The proposed course is located in Acorn Acres Park, which is right next to Thousand Oaks High School. The course is adjacent to Softball Field Two in the far western portion of the park. You can park near the community center off of Moorpark Road and walk past the softball fields or you can drive to the end of Drayton Avenue, which is off of Avenida De Los Arboles. Parking at the end of Drayton Avenue is the quickest way to the course.
Mike Byrne (discfever@aol.com) is working with Matt Kouba of the Conejo Parks & Recreation Department (CPRD) to design, develop and install the course. You can contact either of these individuals if you are interested in helping with the course.
The course will have nine (9) teepads and eighteen (18) baskets. The intended flow will be to play one set of baskets during the front nine and the other set of baskets during the back nine. At present, there are no alternate basket placements.
The current condition of the course is very raw. The teepads, basket placements, locations of trees and mandatories have been staked out so the course is "playable" to a degree. It is close enough to get a feel for how the course will be after fully installed. The ground is composed of churned up dirt with large clods, which makes walking difficult. The CPRD has plans to bring in heavy machinery to flatten out the playing surface and install irrigation systems. The ultimate success or failure of the course will depend on the trees and landscaping. Without trees, the course is very wide open and would not be much fun to play. I have played the course in its current state and did my best to honor the tree locations and mandatories. I shot under par on the rounds I have played using the stakes as targets. I only bogied one hole when I went OB across the jogging path on #13.
Mike Byrne and Matt Kouba will be meeting soon to finalize the design. After that, there will be some work here and there to prep the site over the next few months. The big work day is planned for November with the teepads and baskets being installed and trees planted. It appears we are looking at a mid to late November opening of the course.
If you live nearby, it would be worth checking out and then providing some feedback to Mike and Matt. I would not recommend coming from very far at this time due to rough conditions out there.
I am really excited to have a course so close to me. It is long overdue for this area. They have made good use of the terrain in such a limited space. I tip my hat to these guys for the design they have come up with. I will provide additional updates as I hear word and will provide reviews of the holes in future postings.

There will be a work party out there Saturday July 18th. Contact Mr. Byrne for the time. He plans to flatten tee box areas and mark out tree placements and pin positions.

Thanks for the update on the next work day Tom. Unfortunately, I will be playing in the Santa Maria Open and will miss that one. And it looks I will miss the big work day in November due to playing in the So Cal Am Championships. I'll have to see where else I can chip in and do some work.

I played the course again today after work. On the last work day, they switched out small garden stakes with larger fence posts to indicate basket positions in addition to working on the teepad areas. It was much easier to identify the targets and had a slightly better surface to throw from. I accidently left my putters at home after taking them in the backyard for practice yesterday. I had to use a Classic Roc instead. So with using an alternate putter and only a fence post as a "basket", I shot a (-5) today. Please below for some initial thoughts on the holes. Comments on based on me primarily throwing RHBH.
#1) Shorter position plays to left of teepad with double mandatory trees in fairway. Jogging path to far left is OB. Relatively easy hyzer shot with midrange.
#2) Shortest hole on the course. Plays straight ahead of teepad through trees. Jogging path to left is OB. Should have good shot at birdie and should always par the hole (unless you get freak bounce off of tree that goes OB).
#3) This hole is longer than the first two and plays even longer since it is up a hill. Basket is to the left of the teepad and is protected by a large tree on its right. There is mandatory right of the telephone to the left of the teepad. Need a a big hyzer to get it around the telephone pole and up the hill.
#4) Short downhill shot. Basket will be slightly off to the right of the teepad. There will be a row of trees on the crown of the hill that will present a challenge to either "thread the needle", go around or go over. Jogging path behind and to the right is OB. The rough behind and to the left may become OB as well. I have had success "threading the needle" in between two stakes standing in for trees.
#5) Short uphill shot. Basket will be straight ahead of teepad. There will be a tree in the middle of the fairway that will be a mandatory to the left. Either need to an anhyzer/turnover or a thumber works really well.
#6) Longer hole that plays down into a half-bowl basin. Straight shot that is protected on the right by very thick rough and on the left there is a huge thornbursh that could swallow up your disc. Everytime I have played there has been a steady headwind. I have been successful throwing a Firebird here.
#7) This a blind shot up hill to a medium-long wide open position. There is a lage bush dead in front of and to the left of the teepad. You either need to throw a big hyzer to get around the bush and up the slope or use an overhand shot. I definitely recommend a thumber as it takes the bush and tree on the right of the fairway out of the equation and gets you right to the basket.
#8) Shorter hole that is straight away from teepad. However, there is a tree in the middle of the fairway with a mandatory left. Relatively easy anhyzer/turnover with a Leopard to put it close.
#9) Where do I begin with this one?? I am not sure if it is challenging or trying too hard to be difficult and comes off "gimmicky". Basket is in a medium-long position straight ahead of teepad. However, there are four sets of mandatories down the fairway. First up is an arch about 50-60' from the teepad. You must throw between the side posts (10' wide) and under the top posts (7' tall) to pass this one sucessfuly. Then there are three sets of double mandatory trees lining the fairway at 50-60' intervals. The fairways in between the trees is only about 30-40' wide. I managed to par the hole after laying up with a midrange and then getting close with another midrange. Seemed way too risky to gun a driver down the middle.
It's getting late and I've already written a lot so I will follow up with the back nine later this week. Hope this helps give you an idea of how the course is shaping up. Have a good night!

Wow, I've never seen a course with that many mandatories. I always think it's a lot when there's 3-4 per 18 holes, let alone 4 on the last hole and a bunch more throughout the course. Either way, it's great that that area is getting a new course, keep us updated!

I believe that some of the tees have been dug out. No baskets until October-November at least. Last I checked there were just sticks in the ground with the basket and tee numbers on them.
If any of your trip falls on a weekday let me know. It's on my way home from work.

It was fun meeting DGCR members in person. Will see zenbot again in a few weeks at the Coyote Classic.
As far as the course goes... It is still in a pretty raw condition. Actually, it has regressed a little because some of the teepads are not marked with stakes anymore and the pole for #2 is missing. It was particularly hard for zenbot and dreadlock86 to try to navigate the course before I showed up. I was only able to do so because I had seen/played the course when it was marked a little better. Unless you are very close by, I would still advise you stay away until the concrete is poured and baskets installed in November.

Ahh! Now I understand why you asked if I was going for the mandy or not when I threw straight at it. I thought you both were just practicing your anhyzers. I didn't catch that the mandatory was to the left of the tree.

I live in the area and heard about the course a few weeks ago. I ventured out to find it this weekend and when I parked on Drayton, I see a set of wooden steps and a fence with some yarded up digging equipment. I thought this was a good sign but when I walked up the steps all I saw was a lot of dirt and no baskets. Is the course now being developed, or am I just in the wrong place? I didn't find anything.

I have stopped by recently. Course is moving along slowly but surely. Baskets are in for 1/10, 2/11, 3/12, 4/13, 6/15 and 9/18. Big circular concrete teepads have been put in for 6/15 and 9/18. I am guessing they are circular to allow for change in direction and/or safari play. Will have to ask Mike B. about this next time I see him. Also, a large mound has been built up on 9/18 to allow for an elevated basket placement. The rest of the course still has dirt teepads and fence post targets so you can still get a feel for the course. Most of the basket sleeves have been set so those baskets should be up soon. There are trees and benches by the baskets for 2/11. I am guessing they will be put in very soon as well. Things are looking real good!
And on a side note, I think my favorite hole so far is the long placement on 6/15 (not sure if it's #6 or #15 yet). It's about 360ish with elevation drop. The basket plays midway up the hill on the other side of a bowl-like valley. There is a dangerous large buckthorn bush that is short left if your drive stalls out early. There is very thick brush along the entire rightside of the fairway if you aim poorly or turnover your disc. This may become OB but it is so thick that you're screwed even if it's not. And to top it off there is usually a steady headwind right in your face. Definitely makes you work!

There are only 2 cement teepads right now. I couldn't tell you how many complete holes there were. Most pin "areas" have several baskets in the same vicinity. Blue, red, or yellow. I'm not sure that I'm fond of this setup...unless I'm on one of the many cards that gets a black ace. There will be many.

@ zenbot
From what I can tell, the Yellows and Blues will have at least one alternate position each. So sometimes they will be close like they are now and then other times they will be a little farther apart. The Reds do not appear to have any alternate positions at this time so they will be stationary for the near future.
@apothecary
There are actually zero complete holes at this time. A complete hole would be a teepad and all three baskets in place. 6/15 and 9/18 are the closest right now. They both have teepads and Yellow and Blue baskets, but no Red baskets. Even once all of the holes have teepads and three baskets, it might take some time to finalize the course with planting trees and establishing OB & Mandatories. Based on the cuurent pace, I would say the "final" version is right on target for the scheduled May 2010 grand opening. In the meantime, it's nice to be able to get out there and play the "rough draft" to get an idea of what it will be like in afew months.

@flash
are the basket colors intended to be comparable to rec/am/pro or is it just to distinguish 1-9 and 10-18 and the kiddo baskets? will the blues be longer?
flash86
02-03-2010, 11:33 PM
If you look at the course map that was just posted in the Links section of the course home page, you will see that the Yellows and Blues alternate in length so it appears that they are just to differentiate the hole numbers rather than indicating length and/or skill level. The Reds are intended for Youth and Novices (... but I am sure they will be fun for everyone else to play in a ace race or practicing short to medium game).

I agree as well. After you get stuck in there just once, it definitely makes you re-think how you're going to throw the next time around.

I'm putting a lot of miles on the car just to get to the closest courses. So needless to say, I am looking forward to the next work day! (This might be an interesting thread in the forums... "How far away is the nearest course to you?" Would be interesting to see how far people drive for a "close" course like I do. And I didn't even mention how far I usually drive to play other courses like Oak Grove, La Mirada, Chavez Ridge and El Dorado on a fairly regular basis)

Anyone else notice how many views this particular thread has received in relation to the other courses in development? Either a few of us are very obsessive or a lot of people are interested in getting a course installed in this area???

Latest message from the Conejo Disc Golf Group on Yahoo:
Hi friends and fellow disc golf enthusiasts.
It's time to pull out and mark your calendars for several free, no charge, days of exercise at Rabbit Flats!
The course grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony is set for May 8, so we need to get busy!
The incredible amount of storms and rain that have come through may have delayed our work days at the course, but I'm sure we'll be able to rally together and get Rabbit Flats ready for play.
We have 15 out of 27 baskets in the ground and 2 of the 9 tees.
There is work to be done suitable for anyone. From the heavy lifting variety, to some light trimming of vegetation.
Please join the CRPD, me, the Conejo Disc Golf Assoc. and other disc golf enthusiasts on:

Latest message from Mike Byrne on Rabbit Flats DGC.....
Hi all,
Some local Cub Scouts planted some "Butterfly" shrubs on the fairways of holes 1 and 10.
Some of the fairways have been "flailed" (mowed), as has been the island landing zone of hole 13 (yellow basket). This landing zone is an island for hole 13, and a lake when playing hole 4 (blue basket).
Some carsonite posts have been put in for tee signs and look great.
THIS SATURDAY, MARCH 6 IS A WORK DAY!!!! :-)
PLEASE BE THERE TO HELP.
The plan is to whack some weeds, trim away some dead stuff, and put in the rest of the green bucket (valve boxes) that protect and cover the basket sleeves. So bring some water, gloves, shovel, and pruning shears or clippers.
My kids have their last soccer game of the season, so I'll be getting there at 11:45, but with boxes of pizza and bevs, to make up for being late. :-)
Take care, see you soon, and say a prayer that it doesn't rain! I know, we need RAIN! But just not on our RF work days! :-)

So exactly what time will people be showing up over at the course?? I pan on coming over to help out but don't wanna be there by myself waiting on people to show if i am early. I am new to the sport and don't know anyone that plays around here so i am looking forward to meeting people that like to play...

Please come out for a day or two this Friday and Saturday, March 19 and 20, and help work on the course.
We’ll be starting at 9 AM. If you can’t make it at 9, come as soon as you can.
There’s lots to do. Bring your water, sun screen, and gloves. Other useful items if available: concrete tools, shovels, wheel barrows, pruning shears/clippers, gas weed whacker. If you don’t have any of this, come anyway!
I’ll pick up some pizza and beverages for lunch.
I hope to see you there!

I forgot to mention that more baskets were being put in while I was there. I think the only holes without them are 7 and 8.
It was great talking to the guy from the city that Mike's been working with. He wasn't a DGer before all of this and we had a good conversation about all the courses he's been to since. I could see the look in his eyes.

Uh yeah. I just saw that this is today. There's another work day coming up.
Help plant some trees, or whack some weeds!!!
RF is looking more like a DG course everyday, but we need more help.
So, come out Friday, lend a hand, and play some golf. There are 26
baskets up and ready.
Bring some gloves, a shovel, water, gas weed whacker :-) , pruning
shears/clippers, discs.
Remember, those lending a hand get priority registration for RF 1st
disc golf tourney, May 22! The field will be very limited!
RF is located at the western most end of Thousand Oaks Community Park,
on Moorpark Rd., next to the TO High School.
Hope to see you at 9 AM!

This is from a Mike Byrne email.
Hi all,
Please come out to Rabbit Flats Disc Golf Course in Thousand Oaks this Saturday April 17 in the morning (9 AM, or as soon as you can) and lend a hand planting, watering, spreading mulch, trimming, whacking...
We really need to cut the weeds and trim the overgrowth above the baranca. And 2 sleeves need concrete.
Bring gloves, water, clippers, shovel, gas weed whacker if available.
Bring your discs too of course. There will be time to golf.
The course is really coming together. All tees are ready for use, and tee signs are up now!
Matt Kouba, CRPD Parks Superintendent will have info. on RF 1st tourney and Grand Opening May 22. Remember, priority to play in Rabbit Flats 1st tourney goes to those that help with the course! :-)
Hope you can make it! Sorry, but I can't be there. :-(
So, it's up to you to pick up the slack for me!

played today and took pictures of the signs as well as the fairways. most of the pics are too big to upload. i could probably figure it out myself but i was thinking if anyone is good with photo editing then they could resize them and circle the baskets in color coding since they are kinda hard to see.
if anyone is interested in the task let me know and i can send you the pics.
i also input the hole distances according to the signs but some of them are clearly wrong as a few of the basket positions have been moved. if anyone has any info on the new basket positions and distances...

I can do the resizing for you, but a REALLY simple way to do it yourself (albeit one at a time) is at this site: http://www.photosize.com/
Just resize them to 800 pixels (width) and they will work in the DGCR database. Would love to see some more pictures added to the Rabbit Flat profile.

its all about irfanview with the RIOT plugin. lets you batch resize the pics and the actual size of the data in one easy step and is FREEEE!

Request from Matt:
Hello everyone,
Due to some bad timing of waterline breaks, tree deliveries, volunteer work
party cancellations etc. Not all the trees have been planted and/or properly
watered. I purchased 800' of hoses today and put them up. PLEASE water
whatever you can when you are out at the course. If the crpd guys can get the
rest of them in the dirt next week we should only lose a few of them. Thanks
for everyone's help out there!
Be Good,
Matt

I have never been on a forum where they save the weird stuff in a land fill, I love this forum. Awesome I went and re read it and it was just as funny as when it happend live.
So I played this course like a week ago and thought it was well done with the little land available. I had no problem reaching any of the holes and liked the elevation changes. I got some good practice with my forehand. Hole 7 was pretty easy to reach in the long position with my flat top ce valk. Hole 6 was my favorite. Good job guys.
