I don't know if it's an alteration but I put my first step at around 2-2:30, enough that I just lose sight of the basket/target which is at 3 o'clock. I can't x-step in a perfectly straight line, my big Irish legs won't let me.

The only modification I make is if I am throwing a big hyzer or anhyzer. I will start at a back corner of the teebox and move at an angle to the opposite front corner. Hyzer = Back left to front right. Anhyzer = Back right to front left.

I have seen the back facing the front of the teebox. It works. For me I need to stand at a bit of an angle to where I want the disc to go, but I am facing forward and pointing my disc right where I want it to go. When I pull the disc back on the first step of the X, I gotta keep the disc on the line I am going to throw it on, kind of like what you do with the girl when dancing Lindy, not that anyone else would know that reference.

My buddy I play the most with starts out with his back to the front of the box too. Gets good speed on the discs and consistently hits his lines. He tells me that he throws with his core. Really the only thing he's ever said about his approach to throwing so it struck me as important.

Yeah, I was just kidding. I have seen guys line up this way, adding another 90 degrees to the windup. I've also seen people do a full 360 on their drive - here's a video of a kid doing this:

I'm all for the X-step, as it adds some more length to your windup, and therefore the length of the drive. On the other hand, I think the more twist you add to your drive the less accuracy it holds. Compare the up-shot that you throw with no X-step to your full drive - the accuracy should be with the up-shot. The 360 kid in the distance video doesn't care where the disc ends up - he just wants distance.
Bottom line: add twist and degree to your drive as much as you can afford the lack of accuracy. If you can spin around three times and land it where you want, great - but you're one in a million. If you can drive 250' strait without a big run up, but hit trees every time you run, stand still. On most courses, accuracy wins, not distance.

Wiggins, that kid in the video plays at my home course. He was bombing 600 footers down this hill in Burlington, NC last week, no joke. I think he's 14 or 15 now. The kid is a serious prodigy.

I start facing the front with my shoulders parallel (or close to parallel) to the front edge of the box and my arm pointing toward the intended target. My first step is typically to around 11o'clock, and then I x-step and plant the front foot and release.
Off topic: Wiggins, Jr. is amazing, I've seen some videos of that kid!...WOW

Screw your proper form, I prefer my improvised, spur of the moment style. Anarchy in the UK baby! Ow, why does my hurt after I drive?

I play that course a bit, what hill are you referring to, in Cedarock I assume?
I played with this guy one day who said he was wanted to break Wiggins' arms, I don't think he was joking either, he looked like Walter from The Big Lebowski.
