We all have seen the likes of nothing in signs to greatness and originality. Wondering what your fave signs are, maybe even links to pics.
This little college course in Cleveland, WI has one of my fave and what I consider some of the best signage around.

Deis Hill, Dover, OH.
Brand new signs have photo, drawing and even a hole nickname mounted on a color-coded post (RWB).
3 per hole when finished.
For signage afficionados, Deis Hill is must-see !

http://www.dgcoursereview.com/view_image.php?p=course_pics/1498/9f15e224.jpgThose are probably the nicest signs I've seen on a course yet. Unfortunately, the signs at the courses around me have all be vandalized, bent, pulled up and thrown in the lake, etc ruining any chances of the park district putting in anything close to as nice as those...:(

i agree Tom, those signs are top notch. the signs at the two courses near me are pretty much gone due to vandalism. but the other markers on the course are pretty decent.
I posted these in the recent course maps thread but here are the signs and map from CMC Glenwood Spings (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1137) in Colorado.

Course bias aside, I'd have to agree with the signs we have up at LTC. They've barely faded in the few years they've been in the ground, and we were told they would likely stay that way for quite some time.
I'm also a big fan of the signage at the Highbridge courses (see my photo of BH #15) (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/gallery.php?id=386&mode=gal#), although they employ a bit more simplicity in their design. It's not really important to me to know the nickname of a hole, unless it's a signature hole I'll remember forever.

BTW Tom, thanks for waiting to post this thread until I actually went to the course profile and uploaded JPGs of the signs for each hole (and new photos)! Those old photos didn't do it much justice...

I can't say strongly enough how useful good signage is when playing a course for the first time. Both of the signs posted are great. What would be even better would be to add some reference distances for points on the fairway. Either way those signs are great.

if your talking about tee signs i prefer short 4x4 posts sawed of level so when you want to play with just a couple discs you can stick the ones your not throwing on top or if your playing with just one you stick your beverage up there.
The main reason i like the post is they arent a visual distraction and stay out of the way when cut low enough so that your not worried about hitting it plus why do i need a picture im standing right in front of the motherfu--er

Haha, easy killer. Most good courses will place their signs at the back of the tee box or even further back (like the CMC course I mentioned above).
I do agree that having something in your throwing line or peripheral vision could be distracting but I've yet to run into that.
Those signs are SPECTACULAR!
Yeah, they did a real good job with the design.
Unfortunately, they recently put new sign posts in but for some reason it has taken weeks to affix the actual signs to them. So right now those beautiful signs are either sitting on the ground, on benches or even missing.
Kind of bums me out.

Best I've seen yet is on a course that isn't even finished. Creekside in Archdale, NC. They have these cool innova signs that tell you something new each hole, like how to grip, or how to throw...all that good stuff. Other than that I would have to say Luther Britt in Lumberton, NC has some damn good signs.

I do agree that having something in your throwing line or peripheral vision could be distracting but I've yet to run into that.i think some of where im coming from is a regional thing we have almost all natural teeboxes here so quite a few courses the tee sign marks the end of the tee so it has to be in the front .

The GREAT thing about the Idlewild signs that nobody knows...except after I tell you...everyone will know is....Houck did the graphics for us...but we ourselves printed the signs in the Boone County sign department. We printed them on the same reflective metallic material that stop signs are printed on and attached this sticky back metallic foil to stock sign material. Now...if some smuck damages one of our signs we can go to the sign department and print and create a new teesign. We also anchored the plexiglass to the sign using security bolts that require two specialty tools...one on top and one on bottom to remove the bolts.
Certain hole sponsors paid extra to have a copy of their tee sign sent to them. On some of these we printed on a glossy vinyl material used for banners..this makes an excellent material to frame and put on the wall.

Is that shot taken from the back of the tee looking towards the basket?
I.e. is the tee sign near the back of the tee or the front?
billnchristy
06-19-2009, 02:30 PM
It is near the back...you are looking towards the basket.
I think they are kind of backwards but they are pretty enormous and level so it doesn't matter as much.
You can see the red tee ahead, it is a normal shoebox design.

I don't think signs have to be visually exacting as long as they capture the most important features of a hole. The cartoony look is great if it works; hand painted signs work... but I think the features that need to be on any great sign are:
Hole number -- make it large and high contrast so it can be seen from a distance
Distance -- If there are multiple tees or pins, list the distance for each combination
Map of the hole -- show where the major trees are, bodies of water, any OB, any other distinguishing marks, and show with an arrow the most common line(s) to the basket.
Directions to the next tee -- show someone how to get to the next teebox. If there are special conditions -- like a long walk -- include those on the sign. Nothing worse than finishing a hole and having no idea where to go.
If the pin moves into different positions, the sign should be designed to indicate the current pin position. Lots of ways to do this, but it is - IMHO - essential to any good signage that you know where to go. Not just what three places you MIGHT have to go. I want to know where to throw THIS ROUND without walking up the fairway to look.
For courses with multiple tees -- clearly have the signage mark WHICH tee you are on, and WHERE the other tees are relative to where you are standing. Ideally, each Teebox should have its own teesigns -- not just one set of teeboxes. Teesigns for all teeboxes.
Sign placement -- signs should be behind and off to the side of any teepad. I'd say place all signs at least 5' away from the side and 10' from the back of any teepad. Many people start their runnup before the teebox, and it's nice not to have the sign in the way. Placing the tee back also allows other players on the card to study the hole and think about what they want to do when it is their turn -- in theory, this should increase speed of play.
Durable/Fadeproof. Make signs as long-lasting as possible. Also, if they can be designed so they blend into the landscape, that's even better. Make the course feel as natural as possible.
Redundancy -- as a final note, in areas prone to vandalism, it is great if the teebox itself can reinforce the main points of the sign. At least the hole number should be permanently placed on the teepad somehow (9red) or whatever. If possible, a simple arrow showing the general direction of the hole and the distance is even better. This means that in the event of a lost sign, people can still find their way around the course.
Finally, don't forget that Maps should work hand-in-hand with signage. Pin markings should also work. There are lots of ways to direct players to the next hole from the pin -- use one or more of these methods. People don't always remember to look at the signs for next hole information, so including it on/around the basket as well does wonders in aiding navigation. Do everything you can to make your course easy to navigate. It's a sign of care and professionalism.

My favorites were at Tyler state park. They have accurate pictures showing the placement of the multiple tees and in some cases multiple pads. Along with the basic obstacles in the way. They were easy to understand and gave good directions. The best part that really set them apart was the way they had set up a dial to tell you which tee the basket was on. I have been on courses when you have no idea which one to use because there is no marker and you cannot see it. Nice job to the club at Tyler!

Too many hours staring at the monitor:eek:. Also changed the text color on the "A" and "B" pin circles to black for better contrast. The Amateur "TEE" text in the red box on the left is not blurred in the original resolution. Still need to walk the course with a printed draft to notate the specific "Middle of the fairway" tree locations.

Elon in Charlotte was designed for kids and families. The holes are short, and there is only one placement per hole. This allowed us to do something fun with the signs -- art students from nearby schools designed artwork for the tee signs. We laminate the art and put it behind plexi. The frames allow us to swap out the art several times a year. This project has created a positive and well-received tie-in with the youth of the area.
The first set of art was done by 5th graders, and featured random nature stuff:

cool idea with the kids art. a good "grass roots" type thing that will help the sport grow.
As for my favorite, Highland Park in IL had some great signs. I was there in a group of 4 guys that had never played there before and the signs made it easy to find the pin and know where to throw the first time through. The maps were very accurate. They also had named the holes after people that had helped put the course together, which I though was kind of clever. Stuff like "Debby's Drop" and things like that (I made that one up, but you get the idea.)

I have seen some fantastic signs, once that make me drool and really jealous. I personally love the ones with a digital photo insert on the sign that shows the same view you are getting from the tee.
However, what about cost? $100 a sign can really strain your little local club's budget. I did something fairly simple for a tee sign using an MS Paint drawing and MS Word for the other larger text. You simply print out the page, and laminate it and stick it to some piece of plastic or other board near the tee. You could also send the file to Kinkos or other place and have them print a full hard plastic sign for you. We figure our total cost is roughly $11 for a plastic backing board, metal U-post, hardware, laminating sleeve, and color copy.
The possibilities are endless, if I had even more time and wanted to act on my ambition, I could insert an actual photo on these signs, cut and paste better tree, grass, basket, rough, etc images into the Paint file. Or if I was a better artist or had better software, well you know. This is just a low $$ option available to anyone with a computer basically.
We sell "advertising rights" on these signs too for donations or work provided by adopting the hole and performing maintenance (Floyd sponsored hole 13 here). You can customize the tee sign with your own phrase or nickname. More images are available at the Winter Park Photo tab.

Youth Park in Pinellas park, Florida has the best signs I have ever seen. The sign is an actual picture of the hole from the tee pad with a graphic of the overhead view superimposed and semi-transparent overlaid on the picture with all the distances at the bottom corner. Never seen anything like it. They are sweet! I will see if I can get a picture of one of them posted.
Only problem is some moron wants to write his name real big right over the middle of these beautiful signs for aces. Better hope I don't see him doing that or figure out what his name is from his ridiculous scribbles.

From the threads I've read about reviewing courses and what constitutes a great course, several people dismiss the importance of good signs. I must strongly disagree. From an objective point of view of an ardent casual player good signs are a hallmark of what should be considered a great course. If you are new to a course, you love the game, spent your hard earned money to treavel a distance to place at disc golf Mecca it could totally spoil your day wandering around aimlessly looking for the tees, the basket and the next tee. Whew!
That said, there are several signs here that are ideal. An accurate aerial representation with distances, fairways, significant obstacles, and direction of the next tee are essential. They should be a part of every great course. I am not a fan of the photographic image looking from the tee box. It's great for that first throw but then what? And what about heavily wooded long holes especially with a dog leg or two?
Of the courses few courses that I've played the only one that fits the bill is Emery Park. Unfortunately I do not have a pic.
Another nice touch and a hallmark of a 5 disc course would be a sign showing the course as a whole.
The pics billnchristy shows of Alexander Park is a perfect illustration of what I think is the best kind of signage.

I did try to use the "search" tool to find this thread first... but it didn't work. So I started a new one.
Thanks for helping me find it though.

I didn't mind the new thread, was just trying to help. It is cool though that EricJ merged the threads, and quickly. Those guys do such a great job with this site, especially in light of things like what was going on this morning on these forums. I for one am grateful to have access to such a great resource. I haven't done the "premium" thing yet, mainly because I'm broke. I will as soon as I can.

I agree. I played at Renaissance Park for the first time a few weeks ago. I printed out a course map, and still had a hard time navigating the course. It took 10 minutes just to find the 1st tee, and had a ridiculously hard time finding my way around the back nine. There were really good signs for the first few holes, and then they disappeared. I think if I had printed out the thread on the Charlotte Club's forum about the changes at Renny, and had that with me too, I could have figured it out better. It was frustrating, on top of how challenging that course can be. It's cool that they have put that much work into a course, and it does not go unappreciated. I also feel like it will be a breeze (the navigation not the course) the next time.

[QUOTE=t i m;79383]I don't think signs have to be visually exacting as long as they capture the most important features of a hole....
Great posts!
Didn't read through the entire thread, but in addition to the stuff I see mentioned are that the signs should be bird-proofed so not used as pooping perches, they should be visually pleasing and visible to discers, but no so huge they can be seen from the moon, and they should be vandal-proofed as best as possible. I was surprised how many signs that were indicated as the greatest that were vandalized. Like this girl I know who used to be hot in high school... fond memorizes but it is what it is.
Greatest sign still a holy grail.

I don't have the link to any of them, but I have seen a few tee signs on the course reviews here that indicate elevation, which I think is REALLY cool.
For example, it says 0' at the tee pad then something like -25' or +40' next to each pin position. That, in addition to distances, and a reasonable picture indicating the direction is perfection for me.
While people have mentioned it, I would love to see a pin position indicator, but don't have much faith in them. At Coyote Point, I recall a washer type thing being on the tee, which had A B C D stamped into it and they allegedly rotated it to the appropriate location; however, this was rarely accurate when we went.

Yeah, that hole on the left, in the middle pic was a lot of fun to dig. I've still got remnants of a blister, over a week later.
But seriously though, they're great looking signs, no?

Fountain Hills, AZ has the best signage I've ever seen. Each tee sign has the hole map, positions, distances, accurately plotted trees, etc., but then it goes over the top and they even have a mini map of the entire course on each tee!
This might be too low res to see the details, but you get the idea...

Yep. Actually, there's at least one other sign that has a typo also, though I can't remember which one or what it is offhand.
