Looks like our roadtrip will take us from Cinci to Cleveland next week.
Wondering which courses to hit along the way.
Right now we are planning to play Euclid once we get there.

You should definitely play the Brent Hambrick Memorial, its not right off 71, but its worth. Another that you should try to get in, while also not right off 71, is Roscoe Ewing in Medina, this course has a lot of history, and its a lot of fun.

I was originally planning on sticking to I-71, but it looks like taking a more westerly route from Cincy will be better in terms of disc golf quality.
Here are the courses under consideration;
*Pike Lake
Rocky Fork
Williamsburg Comm Park
Great Seal
Flat Rocks
Lobdell Reserve
*Deis Hill
*Arboretum-Spiker
*Lincoln Park (Oak Ledges)
Would you say * are must plays ?
Didn't realize Canton had such a wealth of courses.
I'd say Deis is a must play for sure. Lincoln and Arboretum are both really good as well. I think I enjoyed Lincoln more than Arboretum. You can't go wrong playing any of the courses but Deis stands out as my favorite if I had to pick one of the 3.
Pike Lake was a lot of fun, definitely worth a stop. I also enjoyed Lobdell although if you're not a fan of more open courses then I'd skip it. Great Seal was alright, not great but not bad.. just kind of in the middle.

If you're going all the way to lake Erie:
* Sims Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/../course.php?id=639)
If you're sticking to I-71:
* Freedlander (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1291) (hit this on the way from I-71 over to Canton)
** Arboretum-Spiker Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/../course.php?id=188) (the jewel of the area)
... I haven't played Deis Hill Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/../course.php?id=2516) yet.

*Pike Lake - 4.5 rating (5 reviews including Olorin 4.5 & timg 4.0)
*Deis Hill - 4.0 rating (11 reviews - trusted reviewers all gave 4.0)
*Arboretum-Spiker - 3.5 rating (16 reviews - 2 trusted reviewers gave 3.5 & 4.5)
*Lincoln Park (Oak Ledges) - 4 rating (9 reviews - 3 trusted reviewers gave it 3.5, 3.5, 4.0)
I would say Pike Lake is the must play of the list and all the others are great courses that are well worth going out of your way to play. None of them should disappoint according to the reviews.
I do not mean to sound rude or anything, but I am curious why you would ask this given the wealth of info on this site. All your * courses have lots of reviews - most pretty detailed, pictures, maps, etc. What more do you expect to gather? Whatever it is, maybe there needs to be another category added to the course pages.

Well, it's always nice having someone who has played two or more of the * courses to compare them and you guys were kind enough to do that. I hope to play all of them, but if the weather comes into play I would be inclined to hit the best cluster of courses, (which may not necessarily have the highest rating) which looks like Canton. Since everyone is high on Pike Lake, maybe I'll have to rethink that. *Pike Lake - 4.5 rating (5 reviews including Olorin 4.5 & timg 4.0)
*Deis Hill - 4.0 rating (11 reviews - trusted reviewers all gave 4.0)
*Arboretum-Spiker - 3.5 rating (16 reviews - 2 trusted reviewers gave 3.5 & 4.5)
*Lincoln Park (Oak Ledges) - 4 rating (9 reviews - 3 trusted reviewers gave it 3.5, 3.5, 4.0)

Thanks for the feedback. What you are getting at might be a very cool search feature for Tim to add: select several courses and be able to see reviewers who have played all/most of them. You could easily see which reviewers have similar taste to you if they have played any courses you have played and key in on those.

It's also very interesting to me to find clusters of really good courses in determining a route. They may not pull you in by themselves, but they are a draw collectivley when you have 3 or more close together. For instance, I hadn't really thought of Canton as being a disc golf destination before I started poking around today. A different color for 3.5+ courses on the map browser would be helpful.
Here's our current (but very tenative) plan;
June 8-9 (Kings Island)
Idlewild/Mt. Airy/Lincoln Ridge
June 11
Pike Lake/Great Seal
June 12
Deis Hill/Arboretum-Spiker/Lincoln Park
June 13 (Cedar Point)
June 14
Sims/Euclid
June 15
Moraine
June 16
Knob Hill/Deer Lakes
If you can work IUP College Lodge in there when you're in the Pittsburgh area, you won't be disappointed.

I think a road trip map feature would rock if possible...where it will show courses within 25 miles of your trip route or something along those lines...or maybe to make it easier just have 4-5 waypoints on the route and have the search go out 50 miles...i kind of do this manually by clicking on random parts of the interstate I travel, but it would be neat to see it automatically...but it sounds like probably a boatload of work.

Yea, we've been talking about making this trip for ten years, but summer baseball always threw a monkey wrench into the schedule. The youngest son is graduating from HS tomorrow, so baseball is finally over. Glad we waited until we discovered disc golf.

June 12
Deis Hill/Arboretum-Spiker/Lincoln Park
June 14
Sims/Euclid
June 15
Moraine
June 16
Knob Hill/Deer Lakes
I live near most of these courses, and have played all (some multiple). All are great, and I would say my faves from the group:
Deis Hill
Lincoln Park
Deer Lakes
That said, again all are great courses. The ones I singled out just happen to be my preferred in the list.

I too prefer Lincoln Park over Arboretum-Spiker but both are very nice courses. Lincoln Park is more technical and personally I think the scenery is better.
Lobdell Reserve in Alexandria is a great course I finally got around to playing for the first time recently. Not the most challenging or unique but it was arguably the most peaceful round I've played.
Brent Hambrick Memorial or Hoover to us locals, should most definitely be on your places to play list. Holes 1 and 2 are unfortunately closed until the tournament in July for reseeding but the other 25 holes are good to go.

We'll be doing a mix of camping and motels.
Looks like good camping at Pike Lake,East Harbor and Moraine.

I've camped at Great Seal before. Its a very nice park. minus the creepy van that pulled into the camp spot next to us at 2 AM when we were previously the only campers there. Thank god it was a drunk dude looking sleep it off and not any horror movie based fear coming to fruition.

Thanks, Great Seal would actually be better than Pike Lake as far as our schedule. A-spiker and Lincoln Park have camping listed as being nearby, but I'm not sure where it is.
Also still looking for something around Cincy.

Looks like you got some good courses there. Pike lake is one of my personal favs. I grew up pretty close to there, although the course did come until I moved away, and every time I get back I make sure I have time to play this one. you'll want to really keep an eye on your disc, bring plenty of water, and be ready to hike. Also make sure you give yourself plenty of time to play. The first time I played it took a little over 3 hours.

Deer Lakes is the best Pitt area course IMO. I recently did a west PA trip. I d recommend Pymatuning and Seven Springs if you can swing it. Both are new and are supposed to be completey playable this summer. I played Pymatuning back 9 are complete and it was easily the most fun open course I have played to date. Seven Springs is the best ski hill course I have played to date it featured 2 lakes and excellent use of terrain. It was more than just chuck it up and down the mountain. Morraine is challenging but to me a tiny notch below Deer Lakes, still better than 99% of courses in the world and a must play. I'd skip Knob Hill It's a good course but gets a lot of sentimental votes from locals based on rep I think. IUP lodge is pleasurable and clean and just a wonderful day as well but a bit to the east of PITT. I wanted to get to Thompson but ran out of time. Either way your starting with Idlewild and finishing with Deer Lakes that is some kind of amazing disc golf sandwich enjoy!

Could spend another day around Pittsburgh picking up IUP,Thompson and Schenley...but would have to knock out two courses on Lake Erie (Sims and Lake Shore).

Pymatuning is close to ohio border and close to lake Erie....I d consider that one strongly. I'm beginning to get jealous....If your a serious disc golfer, which I know you are, your really going to love deer lakes.....just a fun and challenging day. Im looking for excuses to get back there one day. Be sure to be aware of what the Orange Belt is. Its the route to the park basically....just keep following signs for the orange belt regardless of which way the roads go...just follow the silly orange signs....I had no idea what an orange belt was and got lost a few times.

Thanks, I'll look into Pymatuning. If we get fouled up on the weather, I'll probably cut out the Pittsburgh courses and do them on another trip.
I'm really not a serious disc golfer if by serious, you mean being any good.
I can do ok on short woods courses, but when I get on a course like Seneca, I should just leave my bag in the car cuz I'm a total DG poser.
I can however, stink up a course and appreciate it at the same time, with the best of em. Sometimes I just have to settle for one good shot a round. My sons get some respectable distance, and they enjoy open courses, so at least the majority of us will be doing the courses justice.:D.

but after looking at your tenitive schedule. and the dates in which you plan to play. And having played all but 6 of the current 93 DGC in Ohio (99 DGC played total in Ohio). I would suggest not going to CEDAR POINT on a saturday unless you like standing in longer lines. I would suggest (if you can) going to the POINT during the week.
but say you can't alter your schedule. I still recommend coming to Stark County (home of Canton/ Massillon DGC's, amongst others) and playing the Massillon course. It's really looking nice since the SCDGA cleaned it all up for our recent Hall of Chains tournament. I also suggest playing DOVER's Dies Hill or city park. That's about 20 minutes south of Canton on I-77. but if your a traveler like me. and was traveling from I-71 towards Stark County, I would suggest stopping by real quickly and play the NEW Charles Mills (should be open for play about the time your traveling our way) Lake Park DGC http://www.mwcdlakes.com/ camping is available here. It's only 9 holes, but it's a really cool 9 as you play out and over to an island and back. Then I would continue eastward on rt.30 (watch your speed on 30) and play Wooster's Freedlander Park, then from Wooster take rt. 250 east to Dover and play Dies Hill red or white tees (blue if your really sadistic), then head north on I-77 and play Canton or Massillon (both are looking good after the SCDGA has really done a great job cleaning up the parks for last month's Hall of Chains tournament). Canton course is minutes away from I-77 (exit 107 A) and Massillon is 20 minutes west of I-77/ rt. 30 interchange (both are cool courses, I can walk to Arboretum/ Spiker Park. but find myself playing Massillon more often), then I would travel up to north to Portage Lakes to camp http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/ataglance/tabid/76/Default.aspx . Portage Lakes is in the process of developing an awesome DGC (we have 7 baskets sold and looking for more sponsers for a 18 hole championship course), but you can camp at the State Park and that's minutes away from I-77. the next day I would play Medina (Ohio's first DGC) and (host to a 4th of July tournament that will feature Ken Climo, Dave Feldberg, Avery & Valarie Jenkins, Elaine King, Eric Vandeberg and a slew of our sports top players both male and female, check out the guest list at http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=9033 ), then from Medina I would suggest going and play Sim's park and stopping by at Scotti's ( This is the man and the restuarant to visit when done playing for the day for a night cap Scotti's is located just off of I-90, turn north onto E.185th, and the Itallian eatery will be on your left), I'd also suggest playing another cool 9 hole course in Osborne Park in Willoughby. Hole # 4 is as close as you want to get to Lake Erie, infact being a LHBH player I throw my shot out over Lake Erie and have it come back in towards the basket.
Give me a ring, if you need a guide at either Canton or Massillon.

When you get near Idlewild, Banklick...err..Lincoln Ridge...give me a PM and I'll guide you around. Also, if you go to Kings Island...you have 3 small..but good courses near Kings Island in The Gulley, Monroe, Turtle Creek... I hope you get to play Pike Lake and Great Seal as well...if you like wooded courses..you'll love them. Pike Lake is a favorite of mine...love the course...don't do so well in tournaments there.
Also, Sims in Cleveland is a nice course with a great view of the Lake...if you ever get a chance to play in one of Scotti's tournaments....you will be amazed at the food spread he puts out for everyone. I played this tournament last year with a 101F temp but still managed to enjoy myself immensely. Scotti is a true asset to disc golf.

The best days to go to the Point or Kings Island are definitely overcast/damp days, if not a weekeday. If you go to Cedar Point the Power tower is a great thrill ride and the line is typically shortish and moves quickly. The Millenium Force is the only coaster I've been on that justified waiting for the front car. I assume its still running, as I haven't been there in a couple years but Cedar Point also has the previous coaster height record holder in the Magnum. Cool thing about that coaster is I hear its time is limited ... all these years of rides on it have caused the bottom of the big drop to start to sink into the ground.

Portage Lakes doesn't have a Disc Golf course, yet. (we have 7 holes paid for, but nothing in the ground yet. seeking sponsers if you know of any ;))
but it does have camping and is within 20-40 minutes away from the Canton, Massillon, Dover, Medina, and Cleveland courses.
Another cool course to play is Clarence Darrow Park in Warren, it has 15 holes in a wooded type of setting, with another 9 open across the street at the Kent St./ Trumbell campus. and Warren is in between Pittsburgh and Canton (more close to Youngstown)
Scotti's is a treat to have a cold brew and excellent (and i'm not just saying that to be kind, it is delicious) Itallian meal after a day of playing DG.

Just a heads up on Pymatuning -- I went there in fall of 2008 and only the back nine had tees/baskets. The "front nine" was something I guess they have planned out and set up temporary baskets or something. There were no front nine baskets when I drove 2+ hours to play there :(
Maybe it's changed since then, but no one has updated the course info on the DGCR course page since I did after going there last year.
Personally, I would hit Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula instead of Pymatuning. In the general area, and LSP is a great course.

Grand Opening for the Charles Mill DGC will be announced soon. possibly as soon as this week.
I think you'll like it. you might not like to pay to enter, but I think you'll like the DGC even if it's only 9 holes.
and Lakeshore Park in Ashtabula is one of my personal favorites of all the DGC i've played and should not be missed.

Asking actual regs from this sight is part of the wealth of info from this sight. In fact it is bonus info. The question to ask after you decide which courses to play in my opinion would be about navigational issues. Playing a course for the 1st time can be a challenge that takes away from enjoying and soaking in your round. walking around sweating searching for the next tee can ruin a round for me.

Personally, I would hit Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula instead of Pymatuning. In the general area, and LSP is a great course.
I think I'll take your & DH's advice on this.
It will be cool to drive from the NC mountains and play our first course of the trip on Lake Erie. I really want to mix in some fun short courses, which is sometimes hard to figure out just from the ratings. Any suggestions ?
June 8
Lake Shore
Sims

Plus, there are lots of courses that I would rate highly but have a preference of one over the other(s) if you were on a schedule and had to—or wanted to—choose just one.
The courses near in PA near Pittsburgh are a good example: Knob Hill, Moraine & Deer Lakes are all great courses, but having played them all I would suggest Deer Lakes if one had to choose just one.

Thanks! I am not averse to playing to play seeing how I haven't had to once in 9+ years. If the course is worth it of course :)

You should definitely play the Brent Hambrick Memorial, its not right off 71, but its worth. Another that you should try to get in, while also not right off 71, is Roscoe Ewing in Medina, this course has a lot of history, and its a lot of fun.
I would agree with this and add Arboretum-Spiker in Canton.

yeah ... I know it sucks having the first two (arguably signature) holes closed til July, but Brent Hambrick Memorial deserves to be on most peoples wish list if not courses played. I do have home boy bias for it ... but a lot of people that don't live around here agree.

We are taking off at 5pm today, I'm stewing over taking I-79 or I-77.
The I-77 route looks more direct and would have us hitting Deis Hill,A-Spiker,Lincoln Park first, but puts Sims and Lake Shore out of the way as far as going to Cedar Point.
I-79 gets us in perfect position to hit Lake Shore, Sims and maybe Osbourne on the way to Cedar Point.
If we take I-77 and skip Sims and Lake Shore, we would avoid the Cleveland traffic and could easily pick up Hambrick and Blendon Woods, but I really hate to pass up the uniqueness of playing Beside Lake Erie.
Other courses on the bubble right now are;
Hedges Boyer
Aumiller
Gordon Holton
Hudson Springs

I don't know how many is in your party or if you guys sleep until noon, but you should be able to play all of the mentioned courses in a 3 or 4 day period. I average 5 to 6 courses a day when I'm on the road.
Don't know for sure about Charles Mill DGC, they had the baskets last fall and have waited til now to put them into the ground, so who knows. It going to be a good challenging 9 hole course for all skill levels. They have camping available on site and it's minutes (10 min. tops) from the I-71/ rt. 30 interchange. Yeah you might have to pay a fee, but what's a couple $$. I don't like to pay taxes, but I pay em so what's a couple bucks if you have an opportunity to play a decent DGc. (and with this course come tournament time (if everything works out), we've got a rabbit up our sleeve that will be one of the kind of anyDGC anywhere in the WORLD, that I know of. so keep your fingers crossed of our secret. with the hope that it comes true:D and please help support this course by going to it sometime)
Don't want to throw another wrench in your way, but I played a virgin course (#633) yesterday as I helped the course designer, Mr. Scott Campbell with the usage of my truck to load up the last 5 baskets and take them around the Malvern, Ohio DGC at Tank park (off of rt. 43, this makes 9 (soon to be 10)DGc's within a 1/2 hour drive of Canton, Ohio. I heard that after next weekend work day that they'll have footboards and tee signs in for better enjoyment. If you'd like to help out, hit Scott with e mail at Scott Campbell www.MalvernDGchief@aol.com or www.acejive@yahoo.com . Scott was telling me during my guided tour that they plan to add 9 more for a sweet 18 hole DGc in Malvern by years end, so again please support Malvern with care and dignity.
Have fun and be safe and watch out for the Highway patrol on rt. 30, especially around Wooster and Canton. I have a friend who's a patrolman and he always says to me...... 7 your fine and 9 your mine. but when on rural route and going through little burgs, I would go the posted speed limit.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. 80.00 will take you a long way in a Toyota Prius, but we had to cut the trip short and never made it to Cincy. I really hate missing Lincoln Park (Oak Ledges), but we did play;
Deis Hill
Roscoe Ewing
East Harbor
Sims (2)
Moraine
Knob Hill
Deer Lakes (partial due to rain)
Interestingly, when we voted on our favorites on the way home, Sims was the only course in the top 3 for all of us. We played it Wednesday morning, ate at Scotti's and then decided to play it again rather than driving to Lake Shore. Scotti came out and talked to us and he was great, then served up the best calzones that we have eaten anywhere ! What a great ambassador for disc golf.
My favs were;
Roscoe Ewing
Moraine
Sims
Special thanks to Dan Hyzer for urging us to play Roscoe Ewing and Sims.
Otherwise we would have missed them for sure.

You should go up 75 through Dayton, then over on 70 to Columbus, then up 71 to Cleveland ... in Dayton hit Belmont and Englewood.

I think it's a bit late for that.

Dayton could still be in the future mix.
The reason we opted for PA instead of Cincy this time is because we have a family member moving to Nashville in July. N-ville will be a nice starting point for a I-65/I-75 loop (Bowling Green/Louisville/Cincy/Lexington).
