In early April Ashleigh and I will be in Enid OK, and it looks like we'll have several days to shoot down to Dallas then make our way back to Chicago. Is there anything worth going out of the way for in the OKC area? We'll likely spend 2-3 days in the DFW area, all the 4+ rated courses are already on my list. What are some hidden gems or courses that may not be polished but have fun and interesting holes? I'm also interested in camping and food suggestions. We'll be hitting Selah on our way back, no need to tell me how much of a must play that one is. :)

The reviews probably say it all for DG and there's the DFW thread in the Courses forum. Check that out.

If yall travel Route 66 in OK, there are lots of museums with old cars, motorcycles, farm equipment and the like.

The Dallas aquarium is nice. Great aquatic exhibits and sort of a mini zoo too.

For food, the metroplex is a full plate. Papadeauxs, Cattlemens, Saltgrass, Texas Land and Cattle, Texas de Brazil. Or, if you'd like to have enough gas money to make it back home, any place that looks like a one off BBQ joint is good. Up In Smoke in Keller (go in the side by the bikes. I can't explain why, but it's better that way). Risckys in Ft Worth. Roanoke is restaurant city.

We also have Whataburger and Mooyas for fast food.

If you want Mexican, again, a one off looking place is worth a shot. Linas Cochina in Watauga comes to mind. On the fast food side of that, we have Del Taco and Fuzzys.

Play North Park in Haltom City. The new teepads and signage makes it a pretty cool little course if a homer can so so himself. ;-)

DFW is a long way away, you could find plenty of good courses in OK, the Lodge is supposed to be great. Are you coming just to play Selah?
You can find a mini every day of the week around DFW if you are into that type of thing.
Veterans and Z Boaz get busy, I'd go early.
Cherry Creek is too far out of the way to be worth the trip for someone just in town for a few days unless you make the trip to Tyler to play Lindsey park. The Gold at Lindsey is sick, red and blue are cool too.
Lake Park in Lewisville is the best course for any wet weather.
Towne Lake has Alex Clark very close by and AC is worth a play as you can get around it in just over an hour. They are terrible after a heavy rain though. Come by Alex Clark wed night for the mini. Doubles at TL on Friday and two minis on Sunday at 10 & 2
I haven't played it yet but, Try and get a round in at Crossroads when you head to Lester Lorch in Cedar Hill.

If you had two day in DFW to play and were going to get crazy and play 3 a day,

I'd hit Lewisville Lake on your way in. Bill Allen in the Colony, Towne Lake in McKinney and Alex Clark would be an easy one to finish the day with very close to Towne Lake. Or skip Bill Allen and hit Harry Myers after Towne Lake but that is a longish drive.

Next day, Turner park, then the two lester lorch corses, then crossroads. possibly skip turner and hit crossroads.

all good courses and non are too busy to get a round in on.

vet, z-baoz, north park would also be a good combo but again, z and v get busy.

If you are going to be here a few days, i would play...Of Course...Both of the Lester Lorch and CrossRoads in one day, then i would hit up Crowley(Bicentennial) , Gateway and Harry Myers.

These are probably the toughest courses in the metroplex. Lester Lorch isnt too hard, but they are both a must play!

If you are looking for a more enjoyable relaxing day of golf, i would play Alex Clark, and Bear Creek, Turner Park (Hard but not too hard). Then the next day i would try out, Veterans, North Park, and one of the Lester Lorch parks.

Not sure what you are looking for, or your skill level, but there are some beast's here in DFW. If you are a decent player i would go for the harder courses so you can see what this town truly has to offer, but if your just here to have a little fun, stay away from the harder courses, because they could really eat your lunch!

We're up for any level of challenge, tough courses are great and we don't mind some easier but fun courses. We typically play 4-5 rounds per day, so we'll be able to get quite a bit of golf in. Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep 'em coming!

The only must play courses near DFW are Selah and also the Lindsey Park Gold course (aka dogwood) in Tyler.

Don't get me wrong, DFW has some great courses, especially Houck designed Harry Myers. Just make sure you don't overlook the Tyler course. Selah and Dogwood are the real mind blowers in the area.

I drafted a plan for Enid to Dallas, 3 days in Dallas and a day at Selah, here's the road trip (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/roadtrips.php?mid=4475&tid=1455#maptop). Any suggestions or substitutions? We'll play the 5 courses listed in Oklahoma on the way down, then camp somewhere between there and Dallas. We'll play 4-5 courses per day and get through the rest of those pretty easily in 3 days, likely adding some lower rated courses if we have light left at the end of any of those days.

Our plan after Selah is a little up in the air, we might have to loop back through Enid. Either way, we might try to loop down and hit Tyler and Cherry Creek.

There's nothing super special about Arcadia (TX version). Lots of long and open. If you're going to mark one off the list, I would strike this one.

OR

Travel a little (10ish minutes down Hwy 377 from Arcadia) south and play North Park in Haltom City. A ton of work has been put into this course , and I think it's much more of a challenge with fun factor than Arcadia would be.

Thanks, I added North Park to the list, I missed BullyBull suggesting that in this thread already, I'm glad you mentioned it. I think we'll have time to do both, but it's good to know Arcadia is one to skip if we end up crunched for time.

There might be one more course worth going out of your way for, and that's the new course in Dennison TX designed by HB Clark. I hear it's pretty amazing, and it might be one of those courses you'll regret not playing while you were in the area. It's so new, though. All I have are second hand accounts that it is destined for greatness.

Z Boaz was a lot of fun and Bicentennial too, along with both Lester Lorch courses on the south side of town. Also Lake Lewisvillle on the North egde of the metro area. If you are driving you have to stop at Lake Murray Lodge in Oklahoma and play those cone style baskets that range from 50'-150' or so . . . its a fun quick acerun 9 holer. No aces for my or my wife though.

If you want to play a crappy 9 holer with my same namee . . . in Irving W.O. Harrington will fit the bill well.

And if you're coming down this way and make the two at Lorch (which is a must -- the most interesting 36-hole back-to-back I've seen), then I'm gonna make the pitch for Crossroads Church. I hope we're headed toward a 4-rating. A guy who got kicked off during church time one day came on here and gave it a 1.5, which is pulling the avg down until there are more reviews.

And yeah, I'm a little prejudiced b/c I help Sean keep the course up.

We'll be starting some minis there soon.

I tried to edit my road trip and it got all wonky. Here's (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/roadtrips.php?mid=4475&tid=1457) an updated version with suggestions taken into account.

Seriously Lake Murray isn't worth it unless you want the nostalgia of playing those cone buckets . . . or you specifically want to try for an ace. The holes are short and it is not a good course, but you are a course bagger too so I am sure you will have some fun . . . maybe.

It looks like a decent spot to camp on the way down, and the cone baskets are always a hoot.

I play NP every week. You'd think I'd be good at it by now, but... Anyway, it gets a little nicer each week. More signs, #5 has a tee pad now, more mulch in the muddy spots and grip tape on the bridges.

I went and played Munson Park in Denison this weekend, and I agree it is a nice course, and the design is excellent, but it lacks the majestic serenity of Selah's Lakeside. Nor does it seem to be "cut from nature to bring you the ultimate technical challenge" like Selah's Creekside or Tyler's Dogwood. It's a municipal park with the look and feel of a munical park. In fact, it seemed so similar to Turner Park in Grand Prairie that I thought the resemblance was eerie. So if you find that Turner is the best course you've ever played, and you'd drive 1.5 hours to play another course of similar look and feel but slightly less difficulty, then Munson Park may be for you.

Leaving bright and early Friday morning, hitting Crystal City Underground on the way out there, spending Monday through Wednesday in Dallas and playing Selah next Friday, I'm stoked!
