While playing Schaefer's DGC Wednesday, my disc rolled up to and landed squarely over a Prairie Dog hole. I look at the rules, and get confused. I don't want to mess with Nature, and I don't want to twist my ankle. From where do I throw? Do I call it an unplayable lie, and take a penalty stroke, even though I am in the middle of the fairway?

Not sure of the official call but since it's on the fairway I'd personally just shoot from behind the hole without a penalty stroke. Hell, if I'm just playing recreationally I never count penalty strokes anyway. Tromping through the woods, or wading into water looking for my disc or losing a disc is penalty enough:)

You can take a shot from as far away as 30 inches behind your disc. I think the only exception is if you are 30ft or less from the basket.

803.04: You must have one supporting point contacting the surface on the line of play within 30 centimeters behind the marker.

You could also take an unplayable lie, but that would cost a stroke.

What about 803.05C Is the hole part of the animal? Then I can take casual relief... I am sure glad I was playing for fun and could back up. But I just wondered about the real rule.

I sure am glad you didn't get bitten removing that prairie dogs new front door. If it was my hole I would have said, "Finders Keepers, get you own!" ;)
