The different ways in which people mark their discs has always interested me.
Name and phone number aside, do any of you include other information on your discs? How about special markings or drawings?

PDGA number has proven quite useful in our mission to recover lost discs (http://www.txsdgc.com/Lost%20at%20Quail%20Valley.htm) from water at the LINKS (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2576) since TX States (http://www.texasstates.org/). With the portability of cell phone numbers, i.e. area codes all over the place, sometimes its much easier to look up a PDGA number on the website to find out if a player is local or not.
That posted list hasn't been updated in a while, the current recovered count is somewhere between 250-300.

The best I ever saw was a guy who had "Instant Karma" with his number written on the back of his discs. If its a disc I really like, I put "Reward if found" as well as my name and number. I have lost 5 discs and I have gotten one back.
I usually put the dgcoursereview.com on there along with my name/#

I used to know a guy who was a jerk. He would find a disc with a name on it and write "Is Gay" under the name than then put the disc back on the ground and walk away.

Sadly, I have not started marking my discs, but if I am going to play in a tourney some day, iguess I will have to get in the game. Is name and phone enough? Is there an advantage to adding a little something extra?

Bah, I just thought of something else. Sorry for the extra post. Has anyone thought about getting a rubber stamp made with their info and use permanent ink and mark their discs that way? The lettering would need to be fairly thick to be real legible. You might even be able to make a nice border or even a picture mixed in it. Hmmm, I might have to look into this. It sure would be easy to mark all your discs quickly and if it rubs off.....you get the idea. ;)

Marking your discs on the top is a lesson I learned the hard way...
I was playing at Texas States back in April, my card was up to hole #8 on the Valley Classic course. It's a long bomber hole just to get to the water you have to cross on your second shot. So I pulled out my red Star TeeRex and chucked a pretty good drive out there. Steven, another guy on my card, also had a nice drive. I failed to notice that he also threw a red Star TeeRex.
After everyone tees off we walked up the fairway and I saw the first red TeeRex, assumed it was mine, marked it, bagged it, saw another red disc about 40' ahead, commented to Steven on a nice drive (I think I may have even said "Is that you up there? Wow, nice drive."), all the while thinking about crossing the water on my next shot. After I easily crossed the water with my now trusty Firebird we walked up to the other red disc, Steven picks it up and says "Uhhh, this isn't my TeeRex".
Turns out I played from the wrong disc which is a two stroke penalty. I still made a four otherwise which I was pleased with.
So after the round Steven added up the scores and got +10 for me. Now when I'm double checking it's in my head that I had a 2 stroke penalty on #8 so when I get to that '6' I still add it as +2... so I get +10 instead of the +11 I should have. Later I found out that I got another +2 penalty for incorrect scorecard total. Four friggin' penalty strokes effectively from one hole.
So the moral of the story is to mark the top of your discs (I use my signature) so it's obvious walking up to it that it's your disc.

I draw the most random pictures I can think of, and mark all over the bottom of the disc with sharpies. That way, if i ever see someone with a disc of mine, or if any of my friends ever see them, they will immediately know that it's mine. The chances of that are slim, but you never know. I also write all the contact information I can think of on them. email, phone, address, name, social. ok so maybe not my social . . .

Name and number on the bottom. On top I trace a circle with a sharpie and fill it in. It gives me a big black dot on top. Its unmistakable.
I put my name, number and dgcoursereview.com on the bottom of mine.

A couple things here, and I just had this discussion on the course yesterday.
Top markings a MUST for two reasons:
1. Identification for not only in the field of play, but also pulling them out of your bag. A bunch of orange discs in your bag and you grab your mid by mistake over your long distance driver. So on my discs I use a wide tip sharpie and make a pie like/arrow shape on my drivers, a cross X across the disc for my mids, and I use spirals sometimes for special discs and putters.
2. Seeing the spin of the disc in mid air. Especially helpful for me as I am still a newb(only in time played) and am trying to determine how much spin is on an in flight disc.
On the underside I ALWAYS put my name and number. Have found discs and have seen similar and called and returned the disc. Wish others would extend that courtesy as well. At least one attempt at calling.
Was playing last week when a kid saw one of my marked mids fly through the air with the "cross" on it. He comes over and asks if I always mark my discs with a big X. I say yeah, my mids I do why?
"Well" he says, "my friend found one last week on hole 3 with a big X on it and it looked just like the one you threw".
"Was it a red Innova, star plastic?"
"Yeah, thats it," he says.
"Hmmm," I say, "that's funny cause my number is CLEARLY marked on the bottom of that disc with my name."
...a few silent moments, some feet shuffling for him..."um...yeah..um..I will have my friend call you."
Nadda for over a week.

I used to mark them with my name and telephone number but I never got called when someone found one. They would just keep them anyway. I know this becuase I would eventually find out my discs were in other guys bags every now and then. Eventually I just decided that if I lost one I would probably never get it back so I just started marking them with my pdga number.
The only exception to that was my putter when I was an AM. I used to write all the things I should think about when putting on the top of the disc and then if I wasn't putting well I would review it before the putt. It worked pretty well.

I resolved an appropriated disc issue a few weeks ago. My Roadrunner fails to fade and ends up right,in the adjacent fairway, right on the edge actually. A guy playing that hole is walking up the fairway. I can see him, so he can see me. He's hand carrying a couple discs, no bag. As he passes the area where my disc landed he stoops down and picks it up. I keep walking towards him. Now my disc is in his hand under two discs, like an ace on the botttom of the deck. When I get up to him, I pull 3 discs out of my bag and fan them out...all carrying my distinctive black dot (its about a 3 inch circle). He looks a little sheepish. Without a word he tosses my disc back towards where he "Found" it. End of discussion.

All i can say is put a phone number on the disc. If i find a disc without a number on it it becomes my younger brothers' disc. If it has a number on it i will call the person right there on the course and drop it off at our local disc golf supply shop. (that way maybe he gets some business out of it too) I've lost 3 discs this year all marked twice with my name and number and have'nt recieved a call but i am hoping for the day where i see someone on the course playing with one of my discs.

I always call if there's a number, it just seems the right thing to do. I know there are those who subscribe to the idea that finding a disc and not calling is okay...that the disc wasn't lost...the search was abandonded and the original owner has essentially given up the right to possession. I'm okay with that...what goes around comes around.
Interestingly, I've had a couple experiences of calling and the owner was greatful for the call and then said to go ahead and keep the disc. These discs, a beat Wraith and and a beat and scared Roc have become favorites of mine- nice to throw and kinda sweet because they were gifts.

Thanks for the tutorial on custom dying. Its a great job.

You included so many great tips.
I especially enjoyed the heads up on where things can go wrong and how to avoid them.

I go with name and e-mail. Have not lost many but no returns either. To those of you who do not mark your discs. Thanks! Because of my poor aim I spend a lot of time in the weeds and find a lot of plastic. I am sitting here looking at a champion Starfire disc right now. I would love to return it but have no contact info. I try to return all marked discs and have so far. But unmarked discs have allmost doubled the amount of discs I own.

I don't write anything on my Discs. I figure that if I forget/lose a Disc some other kid may find it pick it up and maybe start to play it and have it become a favorite activity of his. Or some other Disc Golfer will find it and have a happy day finding a Disc. I don't lose very much plastic anyway, I don't throw many Discs at one time and when I go into the deep rough I'm out there looking until I find the sucker.

My "KFC" disc was actually lost for 2 weeks. I lost in in a area of very tall grass next to a bayou and looked for 30 minutes and never found it. Found a LS Polaris and a Avair though. 2 weeks later, I got a call from a guy who lost his disc in the same location. He called me, and told me he found it. I live near the airport and he was heading to the airport, so we met at the airport.
I offered him cash or a disc, but he didn't want a reward. He was a really cool. Now when I find a disc, I do my best to get it back to its owner.

As soon as you put a drop of paint on that disc, and you will make that disc illegal. You will not be able to play in tournaments with that disc. Plus the weight will affect the way the disc flies.

I got this "works on plastic" waterproof permanent ink in white and black and the custom art 1x2" rubber stamp for $36 including shipping. I have no idea how long it will hold up but it is doing great so far. If you smudge the first time on the disc you have a little time to wipe it off and do it again. But it does dry pretty quick.

I didn't read the whole thread, so this might be redundant. Innova used to have mini ink stamps of their disc hotstamps, and when you ordered custom stamped discs they sometimes would have this small ink stamp on the underside to tell you what mold the disc was. I have an Ice Bowl '97 Aviar with an underside ink stamp that has been in my bag off and on since 1997. The ink stamp is still clearly visible.
Also, When Gateway started making discs they did not have a machine to stamp the discs, so a lot of the early Sabres had ink stamps on the bottom instead of a hotstamp. I have a couple of thrashed Sabres I have been throwing for nine or ten years, and the ink stamps have held up.
In short, I think Donovan's stamp will probably last longer than the disc will.

Goodness! I have no idea. I wouldn't even think of putting that kind of stuff near my discs. So, I don't know. I will say someone asked me to prove how good the ink was 2 days after I put it on a disc and I let them rub as hard as they wanted with their fingers. (I held my breath, because I did not want the ink to smear on my good disc that they had in their hands) But it did not smudge at all.
Sorry I have no idea if this helps or not.

Ive read that rule too, notice how its worded though. It doesnt say just painted. It says "painted with a material of detectable thickness. My question is whats the definition of "detectable thickness"? I say a detectable thickness is something that could be peeled off with a finger nail. If thats the case the factory logos are more of a detectable thickness than spray paint would be.

Yeah like a heavy latex paint or bedliner spray would be too thick, but I think 1 coat of spray paint is all you need. Ive seen that dying technique, which is pretty cool, but it seems more of a pain then stenciling. Especially because you cant keep the stencil that you spent all the time cutting out. Also when youre cutting the shapes out for the dying youre cutting the disc slightly if youre not really carefull. A stencil would be cut beforehand and then you use a light coat of spray adhesive to prevent underspray.
The problem is getting the rules reworded to specify what kind of painting is allowed and what is not. Because right now it seems open for argument, and could possibly lead to a debate at every tournament.

Update on the ruberstamps.net STAZON ink for plastic.
Well I have been playing in the morning and my discs have been getting really wet and getting wiped off on almost every hole. This ink is hold up about the same as the Sharpie that I put on them the day before. SO I would say, although the stamp is really cool, the ink isn't much better than a Sharpie.
It is just showing a light fade after about 16 rounds on my putter after wiping off the dew on many of the holes.
So no longevity improvement from that ink. Hope this helps some.
We all need to keep keep looking and testing and throwing ideas in here. though.

Have you guys tried the Sharpie Metallic Paint Markers? It seems that whatever they are putting in them to make them "metallic" is more impervious than their standard black inks. I have not tried it on a disc yet but have used them for years on developing trays (photography). They get wet over and over again with pretty harsh chemicals and have never faded on me. Just an idea.

Really?!? It must be the plastic. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense.

I have heard DX and Pro D plastic, for some reason, won't hold ink like other plastics do. I wonder if the metallic sharpie would fare better on Elite Z or Elite X plastic.

I've done some dye jobs and a lot of ink and champion plastic seems to hold better than any of the other plastics I've used. I have to say that I haven't done too many discraft discs though. One thing I have noticed is that if you do several dark layers of sharpie into the dx plastic it will eventually bleed through to the other side. When that happens nothing can remove it.

Yup. I found a Star Wraith that had four red marks on it (like a sniper reticle) and they bled through to the other side, and aint no way those babies were comin off

Yep. I'd say Industrial Sharpies easily last several months, but the oil based paint marker on Millennium Omega Super Soft was only good for a few weeks before significant wear showed.

I saw online last night that a regular red sharpie is harder to get off than any other color -- so -- for the sake of this thread I decided to sacrifice one of my beater discs that a friend gave me. He had covered most of the face of the disc with black, green, blue and red sharpie in a SC flag motif of sorts. I covered it with acetone, paint thinner, basically anything I could get my hands on. Sure enough, the red held and everything else came off. See below -- the red actually stained the plastic whereas the others just kind of sat on top of the plastic. Moral of the story: for now on I will use a red sharpie (on light colored discs, anyway).

I don't know what it is but it refuses to come off. Now to find the solution for orange and red discs

Update on the rubber stamp front. It seems there are some plastics, it wears the same as the Sharpie and others where it seemed to sink in some and is not fading at all. It only seems to be be fading a little on Champion plastic so far that I have noticed. All my other discs are looking great. I use my mid Discraft X-Elite Stratus and Gateway SSS and SS Magic putters on almost every hole and I play about 6-8 rounds a week. They still look as fresh as ever. I will keep giving you updates as I am seeing them change.

When I was doing silk screening the hardest colors to clean off the screen were Red and Yellow, they always seemed to leave a haze. It never occured to me that it might translate to sharpies.
