View Full Version : Recent Reviews for the whole day
I just added a little feature today that will allow you to see all the reviews for the current day.
If more than 12 reviews are posted in any one day, Next/Prev buttons should appear at the top of the Recent Reviews box on the home page. Clicking the buttons will allow you to page through the reviews that were written that day. That way if there are a lot of reviews (today we've had 27 so far), you'll be able to skim through the whole list rather than missing 15 of them if you don't visit the site until the end of the day.
You might have to do a Ctrl-F5 to force a reload of the style sheet and javascript if the buttons don't work for you.

How about making "Recent Reviews" a clickable link that takes you to a page where you can see a list of every review posted in reverse chronological order? It would include review date, course name, city, and rating. Maybe 25 displayed per page.
That would be a pretty long list. This feature was originally going to be its own page but I decided to try to integrate it into the homepage so people don't have to load a new page.
Btw, if you mouse over the course name in the recent reviews it'll give you the location.
On a related note, I change the links at the top of the home page "Track courses you've played & want to play - Track round scores & details - Track your discs" to point to your own account if you're logged in. If you're not logged in, they still point to mine.
Some people were getting a bit confused thinking they were logging into my account when clicking those links.

Tim,
It looks to me like each of those links just go to a place that you can get to just as easily from the tabs on top. It's just my opinion, but I think these lines are redundant and unnecessary. It may even be making the Home view too crowded and may even confuse people who wonder if there's any difference.
If people aren't logged in and they're taken to your info I can see why they'd be confused. I'm not sure why they'd want to be taken to your info. Can you make it so that they're taken to a page that says sth like "You must be logged in to use this feature" instead?
Just some thoughts...
Keep up the great work! I love this site!
They're more "advertisements" of sorts to show people an example of what they can do if they sign up for the site. That's really the only reason I have them there.

They may be advertisements, but If you're logged in you probably know all that already. Can you leave them by default, but hide them if you're logged in? I'd rather have the screen real estate for other things. Just my $0.02.
Ditto on the great site kudos! :)
I like that idea even more. I've removed the little tag line and links for people that are logged in.

this still takes me to your profile even when logged in.
i was wondering about that. i was also wondering about how to add to my wish list for playing courses. so far i havent found how to access and add courses to that feature.
Martin,
That whole line should be gone when you are logged in now. As far as adding courses to your wish list, towards the bottom of each course info page you should see 9 big buttons. The one to add to your wish list is in the second row there.

thanks tim. i think it took me to your profile again because i was signed in to post a message but not signed in on the "home page". a little more confusion clarified :)

Maybe it's just me, but I find the Prev/Next buttons confusing with the reverse chronological list of reviews. Intuitively I think "Prev" should take me to previous reviews, not more recent ones.
May I suggest reorganizing the buttons such that instead of both buttons at the top, there's one button at the bottom labeled "Older" or "Previous" and one button at the top labeled "Newer" or "More Recent". To me that makes more sense and keeps with the way the reviews currently scroll down the page.

What if I just relabeled the buttons?

IMO, that'd be better than it is now.

Also, you probably want to change the "Recent Reviews" title to "Today's Reviews", since that's what that box has become now.
Well, it's actually recent reviews most of the time.. only if the site gets over 12 reviews written does it become "Today's reviews".

The only question I have is, is there a way that when you are writing a review, that if it happens to take longer than 5 to 10 minutes it won't log you off automatically? Sometimes I am still writing or revising and then when I click finished, it says I am not logged in and I have to redo it. Usuall I will write my pros, save it, then go to edit and finish. Is there a better way or am I doing it the best way?
Either way, I still love you sight.

Tim may have a better way, but I do have a solution that works for me. I write all of my reviews in a Word document and save them there. That way I have them all available for easy reference whenever I want them. It takes me a while to write each review, but when I'm done I just copy and paste into DCCR.
BTW, all of my DGCR reviews are stored in my course guides-- 1) NC and 2) Other U.S. States-- in the Files section of my DG Course Reviews Yahoo group.

Either way, I still love you sight.I had a problem with with getting logged off during a review myself. I wrote the review for Watson Trail Park three times because of this. I noticed it happened whenever I used the Google spellcheck feature, so I started writing reviews in Word and cut and pasting them onto this site. Then we switched from Explorer to Firefox and I don't remember being kicked off since.

Well you certainly shouldn't be getting logged out. If you click the "Remember Login" checkbox when logging in you should never get logged out of the site on that particular computer unless you click log out. If you don't check that box, you should stay logged in until you close your browser.
There isn't a lot I can do on this end as it sounds like some sort of cookie/cache issue with your browser. Which browser and what version of it are you using?
If you're using IE, check your security settings. Maybe they're too high and you aren't getting the session cookie or something.

Another data point: I've been logged into DGCR continuously for three months without getting logged off. Same scenario on two different computers. Even after I reboot my PC my DGCR login survives. I'm using Firefox.

Tim, in addition to having the older tab listed for courses from today, is there a way to stretch the older column to include courses from the past 2-3 days? There are a ton of reviews coming in daily, and I if don't check the site for a day or 2, I miss a lot of those reviews on the main page. I figure it will help everyone if they stay on the main page a little longer before getting the boot.

I'm not sure if I want to advertise the review "helpfulness" rating so blatantly. Obviously it's visible in the reviews area but it's more of a foot note than a highlight.
As for expanding the amount of days the recent reviews box has, I'll look into it. I don't think it would be very hard to do. The only issue is the buttons would be there all the time which I guess isn't all that bad.

Suggestion; In the Recent Review section, is there a way to add the Course being reviewed's location (City and State)? On the fron page. The State/City is clear in the top ten reviewed, but in the recent reviewed one has to open it up to tell location unless they are familar with the area. Just thought that would be a cool addition.
If you hover over the course name the location will pop up in a tool tip. That's the best I can do at the moment since space is pretty tight on the homepage. One of these days I'll have to sit down and play with the layout and see if I can somehow expand that area out a bit more.
I made it so the recent reviews now goes back two days. I also added a little date indicator so you know when each review was written (in EST).

Love the addition. I didn't know you could tell the location like that. Was that always that way or new? Either way fantastic. That works and nothing more needs to be done in that area.
