Hey, there. So I'd love to hear about, and see, any safari options that people play on regular courses. I understand this wouldn't apply to busy courses, in general. But on sparsely played courses I think that it could be a lot of fun.

I'll post a map, if it works out, of a 9 hole Safari layout that I created for Shawnee State Park in Schellsburg, PA. Link here... http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2788 I've had this idea in mind for a couple of years and never got to actually apply it to the course. Until today, that is! :)

It's just a fun little nine holes. I had some free time and went around the course normally once. Rather than just playing it again, I put my mental plan into action. It was pretty cool. I really put a premium on safety first, and then on the holes themselves. There wasn't another soul on the course so I wasn't worried about running into anyone. I just had to make sure that I kept other park users out of the line of fire, too.

Anyone else?

A bunch of us locals have a few sickly hard safari set ups for West Park in Joliet, IL. We cut it down to 18-20 holes (depending on the set) and use them to play glow rounds. Sadly, the course is way to packed during the day to play it, except maybe weekdays in the really really early morning.

OK... "the sickness" kicked in and I had to just do this (pretty much right after I posted the thread). Here's a map I created that shows the original course layout along with my safari layout. You can't tell, but the pins that are original #6-8 are elevated considerably above the surrounding area. There's basically a ridge that the holes play up and over. So, for example, Safari hole #1 probably plays at least 20' uphill making the effective distance longer. And Safari hole #3 is the opposite, playing downhill making it play shorter. Hopefully this amuses someone.

And doing the Safari map actually encouraged me to add the basic map that I created to the site. http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2788&mode=lf Not that you really need a map to navigate Shawnee, but I really like doing it anyway. Plus my shoulder's too tired to play around Dixie Lee after playing a bunch this morning.

Sweet. I played Shawnee one of the first weekends they were open for a local youth org's fundraiser or something or other. Fun little course. We had the most fun hiking up the hill on the other side of the parking lot and emptying our bags back down to the bottom. Your safari layout looks cool though, I'd love to get back over there and try it out.

I designed gold tees for the 24 holes at my home course, complete with map and photos of each tee. If that sounds interesting at all I could post em.

I've got a safari/supercourse gold layout @ Sugaree, but only break it out for doubles. Tee off from 1 play to 2 basket, 3-4 etc...

Lots of our 9 hole courses have many many safari options that the locals like to play. They definitely up the challenge and fun level of pretty much all of the courses :)

Sure... Or if you have some favorites, it would be cool to compare them to the regular course photos.

When I play my buddies at Middle Creek, if there is a tie at the end we settle it by throwing from 18's basket which is up on a hill back to 17. Here's a pic, you can't see 17's basket in the picture but if you look at the far back tree between the other trees you can see a little circle area that is brown. That's where 17's basket is. It's a 327 toss off a hill, fun stuff.

and then there's the 9 hole course on NC State's campus... I don't think we play even half of the holes the way they set it up.

Hole 15 Gold. Obvious why this isn't a real tee...long tee in the background.

Hole 20 Gold. For those familiar with the course you're throwing from the bridge by 24 short tee to 20's basket. I think it's a touch over 400' to even clear the water, but if you can throw that far it's a pretty easy shot.

To be honest a lot of them kind of sucked, it's been a while since I've used this layout. Couldn't find the map I made either. I'm going to design better ones.

EDIT: Here's the map.

Supercourse is really fun. I have played both of the Burns Park courses in my area like that and that adds a nice challenge to the course.

We don't strictly go from 1 tee to 2 basket etc. , but we keep some of the original holes that wouldn't be fun if done that way, like for holes that are parallel to each other. Both of the layouts we have are 9 holes I believe.

That's what I'm talkin' about! Thanks for the pic!
