View Full Version : Disc Organizer Change

I'm moving the disc organizer to a drop-down system rather than typing in your own model names. Plastics are now also shown by manufacturer.

If you need a disc model or plastic added just PM/email me and I'll get it into the system.

I'm currently in the process of converting all the old disc entries to the new system. I managed to do around 80,000 without too much trouble thanks to people spelling the disc names correctly. There are about 23,000 left that I'm going to try to figure out. I can't do them manually (since I'm not quite that insane) but I'm hoping to figure out a way to get most of them converted this afternoon if possible. If worst comes to worst, some discs just won't be shown properly until the owners update them.

timg

Also, I converted the disc browser to use the new system. If you don't search for a specific model, all the discs should show up. I'm still using the "old" names that user's entered as the display for now until I get more converted.

you work tirelessly timmyg... and we appreciate that...
the drop downs are nice.. but is there a way to do "other" and still be able to type it in?

timg
01-31-2011, 12:21 PM
What would be something you'd type in versus having it added to the model/plastic list?

sillybizz
01-31-2011, 12:27 PM
I see that there is still an option to put the manufacturer as unknown but there is nothing to pull down. Maybe this is where we could write in a disc?

I like the new pull down system, it was annoying writing in everything when you have almost 400 discs to put in.

PM/email me and I can list it. I'd prefer not to have type-in stuff since it won't really be searchable under whatever name you put.

When I try to edit my discs it says:

Which disc in particular?

Yep, I'm getting the error too.. it looks like the new drop-down field for disc model isn't working yet. Also, I'm pretty sure the entries should be 'Buzzz' rather than 'Buzz'. ;)

Pink Elephant
01-31-2011, 12:57 PM
It's happening for any disc that I try.

I have the same issue as Pink Elephant. I was trying to update my TeeRex to Tee-Rex from the pull down.

timg

Did you try a ctrl-f5? Does the whole page show the error message or just the select box?

I logged in as PE from here and it worked so I'm guessing you may have older files cached.

jimbosprint

The whole page goes white with just the error in the top left. Ctrl-F5 did not make a difference.

I click on "Innova JK Aviar-X" in my bag on the left, and the Edit Disc menu appears on the lower right. So I change it to "Aviar X JK" with the Model pull-down menu.

http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10255&stc=1&d=1296502283

If I click "Update Disc!" in the lower right, it takes me to this screen:

If I choose "Aviar X JK" as the model from pull-down and "JK" as plastic type, won't it appear in my bag as "Innova JK Aviar X JK"?

Shouldn't it be "Innova JK Pro Aviar-X" like it says on the disc?
Model: Aviar-X
Plastic Type: JK Pro

:p Too many JKs in these two posts. I need a KC.

When I try to access Disc Organizer, I get a "Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/dgcourse/public_html/bag.php on line 91" message.

EDIT -- That was only when I used the My Dashboard link at the top of the page. When I went into my profile, it worked fine.

EDIT AGAIN -- And now it's working fine, so I guess nevermind ;-)

timg

Fixed it.. the key point here was knowing that it happens when you click the update button, not when you click the pencil. I was testing the wrong thing.

Glad you guys like it. There were so many misspelled discs, etc. This should make it a lot easier to search for stuff. I still have around 6000 more to go through tomorrow.. I'm hoping the conversion goes as smoothly as all the ones I did today although I'm looking at a lot of one-offs now so who knows.

This is excellent. It makes it tons easier, and I don't have to make sure I spell the disc right by going back and looking at the disc. I love that you keep improving the site. Thanks for all your dedication.

Works great, but the Soft Magnet and Soft Challenger appear to be missing. I was curious and checked my Soft Magnet, but it tried to make it a Magnet.

Thanks for the continuous improvements.

P.S. I bet a good portion of the misspellings are either buzz or buzzzz.

Nice change! Just throwing ideas out there. Would it be worth it to have a Run option (1st Run, 1.1, 1.2, 10x, 11x, etc.)? I know some of that is in Model list right now- some together, some separate, and some not listed.

Alphabetical is nice, but is there anyway to get Innova and Discraft at the top? Those 2 probably are the most common by far. Sometimes when filling out online forms you have to select country, but the US is first one listed, then all the others.

If not, no big deal, the changes are still a luxury we are not worthy of!

timg
02-01-2011, 08:34 AM
It will always be alphabetical.. it's just easier that way from my perspective and others. We're talking maybe a half a second for you to scroll to Innova? :)

I don't know enough about those runs to do the list myself. I'm working off one that I believe juanbond sent me quite a while ago and am making additions as I get the suggestions. Also, added all the "soft" discraft discs just now.

I've always wanted to use something like a 1-10 scale (like the Sleepy Scale) to grade my discs instead of the New / Excellent / Good / Average / Poor ratings.
Not a complaint, just something to think about...

There are a little over 4400 unclassified discs at this point. The disc browser and your bags will now show the models in the database rather than the typed in models from before. If a disc shows a blank model, that means it needs updating so everything is on the new system at this point.

I'm going to try and do some more of these this afternoon if I can. At least we won't see any more Innova Buzzzs or Discraft Wraiths with the new system :)

I like this idea. And I wish I didnt have to click on the edit button to change this as the disc wears in, save it, and then go into another one to update it. Wish I could just have a drop down right on the main list of discs under loose, bagged tabs for each disc that I go 1 by 1 and drop it down, select the number and then just do a save for the entire update, sort of like how you check mark each disc then click on the Add to Bag button.

Perhaps in the next version of the organizer. This conversion (still in process) was a first step towards that final goal of getting a new and improved organizer out the door.

I think having a type in option would still be nice for this. I like to type mine in as 11X Teebirds or Wraiths or whatever it happens to be. That way it's listed on my list as such.

I have thought about the Innova Discraft at the top idea many times while on the organizer. Again not a huge deal, but it would be sweet.

It all worked great. My only thing would be to still have a 'type in' option or a way to add to the options that pop up. For example, I have a wall disc section that I like to have the reason for the wall in with the disc name. Like Innova Star Wraith 1st Ace for example. I would also like to be able to add first run in with the disc name like Discwing First Run Quarter K for example. I also like to list dye names or tourney stamps in the name as well. I know we can put that in the notes, but it's more practical and easier with it right in the disc name. Maybe we can keep it so the name that pops up in the list can't be changed but can be added to.

timg
02-02-2011, 12:00 PM
Adding text to model names won't be happening. As it is now, after the change, there is some level of consistency and standardization so searches, browsing, etc. are easier. Doing what you propose would throw that new level of consistency out the window. Granted, it wouldn't be as bad as it was... which was pretty bad (I still have like 4000 discs to fix with all sorts of issues). All the stuff you mention is far better suited for the disc notes anyway.

Yay! Only 1 of my discs is an "other". Whammo make a disc called the "Putter." It comes in the 3 disc set with the craptacular "Turnover Driver" and the midrange, whatever the heck they call that. I think I sent you a message from the disc organizer too, but it was late and I was tired (read: drunk) so I'm not sure if you got it or not. :D

Just put that in the notes. I'm going to update the disc browser tomorrow to see how it looks if I have it show the disc notes under the disc name. That way you won't have to view someone's bag to see that it's an x-out, etc.

The unclassified disc list is barely above 1000 at this point. I have maybe another 100-200 to go through tomorrow. Whatever remains I just couldn't figure out. They'll stay as "Other" and I'll move whatever the old name was and add it to the notes field for each disc.

All the molds I have marked as "First Run", "Autographed", or "Protostars" you can just delete. I'm going to wipe out my entire disc organizer and rebuild it in the next few weeks b/c it's so out of date. That should take care of 1% of those unclassified :\

timg

Finished everything up. There are a little over 800 unclassified discs. I moved whatever was the typed in model and added it to the notes field for each so people can see what they had put and fix it up.

Added the notes field to the disc browser as well. The disc notes will show for any disc that has a note.

Also, added a minis "manufacturer". I noticed a lot of people had them listed so it seemed like a good idea. Any mini should go there and then you'll have a choice of Innova, Little Flyer, Zing and other for now. If I'm missing some just email me or send me a PM and I can add it in.

Sleepy Scale addition wouldn't be too bad, but it would require updating constantly if you wanted it to be accurate. I still find it funny when I go into my Disc Organizer to see a disc listed as "New" and I now throw it.

Runs might be unnessecary.

These are two things that can be typed out in the "Notes" section, which are still displayed right there along with all of the other info.

Just put that in the notes. I'm going to update the disc browser tomorrow to see how it looks if I have it show the disc notes under the disc name. That way you won't have to view someone's bag to see that it's an x-out, etc.

That would be nice. I like to ID my discs with 9x, 10x, 11x, 1.1, 1.2, etc. and I miss not being to type that in the disc name. The drop down list is very incomplete and inconsistent with the KC and JK runs. Seeing the notes would help when trying to differentiate between all your TeeBirds and Aviars and could eliminate the need to have multiple Aviars.

(BTW- Aviar-x would be a nice addition)

Or maybe make it easier to "expand out" to the notes. Like "view all notes for this bag" or something?

timg
02-05-2011, 10:00 PM
If someone is missing, just shoot me a PM or email with the exact title of the model that the manufacturer uses (if possible). I'm not going to differentiate different runs, etc. If the top of it says Beast, then it's a beast and you can put first run and that kind of stuff in the notes.

i've always wondered why KC, JK and Pro were separate options under plastic. i feel like it becomes problematic when trying to describe something like an 11x KC pro teebird, for example. why would you choose KC under plastic when it already says KC along with "Teebird KC 11x" in the model field?

seems like it would make more sense to have Pro, KC Pro and JK Pro as plastic options and then just have "Teebird", "11x Teebird", "10x Teebird", etc. as model options. or even better, have 11x, 10x etc under the plastic options as well and then just the mold name for the model field. that might make the most sense since the differences between 11x, 10x, 9x, etc have more to do with the plastic than the mold anyway.

just thinking out loud.
