Children and those young at heart could be playing a different sport next year on their Nintendo Wii video game console - one that has a direct connection to Columbia County - disc golf.

"I've been contacted by two different (software) companies who are both interested in making disc golf games for the Wii," said Brian Graham, an Augusta resident and the executive director of the Professional Disc Golf Association, which is managing a new International Disc Golf Center at Wildwood Park in Appling.

The Wii is an interactive video game console that allows play with arm movements using a handheld controller. Disc golf, meanwhile, has rules similar to golf but involves using a flying disc instead of a golf ball and clubs.

Mr. Graham said he was approached recently about two game ideas: one that would focus on some of the top players of the game, another that would be a partnership with the PDGA "and may possibly even take one of the courses out here at the IDGC (at Wildwood) and make that a digital course that you can play."

Development of such games, he said, is in the early stages, "but they've started the communication on it."

One of the software companies is Autonomous Productions, based in Redwood City, Calif. Shayne Guiliano, the studio director for Autonomous, said there do not seem to be any major obstacles keeping his company from developing a disc golf game for the Wii.

"Our tentative plans are to release a game sometime middle or late next year," he said. "... The Wii is obviously a great platform ... and we just think it's perfectly suited for what we want to do for a disc golf game."
Mr. Guiliano said the game most likely will be downloadable at a cost of about $10 to $15 through a new Wii service called Wii Ware.

"We're looking at re-creating some of the famous courses, working with Brian (Graham) and that organization to make sure that the game is authentic, and kind of take people through the steps of becoming a professional disc golfer," he said.

Mr. Graham says such interest in disc golf says a lot about the game's growing popularity.

that will be interesting. i think i'd rather go outside and do it. But interesting.

Not sure if I'd want to go outside when there is 3 feet of snow on the ground but I know there are people out there that are into that. How do people find discs when they play in the winter anyway?

I think if it ever does happen it'll just be an amusing little game.. it obviously can't compete with the real deal :)

As someone who comes from a heavy skateboarding background I can't begin to describe how many kids took up skateboarding after playing the Tony Hawk games. I'm sure a DG wouldn't be as inspiring but it could only help to add to our numbers.

timg

I should pick up one of the latest Tony Hawk's. I think I stopped playing them on #3, it just got a little too repetitive. I was a bigger fan of the Thrasher game on PS1, it just seemed more realistic but that doesn't sell as well and I think I was one of 5 people that ever had a chance to play it. In case you couldn't guess, I also come from a heavy skateboarding background.

Back to the Wii game, I think if they did it right it could definitely spark interest in the sport. The only other DG games I've seen out there were pretty horrible.

I guess 2/5ths of those are on this board, 'cause I've played it too! There is another DG game out there - think they had it for PS2 and Xbox. Never played it, the wii controller might add some fun though...

I'll definitely be picking up a wii - and will definitely wait until this game launches! I've been talking with my friends about how logical and awesome it'd be to have a dg game on wii - exciting news for sure.

Well the game isn't guaranteed but I'd recommend getting a Wii anyway, it's a fun system to have.. especially if you invite a bunch of friends over.

As one who lives in a city (NY) where the nearest course is a 45 minute drive, I'm really excited to have something like this on the nights in between weekends just to keep my head in the game. Plus I really do think it'll be a lot of fun for folks who have heard about it, but who haven't gotten the chance to play yet. . . yay for wii!

yeah, i'd be down with a disc golf game for the wii.

all kidding aside, the sensors in the wii-motes are pretty sensitive and if done properly, it could be a really cool concept...

I did a search on Yahoo! and all I could come up with was an Ultimate/Golf Frisbee game. It was for the Nintendo DS System. I had no idea they had any games dealing with disc golf.

Wow, that does sound terrible. I'm glad I don't have a DS, otherwise I might destroy it for fear of it turning all of the sport of DiscGolf into a waste of money and an unplayable game.

I bought a Wii when it first came out, and have been in love with it ever since. I think a disc golf game would be sweet. I read something about it before I read it here, I wanna say it was ign.com because that's where I get my video game info, but I haven't double checked.

There is a game for the Wii that came out recently called "Game Party" it is a 8-9 mini-games that you would play at a party. In this you can play "beer pong" and darts. If the can make a game that has you throwing balls in cups and darts at boards I think they can work out the accuracy of disc golf.

Originally packaged with the Wii was "Wii Sports" and in the baseball part all you do is pitch or hit, but the game is a lot of fun. With the pitching I've found the not only do button combinations change your pitch, but the angle you throw the "ball" can change too.

So, finally to my point, why wouldn't they be able to come up with an accurate disc golf game? They have plenty of "ball golf" games that work great. I thin with the Wii-mote you would be able to throw "forehand" or "backhand" or "hammer" and the game should be able to recognize that. Also if while throwing you hold either the "A" or "B" button to pick whether you want the disc to slice or hook. One of the manufactures could sponsor the game so that their discs would be used in the game and you could rotate through a bag full of choices from driver to putter, slice to roller.

Well that is my thought on the subject, whether they make a game or not, and whether it's as cool as I hope it could be...that's left to be seen.

In the PDGA renewal letter I got yesterday, a PDGA Disc Golf game for the Wii was one of the things mentioned as an exciting thing coming up for 2008. No timetable or details, just a bullet point in the list.

Now why would you say that Tim? is it because the PDGA is going to be involved with it:rolleyes: You know everything they do is for the best interest of DG right:eek:

timg

LOL.. just that I doubt a lot of resources will be allocated to make this a great game since disc golf isn't the most popular sport in the world. The fact that it will be available only on the wii download services hints at the depth we can expect.

I can only imagine all the broken TV screens that will result from the wii-mote flying out of gamers' hands on those long opening drives. Ha, ha, ha!

It might not be too bad as Nintendo now gives you a wiimote condom to keep the toss damage to a minimum. I don't practice safe wii-playing though so I'm still at risk ;)

Really? I'll have to give it a shot. I didn't hear too many good things about the DS game when I looked into it. Chances are they were comparing it to the other, higher quality DS games which probably wasn't too fair.

there are three ways to easily find your disc in the snow and heavy leaves. #1- get a dog, #2 (preferred method)- usng duct tape, tape a 2ft or so strand of brightly colored yarn to the center of the top of the disc and in flight it will coil up in the middle and upon entering the snow will unravel and leave you a marker, #3- in fresh snow conditions( not too many golfers are usually out there), you'll see where it breaks through the snow. hope this will encourage you to try it sometime!

So excited to hear people are thinking about doing this. I can't wait til there is Ken Climo 2009 for the Wii. I'm really hoping Innova gets involved in a Wii game, so I'll be familiar with many of the discs (and hopefully be able to get a better feel for what other discs I haven't used are supposed to fly like.)

Maybe through dgcoursereview.com we can get a petition together where we all e-mail the company to show interest of the game. It may speed up the process and ensure the game is quality like tiger woods. You know your addicted to disc golf when you play all day to go home and play more on the Wii.

Not that I know of. If you buy it you don't need the disc to play once you installed it it so just pass it on to all your buddies and you can all play against each other.

Make that 3/5ths that game was great.

Can't wait for a DG game for the Wii, I have been saying that they need to make this game since the Wii came out. A game that included courses from around the world would be realy cool. That way I wouldn't have to pay thousands of dollars (in gas) to check out diffrent courses from across the country and world. If I had the extra thousands to spend I would, but for now a 50 dollar game will be enough out of my wallet.

THQ came out with that Big Beach Sports game today and the disc golf on there isn't bad. Your character can be left or right handed. You can backhand, forearm or tomahawk your disc. The harder you accelerate the remote the farther your disc goes. How you hold the remote when the finish your throw also impacts the flight of the disc. I think if THQ gets enough good responses about the disc golf in Beach Sports maybe they'll venture into making a full disc golf game with course makers and stuff.

Looks like there is another game called "Wii Sports Resort" that will feature disc golf. Evidently it will have a new controller called "MotionPlus" that has more accelerometers than the original wii controller for improved accuracy in capturing the movement.

In Wii Sports Resort (http://wii.ign.com/objects/142/14266992.html)'s Disc Golf, your only goal is to grasp a frisbee and hurl it into the air so that your Mii-like dog can run forward and catch it. The closer your frisbee soars to a virtual target on the field, the more points you get. It's so ridiculously simple and yet it's also a great deal of fun because the controls work so well. As you grip the frisbee, you can twist your wrist left and right, up or down, and you can do so slowly or quickly, and your on-screen Mii will do the same, closely mimicking your every movement. It works. Really. And because it works so well, it's fun. You can add very subtle movements to your throws and the frisbee will react accordingly. You really feel like you're in control. That a few extra accelerometers could make such a difference is almost comical, but it's true.

Uhhhhh. If they call soccer football..... I know that's what they call it in Europe but I still don't like it.

I know this is off topic but I couldn't resist. Europeans have used the term "football" to describe...football...since no later than 1604, but probably long before then.

Shakespeare's play King Lear contains the line: "Nor tripped neither, you base football player" (Act I, Scene 4). Shakespeare also mentions the game in A Comedy of Errors (Act II, Scene 1):

Am I so round with you as you with me,
That like a football you do spurn me thus?
You spurn me hence, and he will spurn me hither:
If I last in this service, you must case me in leather.

"Spurn" literally means to kick away, thus implying that the game involved kicking a ball between players.

"American football" was not even conceived until the late 19th century, so it always amuses me to hear fellow Americans complain about Europeans using the term as if they stole it. We stole the name and much of the game from them, not vice versa.

I sincerely hope you guys do not jump down people's throat for using the term "frisbee golf", because that would be quite the double standard. :)

But The Wii Motion Plus opens up the possibility of a real disc golf game because it adds true 1:1 motion and with that you could actually replicate throwing a real disc.

There are 4 wii games that have disc golf only 1 of which I have played beach sports, wii sports resort, tiger woods 10, and the unreleased PDGA presents. I got wii sports resort because the disc golf got better reviews. And it saved me $25 on the wii motion plus attachment. It's really fun but it doesn't have baskets. You putt into a highlighted circle. ( the dog frisbee is a different game in wii sports resort) my biigest complaint is no basket(I know tiger 10 has them) and second biggest complaint is disc choice and characteristics. Ex 3 discs driver, midrange, putter and they never flatten out. If you thow an anhyser it stays that direction never fades back to the left like a real disc would. I don't have much hope for PDGA presents hopefully a big company will get ahold of innova, discraft, and gateway and put together a real game.

IMHO Disc Golf on Tiger Woods 10 absolutely sucked. I own it and it is VERY limited. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that they included it...but fun factor is very low for someone who enjoys real disc golf. You only have the option of using 3 different discs and it is very tough to vary the speeds. Putting is ridiculously easy and most every shot is an open shot as they placed the holes on ball golf courses. If you land in a bunker...it is a stroke penalty.

Any one else have thoughts? Am I the only one that was VERY disappointed?

Not sure if I'd want to go outside when there is 3 feet of snow on the ground but I know there are people out there that are into that. How do people find discs when they play in the winter anyway?

Some people tape little orange streamers on the bottom of their disc so that if it goes in a few few feet, there is still a bright orange tail sticking out of the snow.

Twoods ten dg is a joke! It makes it look like a childs game. I literally bought a wii for it and it's the only game I own. I was very very disapointed. I figured with all they put into bg the dg would be decent. It only resembles dg by ideas not play. Putting is a joke. Mids won't get you anywhere. If you frisbee toss a driver it will go forever, but actually throw it and it's like your first time all over again. I should of spent the money on a basket.
The worst part is the embarassment. All the people I've promoted the sport to now say:"yea man I played dg the other day on the wii. You really like this game?!"

Any one else have thoughts? Am I the only one that was VERY disappointed?

nope. yeah it really sucked that there were only 3 discs, and only one throwing style, and that you couldn't do much with hyzer and anhyzer (although it does seem to slightly recognize it). And that every putt inside 60 feet is a gimme. Hopefully the PDGA one will be better.

Are you suggesting that every putt within 60 feet is NOT a gimme for you in real life?;)

the first time I play wii resort I aced 2 of the first three holes. I wish I only had to throw into an infinatly high, 50 foot wide rainbow tornado in real life! I wouldn't suck NEARLY as much as I do now!

Now that I've had a Wii (and Tiger Woods 10) for several months, and have played around with it some, I can say it again with some confidence: the disc golf in TW10 sucks.

It's far too easy to throw the "driver" at 100%, it's nearly impossible to throw the "midrange" at anything other than 100%, and I haven't missed a putt (60' and under) yet. And they all fly like golf balls, not golf discs.

On the bright side: (1) From a non-video-gamer's perspective, I find the ball-golf side of TW10 pretty entertaining. (2) This might potentially get non-DGers interested in disc golf; I just hope they realize it's actually a very different game than what EA Sports has concocted here.

I got tiger woods 2010 which has a side game of disc golf on it, and i got the wii sports resort which is more realistic as far as the disc flys but tiger woods has actual baskets and wii sports only has "target spots". Both are fun on rainy days, or when dad wants to show his kids whose still video game master.

Someone needs to come out with a real good acurate disc golf game with actual pro players and real discs to choose from.

I got the Tiger Woods 10 golf on Wii. It has a disc game on there. The last I read is that the PGA was going to have something good soon.

84 post later we've come full circle. people are saying "hey we need to do this, it would be awesome" when the thread started with "Hey, someone is seriously looking at doing this, wouldn't that be awesome?"
it amazes me

Seems like if it is released it's not gonna be on disc/disk form.
This is a gre area for me. I don't really care for more growth of the sport but do want a true dg game allowing body shape, endurance, throwing style, form, disc selection, disc wear, and weather to factor in. Along with real courses, brands, events. This will never happen until they see how much we really spend. But I like the "hippie" aspects.

Is the DG game on the 2009 or the 2010 version of Tiger woods golf for the Wii? For those of you that have played it, is it fun? Easy or Hard? How many can play at a time?

Thanks!
Don

Haven't played it, but it's on Tiger Woods 2010.

It's on TW10. I think up to 4 can play. Read the above postings for whether it's fun or not; I say, not as fun as it should be. Wii Sports Resort is more fun.

Definitely the 2010 version. I got it awhile back and with the Wii Motion attachment, it works decently. A lot of the physics seem off and forehands are almost impossible to work consistently with my experience. The putting is, in my opinion, is the worst part about it. If you are within 20 yds (the max distance for a putter according to the game), it will go in 99% of the time, even if you throw it backwards. There are also some mini-games that use the disc golf feature though that are entertaining, but still a lot of work to be done.

TW10, Okay, and the Wii Sports Resort is better. Now I know what to look for. I've read your comments on both. So, which is better the Wii Sports Resort with or with out the motion PLUS?

Thanks,
Don

Not sure if sports resort will work without motion plus, it was the motion plus release and actually comes with one.

I was looking on EBAY and found two versions, one with motion plus and one with out.

Okay, looks like I need to get the MP version.

THANks!

You have to have the MP version, but after trying a dozen times, I've found that the game sucks. I record worse scores on the Wii than I do in real life. I say don't waste your money.

With Wii's Sports Resort and TW2010... my group of dg friends have talked about what should be included in the game. Just like Paintball never translated well into Video Games, Disc Golf will not be perfect to make the move. But we've decided that decided that some things should be included before the game goes to the masses:

Disc Retrieval - Whether using a baseball to pop one out of a pine, or a retriever to pull it out of a stream/pond, this is a minigame that has to be included with a 3 minute time limit to get it retrieved. Also looking through a bush to find a wraith standing on end hiding under a pile of thorns.

Different Stances - I've never seen someone be able to just walk up and throw from behind their disc perfectly every time. I almost did, but she was 10, and still got stuck on top of some logs.

All the different throws? - How can Wii determine if you are throwing a thumber vs a tomahawk? You are going to have to select your shot...

All of this is going to make the game take forever... and you're best bet is just to get your ass outdoors and throw some real plastic... I guess some sports were meant to just be played.

For what its worth it's still fun... and you shot worse then you would in real life? Really.. I think my record for WSR is like -22, its cake.
