:(:(:(Soo.. i have broken my throwing hand this week. The doctor said he couldnt set it because it was too broke so i have to wait to go to orthapedic surgon for him to put pins in my hand... long story short its going to be like 6 weeks with no disc action for me.
any suggestions on how to keep from sucking when i can finally throw again?
otherwise all my free time will be wasted watching moovies and getting fat!! lol :mad:

I badly broke my hand in college. I also had to go to surgery, although I didn't require any pins.
Not to sound alarmist, but my hand has never been the same since, although it's close. It took almost two years before it wasn't randomly bothering me...throwing baseballs, swinging a hammer, things like that.
Make sure you tell your surgeon that you want/need to recover as quickly as possible because of sports, and they should hook you up with an aggressive (read: painful) set of physical therapy exercises. DO THEM. It's the only way to get back to full functionality and strength.
Good luck! :)
Edit: Also, just to reassure you, I did wait for over a week to go see the doctor for a compound fracture, so I had started to heal awkwardly, and I think that contributed somewhat to not fully regaining 100% strength/ function. Stupid high pain tolerance. :\

wow... what did you do to your hand? mine is a displaced 5th metacarple... right at the neck before the knuckle. Im not certain about needing pins or slicing yet.. i havent been to the specialist... im just chillin with a broke hand haha

i have a friend who broke his right arm (he is right handed) and he had to learn to play with his left hand. now the guy can throw 400+ right handed and 300+ left handed and is throwing both of them very accurate. It has all around improved his game

Let's just say it wasn't my most brilliant moment.
I had a compound fracture of the same bone, I think. The bone wasn't through the skin, but you could see where it was broken, and was bulging outwards in two places. I can't believe I waited a week before finally admitting it was broken.

You broken hand guys are lucky, upper extremity breaks heal way faster than lower extremity ones. My 5th metatarsal spiral fracture took forever to heal and I didn't need surgery or setting. It still feels kind of iffy some days and I broke it in November. :\

Star Shark is right. It's the foot bone behind your pinky toe. Lol, I broke it by rolling my ankle in basketball class. The funny part is I just jumped for a rebound and for some dumb reason I didn't come down on that foot right and just rolled it under me. I thought I had a severely sprained ankle but after the swelling went down and I couldn't put weight on that particular spot I knew something was amiss. Had to wear a velcro walking boot for 2 months.

Actually throwing with your non dominant side is good advice if you must feed your DG addiction. I do not know how feasible this is in your condition, but, if you use proper form it could be beneficial to your game. Lately, I've been trying to convert from muscling my drives to using proper x step, reach back, follow through, and snap to add distance to my drives and find my dominant side is flawed with years of bad technique. Occasionally I will practice good technique with my non dominant side and even though my distance and accuracy suffers, the proper technique side of it feels smoother. Feels quite a bit different but it's easier to not muscle the throw. It's weird, the x step feels smoother from non dominant side also. Lack of muscle memory I reckon.

yeah i get the bone set tomorrow, and i already had put in a request off work to play in a tournament on sunday. Well that is obviously not going to be an option, but i think i will get out and play some lefty on sunday. Ill probly just take my buzzz and my dart,,, cause honestly ive never even thrown with my left hand haha

I broke mine when I was a Junior in high school while throwing discus, yes I broke it from spinning in a circle. Was in a caste for about a month and then in a boot for another 1.5-2months. It still gives me problems sometimes :(. They didn't do surgery or anything and had them do x-rays about 2 years ago and they said while the bone didn't heal the scar tissue that is there is just as strong as the bone or something along those line. Hopefully you will heal better :hfive:.
Ironically the VERY first day I wasn't wearing the boot on my foot was the first day I played disc golf. So if some way the broken foot led me to disc golf then I am grateful :D.
With a broken hand I would def. just work on throwing with my off hand if it doesn't hurt the hand that is broken. I know a lefty in Hickory that throws with both arms and has aces with each.

Activated (by sunlight) Vitamin D is essential for Calcium absorption.. otherwise the Calcium will go right through your system. Fun fact: drinking too much Vitamin D-fortified milk in very sunny regions (e.g. Florida) can lead to Calcium intoxication.. symptoms include psychotic fits. So just don't overdo it. ;)

I hear ya on hitting crap.
Trashed my right hand punch one of those 50g steel trash cans, the next night trashed my left hitting a 4x6 that was supporting a porch roof. Had a spatula ace bandaged to my left hand and tongs on the right for work... Talk about stupidity at its finest.
Def go out and throw with your left. Will give you a whole new perspective on lines and holes.
Good luck with the surgery and recovery man.
Till then what discs you want to get rid off... :D

Dude, I rolled my right ankle so bad I nearly vomited. That shizz HURT like a mofo. I couldnt play didge for awhile. My ankle will never feel the same and I have adapted my x-step to be aware not to roll it again. I am thinking about getting a good pair of Merrell gore-tex mids for some ankle support or:
I wonder if I should get a pair of those Vibram 5fingers. My buddy down in FL used to play alot of soccer and his ankles rolled easily. In fact, he even rolled it while we were playing didge up at Richmond Hill in Asheville. He rolled it so bad that we couldnt even finish the back 9. He said after he rolled it, "Man... if I had my 5fings on, I wouldnt have rolled it." He didnt even step in a hole or anything. He was on a flat surface.

There is a silver lining here... throwing with your off-hand will be awkward at first but you will pick it up and may actually incorporate it into your overall game once your throwing hand heals up

honestly man you gotta give lefty a try. three months into playing i broke my right wrist and loved the game so much started throwing lefty and havent looked back. the weird thing is i still putt right handed. i very occasionaly drive right handed but thats only because my wrist healed wrong and it hurts to much when i generate the needed snap. Lefty is definitely weird at first but you can get used to it. my third hole of my first lefty round was a black ace. just give it a try and who knows you might be surprised if you stick with it

Stepped in a tiny hole and rolled my ankle a while back, probably the 3rd or 4th time while playing dg,usually i was able to get up and walk it off,but this one knocked the breath out of me,wanted to puke so badly. Thank god it was on hole 10 which is next to 18's bench, sat there while my friends finished the round, didn't play for a few,was horrible :(

Yeah that's funny how you mentioned you were near enough to the "halfway point" in the course where you could just skip the back nine and hobble to your car:
Reedy Creek is set up like that and I rolled (almost broke!) my ankle on the end of #8's teepad. Reedy Creek is the oldest one here in the QC so it has some major erosion in spots. Well, the end of the teepad on #8 is eroded away so much that is had like a 9 inch drop off. Well I threw my disc (which I still had my eyes on as I watched it glide) and stepped down off of the end and heard an EVIL noise in my ankle as it released the demons of pain!... Okay, so I'm exaggerating. But trust me, that junk was painful. I had to hobble back to the car, which is near the basket for #9.
I had some pretty bad internal bleeding in my ankle and the pain made me about d*mn near puke. I havnt made that same mistake since (<knocks on wood)....:(

I don't have any good broken bone stories, but to get back to the original topic, I'm a wuss and won't play in the winter. This year was particularly brutal in New England. My last round of the season was Thanksgiving weekend and I didn't play again until April.
I used the time off to focus on getting my mind and body in shape. I went to the gym to work on getting my arms and core in shape. I thought about disc golf a lot. I reflected back on the season for things that went well and things that went poorly. It helped me refocus so that when the weather got warm again, I was ready to go. I had a good practice and tournament prep strategy that I didn't have at the end of last year.
