View Full Version : Crazy/Alternative Tournament Ideas

In the spirit of altrantive touranments like the Ace Race and Ice Bowl I wanted to see what other ideas or events people have held for tournaments.
For instance our local club has a tournament where players play the course backward and each hole has a gimmick. Sometimes players throw different discs or objects and sometimes they have ridiculous OB, mandos or rules.
I have seen other clubs hold a one or two disc challenge tournament. So throw out some fun ideas for an alternative tournament. These are good ways to get people out to raise funds and have fun in my opinion.

That's an awesome idea with the 2 disc challenge.
You could do one with a RIPT challenge. That would get a little sketch though...

I forget what they called it, but I remember seeing signs for a tourney at Wickham in CT where each person on a team of three had to throw with different styles.(FH, BH, thumber, etc...) I'm not sure what you did on holes that required 3+ shots, but it sounded cool.

Switch bags with the competition. On a not-so hazardous course trade bags with people and try to play a round without your discs, and with someone elses.
a course without water to lose others' discs in.

Must be RODNOC...

"The Heckler" loses something without the audio... for that try these clips:

We have an unsanctioned local tournament here where the first round is singles by typical divisions. The second round is best shot doubles with the teams composed of high/low score across all divisions. That means the best overall score is paired with the worst overall score for the second round, usually a Pro player with a novice. Second best score is paired with the second worst score, and so on. Your individual score for your ranking in the division is your singles score plus your doubles score. Payout is per division just like a regular singles event.
Tomorrow out local organization is going to try a new format called "Tombstone" where each division is allocated a specific number of strokes and you see how far into the course you can go. Winner is whoever makes it the furthest. E.g. Each MA1 player gets 50 strokes, each MA2 player gets 54 strokes, MA3 gets 59, and MA4 gets 65. You can't shotgun start within a division or it wouldn't be fair, each division should start on the same hole so they play the same layout. When you reach your stroke limit you plant a flag with your name on it.

Yeah it is RODNOC. Ver very fun disc golf tournament. I like that Tombstone idea. I may have to steal it for an event our club can do.

3 disk, worst shot:
Basically you throw 3 discs from every tee and your group chooses the worst of the three for you to play your next shot from. You then throw 3 from this spot, group chooses the worst, and so on... It is tougher than it sounds because you have to hit all 3 putts at some point in order to finish the hole and usually don't have 3 of the disc you'd like to throw in any given situation. Probably better for practice than a tourny, as it really helps with consistency, but tends to take a long time.

there is a "punt, pass, and kick" event at the grange every new years day. players use footballs, must "tee off" from a tee and complete the hole by throwing or punting the ball until you hole out in the basket.

we also used to play a "croquet" variant where if you landed on the other player's disc you could throw it in whatever direction you wanted.

Holy crap... I can imagine so... just finding three discs you threw on some courses could take all day... plus the addition of deciding the worst shot for everyone else on the card too. Wow..

Not that's funny. Sometimes it's good to be BOB. ;)

"Drive" must be a placekick (from a tee). Punt, pass, or teed-up placekick at player's discretion after that. If I can get my lazy a$$ out there this January, I will win this event.

Damn, that's cold. You really want to be the anti-CTP around the green & put 1st in that format.

Those things are cool, but it seems to me like it wouldn't work (as well) with something like a rotating disc

I've played those before.
Its quite simple, just spin it with the ball at the end and throw it up in the air to your catching partner.
The catching partner needs to catch the RED part of the tail before the ball hits the ground in order to get points like 5 points, YELLOW part is 3 points, BLUE is for one points or whatever points you can come up with.
Its a game of hands/eyes coordination, that's all.

We just had a disc skills challenge. It was a lot of fun. 1 regular round, break for lunch, then special 6-hole freestyle disc round (superclass), throwing through a hula hoop 8 feet high at 3 different distances, "get out of trouble" bulleye (blind shot with giant bullseye), 6 rounds of putting baseball, distance (bh, fh, roller, overhand), distance w/ accuracy (same shots), and finally maximum time aloft (throw freestyle disc into the wind and then catch it.

Every mid-April (for the last 33 years), Pratt Park in Fredericksburg, VA hosts the Virginia State Flying Disc Tournament, which rolls distance, accuracy, disc golf, MTA, DDC, & freestyle into one tournament to crown each year's Virginia state all-around champ. It is a BLAST!!

I have played a round with a golf disc, a mini marker, and a lid. You alternate throws with each one, always keeping the same order. You could be driving with a lid while someone else is driving with a mini, it all depends on how many throws each of you have already thrown. Oh, and if you screwed up and threw one out of order it was a penalty stroke.

I love that idea, I'm going to bring that one up with my friends, but not everyone has a mini, so we might just say putter mid and driver, but either way I like the idea.

How do you count a putt "good" with a mini marker? They almost never stay in the basket/chains.

A guy here in delaware has 18 portable baskets and sets up temp courses. One i played last year was on a playground/athletic field. Baskets on top of jungle gyms and stuff like that. One memorable hole the basket was inside a soccer goal and you teed off from behind the goal. the real trick was that what is in bounds for the soccer field was OB for the hole. to avoid a penalty you had to hook the disc around and inside the goal. good times

It counts if it falls through bottom, but it has to go over the basket first, it doesn't count if it goes through the side first then out the bottom.

There's an anual tournament in Memphis area called "Roc run", you use one disc, a roc and each hole has crazy obstacles, here are some from this year...
one hole was about 250' with 6 baskets pretty close together, can you say ace run?
one hole's basket the chains were bungie corded together.
one hole's basket sit in a kiddie pool, if you missed your putt you were going OB :)
one basket was suspsended in the air about 14'.
one basket was placed inside a tent with only one opening.
It was a VERY fun tournament.

Here's a somewhat simple idea that I would like to try sometime:
Give each tourney card a bag, bowl or some opaque container with some poker chips in it. Each color chip gives the player the ability to perform a special action during the round. For example:
White chip - Mulligan (can be used any time)
Blue chip - "Piggyback" - Like your opponent's lie better than yours? Take your next shot from his instead!.
Red chip - "Hex" - hate that awesome drive your opponent just parked? Negate it, and make him re-throw! (A player can only be hexed once per hole. Aces are immune to hexes).
And if you have additional colors, you can add other special actions: "Switch lies" "Doubles partners for a hole (pick your partner)" "Two tee shots, pick your favorite", and so on.
At the beginning of the round, everyone draws a chip from the bag. After each hole, a player gets a chip if they at least tied for the best score on the hole, the exception being when everyone on the card scored the same in which case nobody draws. Once a chip is in your possession, you can use it at any time. Once a chip is used, it is returned to the bag. A player may not hold more than five chips at any one time and cannot draw for a sixth chip even if he is eligible to.
At the end of the round, there will be a CTP (all cards combined) for a prize (and the ace pot if nobody hit one). Everybody gets one throw. For each unused chip they still are holding, of any color, they get an additional throw.

I had an idea for an alternative tournament.
Roll of the dice.
Every group gets a reference card and a dice. Your initial drive is dictated by the roll of the dice. Your choices could be:
1. Back Hand
2. Fore Hand
3. Tomahawk
4. Thumber
5. Roller
6. Cards Choice
I think this could make for an interesting tourney, and also give you a chance to practice alot of different shots. The real one that would screw you would be #6 (cards choice) you know they are going to choose the most inappropriate shot for the situation. I think it would be fun.

I'm running a 666 doubles tournament for Halloween, 2 rounds of different 666 formats.
Rd. 1: 6 holes tough shot, 6 alternate, 6 best disc
Rd. 2: 6 holes of putter only, 6 holes of island shots, 6 holes of "tees of evil".

We ran a Worlds Toughest Doubles event a while back. It was on a 9-hole course and included 9 holes of pure Worst Shot, 9 of Tough Shot, 9 of regular Alternating ("easiest" of the four formats) and 9 of Worst Alternating Score. Worst Alternating Score is where each partner drives and then plays from their partner's lie. Partners keep switching back and forth from each other's lies until holing out. Whichever of the two score sequences is worst, is the team score on that hole.

I can't believe no one has mentioned a glow tourney yet. Lots of fun. I've done the one disc thing too, lots of fun especially if everyone has to use the same disc (our tourney used R Pro darts). I've had artificial islands added to holes with surveying tape (miss the island and it costs you a stroke) and new mandos. One local course has a summer tourney series where every week it is a different tee and a different pin (6 total combos).
You have to be a little careful though. If it gets too gimmicky it starts to feel like miniature bolf.

That's a great idea. One day round, one night with a nice eat in between. Something like that would really bring the disc golf community even closer together. A buddy of mine always has full moon tourneys. It's a mini every full moon. Once in a blue moon, we'll have two of these in one month.
Another idea the local pro had was playing a tournament in one large group. A whole mob of people going from hole to hole. The catch is: the mob can heckle you as much as they want while you throw, as long as there's no touching, no obstructing the disc in flight, and no/limited nudity if ladies or law enforcement officials are present.
