hey guys this is my first thread. I was hoping anyone could help me with building my own disc basket. Everything looks pretty easy but i need to know what type of chains... like what they are called, and what size, and how long the outer, intermediate, and inner chain lengths need to be. it would be very helpful thanks everybody...

I built one of these, and it works pretty good.

if you google "building a disc golf basket" you'll find loads of info...

this guy provides very comprehensive plans for sale (10 bucks) and his materials costs are anywhere from 50-80 bucks (depending on chains guage).

http://flyingdischunter.com/

chain is chain, what matters is the guage (thickness). the larger the guage the higher the price. but you're gonna need at least 30 feet of chain to get the 16 lengths for the outside ring of chains.

here's a link for some free instructions, but i can't speak to the quality like i can for the first link.

I actually bought a real basket on e-bay for 60 bucks plus 25 for shipping.

but it seems like the price went up a little since i bought mine 6 months ago.

hope this helps, enjoy

The PDGA technical specs for a basket are contained in this PDF:
http://pdga.com/documents/tech_standards/PDGATechStandards_08.pdf

From what I've read the cost of building your own basket can often rival that of some of the low end baskets like the InStep. My InStep basket cost $80 on ebay back in December '07. I've since modified it with the second set of chains per this post on the PDGA message board:

standard chain specification is 2/0 straight link.
raw material costs for the basket pictured above is about 150$ todays prices. labor hours to bend it and weld it up will be about 50 to 80 hours. the 150$ includes galvanize process for production lots of six.

A friend and I built some baskets. The total cost was about $20. We built 6 and set up a course on his property. Unless you are looking for perfection in a basket building something cheap can be done if you use your noodle.

Below is a picture. This basket works a lot better than it looks.

Do a search on homemade baskets. There are a lot of pictures, plans, and materials lists here. I found that the Innova site had tons of useful dimensions for their Pro basket that were really useful when I created my Frankenbasket:
