View Full Version : Post a cool disc golf photo
This is hole #9 at Valley View Park in Altoona, PA. This is a 351' par 3 that plays at least 30', if not more, down hill. Thick woods lines the entire fairway on the right side. The left side of the fairway is wide open, but a normal RHBH tee shot is protected by a tree that sits right off of the front of the left side of the tee. You also have to be careful as it's hole #7's tee pad that you can see in the top left of the picture. #7 plays up the same hill that you play down on hole #9.
This is a fun hole. I've parked a drive within 20' of the pin on the hole for a nice birdie. (Does 20' qualify as parked?) I've also ended up 30' into the woods, to the left when a forehand tee decided to become a roller, scambling to save a double bogie. Ouch!
This is the first course that I played when I got into the game in the Spring of 2007. So this hole really seemed "epic" to me.

Again, thanks. I really appreciate it coming from you long-timers. And about the fairways. Fairways, I don't need no stinking fairways! :p
I guess that I'm the paranoid type and think far too often that I'm just annoying. And, by the way, I'm not soliciting for more ego stroking Sidewinding. :D My ego is well intact.

Thanks for reminding me why I don't live in upstate New York. :D However, it would be nice to get some rain around here. Georgia is now beginning the third year of terrible, horrible, no-good very-bad drought, while it seems the rest of the country is drowning. Every year, I wonder what we'll do if the reservoirs that feed metro Atlanta run dry.

This is from Mackenzie State Park on the big island of Hawaii. The guys are looking for a disc that fell into the surf. The hole plays over the edge of that crevasse and you usually have to deal with a stiff ocean headwind. It's one balzy hole.

I bought a set very much like this at Ollie's. It's a discount store that sells a lot of overstock items, etc. I threw each of the discs about twice in a nice grassy field... and proceeded to make sure that they were clean & un-marked, put them back in their box, and took them back to the store.
Nice pic, though. And Target, huh? Look out mainstream, here comes DG. :D

Mine came in a box like the Innova starter sets but those things started me off nearly 3yrs ago. I played 18 holes and lost the driver. Then I lost the other two during the following round (all on different water holes). After all that I decided I loved this game.

I bought this set for $5 on clearance. The driver was the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned, tacos every time you hit an obstacle. The putter is ok, but I have 2 aviars and a magnet, so since it's white I used it as a scorecard for a round while on vacation. The midrange I liked, until I lost it :(

Not at all. Look at the elevation change. it's at least a 25' drop. Just keep the nose down and you'll make it. There is also lots of grass off to the left (in the picture - to the right from the tee) you can play it safe on over by the red tee/drop zone.
If you don't like that one there are upto 6 other tricky water shots after the April rains. C'mon out to New England and I'll show you around We've got lots of water holes. Embrace the danger! :)

you can see on spotter sitting on the ledge to the left of the basket about 80 feet. weve played it enough years in a row that we pretty much know where it will be in the ravine if we miss the ledge. its an awesome weekend for sure playing there.

There is a course in New Mexico that these pictures remind me of. Lindrith, New Mexico (North of Cuba, NM).
The first 10 holes play through a pinon pine forest, with a few cutting across a pasture. Then you get to the "BADLANDS" part. Lots of rugged terrain with tough up and down holes that are really brutal when the wind picks up. After 7 holes of "billy goat golf" you get another 10 holes weaving back through the forest.
The signature hole #12 is called "The King's Throne" because the basket sits on a ledge under a rock formation that resembles a king on his throne (personally I think it looks like Santa Clause in the pics I have). The hole is only around 300 feet long but it's decieving. Miss-throws from the tee are penalized by having to hike tough terrain to get to your disc, then you still have to get up to the ledge the basket is on. A duece is doable, but 7's, 8's, and more are common.
Contact the Galloway brothers in Albuquerque for permission to play the course, I'll look for contact numbers.

How long do your discs last on terrain like this? I would think they would be so chewed up to throw a second round with them.

have your ever wondered what people do with their old discs? well..... dx plastic discs get to the point where they are so hammered they become, throw-it-into-the-big-rock-next-to-the-campfire-as-hard-as-you-can-discs. actually quite fun especially if you had a bad round that day. :D

I was transporting my basket after practice. I had to pick up my son at work and we decided to take some shots at the basket before we left for home. Gives a whole new meaning to "portable basket". It was actually kind of fun. Of course we only used soft putters, and I am glad we did because we hit the glass a few times:

A few shots of one of the back holes on Searight in Austin, TX...I was taken a few years back, heard the course may have been rearranged so I don't know if this whole is still using the same layout, but it was an awesome hole. Think it was like 13 or 15, and it was super chill, completely enclosed by the park trees so it was the best smoke hole in Austin in my humble opinion.
The last one is a CE Beast I removed the stamp from and with a few Sharpies drew up my custom version of a "beast." Additionally, the disc is resting on some of the wood chip fairway Searight had (and may still have for all I know), such a great course!

This, my friends, is WV disc golf. The 2nd is of the course dog, Scout. She'll literally take you to the next tee after you complete a hole if you're lucky enough to have her tag along with you for a while.
There are a lot of other cool pics from this group and so I'll attach the link. These guys deserve some credit for taking some nice pics and for taking the time to post them.

I've played Burke Lake a few times and I think that's also a leftover from the time that course was built ~30yrs ago. Try playing courses in Maine. You could have a wide-open 300-350' hole and it will be par 5 everytime. I think the case in Maine is b/c they are all private courses and perhaps the owners feel this makes new players feel better about their game so they will continue to frequent the owner(s)' course(s). That said, those are all great courses.

So do the "real" players just count everything as a 3?I'm not a "local" so I don't know. When people ask what I score on whatever course I just say my score, not over/under. Let's not get into the "What is par?" discussion.

Yeah, she normally hangs with me for just a couple holes too. But she stay longer if you play football or something with her. She had an old beat up ball with the laces coming out of it. I figure if I'm out of town what's the big deal with driving a ways for some realy great courses! I think I'd skip al lot of the super-tight holes next time but I sure would love to head up and stay over night. Those open holes and water shots are some of the best. Too bad I lost my Ice Bowl Wraith on the last hole as it got dark. I was just a few feet short of the shore. Boy would I be happy if someone found my disc in the shed...:D

Actually, since he's trying to post a URL it means it's already on the internet so all he needs to do is use IMG tags, i.e.:
[ img]http://www.imageurl.com/image.jpg[/img]
(take out the space between the first bracket and the letter "i")
Also, if it's not on the internet already, you can just use the "manage attachments" button and upload the pics through this forum.

some shots from our trip to houston.
this is a private course north of houston (actually north of conroe).
owned by steve dufrane. he calls it shawshank and a lot of the holes are "themed" from the movie.
the one looking out through the pines is "tunnelling free from jail (the previous hole).
the one looking back from the pin is the "green mile".
the one looking back over the water we dubbed "the congugal visit", (because you end up wet in the end). the tee was 286' back across the water, and directly behind the pin the dam dropped off 20' at least. fun,fun day of golf. and steve is one helluva host. anyone near to this course should call steve and play his links!!

for those of you who have yet to play milo/mcgiver in estacada,or.
here are just a few of the reasons that it is rated so high with so many people.
it is a beautiful park that is well maintained.
we made a trip out there last march, and out of all the courses we got to hit, this was the one that i would make the effort to to return to.
wish i had more/better pictures.
you guys know how it is, it's one thing to look at the pics, quite another to be there!!

What did you use for that long straight shot through the trees?
an "element" from gateway.
i've used/tried several types of mid-ranges, i have got to say that the element delivers the longest, straightest, most predictable flight path i have ever gotten from a disc.
and no, i'm not sponsered by gateway.
the closest disc i have found to the element is discrafts "buzz".
i was so impressed with this disc,i bought 3 more for spares down the road.
p.s.
i clanged my shot off the side of that basket, held my breath on what looked like an ace. that hole was right at 200' if my memory serves me correctly.

803.13 Holing Out
B. Disc Entrapment Devices: In order to hole out, the thrower must release the disc and it must come to rest supported by the chains or within one of the entrapment sections. This includes a disc wedged into or hanging from the lower entrapment section but excludes a disc resting on top of, or hanging outside of, the upper entrapment section. The disc must also remain within the chains or entrapment sections until removed.

I told her it was in. I have only seen that happen a hand full of times. I am so proud of her. She really has never showed any interest in disc golf till now. She played for the second time yesterday, and did great. She does best throwing Tomahawks, and is damn good at it. She needs to work on her mid and putt shots, but we are going to head to the practice field later today and work on that.
She wants to play in her first tournament next month and I am so proud of her for that.
Now if I can get her mother to be more physical, I will be really happy. My wife did walk the course with us, and I guess that is better than nothing. Over all it was a great family day.

As for #5 (straight one through the trees) I birdied that one both times in a tournament (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/scorebook.php?vall=1&ovcrse=2656&mid=519&sbmtd=1&sort=date&order=desc&vcrse=2656&fd=2008-05-01&sd=2008-05-31&tee_filt%5B%5D=0&tee_filt%5B%5D=1) with a DX Coyote. As far as I know that shot would count, tourney or not.
The basket tech standards are evolving. This is the first year in which they've classified baskets as: Basic, Standard, and Championship. And like I said that basket wouldn't qualify as Standard or Championship if submitted for approval in the future. Existing baskets are grandfathered into the classes as shown in the Tech Standards documentation.
As was pointed out in a previous thread this raises all sorts of issues with A-Tier sanctioned events held on legacy courses with old baskets that don't meet all the new Championship specs. It looks like that's why they've done the grandfathering.

Thanks for posting those. I really dislike very few holes, but this is one of 'em. I don't think there's a realistic fairway on that hole. It's an absurd hole based on luck, not skill. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Yeah that course looks like a blast to bad I'm from Chicago.
I played the course for the first time today and it kicked my ass. Both rounds I shot a 70 and I lost a disc in the lake on # 9. It was a trash disc, but that is why I carry them. The wind was too much for the Dragon, and I am going to have to invest in a heavier floater for the wind.
The problem with that course is its in a very rich neighborhood park, and because the Home Owners Asso. does not like outsiders, the park is closed to the public. It used to be open to the public, but some people had a huge party out there and trashed the place, and the disc golfers got blamed for it.
They are allowing us to have a tournament out there on May 8th, and today they opened the park to the pubic for one day, so we can practice the course. I am glad I got to play out there today. It was the toughest course I have ever played. The long holes were long, water hazards, and tight fairways. It was fun though. I can't wait till the tournament.

My vote is flooding. The car was carried there from somewhere else and the water subsided. There is some mud in the grill of the car, but no other obvious damage. I don't think it came off the bridge. I don't see any tire tracks either.

I gotta tell you - the more pics of Shawshank I see - the more excited I am for the tourney this weekend. Midnightbiker, you're missing out!

So after playing - what did you like? I'm a big fan of #3, #5, #6, #13. It's just a good tough course - frustrating and long, but solid. I can get passes to play and bypass the cop, so if anyone is ever interested in playing this course just let me know, and I'll play a round with you. Miller can play rounds out there as well.

My vote is flooding. The car was carried there from somewhere else and the water subsided. There is some mud in the grill of the car, but no other obvious damage. I don't think it came off the bridge. I don't see any tire tracks either.
I too noticed the mud in the grille and wondered what that could tell us. I was first thinking they drove from the water accessing it from a bank we can't see well enough. But flooding could very well be it.

It rained but not hard enough to flood and move cars around parks...BUT I do see the trash line a flood would of left behind...Maybe I slept through a crazy thunderstorm

I have never seen a hole like that before, with what amounts to walls on both sides. That is freaky.

First and only time playing there. But probably not. The south Jersey sandy soil sucks up most of the rain except in the hardest of downpours.

This is hole number on at Bryan Mclane Park in San Antonio,TX. If you look carefuly you can see my disc flying through air near the trees. This was my first time playing this course and I loved it. I can't wait to go back to San Antonio and play this course again. If you are going to be in the area, its a must play.

Check out ERicJ's #126 post for a some amazing pictures of Oak Meadows in Cypress, TX. We got around 11" of rain just over a day and here are the results. Basically the entire course (entire section of city really) is under water - note the post where the guy goes through the entire course in a kayak - friggin sweet. And to think they are about to have a tournament there!

I showed my wife that ring and she really liked it. She has strange taste though. She has 40 pairs of Flip-Flops. And then she complains when I buy more discs.

Hole #17 at Summit Park in Summit, Illinois. This place was loaded with pinball holes like this and a majority of them required hyzer shots. Got boring after a while. Fairway's are impossible to get through.. I mean impossible there are like 2 foot gaps between some trees followed by a dogleg that just can't be made because of that stupid gap.
I would play a skip shot 3/4 of the way down the fairway with something really overstable.

You would have to throw something overstable with some anny and get it to S turn.
