The results are finally here, I tallied up everything from VonDrehle's original thread to show what the members of DGCR are throwing in the year of 2011.
I categorized the results into two different spreadsheets that I will provide links to.

Results by COMPANY- Categorized as Innova, Discraft, Lat. 64, etc.

Results by DISC TYPE - Categorized as Drivers, Fairway, Mid-Range, Putters

This was basically a two day job that I finished up for vonDrehle, the original poster of the thread, "What do you throw? 2011". He ran into some difficulties with his laptop which sucks tremendously, but I ended up finding all of the results for him. I'm thinking this should stop people from posting the same 'Favorite Putter' polls as they can just refer to this thread.

- I did not include discs that were not mentioned as they obviously would've had no votes

- I could not get very specific with different types of plastic and molds as many people just provided the model of the disc. So it was difficult to really find any separation when it came down to plastics.

- All of the results are almost spot on, there might be an extra vote here or there due to my mental mistakes and double posters, or people that posted what they were throwing this year more than once. But for the most part, these results are very accurate.

- I counted up all of the votes by the page, and wrote down every model of disc that I came across, I didn't rush through it so every disc mentioned in the thread should be here.

- I'm hoping that everyone can use this thread as a reference when they have questions about the popularity of certain discs and also to have a good idea of what is thrown most by the majority of the members on this site.

I plan on doing more analysis with the numbers just to give you guys a better breakdown between disc types and companies. That is if you want me to...

I'm guessing unknown factory second

Cool.

Whats a mystery second run?

Yeah, not sure what that was, it was included in someone's post under mid-ranges and I decided to include it. I'm thinkin' New has the right idea.

You can do a lot of things with those top four discs.

Valk
Teebird
Buzzz
Wizard

Agreed. I can personally say that I'd be set with just these four.

Wow this was an excellent idea and I hope it reduces a lot of the unnecessary threads that are started by new players that aren't familiar with the search function. Thanks for the all work!

This is a cool thing to do, I never knew that the buzzz was so much more popluar than the roc. One thing though, you have a bunch of drivers in the distance category which should be in the fairway category; Stalker, XL, Cyclone, Xpress, Impact, Stratus (maybe a mid?) Trident, EXP-1, PLS, Glide, and JLS.

Lamp, since you suggested, I'd like to know how many ppl posted (to find out what percentage of ppl throw a certain disc). I figured the buzzz, TB, and roc would be in the top 5, but I'd be really interested to see the percentage of ppl who carry those discs. Gracias.

Alright, thanks for the heads up, I'll see if I can edit the spreadsheet since it's online and the info should update. Only reason I put these in the drivers section is because I couldn't find any accurate info as to which disc was in each category, just wanted to be safe.

Also,

Sticky?

That would be awesome, and with the whole statistical deal, I'll be getting to that soon, sounds like a good idea, glad you brought it up.

Editing the data right now, adding some of the drivers to the fairway driver category. Spreadsheet might look a little messed up until it saves properly.

Very nice you have much more patients then I do :D. Also here are the top 15 from when I did this in 2010. It was a much much smaller sample size but it is really interesting how the Buzzz really has stomped the Roc over the last year.

Wraith - 25 - 45%
Roc - 24 - 43%
Buzz - 23 - 41%
Aviar - 21 - 38%
Destroyer - 20 - 36%
TeeBird - 15 - 27%
TL - 13 - 23%
Firebird - 13 - 23%
Surge - 12 - 21%
Wizard - 11 - 20%
Sidewinder - 11 - 20%
Leopard - 11 - 20%
Valkyrie - 10 - 18%
Stalker - 9 - 16%
Challenger - 9 - 16%

(Also next time I do a sale thread you get nice discounts :D)

jongoff09

I would have guessed the top of all of them except the putter, and I would have said Aviar for it and it was only one post off. That's pretty cool that the Aviar and Wizard are so close, with the Ion a distant 3rd.

Yea if you took a poll from all disc golfers the valk would be around #4 or #5.

Lamp & vonDrehle - great stuff

I took a few minutes to get the disc ratings for those that got over 10 votes. How to I attach a spreadsheet.

Quick questions:

- did you get enough data to include plastic type (you've done a ton of work already, so maybe just on the top 5 in each category)

- was there enough to break out some of the model variants such as SS or the many types of Roc

- why are Stalker and Striker included in Fairway when they are speed 9 like the Valkyrie?

jongoff09

The OP in the other thread just asked to post the model of the discs, not plastic type. Obviously, some people didn't read that and posted the plastic type, but the OP didn't ask for it.

This is essentially a post your bag thread while playing a standard course. I will tally everything up and see what the results are at the end. I am only going to be looking at Molds not the plastic type as that would cause way to much variety to get anything solid from it

vonDrehle
07-07-2011, 01:53 AM
Can you imagine the size of the spreadsheet if all the plastics were taken into account . Just looking at the Valkyrie you have DX, Pro, Champion, Star, Echo Star, Glow and Champion Glow.

KniceZ
07-07-2011, 02:05 AM
Sorry I didn't go back to the OP - just thought I ask!! As a new player I'm trying to wrap my head around all the disc / plastic variations and was hoping to just follow the more experienced; and as an engineer I tend to over analyze.

So forget my first two questions, how about the last one - what am I not understanding that puts some speed 9 disc as distance drivers and other as fairway?

vonDrehle
07-07-2011, 02:09 AM
I'm not sure about the ratings and what not but I throw my Striker as a fairway driver.

New013

I bet if we started this all over again right now the top discs wouldn't change very much but the bottom discs would.

Brall
07-07-2011, 09:39 AM
very interesting

and i was very surprised by two things:
- had no idea that teebird would come out so far ahead of the leopard
- same for the buzzz/roc

thx guys for putting this together. hopefully you can do it again next year and include these results in the posts for next year. it will be fun to track the trends.

Lamp
07-07-2011, 10:11 AM
Yeah, we will definitely be doing this next year. And people questioning the striker in the fairway category, I can move that over to drivers if you would like, but chickenonabun suggested that I moved a couple more drivers to the fairway category and that might have been one of them, who knows. Thanks everyone for the praise and the number crunch will be coming up in one of my next posts. The results wouldn't have been the same without the number of people that participated.

Lamp

but it is really interesting how the Buzzz really has stomped the Roc over the last year.
^ I almost thought I screwed something up when I saw that the Buzzz nearly doubled the Roc in votes, honestly had to do a recount for reassurance.

(Also next time I do a sale thread you get nice discounts :D)
^Gonna have to PM when that comes around :D. Looking forward to it.

Got all of the numbers sorted out into four more spreadsheets. First though I will share with you the most important data:

There were 2103 total votes. There were 265 members who posted (I made sure that there were no double posters included). There were 792 votes under drivers, 382 under fairway drivers, 533 under Mid-Range, and 396 under putters. This means that the average poster listed nearly 8 discs in their post, telling us what they threw in the year of 2011.

Here are the breakdowns, the links will take you to the spreadsheets.

What % of Members Throw a Certain Disc - Out of the Top 50 Discs:
ex- 20% of DGCR members throw a Firebird.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0AqVEak7cTdgEdE03QmFYZHRuVkRYbEx1RTZCQU1ha1E&output=html

Out of the Total Vote - Percentages By Company:
ex- 8.7% of the total vote were Latitude 64 discs.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0AqVEak7cTdgEdHRLeklDU3Y1d2Roalg4NFJEUjJPc3c&output=html

Out of the Total Vote - Percentages By Company Models:
ex- 28.4% of the total vote were Discraft Drivers.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0AqVEak7cTdgEdFo2NHZOd19SSXNIM1Y4eHZNUHBFUGc&output=html

Out of the Total Vote - Percentages of Top 10 Discs of Each Category:
ex- 5.5% of the total vote was the Innova TL
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0AqVEak7cTdgEdGFLTFo3bGVnbzg0VkJnZkJNTWdLeHc&output=html

There you go folks, enjoy.

New013

Those stats really do reinforce the belief that Innova makes the best drivers, Discraft the best mids, Gateway/Innova best putters.

Can anyone go back to their marketing class days and remember why individual discs start to spread out more once they hit 15% and why there is such a smaller number of discs above 15%

Ryan P.
07-07-2011, 07:39 PM
Awesome stats Lamp. 55% of people throw a buzzz? no surprise it's high because it's that good of a disc, but wow, over half? that's ridiculous.

and yeah, New, you hit it right on the head. The Percentages don't lie as far as what company makes the best sellers.

Nice work, this is cool/interesting to look through.

I, too, was surprised to see the Buzzz towering over the Roc that much. But it makes sense. My Z Buzz is money and it's almost completely placed my Roc. I still carry them both due to weight differences and differences in dome.

even though we had quite a few bags listed this year, maybe next year more people will post. i think that around 500 more posters would increase the validity of the final result.

also, 'what's in the bag' vids from touring pro's could possibly also be used.

I completely agree with this statement, more is better, and if I start from the start of the thread instead of the 31st page then it would be a lot easier.

I wouldn't mind doing different results, a great one would be, 'what do the pro's throw?' If people could help me track down links and videos then I would be down.
