Here is a fun challenge. You get to the course, and you are told , because of new rules, you can only take 3 disc from you bag to the course to play with. What 3 discs would you choose?

umm... that's a very good question I use all 15 discs in my bag depending on the shot but if I had only 3 discs I would have to choose:
putter/midrange- star shark best disc on the market
driver- star tee-rex
ultra long driver- star destroyer
those are my discs and im sticking to it (i think ill get back to you)

It depends on the course and condidtions.
Short course, calm condidions: S Wizard, beat DX Roc, E Spirit
Short course, windy condidions: S Wizard, new DX Roc, E Spirit
Long, open course, calm conditions: S Wizard, , beat DX Roc, beat DX Teebird
Long, open course, windy conditions: S Wizard, new DX Roc, Z Avenger
Long, wooded course, calm conditions: S Wizard, beat DX Roc, beatish DX Gazelle
Long, wooded course, windy conditions: S Wizard, new DX Roc, new DX Gazelle or E Spirit depending on the course

175 SuperSoft Wizard
This is mostly what I use anyway, but I carry multiples for different wieghts & stages of wear. I also just added a pair of MOLFs to my bag, but those would have to sit out since I'm not familiar enough with them yet.

star sl - long range, controllable, and versatile, can do long rollers, anhyzers or regular long drives. Also feels smooth and consistent to me.
elite z buzzz - roc is also a killer midrange but i only have a dx and the buzzz being in better plastic seems more consistent and is definitely more stable which adds predictability that i like.
supersoft wizard - doesnt really matter i suck with all putters but this one feels best to me.

Which disc to carry is always a thought-invoking question.
Distance:
Pro Wraith
Pro Starfire (or DX Eagle/Tee-Bird depending on my gut feeling)
Put & Approach:

I love the fact that this is a very easy decision for me, after being a player who played tons of discs for lots of shots I've settled into a 6 mold bag that's diversified through different weights and levels of beat. My three discs, which constitute most of my shots would be.
175 D Soft Magent (Everything 200' and in, so consistent)
175 ESP Supercolor Buzz (very versatile, 200'-280' turnover, hyzer or dead, dead straight)
164 X Avenger, (it's a really straight and consistent driver and I feel like it works well with my 340' or so of distance, like my buzz and my XL, it works great on a hyzer, straight and anhyzer line.)
Iceman

THe three discs that I would have to take would be....
1. Champion Beast
2. DX Roc
3. Aviar
I choose these simply because the are all the "old relyables" I know and trust in most conditions and situations.

07-10-2008, 12:48 PM
Ok, here are my three discs that I would bring with me:
Driver- DX Teebird
Midrange - DX Wolrf
Putter- dx Aviar
This might change though, I just picked up a Dragon, Roc and Viking and I am going to try them over the next few days. These 3 seem to match my playing style better then some of the other discs I have.

At the moment these would be my three.
Driver - Star Teebird
Midrange - DX Shark or Roc
Putter - Supreme JuJu

07-11-2008, 06:35 PM
I'm noticing two trends in this tread:
1. those who pick a driver, mid-range, and putter
2. those who pick two drivers, and one mid or putter
I'm in the second category. I would pick:
An overstable driver for forehands and tomahawks: Champion Monster
An understable driver for backhands: DX Beast
Something to putt with: DX Roc

I would bring
1. Z Buzz (Slightly understable mid)
2. Pro Roc (Stable to slightly overstable mid)
3. Champ Gator(Insanely overstable mid just in case there is wind)
I am not very good at throwing many of my drivers in a variety of flight paths. Plus I can get the roc and buzz out to about 350-375.

hmm i would have to say that these are the 3 discs that i use the most when i'm on my home courses, so these are the 3 that i will choose.
Putt/Approach - Discraft Pro D Soft Magnet (my avg score went down by 3-4 strokes when i switched to this putter a few months ago, i'm really a fan)
Mid Range - don't really have a midrange disc I like yet, but i use my DX Aviar for long forehand flick approaches....
Driver - Champion Starfire....it is my everything disc...
sidewinding
07-12-2008, 05:15 PM
Champion Wraith for stable driver
Champion sidewinder for straight and turnover driver
DX skeeter for aproach and putting

i just looked at my answer from 2 months ago on this thread and my opinion has completely changed... interesting. I first said, XL, Optimizer, Soft Magnet. One would stay the soft magnet, still a great putter but I would bring a 150gram beast and a classic roc.

1) 1st Run 175g SOLS - most versatile distance driver I've ever used. The 1st runs are the most stable run, so it's good for everything except a strong headwind. Currently use this disc for a lot of long, straight drives, anhyzers, and rollers. Can easily be "dialed down" for shorter skip shots too. Star Orc is my go-to distance driver, but if I could only pick one it'd be this one.
2) 176g Ching Roc - I've got 4-5 of these in the bag at any given time. I'd probably go with a lightly used one if I could only have one mid-range disc. After a month or two of use, the Ching (aka-"Flat top") Roc loses a bit of it's high-speed stability and can hit all kinds of lines.
3) 175g 11x KC Pro Aviar - My go-to putter and approach disc. I use it almost exclusively on shots within 200' and it's good on all lines. I've got several that have been in and out of my bag over the past 2 years, and after a while the flight plate starts to droop a little giving it what is almost like a thumb-track (like on the Banger GT)...excellent-feeling plastic too.

If I want to play with a small set, I just bring my Star Eagle-X and my E-Series Wizard and it works out great. But if I have to add one more, I'll bring my DX Roc along too.

I usually carry 3 discs on my home course anyway... they are:
Soft Magnet -- sticks landings, drops dead when it hits trees instead of ricocheting 40 yards into deep woods.
Star Shark -- control and accuracy. Can step in as a putter in brisk headwinds. Can be thrown off the tee for a soft fade.
Pro Leopard -- Drives, annies, and emergency recovery from when trees jump in front of my drive.

depends on the course, but if I had to pick three discs for ANY course, it would be:
167g Star Destroyer (pretty fresh)
175g Star Firebird (slightly beat)
175g medium-stiff Wizard (well worn)
However, if I had to go with two discs, I'd trade out the Destroyer/Firebird for a lightly used 170s Champion Teebird, and keep the Wizard in there.
For me, with the three disc thing, I throw both FH and BH pretty equally (slight preference to FH), so I don't need something neutral any farther out than a Wizard (which will go great up to ~250', or up to 350' with some downhill elevation). the firebird is perfect for skip shots, hammers, FH rollers, hyzers, etc... The destroyer is worth having just for the advantage you can get on a lot of holes with a max-D shot, and is great for big, sweeping anhyzers as well as big-sweeping hyzers.
I'm thinking back on recent tournaments, and these were the three discs I used most often. Destroyer left my hand on long teeboxes; Firebird on shorter tees or roller shots, and most of my upshots were with firebirds or wizards.

Pretty much on any course, this is what I'd take:

These are the three discs I use mostly anyway, so it wouldn't be to big of a deal just playing with these. Although, I would miss my Star TL for flicks.

The funny thing is I carry 15-20 discs all the time but i only use about 8-9. Great topic that made me think about what I could not do without.
The 8-9 I use most often are:
Star Destroyer 171
CFR Wraith 169
Champ Teebird 17?
Champ Sidewinder 172
Proto Tracker 171
ESP Buzzz 176
ESP Metoer 178

But I guess it would be:

I won't get maximum distance off the pad with a Teebird, but it's much more accurate. I use a Teebird for most drives under 325ft anyway, which is most holes. Unless it's real windy, I can take on any course with those three discs.

DX Valkyrie 175 (one of my two original discs I bought, too bad I don't even carry the Shark I bought at the same time)

I'd probably go against the grain and use:
166 DX Wraith (long and understable)
175 Star Starfire (long and overstable)
171 DX Aviar (putter, also for straight approach shots)
My aviar and midranges just aren't different enough at my current skill level to warrant excluding the two very different longrange discs.

I actually have a real three disc challenge coming up next week. My daughter and I heard about a group that plays night disc golf at a local course, and we are going to check it out. Part of the rules are, you can only carry a driver, mid and putter to play. No bags allowed. I have been racking my brain. I can't decide between my Champ Viking or Champ Valk. I need help.
Of course my mid will be my Coyote and the putter is my Soft Magnet.

This is my current tally (I just spent like an hour doing this, as I have nothing to do today). These do not include my favorites, as I have not tried enough discs to really have a huge preference.
---
I did not distinguish between plastics, some modified models (IE all the different rocs or aviars, the Surge SS, etc), colours, or weights. If someone failed to make a distinct choice of disc, I omitted them (IE people saying "x or y" for their driver). I also did not categorize by what people use these discs for (IE some people putt with midranges). I ignored people whose opinions changed. Situations where the same model was used for two different slots were counted as one vote for that disc (IE a buzzz used for both a putter and a midrange = +1 to buzzz).
Note: I may have missed some repeat posters if they were not obvious about it.

You know there is something to be said for throwing discs that a consensus of serious players agrees are good. So far I've converted to the Roc as my main midrange and the aviar P&A as my main putter and they've both helped my game a lot. I guess it's time to go get a teebird.

This really started me to thinking. I use all of my discs but some very rarely because they are only for a certain shot. Usually a get out of trouble thing.
As I thought of this the 3 discs I chose could do all of the things I needed, albeit with a slight adjustment in grip, release angle, or some other thing. I have just gotten use to what I do.
So for better or worse here they are.
Driver: Wraith. It is dependable backhand, and since I do a lot of sidearm I can use it instead of my normal choice for that throw.
Mid: Champ Shark. They are not making this in Champ now. Which is sad. This is THE BEST all purpose disc around. I can even putt this one if I need to change up my third choice.
Putter: The putter category has probably caused more discussion than any other disc on this forum. My choice is the FLX Challenger. For me it just works.
A challenge to you all. Next time you play. Take just these three and try it, and let us know what happened. I am going to do it.

If I used this trio, I'd probably never shoot from the rough.... why haven't I thought about this before?

I'm seriously thinking about narrowing my bag down to three molds.
Eagle
Buzzz
Wizard
I don't know which specific discs I would use for just three discs, but it would be those three molds.

I remember the first time I saw this thread or a thread like it and I had to think pretty hard what I want to use but now, I probably could easily do with just an Ion and Core and shape hyzer and anny and then can throw in whatever I want for distance throws. Would feel better about it though even more if I get my forehand just a little better.

Most of you guys would take the standard driver, mid and putter. I think I would do better with 2 drivers (stable-understable) and an approach putter.
175 Star Dart
172 Star Sidewinder
172 Champ Destroyer

I think I posted a while back in this thread but my choices have changed. I would take an R-pro boss, a roadrunner and an aviar putter

Medium Wizard - All putting and Midrange duties.
Z Stalker - Longer Mid for me.
Champ TeeBird - I throw it just short of my distance drivers, and I can power it down and it's really workable.

Really? I threw mine 400ft yesterday. Throw it hard with a slight hyzer and it will flip flat and sail out straight and far. Doesn't fade too much either.
I will have to try it for a couple mid shots and see how it does. The Z Stalker is a great disc!

Yeah. I throw my rocs around 300' and my stalker around 350' I generally reserve my DX Teebird for that kind of shot.
But yes I love my Stalker it's a fantastic disc.

Soft Wizard 175g
DX Shark 168g
X-Cyclone 175g (just bought it but it is my new favorite)
Everything else in my bag is supplemental to these three anyway, covering 90% of my shots or more. Teebird is for hard left turns because I can't flip it (yet), Viking is for long right turns or a few more yards of extra D (especially in tailwinds), Gazelle comes in when I need a shorter right turn or powered down straight shot, Aviar is barely ever used but could come in handy for a short finesse shot.

tough to decide.
1. Pro-D Banger GT
2. FLX Buzzz
3. Champ Firebird
I chose the Firebird for overhands, hyzers, sidearms and skips. I use and like the Stalker, but its not a good thumber disc for me.
for fun a second lineup that could be successful for me:
1. Pro-D Banger GT
2. ESP Wasp
3. FLX Surge

400ft IS a longer mid....that's easily fairway driver range with a champ teebird or something of that stability. I can get my mids around 300-340ft- so he's right.
