Haven't seen a meet up thread for Ohio DGCR members yet.

I'm in NE OH, if anyone wants to get some rounds in up here or if you're from another area, let's get a meet going somewhere in the middle.

I currently hold travel tag 59 if anyone wants to trade as well.

I don't have a tag, but come on down to Mansfield for our Spring Fling 'n Wings and help me raise the funds to get a course in the ground!
Would love to meet you!

I'm down for something, hopefully we can get something going before RTS loses her license. Or we could play in C-bus where somebody could swing by and pick her up.

We'd need another tag to be able to set up a trade though, SmoothSailor and I have each other's tags already :hfive:

I dont usually visit some of these subforums but man, I need to start. Thats in 2 weeks. PM me details on what you might need help with. Hopefully I am not also moving that weekend. Do you have details posted somewhere for the event?

What we need is to schedule a huge meet for all of Ohio on down the line, but would be cool if a lot of us could show up for the Mansfield course fundraiser.

If we are going to do a big meet later I could definitely get a ride if it's somewhat close to Cbus.

Anyone have any ideas?

Do we want to just do one day, or find a place with camping really close by and make it a weekend thing?

Any suggestions on when? I would think late may or early June before it gets too hot and humid. Maybe plan it for early fall, September or something?

oh wow, didn't see this thread until now!

i would be very interested in an ohio meet. if someone sets a date/time, i recommend a date/time that is a month or two away so that people can really plan ahead and get the time free.

my vote would be Saturday, June 4th. there doesn't seem to be too many tournaments scheduled then.

a central location might pull the most people. deis hill? it's in the middle and it's a 5 star course

another idea is a free tournament. all us dgcr people throw a round from the blue (longest) tees, and we just post the results here. if i can get a babysitter, i could easily collect the cards and post them for bragging rights.

there'd be some crazy travel card swappin! and there's a crap ton of ohio disc golfers so prob a good turn out.

thoughts?

I like the 4th, but I don't know that Deis would be great for those travelling from the Southwest portion of the state, Dayton and Cincy, looks like it would be about a 4 hour drive.

September is a good month for disc golf in Ohio. Temps are moderate and the courses are dry and it gives everyone plenty of time to plan.

Having a place with camping an option but not a requirement would be a good idea for thos who have to drive a ways to make it more worth their while, but I don't think I would have to worry about it since I can get to about any spot in Ohio in less than 3 hours from where I live.

Brall
04-23-2011, 02:42 PM
waiting until september would definitely give everyone more time.

it may take quite a bit of time to agree on a course, but i know i'd certainly make a great effort to meet anywhere, although i prob wouldn't spend the night/camp. i'd prob show up early, meet everyone, throw a round, trade some tags, and split.

thx to smoothsailor for starting the thread

Very true. Course wise I'm sure we will come up with something, don't think the course matter as much as the meet, I was just thinking making it more centrally located might be better for everyone.

I looked up some info and as far as centrally located, with camping, Delware/Gordon Holton might be a good option. I've only played there a couple times, but its a nice course, and they just put in multiple tees last year. There are also two to three decent courses 20-25 minutes away.

Any other suggestions out there? I know Alum Creek has camping, but I think it's on the other side of the lake and Alum Creek is pretty tough, so any newcomers to the sport might find it a bit too much. Also Lancaster has a nice course from what I've heard and read in Flatrocks, which is also pretty close to the middle of the state.

Alum is VERY tight, it may be a little more open in a few years once a few of the trees get thinned out. Delaware was the only course Advanced played twice at Am Worlds, and for good reason. It was the best we played. Those of us on the west side of the state may have something to say about Deis being "centrally located". :p

Yeah I really don't know why they picked the courses they did for the AM Worlds. Definitely not some of the better ones in the state that's for sure.

That kind of what I was thinking about Deis as well. Its not bad for Cbus people or Northeast peeps, but southwest/west/northwest people might now think so. That being said I'm sure I could make it just about anywhere, even if I do have to get a ride, and am up to play just about any course.

I wouldn't mind meeting up for this, I have no bag tag.
One suggestion is Buck Creek, camping is close, it's a real nice course with a great view on the back 9 and the only downside, the tees aren't the best.

BUCK CREEK STATE PARK DGC - Springfield
Description: Beautiful park - front 13 wooded and technical. Back 6 open up with a beautiful view of lake and marina. Camping available 1 mile away. Course redisgned in Aug/Sept. 2009.

Directions: From Dayton OH - Take I-70 east to Rte. 40. Head North off exit, 2.5 miles to Bird Rd. Take right on Bird Rd and go 2.5 miles(turns into park). In park, turn right past park office to 1st left past Marina entrance. 1st tee at mouth of woods at 2nd parking lot on right.

Buck Creek is definitely coming together, and, imo, is a viable option. It would be great for all skill levels, but yes, some of the tees could use some work for sure (natural/dirt/gravel).

Suggestions so far:

Deis Hill (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2516)
Gordon Holton (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1319)
Buck Creek State Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2502)

Maybe we should get a few more ideas in the next couple days, and then get a poll going?

Also, as far as September goes, maybe the 10th & 11th. No tourney's in Ohio at all that weekend and nothing big in the surrounding states either. Anyone have thoughts on that?

Also wanted to say that I know Buck Creek and Gordon Holton, don't get a whole lot of traffic, more so for Buck Creek. What about Deis? Does it get crowded? I think choosing a less "popular" course might work to our advantage if we end up getting a decent showing.

Gordon Holton is about the same distance from Alum Creek and the course in Marion as Idlewild and Lincoln Ridge, 20-25 minutes.

Lancaster (Flat Rocks) and Pickerington aren't far from each other either. I've yet to make it to Lancaster but its in the top 5 or 10 in the state and Pickerington is pretty good. I don't know about camping or anything of that nature near either of those courses.

Here's some suggestions if we do go with a two or three course combo:

Deis Hill (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2516)/Arboretum-Spiker Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=188)/Lincoln Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=342)
Gordon Holton (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1319)/Alum Creek (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3690)/Brent Hambrick (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=131)
Buck Creek (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2502)/Handyman Ace Hardware DGC (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=4222)/Belmont Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1002)
Pickerington DGC (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3918)/Flat Rock DGC (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=60)/Hocking Peaks (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=4007)

Of course three courses would be pushing it, unless we decide to do a weekend thing and all courses are within 30 minutes of previous course. I also realize that a couple of those can get pretty crowded, Brent Hambrick and Belmont for example, especially on the weekends and may not be the best option if we end up getting a decent sized group of folks coming out.

Anyone else have suggestions for courses? Dates? One day event or weekend thing? Any other ideas?

roadtripstuff

Yeah Sawyer Ludwig just isn't that good. I mean its worth stopping by and checking it off your list, and its better than not having a course there, but I can't say I will be playing it again anytime soon.

thanks for letting me know about this thread, I'll be watching for sure, and try to meet up. I did already randomly meet smoothsailor though.

Pike Lake and Rocky Fork are located 25 minutes apart and have camping. Heard rumors of a course at Paint Creek which is also in the area, have not confirmed its existence. I agree autumn would be the best time to play. I believe September 9/10 is the weekend of the world wide DG tournament. Sounds dangerously fun to meet fellow DGenerates from Ohio.

Pike Lake is amazing, but I don't know if they are central enough to everyone. My parents actually live in Pike County, about 10 minutes from the course and even though I'm in Cbus now its still one of my favorites.

I've heard the same rumors about that course and Paint Creek and since I'm headed down that way today, I might try to check it out and see if I can find it.

Thoughts from anyone else? Should this combo be added to the list? I do know that there is camping and cabins at Pike Lake, but its also a pretty challenging course and very physically demanding.

So I guess the first thing we should decide is how we are going to do this. Should it just be a one day event? Or should we do Saturday and Sunday, getting campsite or something for everyone?

What do you guys think?

Smooth you want to get a poll up with these options:

1. Deis Hill (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2516)/Arboretum-Spiker Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=188)/Lincoln Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=342)

I was going to add Pike Lake and Rocky Fork, but the drive between the two is about 45 minutes and that might be a little much, especially if people are already driving from the north end of the state.

have lots to choose from!

tough choice between option 1 and 2 for me right now, as much as I love Lincoln Park and like Spiker, I dislike Deis, and it would be nice to play some new places. I haven't been down to the Columbus area yet. And I was told that if I like Roscoe and Lincoln, I would like Alum Creek.

I would prefer a 1 day trip, and early September probably, as i think a lot of tourneys are aiming for a late September time slot.

The first course in #2 is actually 55 minutes south of Mansfield and the rest are even further south if people want to keep that in mind Delaware is about 20-25 north of 270 and the other two are just minutes from 270.

Other than that, map looks good and I still have no idea which one I would vote for, they are all pretty good choices.

I would love a Buckeye outing.

All the options are sweet. I agree that we should keep it central. The two tandems I like are Pickerington & Flat Rocks and also Brent Hambrick & Lobdel Reserve. All 4 are well rounded and appoachable for all skill levels.

If we want a bit more challenge, then the Alum & Gordon option is sweet. Those two can be punishing.

Just MHO, but maybe we should consider having a gathering in all portions of Ohio over the years and spread the love that we all have for DGCR. I think if we choose different places to where we could all camp/ stay at a hotel for those who wish not to camp and have good times with each other then we're all be winners.

we're in the process of finally getting Portage Lakes State Park finished once and for all. If people camped at the state park there (close to Akron) we could arrange for DGCR people to play such and such courses in that area (for example we could play the Canton/ Massillin, Dover ,Wooster and Medina DGC other sections of ohio could promote their respective areas and play whatever DGC they have in their area that others would enjoy centralized around a area we're we al lcould camp and patronize within each other) and just have fun. I'd like to see everyone that plans to play to give a disc or a disc related prize (or a brand new car if you have those kind of connections) that they think would be a good prize from their stash and that they wouldn't never use to be put in the prize fund and try for everyone that has a DGCR tag recieve atleat one disc from some other DGCR tag member. I think if it was done that way and we rotated around Ohio we would build a great event, but more importantly we would promote OHIO tourism through DGCR.

tournaments turn off some people ( I personally like to play in the local tournaments as much as I can, but i'd much rather play casually and a bunch of differnt courses with friends (new and old) than being stuck all weekend playing one or two courses. That's one reason why I've played so many different DGC in all the states than playing in every tournament every weekend. Let's just have fun and with friends.

So one year we could play the Akron area, people who like to camp can stay at Portage lakes state park/ the other can use the hotel system or friends places then the next year we could do the C- bus area or the Dayton area or the Cincy area, Toledo area , another year play around Ashtabula/ cleveland area, another year we could play the DGC around Medina or something and so on.

Maybe this could get so big that a host club could promote through their respective tourism department and get some discounts for the DGCR travel tag members and promote their respective area including some cool 9 hole DGC in addtion with the more popular DGC in that respective area.

If we just concentrated on one area then we're losing a lot of the fun of traveling, trading DGCR tags, meeting new people and finding new DGC to play.

I'd suggest playing in the fall since that is one of the most beautiful times in Ohio and they'res less tournaments (for those who love playing in tournaments) and they'res less turbulent weather. It's still nice in Sept.

In doing a rotation we're not going to please everyone, but if we can please most of everyone and have fun in the process I think a rotation DGCR tags member weekend would be really cool to have and promote.

But if we do something like this, I feel we should have some kind of commitee and set a schedule so that everyone gets represented in some fashion. I've personally played all but 2 DGC in Ohio and would love to have other fellow Dgers feel the experiences I've had by playing as many differnet DGC in Ohio as I have and I feel we could if we had structure and feelowship to promote this in the correct way.

I'd volenteer to be on a board for Ohio DGCR weekend fun camp out/ or a close facsmile :D
For the people that carry travel tags get the perks and for those who don't carry travel tags they'll have to pay a little extra (not a whole lot, but enough to promote DGCR traveling tags within and all around Ohio.

Let's promote OHIO DG and DGCR within OHIO in the fall----------------------- - +

Any thoughts from what I just wrote??

Buck Creek is definitely coming together, and, imo, is a viable option. It would be great for all skill levels, but yes, some of the tees could use some work for sure (natural/dirt/gravel).

Suggestions so far:

Deis Hill (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2516)
Gordon Holton (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1319)
Buck Creek State Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2502)

Maybe we should get a few more ideas in the next couple days, and then get a poll going?

Also, as far as September goes, maybe the 10th & 11th. No tourney's in Ohio at all that weekend and nothing big in the surrounding states either. Anyone have thoughts on that?

That weekend there will be a tournament here I am TDing. Nothing organization but I have to be here and I want to be at the meet.

Smooth you want to get a poll up with these options:

1. Deis Hill (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2516)/Arboretum-Spiker Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=188)/Lincoln Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=342)
2. Gordon Holton (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1319)/Alum Creek (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3690)/Brent Hambrick (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=131)
3. Buck Creek (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2502)/Handyman Ace Hardware DGC (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=4222)/Belmont Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1002)
4. Pickerington DGC (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3918)/Flat Rock DGC (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=60)/Hocking Peaks (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=4007)
5. Brent Hambrick (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=131)/Lobdell Reserve (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=129)/Horns Hill (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3268)

These were the suggestions everyone was talking about. I don't know if you want to change the poll to reflect that or anything just thought I would throw it back out there. (I think the final list was on page 4,5, or 6)

I think more people were interested in playing multiple courses rather than just meeting up for one.

Also I think the Cincy guys wouldn't be able to make the weekend of the September 11. There is a tourney at Mt. Airy that's not listed and they wouldn't be coming if we have it that weekend.

I think we had talked about setting the date once the course was settled on. Maybe leave this poll up for a week or two, then pop one up for a date.

I think the first weekend in September is open. I maybe be going to Texas myself on the weekend of the 16th-18th for the Women's Tourney, but not 100% on that yet.

I think once we set the location, we drop this poll and put up one for the dates and once all that is decided we can put up an "Official" thread with all of the details, location(s), date(s), and list of attendees and what not.

If the voting continues the way it is, and #1 wins, I do suggest we play Hoover (Brent Hambrick) first/earliest because it does draw the crowds around here. That would also put up finishing up at Delaware which has a campground very close to the course, for those that are wanting to stay overnight.

As for tourney style, CTP, and all that, maybe we can decide that once we get the location and date decided. Maybe pick someone to head it all up, keep a list of the prizes and what not. I went to the Socal meetup and Snappyfingers was pretty much in charge and did a great job organizing everything. If #1 wins I would be glad to do that, and get the campsite that we would need, etc.

Welcome aboard. Glad to hear another person might be coming out for this.

So far we are thinking September, but we aren't sure on the exact date. I think we are going to leave the poll open for the location for a bit, then switch over and do a poll for the exact date.

Buck Creek was actually the main suggestion for that group, they have redesigned the course and its getting concrete tee pads next week.

If it ends up being number 1, I know there is camping, not far from the course, at Delaware State Park/Gordon Holton. Individual campsites are $28, but there are also group sites available that would end up being around $5.00 per person if there are at least 20 people, $1 or so more if there are less.

As for the local club, there are two for the courses in #1. Mood, for Gordon Holton and Columbus Flyers for Hoover/Brent Hambrick. The guys at Mood are all pretty cool, but some of the Flyers can be a little iffy, so I don't really want to deal with them, but that's up to you. Roscoe is one of those courses that could use some more exposure IMO but its just not a very central location. But if someone got real ambitious and started early, you probably could hit Roscoe, then go to Wooster for that course, then Lincoln Park, on over to Arboretum then down to Deis; but I hate to see what you would feel like climbing that last huge hill at Deis. lol

I'm down for this, I skimmed the 11 pages previous to this... I agree with doing central Ohio first, making it as close as possible to everyone the first time, then making rounds to all the other metropolitan areas...

As for dates, I know June 4th that someone said will be out for me, as that's the BHMO weekend... beginning of September will be good for me, the end not so much as my wedding is on Oct.1st, so ill be super busy leading up to that...

I know at a later one I'd like to incorporate the Great Blue Heron course in Norwalk Ohio, its an amazing course that is largely overlooked, and also gets so.little traffic that it'll be available all the.time...

I don't think we really got in-depth as to how we are going to play them, but a couple did say they would only be able to make it one day. I think what some people were thinking is try to get all three of the main ones done the first day (Saturday), time permitting, then whoever is staying for the second day (Sunday) could head to the other courses.

Of course that could all change once we get things narrowed down, maybe some of those folks will be able to make both days and we could go from there.

Attended Rio Grande College many moons ago and roomed with a guy who was a summer camp counselor in Hocking Hills somewhere. Anyway, we would take occassional roadtrips to "The Hills". One time we took a hike to what he called " Devils Toilet". It was a creek bed that dropped into a hole in the Earth. He climbed into the hole and beckoned us to follow. It was amazing when you climbed to the bottom of the hole and you were standing in a decent sized cavern. Will always remember the experience. Wish I could remember where that place was.

It's about a 3.5 hour drive to either and I dont' see myself waking up at 4 in the morning to meet up any earlier than 10 AM. So yeah I'm interested. Just not sure I'll fit in with the timeline and everyone elses schedule and geographical location considering i live in Michindiano.

So I take it you won't be at Ottawa Park Sunday to collect your winnings from the winter series? :CaptainObvioussmiley:

ATTENTION ALL!!!

Sound off if you're interested in getting a t-shirt at the meet up. Let me know what size you wear to make ordering easier.

They will be the dry fits like the shirts discraft has. they will be 14.00 each to order, so I say we all just go 15.00 for the shirts and put the extra dollar to payout the top 3.

Thoughts?

Of course. Seeing as how we all want to pay as little as possible, we could have one of us design it.

Up to 27, man if that many people come this should be great. If there's anyone out there that thinks they might be able to to make it, get your votes in, I think the poll is up until the 8th.

I think next up is the date. I hate to say it, but looking at the PDGA Events plus what others have mentioned September is looking pretty tight.

Without going back through the whole thread, I believe the only weekend that someone doesn't have going on is the last weekend of September. I think I recall the Vibram Open being the first weekend the 2nd-4th, and I also think there is a tournament at Mt. Airy in Cincinnati the weekend of the 9th-11th. I might have a tournament the following weekend, 17th and 19th, but I that's not 100% yet. Just thought I would throw all that info out there in one post and we could get the ball rolling on that discussion.

Anyone have any other ideas or questions or dates that won't work? I know we probably won't be able to work it out for every single person, but we can definitely try.

Roscoe has a way of making you feel like everything is wrong with your game, especially when the pins are in the longs. It can be a very demanding course, even though some holes look so simple. Last time I played there was the tourney the Jenkins ran in April, pins were long, and lots of OB markers were added, even though we played from the shorts it still played tough.

Technohic

Yeah Usually I gain a bunch of strokes on putting. They put them on the long and you get in the rough early, you pick up strokes quick. At least they didn't move 3 out on that little landing strip with a drop off a foot or 2 away on any side besides the left approaching area. That was rough.

Are we going to do a poll for the date? Or should we just try to pick a weekend that works best for everyone? I'm pretty sure the only weekend in September that someone doesn't have something going on is the last weekend, September 22-24th.

I would ask him to make it a multiple selection poll so everyone can select all the days that are good for them.

I like this idea as well. I think it would give us the best info to pick the date.

Since my home courses were selected I can take the lead on checking out camping/hotels and what not if everyone would like. I know both Alum Creek and Delaware have camping so I can check on pricing on individual sites and group camping if enough people choose to camp. Either way I can see if we can get a block of sites together for those of us that do decide to stay.

Of course all of this will depend on the dates selected.

One thing I will mention, albeit way a head of time, is that we should definitely play Brent Hambrick as early as possible to avoid the crowds. Weekends can get pretty bad, but as long as we make it the first stop, like around 11AM ish we should be fine.

1) Commitment

I'm a noob so my opinion probably doesn't count... But I do live in Ohio!

the first Day you could do a show & throw & for people that want some competitin do a tourney on the 2nd day...

having the central location for the 1st meetup sounds great & as mentioned earlier moce it to a diff. Part of Oh the following year (Akron... Then Dayton.. Then hocking hills.. Then toledo )(kinda what GOBA does)

the 3rd & 4th is part of Labor Day weekend... Be nice to go and camp and hang out as a positive... Back to school/summer ending family picnics etc... Are negatives... Although it would make it easier when next year rolls around... It's "labor day weekend"

also don't do "First annual"!

and does Cincy really count as part of Ohio?... Oh yeah (and no Steelers fans! Lol)

just a few thoughts,

Labor day, IMO, would be a BAD weekend. People do things with their families, I have a family camping trip every year over this weekend.

I agree that Labor Day Weekend would probably not be the best option. Not only will the courses be more crowded than usual, getting camp sites for those of us wanting to do the two day option might be hard to get.

I also hate "First Annual". Along with when people say assless chaps. Aren't all chaps assless? If they aren't assless, aren't they just pants?

Glacier is a great course for beginners, but can be a little meh once players start to get a little better. The wind can really be a beast out there though, adds a little challenge.

Alum Creek and Gordon Holton were designed by some of the same folks so if you like Alum you'll love Gordon Holton.

Oh and I figured out my issue, my domain name expired so I have to get it reset before I get any email. Explains alot. LOL

I highly recommend getting out to Delaware whenever you can, it's definitely a nice course and its immaculate shape right now since there was a tourney there this past weekend.

I don't know if you've been out to Pickerington yet or not, but that's another great course as well.

This is going to be the first ever Ohio meetup. I think the plan is to try to make the first one centralized and play new courses in a different part of the state each time.

When I go it's on a weekday because I work 10 minutes from the course but live about 50 minutes from it. I'll PM you next time I go.

Hey guys be sure to get your votes in I think we are closing down the voting at midnight tonight if no one objects. Here's the link to the dates poll (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36131), choose each day that you think you will be available. So far we've only had 14 people vote on the dates, I'd like to see a few more.

Just saw this thread. Been planning to meet up with a Columbus friend for some disc anyways, I'll read back and check the dates to see if I can make it. Subscribed to the thread so I can keep track from here on out.
