Battle for the Border: Michigan V. Ohio

June 1st-3rd, 2012

We want to invite all Ohio and Michigan DGCR Members to the first Battle for the Border: Michigan V. Ohio. The Battle will take place in the greater Ann Arbor, Michigan area at Hudson Mills and Kensington Metro Parks. Bring your friends and family and come for the weekend.

Information

Players Packs
We will be selling a player's pack for the event. Items have been voted on and the packs are to include:

1 Glow KC Pro Roc
1 Champion TL
1 Dri-fit Polo
1 Acrylic Event Bag Tag

Price: $35.00

The price is well worth it. The discs will be custom stamped for our event, along with custom artwork on the bag tags and polo shirts. The bag tags are very professionally done with the custom artwork that we choose and each are individually numbered, just like bag tags for club events.

*You do not have to purchase a player's pack to attend, however, once the deadline for orders has passed no additional packs can be ordered and there will not be extras at the event for purchase.

Prizes
If anyone has anything they are willing to donate for prizes that would be great. Discs, shirts, hats, anything really, just contact an event coordinator via PM with any donations.

Disc Golf Events

Team Event (2 Rounds)
Singles Round
Ace Race
Glo Round
Ring of Fire

*All events are free to enter (excluding ace pots). Prizes will be donations provided by those attending the event.

I'd be interested to come up and just throw some discs. I don't really care about competing or getting a players pack though.

You are more than welcome to just come up. I haven't talked to the other two, but competing nor buying a pack is required. Everyone should keep in mind though, those that attended the Ohio meet can vouch, all competitions are all based on having fun and are played very casually. There will be prizes for winners, but nothing too extravagant and there is no payment required to enter, all events are free. I'm sure all those who have attended will say that playing in the events is just like playing in a group of friends on the course.

Its going to be a pretty laid back event. Battle for the Border might sound a bit intimidating lol I'm sure if you just want to come and throw that shouldn't be a problem.

Wood Pecker

Never tense with any meet that we will ever do, just think of it as a bunch of friends getting together and throwing a round. it will def be when the warmer weather comes around

Haha, no bailing. We have a list of courses around the Ann Arbor are to choose from. We are going to post the list in a poll and go with the course(s) that the majority wants with all of the others being close enough that people will be able to play them throughout the weekend.

The list will probably be as follows:

Hudson Mills (Both Courses)
Independence Lake - Red Hawk
The Black Locust Course
Bass Benton
Rolling Hills

Once we have a base course I will provide camping info and we will start a poll for the dates. Right now we are thinking last weekend in May through the third weekend in June as options so that the possibility to play the Toboggan course is there as well for those brave enough to take the challenge. I haven't checked into that, as far as when the course will be in the ground so that might change. We won't be having any events at the Toboggan but it's definitely worth catering to it, I know a lot of people would love to get the chance to tackle it.

Actually looks like the USADGC is the second weekend in June, so we would not want to choose that weekend, but maybe the last weekend in May or the first weekend of June would be best, but like I said, we'll get a poll up and probably just go with what the majority wants.

All the rounds at the Ohio meet had a very casual atmosphere. Three of our foursome in the singles round were concentrating on helping the one noob player we had on our card. It was fun.

Rolling Hills and Cass Benton, IMO, are too far away from the others. If we're there on a weekend Toboggan is open, it's all a moot point. That will likely be the only course we play that day.

Well we want Toboggan to be there for folks to play, but we don't really want to hold an event there. It's too difficult of a course for everyone to have even a remote shot at a fair chance.

I haven't talked it over with everyone but I think it would be a good idea to not go too heavy on planned events. Maybe like Friday do the ace race thing and then the team event on Saturday with the Singles round sunday. that would be just a couple of hours on each day with the rest of the time open for people to play whatever courses they choose.

Couldn't make the C'Bus meetup, so I'm REALLY hoping that I can get there for this one. Thinking of making it a weekend getaway with the fam -- there's stuff in and around Ann Arbor for them to do while I'm on the course.

Not sure I'm ready to brave the Toboggan course yet -- my distance is getting better but I'm still pretty noodlish.

We'll probably let this thread go for a couple of days, then we'll post the course options in a poll and go from there. I just want to make sure there is enough interest before we get all gung ho on the planning. It's looking good so far though, I'm sure we won't have any issues getting enough people to come out for this.

Another idea I just had is since we are planning on doing this multiple times, if it goes well, is to have some sort of trophy that we pass back and forth from year to year to the winning team. Sort of grudge match style.

As far as the tobaggan, while i love playing there and am usually there for most of the time its open, its not really the best course to make friends...

I would say that we'll have the location and dates set by the end of this month. Hopefully that should be plenty of time for everyone to get their plans made and get the time off work if need be.

Wood Pecker, The Govna, and I were thinking end of May early June, like I said so the Toboggan course will be in. Hopefully that will be good for everyone, I know Mobster wanted July, but we lose a course at that point and a damn good one that everyone should play at least once in their disc golf careers. So go ahead and plan on that time frame.

The Toboggan is going to be more of an extra course, we aren't planning on holding an actual event there, but I wanted it to be in the ground for anyone that wants to tackle it. What we'll do is have one course for the team event, one for the singles, and then the rest of the time will be open to play all of the rest of the courses casually. There's tons of great, great courses all around the area for everyone to enjoy.

Cass is normally packed with local chuckers, from what I understand, so it may be tough to get any kind of organized event going there. Rolling Hills (or Ponds at Lakeshore, which is another good option in Ypsi) would be too far away from Hudson Mills and Indy Lake to make it really worthwhile. Right now I'm liking the Hudson Mills, Indy Lake, Kensington combo. Both Hudson Mills courses can be easily done in 1 day, which I'd recommend because there is a $2 wrist band you're required to have, as well as parking. Black Locust should be on a 1-event day to give people the Toboggan option later in the day if they'd like. All are great courses within a short drive of one another and we've got CJ's in the middle of all 3. CJ's is a great party/disc store. Prices are a bit higher, but being a brick and mortar, you'd expect that. Already looking forward to the end of May :D

Who won there really? Can we say no one won since isn't the UP like the biggest welfare area in Michigan? If thats really the case, that's saying something with Detroit in the state.

The UP. A nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

Like Wood Pecker said we talked a little about what to do with these folks an, while nothing is set in stone yet, we figured we could use them to balance out the teams and/or use them as free agents of sorts and either let them either pick their team, or draw for teams, or whatever.

For you guys that haven't played Indy, you'll love it. Out of all the courses listed I personally thinks its the best. I've played all of the courses listed and a couple others in the area and Indy has everything you look for in a championship course, yet its playable by various skill levels having three sets of tees, although I think the red tees were natural. If that does end up being one of our chosen courses you all won't be dissappointed.

Are we going to try to set up a glow round again on Friday night?

The nine-hole Bandameer course in Ann Arbor is a great Glow opportunity. Night golf can be played there year-round since the gates never get shut. While only 9 holes, there are three sets of tees for considerable variety. Mostly woodsy holes = easy searches since there's not much tall grass to hide discs in. Closing times at most other area courses aren't late enough to allow night play during the summer months. I'd suggest golfing elsewhere during the day, taking in a local brew pub for supper, then a trip to Bandy to aid in digestion.

I think you're a little late there bud. Check the DGCR Meets sub forum. I think it was last year or the year before, either way someone beat you to the punch on that.

As for the Glo round I would say a definite yes after the fun that ensued last year, not sure though whether we should go with an actual course or do what we did for the ohio meet and make our own at the campground. Plenty of time to get all that figured out th ough.

Looks like Black Locust and Indy are neck and neck. Both are great courses for sure. If it does end up being Black Locust I know the perfect spot for all of us to camp, its going to be ****ing awesome.

Either way is fine with me. I'm not sure where we'd be camping, but Bandemer is right off US-23 on the North side of Ann Arbor, a real quick drive from Indy

Any reason we couldn't do both? I'm assuming both Hudson Mills courses will be done on the same day because of the cost to park and the wristband.

I figure that all the courses on the list and some that aren't, but we are only going to schedule just a couple events, to give people more free time to play whatever courses they choose, and the poll winners will be the courses where we hold the events. So let's say Hudson Mills and Black Locust are the top vote getters we will probably be doing the team event at Hudson Mills and the Singles round at Black Locust then the rest of the weekend will be free for whatever.

Also just so everyone is aware, Hudson Mills and Black Locust are the same park system and once you pay to play at one you can play on the other as well as long as it is in the same day.

Indy Lake and Rolling Hills are the same way, once you pay to get into Indy you can play Rolling Hills the same day at no extra charge.

Cass's 2 biggest problems are chuckers (commonly referred to as C@ssholes) and upkeep. When I was there 2 years ago, there were trees lying down all over the wooded fairways and some SERIOUS erosion on the open elevated fairways. From what I hear, it's worse now. I'd still play it again though :hfive:

roadtripstuff
01-14-2012, 04:56 PM
I played cass back in june and it wasn't that bad there was still some erosion and tee signs that needed replaced but they had removed the down trees. One of the worst things they did was remove all the emerald ashborer trees, but its still a fun course and i will most likely play it when im there.

I could see a glow round at Bandemer - only nine baskets with 27 concrete tees is a plus. not a lot of thick grass, but there are a coule of blind pin placements - maybe just play from those from the white tees.

It's definitely fun for everyone no matter your skill level.

Alright guys, so there's a new plan as far as the polls go. We are going to just start another thread with a poll for the date and leave the courses poll open until at least Friday. The new poll with the dates will be going up this evening around 7-8 so watch for that and make sure to get your votes in. We want as many people to come to this as possible so hopefully we can get the dates right and everyone will be able to make it out. We will leave the dates poll open for at least two weeks and once that is closed the courses and dates will be official so look for that to happen around the first of February.

Once we get the dates and locations figured out I'll start taking PMs for donations, prizes and what not and keep list of what we going to have and I'll also start working on the camping info. I know of a couple nice small campgrounds and I know they have sites available for all of the date options so we should be set on camping once everything is settled.

Keep the chat and ideas coming guys, glad to see everyone is excited about this.

FYI - I e-mailed the folks at Ann Arbor Area DG Club (http://www.a3disc.org/) (they are the predominant club for events at Hudson Mills, and to a lesser extent, Kensington), just so we'd know if there were any events already scheduled that we might have to work around:

"You are good to go our events around there are on May 7th and Jun 20th.
Thanks for checking.

Kensington does have a sunday doubles league"

Pretty sure the Kensington Sunday doubles league starts up around noon'ish (will try to find out for sure).

Thanks, for the info Dwayne, that's awesome. The real problem, besides being hung over, lol, is that everyone will have to pack up their campsite on Sunday morning before the round. That could take some time. As it gets closer we'll start talking schedule and see what time everyone will be leaving Sunday afternoon and what not and go from there.

I'm really excited though, these courses are awesome, the area itself is beautiful and wait until you all see the campground. The only issues that some of you might have is that the campground is primitive. Cold water pumps and outhouse style toilets, but it's small, only about 25 sites in the whole campground and it sits right on one of the hundreds of small lakes in the area. Last time we camped there I think a ranger maybe came through once, if at all. It's going to be great.

We haven't got quite into those details yet, but like I said probably something along those line. I'm open to any suggestions that you guys may have.

From page 3 I think.

To address ejvogie's comment about playing Indy instead of Black Locust, that could definitely be an option. I know that you have to play to play and it seems like it would make sense to play both Hudson Mills courses on the same day, but they are both on the same park system and if we pay at Hudson Mills we can play Black Locust the same day at no extra charge. Either way we would have to pay the same amount of money. I don't know if that makes sense, but if you have any questions, let me know.

I really think this is coming along nicely and we hope to nail down some more details soon. We'll start talking player's packs and artwork for the stamps, costs, etc. We'll also start posting lodging options, I'm sure most will either be local or camp, but we will gather some info on good fairly cheap hotels in the area as well for those of you that would rather go that route.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas feel free to post them, it would be great and make sure everyone has a good time.

Russell should be doing well considering the mild winter weather we've been enjoying. I've played Mt Airy 7 times within the last week....sloppy.

Im not sure what my role is in the upcoming nuptials other than acting as caretaker for my mother during the ceremony and reception but if it's feasable, I will attempt the trip if able. Hopefully, there will not be any rehearsals.
I spent a few months during sophomore year of high school in Ann Arbor, would be interesting to drive by Pioneer High School to see the old school. I believe the school has a low rated course on its property.

Sidewinder would always be nice....we were thinking maybe a putter too? Keep those Ideas coming. Innova is just one of the simpler ways to go and they offer nice extra swag when you order bulk which can be turned around for extra prizes in the rounds. Kinda two birds, one stone deal.

I honestly thought about using them since we are on their home turf, but last time I checked you had to order a minimum of 100 discs which kind of put them out of our range. I just have my Roc and Leopard from last year just hanging on the wall, so the manufacturer wouldn't necessarily matter to me. But yeah, the amount you have to order and what Wood Pecker mentioned, the amount of free schwag that Innova provides, make Innova the front runner.

Hopefully we'll get as good a turnout as we did last time, but so far it's not looking great. I figure it will pick back up when warmer weather gets here and as it gets closer people will be able to commit knowing what dates they will have available.

As for the discs, I like at least a putter and a roadrunner and sidewinder are great suggestion. Both are great intermediate drivers, easy for most people to throw. We'll probably get a list of a few to choose from and then go with what the majority wants.

I did just go back and check on discraft and they still have a minimum order of 100 so I don't think that will be even close to feasible, so probably going to end up with Innova again. As for the colors, they pic the colors at the factory and then what we did was let people choose from what's available based on the order I received the payment, first to pay gets first choice, second to gets second choice, etc. Hopefully everyone will get something they like.

Haha, yeah, no Discmania. You basically have a list of molds and plastics to choose from, they don't do custom stamps on all of their molds.

Speaking of though, looks like we will once again be going with Innova since they offer the lowest minimum order and offer the best deal. Don't know if I will be able to post the entire list, but if anyone has any suggestions let us know and we can check the list. I'll start going through the selecting what are the most popular molds, Aviars, Rocs, Leopards, Eagles, Valkyries, etc and we'll start getting everyone's opinions. Once we settle on the mold and plastics we'll work on getting prices out to everyone.

Looks like the Teebird is an early front runner, awesome. Anyone else have any ideas? Maybe a Teebird and a putter or mid? Maybe another fairways driver or higher speed driver like a Sidewinder or Valk, something not too fast for beginners and intermediate players? What plastic types do you want to see? Star Teebird, Champ, DX?

If you guys do order and aren't able to attend we can definitely arrange something since we'll be so close, hell I'll drop them off myself if I have to.

Just a thought: I was thinking about some sort of line drawing showing the two states with their positions excatly as the really are, but without a line to gesignate border between them, with the following printed inside the two states on the angle; from upper left (in Michigan) to lower right (in Ohio), because that would kind fit well within the states.

I definitely like the idea of the outline of the two states, that was kinda what I was thinking to begin with, just didn't know where to go from there really. The only thing I would be concerned with is the words "Battle for the Border" etc fitting inside the state and still meeting the requirements for the stamp.

Basically the states together would have to be the size of the a normal stamp and I'm not sure if the words would fit and still be the correct size to meet Innova's specs. Definitely a great place to start though.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Alright guys and gals, we're working on a list of discs to choose from and this is what we have so far:

JK Pro Aviar
KC Pro Aviar
R-Pro XD
Teebird
Eagle
Firebird
Roadrunner
Sidewinder
Valkyrie

As you can see I didn't add a plastic for the drivers because I was not sure what the majority of you guys would want. Most of the drivers come in both Champion and Star as well as DX, the one major exception is with the Teebird. Only the TL and the Teebird+ are available in champion plastic, the Teebird and TL are available in star, and of course it's also available in DX.

If you guys have any questions let us know and we'll do our best to answer them or find the answers and let us know what type of plastics you would prefer. Once we settle on the plastics we'll either start a poll or just have you guys PM one of us or something.

I'm sure they'll do Star & Champ, but that'll likely drive up cost. If they'll do Pro-line, that's a good way to keep cost down, and still get good plastic. Not a fan of DX in drivers (I seem to hit more trees with drivers than mids/putters, and typically harder, too).

Saw some of the comments and thought I could provide a little more info to help us choose.

We have a couple of options that we can go with for shirts. We can either go with the same style last year, dri-fit tshirt, or we can go with dri-fit polos for $5 extra per pack.

Here's some examples of how we could do the packs with pricing:

1 Champ Disc
1 Star Disc
Dri-Fit Tshirt
Bag Tag
Microfiber towel
$33

1 DX Disc
1 Champ or Star Disc
Dri-Fit Tshirt
Bag Tag
Microfiber towel
$30

1 Champ Disc
1 Star Disc
Dri-Fit Polo Shirt
Bag Tag
Microfiber towel
$38

1 DX Disc
1 Champ or Star Disc
Dri-Fit Polo Shirt
Bag Tag
Microfiber towel
$35

Of course there are a couple of other combos we could do, Star & Pro, DX & Pro, etc, but that will give you a basic idea of what we are looking at. Those prices would include everything, the cost of the discs with custom stamps, the paragon tshirts, tags, and towels, plus cover the cost of shipping all of the schwag. (from the factory to one of the organizers, packs will be distributed at the meet)

Well the towel is part of the package. I think we could buy just the shirts and bag tags, but I think it would be more because we would have to buy them individually. Now I'm not positive on that and will check with the company to find out for sure, I definitely know what you mean about the microfiber. Hahaha, unfortunately the condor isn't an option for our event, that would be kinda awesome though.

I'm kind of leaning toward the first pack as well. Not much more than last years with two premium plastic discs, the only option I see being better is a champ or star with a pro disc where we could do a driver and a putter combo. Wouldn't mind setting up nice complements to last years discs, so something like a Champ TL and a JK or KC Aviar.

I also like the thought of adding in another mid to the mix as well, but not sure what would even be a viable option. They have most of their mids in DX only which are Cobra, Shark, Stingray, but they do have a Star Mako. Not sure if any of those would even get enough votes to be considered though. Just a thought.
