Hey all, just wanted to update you with an event I am putting together.
In late July, or early August, I will be running a tournament at the Parma Disc Golf Course called "Progress At Parma." It is going to be a unique tournament, with 100% of the registration fees being donated to The University Of Rochester Thomas P. Wilmot Cancer Center.
In place of a cash payout or solely plastic payout, I have contacted several companies who are willing to donate disc golf products to this event. Also, I have received some very generous cash donations from family and friends. 50% of donations from family and friends will be added to the donation to the cancer center, and the other 50% will be used to purchase supplies for the tournament, advertise it, and purchase more prizes for the winners of the tournament. In respects to donations for prizes, this is shaping up to be a pretty promising event.
I am doing this for many reasons. I recently had a family member be 100% cleared of her cancer, and it felt like a weight was lifted off our families shoulders. I know the majority of families also aren't that lucky. I think a group of disc golfers getting together and playing disc golf to help fight cancer is an amazing thing. This also will shine a great light on disc golf in general. I know our local News tends to cover events such as this, and I am in the works of contacting them to get a short TV spot on the Rochester news during the event. Thousands of people will be tuned in and see a sport that maybe they had no idea existed, and they are going to see the members of that sport working together and playing together for a great cause such as research on cancer. Any amount of money donated to research is a step in the right direction, and I feel that this could definitely be a step in the right direction in regards to disc golf being exposed to more people.
As more and more details are ironed out, and as I receive donations, I will absolutely keep you all at DGCR updated. Thanks for takin' the time to read.
(By the way, sorry about the double post. I realized I accidentally posted it in the Water Cooler. Tim, can you fix my mistake and delete the WC post?:p)
