View Full Version : Basket at Costco...

So my wife saw a basket up high on a shelf at Costco, near the tents. It was assembled and all metal. No price or info listed anywhere that she could see. I just showed her a pic of the Innova one and she said it may have been that one.

Anyone seen a basket at Costco before?

If it was all metal is wasn't a halex. Damn those halex ones, the metal cage chew through putters in a hurry while the plastic chains spit em out.

I got an email with a product photo from Stork a month ago regarding a target his daughter saw being sold for $54.99 at Costco. Was an InStep.

Yes costco has a disc golf basket its all metal in a day glow yellow/green color. Actual metal chains and everything. Even come with a flag on top of it. Very light and portable. It has the quick relases like mach lights to take the pins out of it. It's made by seattle sports and nope you can not find out anything on them from google. It runs about $65 which is dirt cheal for an all metal basket. The chains hang from the top on circle loops. You could take a pair of pliers and close the chain. Can't beat the $ for this basket.

I'm going to buy one tonight. It's an Instep basket w/ (3) disc (http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-InSTEP-Disc-Golf-Basket-Target-Goal-3-Discs-DG200-/350420755261) and at my Costco, it's 65.00!

OK
Here's the skinny:
Not all costco stores stock them and they're not anywhere on costco's website.
They look exactly like instep baskets but are likely either re-branded or very similar

if you call your local costco they might be able to find another local store that has them...if they don't

You should just call your local costco first...otherwise you'll just be wandering around in the costco labyrinth.

Couple quick questions for ya guys on these...

Are the chains of decent quality?
What about the metal basket, base, and top? Cheap welds like Innova Sport?

Just wondering cause I'm building homemade baskets and 18-24 sets of chains per basket is running me near $40 (little under $1 per foot) alone for the decent stuff. For $65 new, it's almost better to get these instead.

EL-KABONG
06-14-2011, 03:03 PM
I would say everything on these including chains and welds are light to medium duty/quality. The chains seem decent but having only bought this yesterday, can't tell you much else about them.

I am sure these are instep baskets so if you know what the chains are like on those; bingo.

Here's a older set of reviews of the instep

From what I understand, if you have a Costco gift card you don't have to be a member. So find a buddy with a membership (me) :)

Give him 100+ dollars to buy you a gift card with that you know your gonna use, and save the yearly membership fee.

I have an Instep that I got six or so years ago, and when I got it I added an extra set of inner chains in between every outer chain. The basket has held up well. I had one weld break on the base during moving the basket a few years ago, fixed it and it is still great. Not to brag, but with 14 outer and 14 inner chains it catches anything thrown within the city limits. Spit outs are maybe 1 out of 200 and blow throughs never happen. I had to give $75 for mine and about another $45 for the chains and the dude to weld it. It was and still is a great deal for the money. Without the inner chains though, you will likely be a little disappointed.

I have an instep basket. I re-attached every other chain to the inside ring at the top and it catches much better without the high shot spit outs I was getting before the modification. If you don't want to add extra chains, this is a good option. I won't add them now. It's working fine for me.

Can't you just give them the item number and have them ship it from a store or warehouse that does have them? If one store carries it, then the entire chain can GET the item. It's a wholesale Wal-Mart, same company essentially. But, I don't see why if the chain sells item, why they can't have the item number sent to the store of your choosing like Wal-Mart.

Got mine yesterday at the Irvine, CA Costco, $64.99. Ending up at $70 and change after tax (8.75%), it's a savings of around $30 when you figure in shipping from online retailers. This location started with a stock of 10 and there were 7 remaining after my purchase.

I have the same setup and frankly I hate it. It catches so well that you get over confident and then go out to the real course and suck eggs because everything flies out.

I wouldn't add the 2nd layer, it may be frustrating with the blow throughs and chain-outs but trust me, your game will thank you.

I also used zip ties to cinch my chains up and in about 2 links, gives a smaller catching area because stock is obscenely large.

for what it's worth, the girl that I talked to when I called to check for availability told me that the basket sets had only been on the floor for 3 days, and it looks as though everyone that has posted about them has been on the left coast, so these sets may be in the back of trucks heading eastbound as we speak.. err, type and read...

I picked one up today in Bolingbrook, IL. I ended up calling my local Costco which didn't have it of course and asked them to look up the item #631310 and she told me that about 10 stores in my area had about 30 on average as of this afternoon but they wouldn't be able to ship it to my local store.

When I picked mine up I had to go searching for it and finally asked and nobody seemed to know where it was. Finally the manager said that they placed it at the back of the store because that is the area where they put stock that isn't being sold and trying to attract customers. As of now in the Chicago area these aren't flying off the shelves and I might wait another week and see when they drop the price again.

When I called they listed the number of units available at each store. Each store was well stocked. If you have to travel far call ahead and they might plenty available so you might not need to rush out but it also depends on what your local scene is like, if you think there is gonna be a run on them use your own best judgement when to pounce. I have a feeling they're will be a price drop on these in the Chicago area, they are not moving right now. Gonna wait a week and get another for even less.

you guys need to check out www.vminnovations.com...type in "dg200" or frisbee golf basket in the search window...put it in your cart type in "facebook" in the offers window and get one for like $71.00...free shipping. I called instep and they stopped production of these baskets a few years ago. the company making them is called pacific outdoors i believe....great deal!! it goes together soo easily and tears back down easily....adding an inner set of chains makes a world of difference....get one while they last!!!

Just tried this, the total came up as $84.50 with free shipping. Worse deal than both Costco and Ebay.

I would call them back and have them check for the closest store with it. I had to literally push this with the people I talked to on the phone and after a minute I had a list of all the stores. Granted there are many Costco's in my area but I wouldn't just stop at what they tell you, dig it out of them for info, they may end up telling you something that they didn't at first and you might be able to call a friend to pick it up if it's close to were they live. Just a suggestion, as I found them to be evasive at first and kinda felt shutout until I pushed them for more info. Good Luck

i have a couple pitch and putts less than 5 min from my place, so i just use those. it'd just be so nice to walk out my door and practice for 20 min here and there. i don't think the neighbors would be too found of it either

Talk to the local Costco manager, they maybe able to order them for you. I could never find it listed at the Costco website or at my local Costcos. product #631310 at Costco on 138th Ave. in Portland. Probably at least 20 still in stock. Easily located in outdoor section, not high up on a shelf.
Was only $69!

I picked up my Costco basket in Bolingbrook about a month ago, and opened it for Father's Day. Just set it up yesterday. So far, I'm fairly pleased (was like magic at first - hit eleven in a row from a range where I'm usually 6.5/10). Nice that it's all metal - seems relatively sturdy. Only a little punch through - if it persists perhaps I'll try reattaching some of the chains to the inner ring. Not quite the "chains" sound that I'm used to, but a pleasing enough "ching" sounds sort of like an old fashioned cash register.

How have they held up over time for people? Do you leave it out in the rain? I'd consider getting a cover for it, but i suppose the baskets sit out on the course in all weather...

Don't buy this basket! You will spend more time sewing it back together than you do putting on it. And it doesn't catch very well. I got mine for $17.50 plus tax and I feel like I might have over paid.

My wife took a picture of this basket at Costco today. Some of you were refering to item #631310, which this is labeled as, but this one is by Park & Sun. There are some differences that I can see between this and the InStep basket. Does anyone know about this basket? Is it as good (cheap but usable) as the InStep basket? I am concerned that the pole attaches to the base by only 3 bars and not 5, like the InStep.

I have the one in the pic in my backyard. It was a nice Father's Day gift from the wife.

Although I have not seen an Instep in person, these are different according to the pics I found via a google search.

I will eventually replace/add chains. Other than that, I think it's worth the price. My costco was selling them for 69.99. They are out and not sure if they will be getting more or not.

Just got back from our Portland Oregon trip and I grabbed one in Kirkland Washington on our way home .

Yup , it's cheaply constructed and inexpensive at $70.

Fabbing up another 3 1/4" spacer to raise the crown so the chains hang freely instead of sitting in the basket . And I'm prolly gonna add inner chains .

I can see in the future replacing the base with a heavier/beefier one and will prolly make a better pole for it.

I'm sure I'll try to make a complete basket when rain season hits , but I really need to learn how to putt before the next tourney in September .

I'm excited to have a secret weapon in the back yard !

I went back to Costco today and they only had the display model left. I picked it up for $45 and it is probably as good as new. I would have bought a few for that price.

Even with only one set of chains it seems to catch pretty well. I practiced on it a bit earlier and only had one blow through from 25'.

If it's the same design as the original InStep, you might have the top and bottom poles swapped. I did that the first time I assembled my InStep and the chains touched the bottom of the cage.

The 'Costco' basket is the standard Instep basket although mine is red color (I like your yellow/green/orange!). These baskets are all over the internet with prices starting at about $75.00 (which is what I paid for mine on eBay). There are many threads about this basket (mostly about adding chains). Here's mine when I first got it:
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk270/jdubent08/misc%20DG/P1010005.jpg?t=1288816200
You can see in the pictures that it's pretty well made. The metal frame is a little smaller wire diameter than an Innova DisCatcher & the chains are smaller size but it has some good welds & is pretty sturdy! It catches discs & seems like it's closer to regulation than the Traveler & other portable baskets Innova sells.
When I went to Home Depot/Lowe's for added chains they did not have the same size in stock. I bought a slightly larger size for my added chains. Chain by the link is not exactly cheap & it ended up costing me about $30-35.00 if I remember right. Here's my basket with the added chains:
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk270/jdubent08/misc%20DG/instepwithchains.jpg?t=1347307399
While I will say that when I first got the basket I would practice putting almost every day. It's very easy to set up & not overly heavy to throw into the back of my car & take to work or whatever. I would say that it helped my putting to some extent. But I get bored easily & over time it doesnt get out much anymore. I will bring it out from time to time for tourny's where we need an extra pin position, etc. but it mostly sits in my garage now collecting dust. With all this talk about it maybe I'll take her out for a spin soon!

I bought the park and sun one from Costco after a day when I missed 15 putts from 15 feet. I had just started playing and needed to improve my putting bad and this was a great fix. For $60 buck I got to increase my putting ability to the point that I'm around 80% from the circle now. They are a great investment when you are starting out and it can take 15 footers all day. As soon as I started getting a little heat on my putts I had to add an inner row of chains to avoid blow throughs (6 chains at 20 inches in length, 12 S-hooks and some channel locks did the trick (search for a thread called home basket upgrade that I started there is a guy that told me how to do it)), and now that I am hitting the longer putts the basket is falling apart and the pole is bending. (I actually just ordered a disc nation liberty basket today.) the dimensions on The basket dimensions are off, and it is not welded very well. But that being said I would recommend the basket to anyone who is just starting or only wants to practice at home 20 minutes or so a week. Any more then that and you should just spend the extra $100 or so to get a better basket.

I bought my Park and Sun on clearance for $35 at Costco last year, they marked them down when they only had a few left.

They are a little flimsy and the bolt holding the top of mine stripped from being taken apart too much (five times lol).

I replaced the bolt with a higher grade and welded it all together. It is very sturdy now, hasnt bent or anything. That is with hauling it in my truck to league at least ten times and putting on it daily for almost a year.

My friend's wife works at Costco and bought one of these for him. Anyone mind sharing what length you use for the inner and outer chains? Did they cut the lengths of it for you or did you use your own tools? What tool did you use? How do you keep the inner set of chains from moving? Zip ties?

We do not have access to much beyond your standard toolbox of drivers, wrenches, files and whatnot. It would help if home depot or w/e would be doing the chain cutting. Ty in advance.

edit - I found the chain gauge is 2/0 straight link coil, but I would like lengths.

broke mine in under a year. never lifted/ leaned/ pushed/ pulled/ on the basket and it went from bent and crooked to broken welds. also doesn't catch very well.. i never bothered to add chains because it makes it more challenging but i've noticed i have to change my putting style if i wanna make em stick, which doesn't help me on the course. i banged 20 foot shots in my room all winter, and i dont miss those anymore so i guess theres some benefit, but ill say its a total relief putting at professional baskets when im playing a round.

A buddy of mine just got one, so I helped him fixt it.
I don't know the length of the chains
I made a bigger ring for the chains to attach to
Removed 2 links off of all the outer chains (use these to attach the new chains)
Then added 6 inner chains

It works well (for a $69 basket, plus his kids got 3 discs)

I don't know if they're the same all the way across the board, but mine is the one with the orange chain ring and bucket with the black poles and stand. The brand is Park and Sun Sports.

The plus side is that mine caught pretty well out of the box, much better than an InStep. Still, I added a second ring of chains to the inside with ease (and $15) and it is now just as good as the real thing. It's a pretty good basket.

The negatives are that it is a little fragile where it screws together at the bucket and stand. The problem is that the threaded holes the bolts coming out of the posts screw into are just in a metal plate about 1/8" thick, where it should have been an actual nut welded on the inside. All it takes is for someone to lean on it or try to tighten it too much and the threads stripped out. I fixed mine by knocking out the two bolts that came in it and dropping a thicker, coarser threaded rod through it and used locking nuts to hold that in place. Then I used a tap to cut new threads in the base and other pole for the rod to thread into. That works much better than the original, but I'm also careful to not let anyone else put it together or take it apart.

Aside from that problem, it's a very sturdy, good catching, good looking basket.

Yours has threaded bolts? Mine has pins that slip through the holes.

Do you leave yours outside? Why even use the bolts? The weight of the basket will keep everything together.

I have two of these. I have also added a second ring of chains and outside of the top inch or two under the chainring mine catch as well as any premium basket. If you hit too high the disc just bounces off because the chains do not have a sliding attachment point at the top like the course install baskets do. I do have the same problem with the bolts stripping and if you could post some pictures of how you fixed yours that would be awesome. I was just going to weld mine to be permanently assembled.

i had one of the bolts kinda strip the threads on the 1/8" plate
so i just put a nut on it also
and had to re-weld a spot on the foot hoop

once you add the 6 inner chains they catch great

just remember its a $69 basket (with 3 crappy discs) not a $200 basket

fondled the display a little at the local Costco (where they had lots in stock) and did not seem that bad at ALL for the price. Chains would be super easy and cheap to add, the metal can be reinforced without issues and over-all good enough IMO to be a superb practice basket but not made out of tent material and half the price.

Winner.

I just went and got another for myself. I had one last year and this years model has been improved.
The mfgr. put in thicker bolts that have a coarser thread (this is a good thing) and made the threaded plate that they go into thicker and tapered. They've also included 4 washers to reduce the chances of seizing and stripping.

UCF Knight
a: I used a hammer to knock the two stripped bolts on the post back inside of it and just left them there (yes, they rattle a bit when you're putting it together, but they don't matter when you play)
b: I went to the hardware store and bought a 25" threaded rod ($3) that was a little thicker and had coarser threads than the original bolts, as well as two low profile lock-nuts (35) that fit the rod. I also picked up some washers large enough to overlap the diameter of the posts (25)
c: I already had a tap, but if you don't, buy a tap that cuts the same size threads as the threaded rod. ($6-8)
d: Use the tap to recut the threads in the stand and in the upper post.
e: slide the threaded rod through the post you knocked the bolts inside of and tighten on the low profile lock nuts until the rod is even and tightly secure.

Now, it's as good as new... in fact, it's better because I know it's not going to happen again.

Again, the new one I just bought shouldn't have this same problem.
