Are there any courses along my route that should be replaced, especially in Denver and Minneapolis? I don't necessarily want to play hard courses since I'll be playing 3-4 courses a day but I also don't want to play anything that's a waste of my time.

I've never attempted a road trip like this so I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions you might have. If anyone out there would like to play their home course with me I'd sure appreciate playing with a guide as I'll likely never play most of these courses again and would like to have a good first/last impression. Thanks in advance.

Found a typo... Cheyenne is obviously in Wyoming, not Colorado.

i've played a few times in denver and i'm forwarning you, don't overextend yourself...those courses are at high elevation, some on terrain that isn't the easiest to traverse, but they are all beautiful and well worth the drive. I'm gonna suggest one to you that's in a town just west of Denver called Arvada. http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=581 (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=581) johnny roberts DGC...it's not strenuous, it's, well it was, in a lush, green park...and the creek running through the whole thing can be very refreshing. Good luck man, i hope 4 courses a day, plus 200+ miles of driving doesn't kill you. And remember, whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

have fun and travel safe

A few thoughts from someone who grew up in Denver, lived for 10 years in Minnesota, and played most of the upper Midwest...

1) On 9/2, I'd substitute Expo Park in Aurora for Lorenz Park. Lorenz is just not satisfying to play; you'll expend more energy hunting for discs in the thick brush than you will on the slightly longer (but more enjoyable) Expo. Neither is painful, but Expo just makes more sense. It's also closer to the other Denver stops you're making. Oh, and if you want to tack on a 9 that will take about 20 minutes, hit Ken Caryl DGC.

2) I'm concerned about your agenda on 9/3. Badlands and Ghost Town would be a full day for anyone (and this coming from a guy who's done 63 holes in 3 states in a day). Be careful with Ghost Town; the owner requires specific tee times, and will walk you through a bunch of rules for the round that make it take longer than you'd think. Don't get me wrong, it is a truly unforgettable course, and I HIGHLY recommend it, but be aware that two more courses after the crazy and far-away Ghost Town is pretty unrealistic.

3) From Fargo to Minneapolis, you could tack on a cute, easy 12 in Alexandria, MN called Fillmore Park. And as for your choices in the Twin Cities, most locals would scoff at Staring and Bassett Creek as not representative of the quality of the area, which is kinda true, but I understand your approach and think they're fine. Other enjoyable and quick courses that I'd put above them, however, include the 12-hole Plymouth Creek and Highland Park (9) in St. Paul. This is just the tip of the iceberg in the Twin Cities, though. SO many to choose from, it's hard to pick a handful.

4) At the end of your day in the Cities, you can add another state -- Wisconsin -- by popping over to Willow River State Park right across the border in Hudson. It's a fun 13-hole course, but it costs $10 to get into the park.

5) On the way down I-35, you could very easily tack on two more 9s, right off the highway, in Story City (exit 124) and Coulter (Firebird DGC). Your Des Moines choices are good; you're avoiding the super-exhausting kings of the area (Pickard, Ewing, and Big Creek). Sugar Bottom is a great one in North Liberty.

6) If you're driving through the Quad Cities (Bettendorf, IA, etc.), I'd highly recommend playing one of these two very satisfying/enjoyable 18s: Middle Park in Bettendorf, IA or Longview Park in Rock Island, IL.

I'll cut myself off now. Have a great time! Let me know what your final courses-played list turns out to be.

Coming from the guy on the biggest road trip ever..

-I'd skip Dry Creek Parkway..long, hilly, boring and lots of homeless/drug addicts roaming around when I was there. BTW back 10? is across the street, and #9 is way down past #8's basket.

- If you can go another 20 miles south of Des Moines, Pickard in Indianola is one of the BEST courses on Earth. Long and sorta tough though.

-Madeline Bertrand is a must play and surprisingly many people from other parts of MI haven't even heard of it.

-There are some decent easy courses around Wichita, KS

-Expo in Denver is short, open and easy but can be fun in high wind.

Enjoy, be safe, be prepared!

Blog on www.discgolfersr.us and 100's will read about it, possibly help you out, show you around on the way.

I'm not sure Ft. Robinson even exists. I called them and they said they didn't know anything about it. I also think I remember reading once the same thing on a Nebraska Disc website. I thought I heard (I could be way off too) that The ft. Robinson course is now in Chadron State park and that when Ft. Robinson was around it was at best a 1 and 1/2 star (The same goes for Chadron and Chadron SP) You might want to consider the unlisted Scottsbluff course (band new 9 hole 2&1/2-3 stars) or Torrington WY. Also I don't have to commute to Laramie on 9/4 if you PM me for my number I would be happy to guide you through Dry Creek, you could easily bag one of the other Cheyenne courses too Mylar is really quick about 35min to play.

Kiwanis Park - Galesburg, IL

First off, I have not played this course, but I lived there half of my life. I can tell you right now, if they did put a disc golf course in Kiwanis Park, it won't be worth the stop, unless you just don't care how simple it is. That park is like an open field. It isn't even that big. It has to be an ace run type course with no obstacles. Anyway, don't expect scenery, cool holes, or a challenge of any kind. Although, I think it is really cool Galesburg finally got a course period.

I hope you have a great trip bro! "Envious as Hell!"

I would agree with that so long as it isn't a weekend or a holiday. Otherwise that place is swarming with people. Since you have it on a Monday you should be good.

You could substitute one or two of the IL courses on 9/8 and play Rum Village in South Bend, IN which is only 10 miles or so from Madeline Bertrand and add another state. Same goes for George Wilson in Mishawaka, IN.

That itinerary looks brutal.

I would avoid any courses on the illnois side of the quad cities as they are being repaired after a 90mph sheer wind came through here about a month ago and tore apart some of our courses. I would suggest Camden 2 but it is unplayable but is a very nice course(or will be by spring of next year with all the damage) Have fun. I don't believe my wife would allow this kind of trip so i am truly jealous.

I'm going through here taking a look at the comments.

The description/reviews don't sound great, but it seems to be the only course worth playing in the area. The two courses in Laramie look flat out terrible. It looks like I might need to recalculate my plans for Thursday anyway especially if Fort Robinson doesn't exist. I'll have to put somemore thought into it this weekend.

I'm going to remove Ghost Town and replace it with Johnny Roberts. As unique and fun as Ghost Town sounds it would probably be best to come back another time when I can afford to take my time... maybe I'll fly out to Denver next summer for a long weekend and check it out with my wife.

Oh, and The Wright Life is a disc store that's next to Edora, so I'll only be playing three courses that day.

1) On 9/2, I'd substitute Expo Park in Aurora for Lorenz Park. Sounds good to me. I'll replace Lorenz with Expo.

In other news, one of the folks that I work with lives in Cedar Rapids and used to play disc golf so he wants me to come play there. So that means I need to pick a course in Cedar Rapids and re-configure the last couple of days of my trip. I'll definitely drop Kiwanis and see if I can work in Pickard somehow. Thanks to Donovan and Innovadude.

I've got to get back to work now but I'll work on this somemore on Saturday. Please continue with the comments, they are a huge help.

I've changed my itinerary around trying to accommodate as many of your recommendations as possible. I also removed a couple of courses along the way so that I could hit a few tourist traps. 30 is a round number, but who knows if I'll ever make it into South Dakota again? Might as well enjoy the sights.

You suck. Your trip sucks. I hope your arm falls off.

Okay...Didn't really mean that but it made me laugh. If you can hook up with a local to either play with or follow at Rum Village be sure to do so. The signs are pretty heavily vandalized unfortunately and some tees are tough to find. Be sure to follow my notes on my course review when you get there.

That looks like a lot of fun.

Pickard will be great choice.
Be prepared..I have all the time in the world on my trip, but it sounds like you have to keep on track. Get maps from online and take them with you, even if it says it has signs. That can save you hours. Check course websites for times/whether they are open or not/etc. Have backup course in mind for every course just in case..about 1/30 courses are impossible to find/navigate or are closed for one reason or another at any given time. Enjoy

Yeah, most days are going to be really tight. I've got things planned out in 30 minute increments which obviously doesn't leave a lot of time for unexpected delays. I'm definitely going to be printing off maps and reading local DG boards in advance in order to keep variables to a minimum.

I just did the math on this... it'll come out to right around 4,330 miles. 1,290 of that will be a marathon sprint from Michigan to Kansas. Man, I can't wait... just another week away.

While looking over my route I just realized that I can easily fit Water Works in KC into my schedule since I'll literally be driving right by it. So I'll drive all night then get out of my car at 8am on Friday and play one of the most legendary courses in the Midwest. I'll make sure to have my camera batteries charged so I can get some pictures uploaded for the website.

It's hard to concentrate on work when I know I'll be out on the road in a couple of days. :)

I recently made a shorter trip with my brother -- six days, 700 miles, a dozen courses, and 350 holes of disc golf... I started by plotting the few non-negotiables on the trip (in this case, Warwick and visiting a friend in NYC), and then made a list of "top courses" in NY/NJ/DE/PA/VA/MD, etc... I culled the list of top courses from various "top courses" lists from touring pros, disc golf message boards, etc... and the cross-referenced those with the courses that with the DGCR course descriptions to pick what I thought I would most enjoy. I then used the DGCR course map to just kind of click around and look for an optimal route... then got suggestions from locals and edited the route based on their suggestions and based on where good camping was located for each night.

It took quite a bit of doing to get the details together, but we got to play some amazing, amazing courses... it proved totally essential to have printed off course maps for every course in advance -- otherwise, we would have never played half as many holes, because we would have spent so much time trying to find our way through the courses. DG course layouts are not great, and maps (while not always up to date) at least give you a place to start.

I wish you well in your trip. Some other advice: plan one or two signature courses to play more than once. What I've learned is that there are few things more frustrating than playing an amazing course -- figuring a lot of things out your first time through -- and then having to drive away, not knowing if you'll ever get the chance to go back and improve upon your initial mistakes.

There is a tremendous emotional benefit to having the chance to replay and "beat" a great course. So to keep the emotional high of the trip, pick a top-tier course every few days on your route and plan to play it twice. It may mean you have to skip some lesser course, but the perk of playing better -- of "winning" against yourself -- is totally worth it.

Having just done 184 holes on nine courses in three days in Denver I totally agree. This is just another reason that DGCR rocks, to have all that information available in one place. If I was on a schedule I would probably intentionally skip courses for which I didn't have a map.

Another very good point. In my short DG career I've played a good number of courses only once and just know I could do better the second time around. In Denver I got the chance to play Westminster (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=869) twice. Under pretty much identical conditions my first round on Friday was a 61, and my second time through on Saturday I shot a 54. Felt sooo much better on Saturday. :)

Tim you still got that list? I was thinking about doing a road trip up to NY from south Jersey

I'm not sure where I put my list of "top courses" in the area -- but most of the ones that made the list are on the roadtrip schedule...

The great courses I had to skip to make this possible were the courses out near pittsburgh (Moraine, Deer Lakes, etc...), as well as Whispering Falls in southeast PA, and Seneca in MD... but since my brother had already played those courses, it wasn't a big deal to miss them.

Here's the original trip itinerary -- it changed slightly on the fly, based on what we could get done. If you want a lot more details, I kept got a lot of feedback and posted trip details on the discgolfreview forums (http://www.discgolfreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8119), as well as posting an overview and quick comparison of all the courses on the trip.

For a rough map of the proposed roadtrip loop, go here: www.tinyurl.com/discglory

Day one (Wednesday, Aug. 13) -- 99 holes today, or however long daylight lasts
Leave D.C. in early a.m.
Drive 100 miles to play Codorus (Hanover, PA -- 54 holes + 9 holes of mini disc golf)
Drive 27 miles to play at Pinchot State Park (Lewisberry, PA -- 36 holes), play until dark.
Camp at Pinchot State Park.

Day two (Thursday, Aug. 14) -- ~78 holes today
Get up and drive ~90 miles to play at Jordan Creek (White Hall, PA -- 18 holes)
Drive a few miles to play at Little Lehigh Parkway (Allentown, PA -- 18 holes)
Drive 15 miles to play at Nockamixon in PA (Quakertown, PA -- 14 holes, play three times or more, until dark)
Drive 20 miles to Tinicum Park and camp there.

Day three (Friday, Aug. 15) -- 72 holes today
Wake up play Tinicum Park (Erwinna, PA -- 18 holes)
Drive 90 miles to Warwick state park in NY and play three rounds from different tees (54 holes)

Tim you still got that list? I was thinking about doing a road trip up to NY from south Jersey

I can't stress highly enough how good the disc golf is in and around Allentown, PA. If I were trying to plan a quick trip, guaranteed to be impressive/fun/exhilarating, I'd just spend a long weekend in Allentown and play disc golf sunup to sundown.

Second! Allentown has some really, really good courses. Jordan Creek is one of my favorites.

hey Tim dont even tell me you played nockamixon more than once dude, that place is trecherous..haha...not to mention tyler and iron hill. I could see playing tyler twice that place is great, long but great. Iron hill pisses me off on some of the later holes, its just too thick for no reason. I was gonna play that one twice one day and by the end i was more aggrevated than tired.

I was hoping you'd have more info on NY, I play PA and DE parks every weekend and was looking to take it up north more but theres only 1 or 2 that look promising in NY

Greg,

Oddly enough I will be in Sturgis SD on the 4th of Sept too. I will keep your picture in mind in case I see you at Mt Rushmore. It looks like our plans just might work out that way. I hope your trip is going well.

Thanks Donovan. I'm planning on making it there around 4:30 or 5pm. I'll be wearing a Cubs hat if that helps.

I've made it to Water Works and Herman Hill so far. I'll be playing in Glenwood in Parsons tomorrow before really getting into the meat of my trip on Monday. I'm currently out in the sticks without internet access so I won't really be able to blog much until Monday night.

Well my bald head is hard to miss. I will try and have on Disc Golf Center T-shirt on. Ash gray with the big red Phoenix on the back. I would have loved to meet you at Spearfish, but I have feeling my family does intend to spend time with me on this trip. ;) We'll see how it all works out, but don't schedule anything around this; you have enough to worry about. I will be reading your blogs as often as I can!

Little Lehigh is sweet..but GET...A...MAP! or you won't be able to play it. (as of 3.5 months ago at least. Crazy long blind walks, I spent 2 hours searching and 1 hour playing. Hit F.E Walter Dam too.

Campgaw can't be missed, and Rochester/Buffalo have a sweet amount of good courses to pick from.

It's Wednesday evening and I've managed to play 13 courses, so this is roughly the halfway mark. My body is aching in ways that I wouldn't have dreamed possible. And the roughest part of my trip is yet to come... I have back to back 560 mile days starting tomorrow. One pleasant surprise has been the weather... after about roasting in Kansas all weekend I've had nothing but 60s and low 70s in the last couple of days and it looks like that trend is going to keep up.

Regarding tomorrow, I think I've decided to eliminate Casper DGC from my schedule. The current plan is to leave at 5:30am tomorrow and arrive in Rapid City, SD at 8pm. If I cut out Casper I can pull into Rapid City a couple of hours earlier. Playing four courses today really took it out of me, maybe only playing two tomorrow will recharge my batteries.

Regarding reviews and pictures, I'm slowly working on them. I've taken copious notes for almost all the courses I've played and plan on reviewing most of them. I've also taken pictures for most of the courses that didn't have any and will post them next week when I get home.

I'd like to say thank you to the folks that have guided me through courses so far. Chris at Carey Park, Miles Jamie and Jebidiah the dog at Johnny Roberts, two guys from Wisconsin whose names I can't remember at Edora, and DGCR's DGTourist at Dry Creek Parkway. You all made my experiences at those courses more memorable.

15 courses to go!

Dude you are an animal, when I first saw your schedule I tohught, 'there's no way gets through all that.' Rapid City's Jackson Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=325) is nice, I think you'll like it. It was cool to have a fourmite encounter, you'll have to tour me when I get to Michigan.
