I'll be in Lansing (Haslett) on Monday around noon. I know I want to play Grand Woods, and that MSU has been pulled for the month. What's the next best course to play within a reasonable driving distance? And is anyone available to guide? Thanks!
:edit: After a quick glance, the farthest I'd like to drive would be Lincoln Park in Charlotte.

I would be able to play with you if you decided to come out to either Lincoln Park, or Lake Alliance (Potterville). I've only been to Lake allinace once, but I know Lincoln Park pretty well. It definetly doesn't compare to Grand Woods, but the reviews describe it pretty well. Front nine is farily short and somewhat technical, and back nine is more open and long.

Interesting question... I'll take a stab at it.
Fitzgerald is damn near impossible to navigate unless you have a guide. If you can find someone to play with, it's probably the second best course in the area. There are a couple of holes there that match up with anything I've ever played in terms of jaw-dropping scenery.
I played Lake Alliance today, and the two star rating is pretty accurate. Not really worth your time.
I've also played the front nine at Lincoln Park. It isn't really worth your time, either. But it's probably a better bet than Lake Alliance as long as you don't go in expecting much. The back nine is supposed to be more challenging than the front, but I didn't get a chance to play it.
I don't really know much about Valley Farms, but the reviews make it sound average at best.

So there are your options... if you can get someone who knows what they're doing to show you around Fitz, that's your best option... otherwise you're looking at Grand Woods and then your choice of mediocrity. Are you sure you can't make the drive to Hudson Mills? ;)
Unfortunately, I have to work or I'd be glad to drive over and get a couple of rounds in.

Yeah, Hudson Mills is out of the question, even though I have yet to play The Monster. My family will be in Haslett watching my wife's friend's kids, and I'm not sure how much time I'll have. I'd rather not be an hour away and get a phone call that they're ready to leave ;)
So, anyone out there willing to be a guide for Grand Woods and Fitzgerald on Monday, say between noon and 1?

#1 Fitz Park in grand ledge (You must find a local to play with or you WILL probably miss the best holes)
#2 Grand woods (great course when its not flooded)
#3 Lake Alliance (this course has alot of aceable holes and a couple unique holes, I had a good time here)
#4 Make sure you check out InFlight Sports for a HUGE selection.
I would love to make a trip out there and guide for you but I have work monday :(

Well, I'll probably be at Grand Woods around 1 or 2PM tomorrow. I'll have a black Lightning bag and be sucking my way through a round if anyone wants to join me :D I'll play Fitzgerald after that.

Let me know how it goes. I want to go back to Fitzgerald this year... if it's easier to get around than I remember it being I'll go for sure.

I actually liked Fitz better than Grand Woods, despite the navigational issues, the natural pads, and the strange layout to start the back 9. LOVED holes 6 and 13, we don't get much elevation change in NW Ohio :D One of my more enjoyable rounds, in spite of my 61
:edit: I did pass Hudson Mills on the way home, but i doubt they'd have let me in for a glow round at 10pm ;)

I like Fitz better than grand woods too, the only real problem with Fitz is the lack of navigation, but the layout is awsome. Good to here you had a fun time!

+1 for Fitz over Grand Woods. Its just a nicer atmosphere imo. Less trashed than Grand Woods, more of an escape from Lansing - Grand Ledge is an appealingly quaint town.

Yeah, I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to step on toes, but I won't be playing Grand Woods again... it just wasn't much fun when I played it last year. Folks in Lansing seem to thing it's the bees knees for some reason.
Glad to hear you had a good time!

Damn, some how I missed this. I live about 5-10 minutes from both Grand Woods, and Fitz. I would have met up with you and showed you around. I learned to play at Grand Woods but would have to say that I prefer Fitz over the woods. Grand Woods is crazy over played, usually packed with casuals, and the course is really starting to suffer from over use and vandalism. Its really a shame.:(
Hope you had fun out @ Fitz its a fun course!

+1 on casuals at the woods. IMHO, there are a few slight navigational issues there too, mostly holes 5 and 16. I actually skipped hole 5 because I thought I had to throw into the swamp instead of around it. The basket cannot be seen from the tee. I'm glad there was a lineup at 13, because I'd have skipped that one as well. All told, it was a good day of DG, but Fitz was definitely more enjoyable.

I used the search so I'm reviving an old thread...
I'll be playing in lansing on tuesday but only have time for one course. I have played grand woods and lake alliance and wasn't impressed. I'm trying to decide between fitzgerald park and burchfield park.
