't be bad.

I left my pink Z Buzzz pin high at the edge of the fairway on 16 at Kaposia. Putted out but forgot to pick it up somehow. By the time I went back, it was gone. No one turned it in either. I put it on the family schedule that I am playing in the BRP Open October 16h. I still do not know if I am for sure playing, but it is on the schedule. I would love to play there before then, but playing BRP usually requires a 5-6 hour commitment, which is not something between teaching and my family that I can often swing.

I am also planning on hitting the Winterblaster (December) and Mulligan Stew (March), so I will be getting in my rounds there with tournaments, I just wish I could play there more often for fun.

As for this Saturday, I am thinking of staying a little closer to him. I will likely be hitting Plymouth Creek or Elm Creek that afternoon. Plymouth is great for working on your mid game and running the basket while Elm really lets you unleash your full power drives.

This is the thing that I hate the most about 3 Rivers, they are never clear about what dates. I drive home every day by Elm Creek, and while I cannot play everyday, I try to sneak there whenever I can because it is only 5 minutes from my house.

Not that I have anything against Elk River, but that basically becomes my only option once Elm Creek closes.

As for this weekend, I am going to hit Bryant on Friday from 5:30pm to dark (basically one round). My son's birthday is on Saturday so that whole day is out. I am thinking about getting out Sunday during the Vikings' game. I will be playing with my earphones in listening to the game, but I would love to have company. I am thinking either Plymouth Creek, Central Park, or possibly Acorn.

Not that you have to go out of your way, but I lost a black Tournament Sword on Hole 11 on Tuesday. I was there last night looking for it and still could not find it. My assumption is that since I could not immediately find it that with the low traffic that goes through there that it is still hiding.

I would say that it is 380 feet of the teebox on the left. It looked like it had enough to clear the short trees that seperate 11 from 12, but that it was going to land in the tall grass. It had enough height and speed that it might be in a ways. There is a small path between 11 and 12, and I do not know which side of the path it is on.

If you happen to keep your eyes open as walk between the holes, that would be great.

Sorry, I ended up playing early in the day so I could spend the rest of the afternoon with the family. I ended up hitting Silverview and Plymouth Creek today and Lakewood Hills and Acorn yesterday. I am thinking about getting out one last time to Elm Creek on Sunday before they yank the baskets for the season.

It is MEA break and nice weather. It was packed everywhere I have been in the last two days, and I was playing late mornings and early afternoons. You throw on top of the regular joes who finish work around three or four pm and I am surprised you were even able to get in a second round at Acorn.

Last weekend for Elm Creek :(

Already played four straight days; 239 holes total. Legs and a knee a little sore but my arm is fine. Normally I would say I need a day or two to recover, but being that tomorrow is Elm Creek's last day I might still get out. I am not sure yet. Maybe at 1:30 so I can be home in time for the Vikings' game.

I do not think you were with us when we had carts at Highbridge. That would be the opposite of the definition of winning. Funny, but not winning. Nate and Ryan were driving a cart on Granite (or the other one allowed not Gold) and discovered a hidden stump at full speed. Nate was thrown from the cart and Ryan went from the passanger seat into the driver's seat.

Now, the 11th is a holiday and a Friday. I am assuming you have that day off from work as well? I am thinking of an earlier tee time, something like 9 or 10am so I can be home no later than 3ish.

I am likely playing in the tournament but the 30 or 40 dollars is a little off-putting. Being an employee (at least during the summer) of GGGT, I know that they will put up a lot of money and effort into making this a great tournament. Yet I have been struggling as of late in tournaments. I did pull in a -10 under at the GGGT extra tournament during their Ace Race where you could throw your regular bag, losing to the eventual overall winner who had -14, but since after the first round at the Majestic I have been really stinking it up.

40 dollars for advanced and no guarantee that I will play well, especially on a course I have never played before and might get in only a little practice the Friday before, probably not going to happen. I might go for the 30 dollars in Intermediate and go with the intention of having fun and letting the score take care of itself.

My next day off from teaching is going to be the 11th and I thinking of hitting up Snelling then. Starting with daylight savings time ending this Sunday, it will be dark by the time I get done teaching in the afternoon, so playing will soon be reserved for weekends when the wife and kids do not have plans and for days I do not teach. I think those will be few and far between. I debating whether to play a quick round or two at Elk River on the way home from teaching (giving me about 1 hour of daylight before I can no longer throw) or just heading straight to my church and checking out the land before I start drawing up a proposal of installing a course on the land.

I am looking to play in the Winter Carnival at Como Park in January and the Mulligan Stew at BRP in March. Beyond that I am already looking at our league(s) starting up in late March. Wow, this is going to be a long five months of sporadic play.

Awesome. I will bring a few bucks for the round and a few more so we can split the cart if you really need it. Normally I would not need a cart, but it would look silly if you drove around and I walked besides you.

Did you ever see the pictures of Ryan and I playing some night golf with a cart? Basically we were doing some drive-by putting and neither of us had a drop of alcohol.

Great memories, but I am sad to say that we did not give disc golf the best of reputations that night. Thankfully it was not a public course and we did no real damage to the grass.

Char told me that they have nothing in the works until the Winter Carnival. Trust me, the amount of work Char and Charlie put into the Winter Carnival I am surprised they have time for any other tournaments.

Like Cale's Shoot Out, I am sure they would be more than happy to support anyone who is putting on a tournament. Right now they are supporting Winter Westside Wednesdays.

There is an upcoming tournament at Blue Ribbon Pines called the WinterBlaster. Like the Ice Bowls, it will not be cancelled for weather. I have participated in that the last four years. Normally it is at BRP but one year it was at Cavalry in Saint Cloud. Unfortunately, every year I have been in it there has been snow on the ground. Three years ago I think it was at BRP and in the morning there was no snow on the ground but the blizzard started around tee time and by the time we finished the round the snow was already half way up to our knees. It was definitely a fun tournament, and we only lost one disc in our group. If the water freezes over, they call Winter Rules which means there are no water OBs at BRP. This tournament is Saturday, December 3rd.

The only other tournament I saw on the MFA calendar is the Fairway Freezer, another Ice Bowl, and that was mid January.

Tournaments usually slow down after November, but there are also a lot of weekend winter leagues about to start up.

My scheduled is filled up too. It was a stretch to convince my wife to let me play in last Sunday's tournament. I used the line that it would be the last tournament I could play in until the Winter Carnival in late January. It would not be best if I suddenly said there was another one.

I am trying to find a way to get down to Westside Wednesday tonight at Bryant Lake. It might be a stretch and I would be arriving just minutes before tee time.

I do have the whole Thanksgiving weekend free, or at least that Friday and Saturday. I definitely see myself getting out for a round or three somewhere.

I think it was three years ago that we teed off with no snow on the ground, but by the second or third hole in it was a full blown blizzard, and by the time we finished 27 holes the snow was half way up to our knees.

I am going to be very disappointed if the Mulligan Stew is held on March 17th (St. Patty's Day). It is the only Saturday in the month I could not make work (Cub Scout Aventure).

So, both of my monthly Am Leagues are starting up in March. I will be posting in another thread about that because I will be looking for more higher up Ams to play this year.

Oddly enough if a lot more upper level players came out for the league scott is talking about, it would probably dampen my enthusiasm for it.

Like I'm not that good, I enjoy the sport and keep trying to improve, but if there were more than 1-2 people who consistently showed up that I have barely a hope of beating then it would make me less inclined to play. Making an effort to show up and get my ass kicked isn't something I am interested in.

Right now I know I can show up and hang with anybody there on average except Scott and Justin.

If Scott and Justin became another 5-6 players I would not enjoy that I don't think. Since we really don't split divisions I would end up with a bunch of losses in single player matches, and even on the 2nd level card potentially.

AMATEUR Garrett, we are looking for am. Maybe I should better clarify, we are looking for players who at least know which direction a disc should fly and are not just hucking it. Most importantly, we are looking for the type of players who know which direction a disc should fly, constantly hit trees like the rest of us, but know how to have a good time about it.

I agree, though, our league is about having fun and not being slaughtered by skilled players that the rest of us could never hope to be half as good as.

Awesome.

March 24th

Wabun Park

10am

This is our preseason event where we discuss the rules, scoring, fees, schedule, and whatnot of the league.

The next event (in which you should have already played your three head to head matches) will be April 14th at Oakwood. The annual road trip is going to be in August at Highbridge. We are also going to push for an early date in August for our second annual Discraft Ace Race. Most likely it will be in Becker again because we had such a positive experience last year.

I played with you at Fort Snelling (I was the fat guy driving the cart) you don't hit enough trees :)

Throw in how many trees I hit on Hole 7 (?) and I think we averaged out just enough for everyone to have a few hits.
