View Full Version : Courses that make you relieved you shot 8 over

Basically just post courses where you shoot way over and feel like you had a solid round; and left grateful you had all of your discs still.
My example is Leigh Farms because I played from the Advanced Gold tees for the first time today and every basket was in the long position. I finished up with a 68 (7+) and honestly I felt happy to get that. It took some insanely skilled (lucky) second shots out of deep woods to keep me close to par on some holes.
4 for instance has some of the thickest stuff I've ever seen on a course right next to the fairway (road). I felt like an idiot for going in it because my first drive went about 350 and landed right off the road. I threw my wraith next for kicks, I kinda tripped up and ended up throwing my wraith extremely nose up so it just went right in to the crazy stuff. took me a good 20 minutes to find it.
7 requires you to play up on a mound. if you miss the fairway and mound you end up on the side of the mound which is crazy unstable terrain covered in crazy long grass. Luckily my disc was easy to spot.
On 9 I threw my tee shot off to the right in to the woods, I played out and back on to the mound and couldn't find my disc for a bit.
A good number of the wooded holes have random trees sprinkled in the fairway, its honestly a matter of luck for anyone who isn't amazingly accurate. It's like DB's on steroids in some spots.
I know the course is a work in progress but the place could use a serious makeover in that some underbrush could be cleared out. I might hit the peoples up running it and ask when the next time they are going out and working on it.
Having said all of that I think the layout is pretty well devised for the advanced tees. The Rec course is just bad and dangerous because people on either of the courses could easily smack you with a disc while you're out there. The advanced course is a real challenge though, it humbled me.

Shot a couple down at Blue Ribbon Pines (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1022) a few weeks ago. I still get excited whenever I'm within 3-5 of par.

Nockamixon is an insane name for a course. DGCR has the average score at 85... 21 over. Holy Crap I think that course takes the cake. Anyone have any courses where the average score is more than 21 over. I wish the search field would allow you to search for average score.

Every course Ive ever played
Seriously though, WilCo in Leander, TX.
Played it for the first time on Monday, and I wish it was my home course because my game would be so much better. 600ft blind teeshots through some of the most dense woods, left to right all day. Here's a quick summary of that round. First shot - Thwack. Second shot - thwack into the woods. Third shot - thumb roller 30 feet back into the fairway. 4th shot - thwack, but at least I made it within 200 feet. 2 putt. Repeat x18. Add 2 for the longer holes.

Average score here can be quite skewed if the same kid keeps entering high scores. The best way to measure course difficulty is SSA, and that award would go to Iron Hill, DE. I was happy with 30 over when I played it a few years ago. It makes calling everything par 3 ridiculous when the top pros average 72 or par 4.

Cedar Hill in Nashville is another course where it feels insane to have all the holes at par 3... no I don't want to start another "lets argue about if its better to play all holes as 3's discussion".. i'm just saying when you play some of the long pin positions you are like... 3 shots.. really.. really?

exactly. it is a beast. but i feel like it's a very fair course.
I shot a 95 or 96 when i played there for the first time last fall. granted, it was a day after i had played a tournament and slept on someone's couch. not feeling the freshest.
I went back in april and shot an 80 and it didn't feel amazing or anything at the time. i had two double bogeys, five bogeys, and a miracle 150ft. upshot that skipped off a huge rock (hole 12) and gave me the only birdie of the day. but it was definitely the best 8 over I've shot. Playing courses like that makes you look at all other courses differently.

Of the courses I've played more than once, for my skill level Nevin, Renny Gold, The Web, WR Jackson, and Stoney Hill all fit this bill. Even Stankin' Rankin (all the long tees and pin placements) feels good for me to shoot +8. Playing the long tees at Va-Du-Mar fall into this category, too. The Angry Beaver (Elon long) is another. Many of the courses around here, if not most, I would feel good to shoot 8 over par.

Meant to ask you how you liked that one.
From what I've played, it would be Black Diamond at Emery Park in Buffalo, NY. Even set a a par 70, it will crush you from the gold tees. Hole one is an 1100 ft. hole, and it doesn't ease up from there.

I just looked at the pictures of Nevin. W O W !!!! That course isn't even fair, honestly I don't know how a pro would even score under par here. 685' Par4 through insanely long tight wooded fairways is for the birds! Oh, and not to mention baskets placement is just sickening!

At West Lake (Davenport IA), it is best to just count everything par 4, makes it easier to keep track of where you're at relative to par.
24 holes, Am tees SSA 68, Pro tees SSA 84.
Course record is in the mid-70s I think. There's four holes out there where a 3 is a legit eagle, and I feel really good about a 5 on any of those.

Yup, in the Raleigh area, Leigh Farm golds is the killer - especially now when the pins are in the long/long position. I think the lowest score on the advanced is 62, but that was before the redesign of some holes. A 68 on gold (and long/long) is very impressive. I would also put Valley Springs Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1959) blue tees in this category.

darkside= par 56 (holes 2 and 7 are most definitely 4's)

since ssa is calculated by round score rather than hole score it's hard to tell.
your playing partner nailed both of the drives but that is not a common occurence even among top shelf players. my guess is he would be unlikely to replicate both in a given round.
i have played them both many times with a wide variety of players and have only seen a handful of two's on them combined and many many 5's or worse.

I would say the toughest ones I have played seem to be mostly designed by Stan McDaniel and friends. It doesn't help that I am usually only in NC for 1-3 weeks a year, but those courses just kick my butt. Stumpy Creek is the closest course to my parents, 5 minutes away and I think one of the most brutal in terms of needing to make it through the trees. I don't typically keep score, but if I did 8+ would make me very happy, realistically it would be somewhere in double digits above par. I really do enjoy all the courses that I have played in NC, makes So Cal seem like miniature golf sometimes.

I completely agree. I didn't find it to be very tough at all...and I'm not really very good. Hole 20 was the only "tight" hole on the course...and it was not well-designed. Other than that, the levee hole is the only really difficult hole at West Lake.

yeah I'm afraid those who havent played that trinity of courses have no idea....Id also add that of the Nockamixon scorebook avg of 85 which is 17 over par that the first few pages are when the course was 14 holes....there are many walk off rounds....and a slew of doubles rounds scores. All of that just speaks to the difficulty of that course. Course record is 58 or 59 during World's Play in 2005. So its never sniffed a 54 for those everything is a par 3 crowd.
Nevin is the only North Carolina course I felt matched Nocky for difficulty. Oh and theres really nothing more difficult than Iron Hill...almost too hard to be enjoyable...my best days I hope to score in the 80s there.

I second Fallasburg Park but down here in Bryan Ohio I would have to say Recreation Park is a b**ch. The guy that designed it can't even shoot an even on it, I think his best is a +2 and he's an Am1 player. I can only shoot +20 on it (which isn't saying a whole lot). The park is overly protective of anything that isn't disc golf so of course every single soccer field and baseball field that the entire course is weaved between is OB. Pretty much the thing that is the most challenging is that you pretty much have to bring a completely different loadout to this course. If you're used to your typical 40' to 50' fairways with dense autumn olive on each side with an open canopy in the fairway then this will be completely frustrating for you. There is hardly any open flyways in the first nine. There are some lines but it's about the same as standing 20 feet from your house, opening two windows on each side and trying to throw through each window about 200 feet.

Parma (in Parma NY) is pretty brutal. I'm relatively new to the sport (started last fall), but that course ate me up and spit me out. Shot a 73 my first time through. Was averaging 68 or so on Ellison.

The Long tees at Elk Creek DGC in Appamattox, VA. I heard this course described as the "woodiest course in America" after a guy played from the medium tees. Some holes from the Longs aren't insane, but if they aren't, they're easily in the hard category. Some are in the insane difficulty category even for a Pro. There's one hole, 7 i believe, that is a U-shaped, 413 foot, uphill hole, and the first 200' of the fairway are about 8' wide.
I played from these the first time I played the course and swore I would never play them again. That was 4 years ago. I haven't played em since.

Im not real big on keeping score unless im playing with others or in a tourney, but everytime I play Pinchot State Park-Quaker's Challenge (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2315) I kick myself for not going across the lake and playing Pinchot State Park-Boulder Woods (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=233&mode=ci)
It'll beat you up right off the bat, but at least you know what your getting yourself into right away

I shot more than 8 over(if all par 3s) at White Oak today. It was 103 degrees, stale air, and humid. I hadn't played in a couple weeks either.
