Sorry if this topic exists already, but I couldn't find it.
I was hitting a brick wall trying to get a nice, super visible (and easy to find) hot pink or neon pink dye for my discs. I'm not currently too interested in making them look cool, just don't want to have to spend an hour looking for discs every time I play the local courses.
The recent batches of RIT dye seem to be unable to dye plastic and the Fuchsia Rit was a complete failure. So, I had remembered reading that some people had used fishing lure dye to get good bright colors and I had to try it.
Bought some Hot Pink SpikeIt brand "Dip-N-Glo" fishing lure dye. It was just over $5 for a 2oz. bottle at the local Bass-Pro Shop. Now, you have to be careful when you get it, because the normal lure dye is garlic scented. You definitely will want the Unscented variety. Sure, that strong garlic smell will help to keep the vampires from stealing you discs that fly out of sight, but you don't want your disc bag to smell like a Turkish restaurant, do you?
I gave it my first go this afternoon on a clear plastic Champion Spider.
I had no experience with it, so I just took my best shot at how to apply it. I decided on using a fine bristled, small, flat paint brush to dip in the bottle and brush it on to the disc. I went top and bottom with it, brushing from the middle towards the edge and then cleaning up the rim by lightly circling the disc with the brush.
The SpikeIt must have had acetone in it, because it almost immediately began to disolve the Innova stamp on the disc and the dye seems to dry out after a few minutes on the disc.
I kept brushing until I thought it looked just about right and let it dry out. It dried looking very streaked (from the brush) and splotchy (anywhere that it had run or been touched by my rubber gloves) and I thought it was going to be a mess. I then stuck it under some warm running water (which didn't rinse it at all) and pulled out some dish soap and a little green scrubby pad and started scrubbing off all the thick, dried up pink residue off the surface of the disc. It eventually all came off and this is what I ended up with.

Damn! I played with it a few hours later. Nothing came off on my hands and it is very, very easy to see on the course. There are a few very light streaks from the brush still in there, but you have to look hard to see them. I think next time, I'm going to find a good plate to fill with the dye and then float the top of the disc on it, then fill the inside - instead of brushing.

That's pretty sweet! What other colors do they have? How much of the 2 oz bottle did you have left after you were done? Might be expensive, and reserved only for personal discs...otherwise I'd have to charge a premium for it, lol.

Here's a link to the colors: http://www.ispikeit.com/Store/p-150-dip-n-glo-lure-dye-unscented.aspx
I have 2/3rds of the bottle left at this point. It dries out once you spread it thin, so it's not nearly as economical as Rit.
I just realized that I did not yet test "SpikeIt's" claim that this dye is truly florescent... yup, it is!
This is under a black light:

Of course, you can't take a great photograph in a black light, but I think this speaks for itself. REALLY BRIGHT!

I might have to hit Bass Pro next time I'm near one, I think there is one in Denver, might try to find it locally. Still seems pricey, but would definetely be cool for highlights where I wouldn't need to do the whole disc.. and the garlic would just be a bonus! :D

I agree with Fishy. A whole disc at that price per bottle seems a little much, but using it for highlights and such on other dyes sounds good.
If it does contain acetone already it should make highlights really easy. Just have to be careful getting it off.
I wonder if it can be mixed in with some Rit?

I'd worry about mixing it with rit, but I wonder if you can effectively water it down at all, since it'd be great to reduce the evaporation rate. If it is just part acetone water should work fine, but I'd want to see the ingredients first.

There are NO ingredients given anywhere on the bottle or package.
The disc was originally clear.
I only used 1/3 of the bottle to paint the Spider.
I suppose you could find it at a regular bait and tackle store, I found several around my home town who carried it. They mostly were either only carrying one of the scented varieties or were out of Hot Pink at the time, but they might actually have it. You won't know until you call.
I tried it on the underneath of a Star Plastic disc that I have dyed Sunshine Orange with Rit. It took just fine, but it was really splotchy. It still glows under the black light on the star however.
I obviously need to improve the delivery method and the method for removing the dried excess when done.
Thanks for the nice comments.

Guess I ought to also mention that this stuff is really, really permanent and kinda messy.
Use rubber gloves ugly old clothes and a big drop cloth in an area where it's OK to have small drops of color on things. It seems to splatter at the slightest touch.
I make it sound bad, but it was actually not that big of a deal because I took precautions.

Yeah, seems like it would be worth trying to stretch it out with additional solvent(h20, even), and let you use(and REuse) it in more of a traditional dip method. It does sound really cool if it's "paintable" right out of the container, too.
How viscous is it? Would it work for a spin dye, or is it more runny than that?

lol, once I get some if it's unscented I'll probably be able to tell what kind of solvent they used by the smell of the dye itself.. one of the few benefits of being a painter and working with a lot of different solvents over the years. :gross:

THERE ARE UNSCENTED COLORS AVAILABLE! Jeesh (I think you're joking about the garlic, right?)
It is way to runny for spin dyes... in the traditional sense. I've never done one, just watched a few videos on spin techniques, but It is really thin and runs fast.
I did find, that I overlooked a sentence on the back of the package that says, "Contains acetone, keep away from heat and flame." So, that's the solvent, like I suspected when it immediately dissolved the stamp.
I don't think it will do much for dyeing darker colors, but it WILL make them glow in a black light.

Maybe if you make stinky discs you could throw them farther by just trying to get away from the smell.

lol.. I know whats going in the DiscPass and what my Secret santa is getting this July! :D actually if it's like every other fishing scent I've ever used the garlic wears off in a day or 2 when exposed to the air, unless they have made huge strides in scent technology? I have my doubts about if it will dye and glow for long, so I will most likely use it for it's intended use... getting even with the neighbors next time they take my parking space! :p

I experimented with the SpikeIt dye on a white DX disc last night.
As with Rit, it was a failure. The dye just smeared around on the plastic, eventually dried up and, when I went to scrub the dried residue off (like I did with the pink Champ Spider), the disc was still white with only a couple of spots that had a very faint tint.
Oh well, I guess there just isn't any hope for DX. I think it must have something to do with the "waxiness" of the plastic.

Oh my god, I thought you were kidding about using the Garlic scented. WHY?
Again, for everyone else, THIS COMES IN UNSCENTED.
It works really well, especially on the Champion Innova plastic, even though it takes off the stamps. Look at the first page of this topic for an example of results. I also have seen another guys work, on these forums, where he uses the SpikeIt for colors on his artistic disc dyeing (where as my dyeing is just for visibility). I can't remember which topic, but his disc had a brightly colored bird on it.

:p because I seriously doubt the glow will stay and I'll use it for fishing.. besides if it does work, I got friends who want some.. as potent as that **** is no way you can lose a disc if one is sprayed. :D and no way is someone gonna keep one of their discs if it reeks of garlic

The most recent dye with the Hot Pink SpikeIt dye.
It's on a Champion SL (kinda rare)
I used the normal vinyl to try to mask off the Innova Protostar design but the acetone in the SpikeIt must be pretty strong because the vinyl peeled right off and became the consistency of a rubber ballo0n.

Can you dye black rit on top of this ? Or is there to much acetone in it to hold vinyl now? Because if you could use this pink as a background color that would be cool.

I haven't actually tried to dye it with RIT following the process. I thought about working up something to dye on the first one I did, but I couldn't fine any black or dark blue RIT in town that didn't have the 11 at the end of the serial number.
The vinyl seems to stick to it just fine still and the surface feels exactly as it did before I started. Can't think of any reason you couldn't do a design and other colors on top of it.
This time (the disc above) I decided to brush instead of float. The last time, the normal, small paint brush worked OK, but seemed to leave a hint of brush strokes. This time I used one of the small edger brushes like this:
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTHcflHBO17oCxHRTS8ToAOKIkCdOjRl vmFetVg6v25eEwTYiAO7A
That was just about perfect and I ended up using less of the dye than before. Came out very smooth and even.:)

I've been thinking of using this product to dye some clear uncolored x-outs so they are easier to see.

Has anyone experienced any rub off on to other discs?
Does anyone have some picture examples of discs dyed in the various colors available?

With almost any dye there is the chance of dye transfer to another disc, especially if they are put in your bag dome to dome in warmer climates.
if you put you discs in the same direction however you wont have that issue.
I can confirm the hot pink looks like the color displayed in one of the above posts. This is actually a fantastic color, and takes extremely fast. i was able to use a paint brush and sign my name on a test disc and wipe off the excess 20 seconds later with true color.
i also tryed the bright green color and found it slightly duller and much closer to hex color
